Presented by San Francisco Travel Association and 5 M in collaboration with local civic, arts and cultural partners, the 2022/2023 Illuminate SF festival runs from Nov 9 through the end of January and celebrates San Francisco’s vibrant art scene.

Inspired by the debut of Leo Villareal’s The Bay Lights, San Francisco Travel launched the festival in 2013 to brighten the longest nights of the year. Illuminate SF has grown since its inception from six to 62 temporary and permanent eco-friendly light art installations created by a diverse array of acclaimed international and local artists, including Olaf Eliasson, Jenny Holzer, Daniel Libeskind, Jorge Pardo and Jerry van Eyck, along with San Francisco Bay-based Jim Campbell, Johanna Grawunder, Dorka Keehn other Brian Goggins.

Illuminate SF light art installations can be experienced across the city from the Embarcadero to the Inner Sunset, North Beach to Bayview, and while flying in or out of san francisco International Airport (SFO). The works come to life at dusk, turning evenings into an illuminating adventure, especially when combined with exploring San Francisco’s world-class restaurants, nightlife, cultural events and holiday activations.

Spectacular New Additions to the Illuminate SF Festival of Light
The Wind-Baffles: The iconic wind baffle structures that anchor The Parks at 5 Ma new, vibrant community connected to the surrounding fabric of San Francisco’s SOMA District by a cohesive network of public spaces, are the brainchild of Jerry van Eyck, founder of !melk, an award-winning urban design and landscape architecture firm. Built to mitigate wind, the baffles or “wind breakers” are artfully illuminated from the outside and complemented with a soft glow that radiates through the perforations in the upper zones. Though made from steel, a material associated with heaviness and industry, the baffles are often referred to as “flowers” for their stem and leaf-like design elements. Come nightfall they transform into breathtaking sculptures and suddenly seem to float.

Helical Trace: A permanent installation inside the new LUMA Hotel in Mission Bay, Helical Trace is local artist Jim Campbell’s latest contribution to San Francisco’s Light Art Trail. The dynamic light installation can be seen from the street through the lobby’s floor-to-ceiling three-story windows. The prolific artist who installed Day for Night atop the Salesforce Tower created this striking installation that looks different from every angle and uses the reflection of the windows to amplify its movement. At a distance, the helix form gives the illusion of water across light. The figures within climb an infinite stretch of waterfall, allowing Campbell to create delight out of physical struggle.

Franchise Freedom: Immersive Arts Alliance will bring the acclaimed aerial light performance Franchise Freedom to san francisco for five nights beginning Jan 12. Created by internationally renowned Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta of DRIFT, Franchise Freedom is comprised of 600 illuminated drones that will fly from Treasure Island over the San Francisco Bay towards the Embarcadero, allowing visibility along the shorelines in san francisco, Sausalito, Emeryville other Berkeley. Based on a biological algorithm from over 10 years of research into starlings’ flight behavior, Franchise Freedom stretches boundaries between nature and technology and generates an impactful social connection.

Lucy in the Sky: One of two new light art installations joining the City’s extensive Civic Arts Collection, Erwin Redls Lucy in the Sky is a landmark artwork in the city’s new Central Subway (first opening for weekend service on Nov 19). Located in the Union Square/Market Street Station, the immersive installation is comprised of over 500 translucent 10 x 10-inch light panels, each containing an array of color LEDs. The panels are suspended along the entire length of the concourse level’s ceiling, spanning nearly 670 feet. Installed in a diamond-shaped pattern, the light panels are computer programmed to slowly change color and display simple patterns, creating a kaleidoscopic experience.

Untitled: Along the Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit (VN-BRT) Geary Street Station’s north and southbound boarding platforms, Jorge Pardos lighting sculpture brings a pop of whimsical light and color. Comprised of painted steel, fiberglass, acrylic and LED light fixtures, Untitled is playful and sophisticated with engaging use of color, form, movement, space and light.

Peace in the Middle East: Taravat Talepas and’s Peace in the Middle East returns as a permanent installation in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts’ Grand Lobby. Hung from the ceiling, this intricate neon artwork (featuring the word “peace” in Farsi “صلح”) explores the cultural taboos that reflect on gender and political authority through Talepasand’s lens as an Iranian-American woman.

Lantern Stories: san francisco: This public art installation of 29 illustrated lanterns by award-winning interdisciplinary artist Yu-Wen Wu illuminates San Francisco Chinatown’s history, culture and community. Creating a luminous canopy on the 600 block of Grant Avenue, the lanterns relate the long and fraught history and legacy of Chinese immigration in the US They feature images of Bruce Lee, Amy Tanjournalist Helen Ziapioneer restaurateur Cecilia Chang and others. Many highlight the arts, calligraphy, music and performance, as well as the community’s strong commitment to education, entrepreneurship and social justice.

GLOW: Discover the Art of Light: The Exploratorium is bringing back its popular – GLOW: Discover the Art of Light from Nov. 17 through Jan. 29, 2023, with six artists illuminating Pier 15 with light sculptures big and small. In gallery 3, Jen Lewin’s The Last Ocean is an expansive landscape of interactive platforms that illuminate to resemble a glowing ice field. Created from reclaimed ocean plastic, the platform’s five-sided pieces form a beautiful geometric tessellation — a repeating pattern of flat shapes with no gaps.

In the Black Box, Anila Quayyam Agha’s All the Flowers are For Me is inspired by Islamic textiles, architecture, and floral motifs. A single beacon of light glows from within a suspended steel cube, producing immersive patterns that ripple and change as visitors move through the space. Similarly, Agha’s Teardrop (after Robert Irvin) interweaves delicate, traditional Islamic decorative geometric patterns and architecture with modern materials. Entangled Attraction and Raylights, a pair of installations by Resonance Studio artists Sally Weber other Craig Newswanger, immerse visitors in trails of light in motion. Entangled Attraction features 100 pinpoints of light that appear to orbit around each other when viewed from afar, while Raylights produces ever-changing, mandala-like light patterns synchronized to ambient sounds.

Let’s Glow SF: Downtown San Francisco will again boast the largest holiday projecting mapping event in the US with the return of Let’s Glow SF. Running Dec 2 to 11the nightly journey of light and color will feature stunning whimsical, abstract, and naturalistic winter-themed works by local and international artists projected onto four iconic buildings.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the city’s 10th cultural district on Tuesday, a move that will recognize Pacific Islanders in Visitacion Valley and provide resources to support the dwindling community’s growth.

“People will be able to go somewhere they belong, somewhere people understand them, somewhere where they have all the same access to resources as every other community,” said Gaynor Siataga, the director of San Francisco’s Pacific Islander Community Hub and a leading advocate for the cultural district. “This will give them a sense of identity and belonging here in this wonderful city.”

Pacific Islanders’ roots in San Francisco date back to when it was still a settlement. But the community has steadily decreased in size — from more than 8,600 residents in 1990 to about 2,150 last year, or roughly 0.4% of the city’s population. Strong socioeconomic challenges, including high levels of poverty, unemployment and chronic health conditions, contributed to the community’s decline and intensified during the pandemic.

Around the same time that several Pacific Islander community-based organizations teamed up to respond to the population’s high rates of COVID-19 illness and death, planning for the cultural district started in earnest.

Tuesday’s 11-0 vote was seen as a culmination of those years-long efforts, but not an end point to them.

“We have folks who really want to come back to the city,” said Tino Felise, the neighborhood program coordinator at the Samoan Community Development Center and one of those behind the effort to create the cultural district. “Hopefully, establishing this cultural district will help us re-establish our population, and make sure this is a place Pacific Islanders can continue to call home.”

In coming months, the office of Supervisor Shamann Walton, who represents the area where the new district will be established, will work with Pacific Islander community leaders to cement the exact geographic boundaries of the district and solidify plans to protect and support the Pacific Islander community . This begins with the creation of a three-year strategic plan, according to the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, and the hiring of a cultural district staff.

Once finalized, the area will be awarded the annual funding provided to each district: $230,000 of hotel tax funds to plan for the services, resources and programs, all of which will be designed by a new cultural district advisory board and the city.

“I think the cultural district will really begin to allow everyone to see the specific needs of the Pacific Islander community, and focus on strengthening the solutions to supporting them,” Walton said.

Julia Sabory, who manages community planning and cultural districts at the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, said cultural districts can elevate a community’s voice at the policymaking table while promoting programs that are created with and for the populations they serve.

“It’s not so much about the numbers and the masses of residents,” Sabory said. “It’s about addressing the systemic exclusion of groups, and trying to include them into processes and opportunities to improve that community’s quality of life.”

“Getting the cultural district approved is just the beginning,” said Siataga. “The work — the deep-rooted work — starts after.”

Wissenschaft seit dem Erdbeben

Das verstärkte Schütteln wurde ursprünglich beim Mineral-Erdbeben durch detaillierte Analysen von USGS „Did You Feel It?“ dokumentiert. berichtet. Das USGS und seine Partner installierten nach dem Erdbeben temporäre Seismometer in der Stadt, um die Variation der Erschütterungsstärke und ihre Beziehung zu den Sedimenten unter der Stadt besser zu verstehen. Sedimente sind schwächer als das darunter liegende Grundgestein und bewegen sich daher mehr, während sie auch mehr Energie einschließen.

Eine Verstärkung durch Sedimente wurde bei Erdbeben in anderen Gebieten beobachtet, zum Beispiel bei der Konzentration von Schäden im Marina District von San Francisco während des Erdbebens von Loma Prieta 1989, aber die Stärke dieses Effekts war für die Sedimente entlang des Ostens nicht so gut bekannt Küste. Richtung des Schüttelns

Informierende Entscheidungen

Die Kenntnis der durch diese Sedimente verursachten Verstärkung und der Richtung der Erschütterung wird Notfallmanagern helfen, Gemeinschaften zu identifizieren, die möglicherweise anfälliger für Erschütterungen sind. Dieses Wissen wird dem USGS helfen, seine seismischen Gefahrenkarten zu verfeinern, die die Stärke der Bodenerschütterungen schätzen, die bei Erdbeben in jedem Gebiet des Landes zu erwarten sind.

Diese Erkenntnisse können auch von Notfallmanagern bei der Planung und Reaktion auf Katastrophen genutzt werden; staatliche und lokale Regierungen bei der Verfeinerung von Bauvorschriften; und Architekten und Ingenieure bei der Planung und Renovierung von Gebäuden, um die Auswirkungen zukünftiger Erdbeben zu mildern. Darüber hinaus hilft die Wissenschaft bei der Planung großer Infrastrukturinvestitionen wie Dämme und Stauseen.

Erdbeben im Osten verstehen

Das Erdbeben ereignete sich in der von Wissenschaftlern als Central Virginia Seismic Zone bezeichneten Zone mit einer langen Geschichte gelegentlicher Erdbeben. Die Ermittlung der Orte und Magnituden vergangener Erdbeben und der Wahrscheinlichkeit zukünftiger Erdbeben in der Region ist ein Bereich aktiver Forschung.

Das USGS und seine Partner setzten unmittelbar nach dem Mineral-Erdbeben tragbare Seismographen ein, um vorhandene Seismometer in der Region zur Aufzeichnung von Nachbeben zu ergänzen. Mehr als 450 Nachbeben, darunter sechs über Magnitude 3, wurden im Jahr nach dem Erdbeben identifiziert, und bei nachfolgenden Analysen wurden bisher fast 4.000 erkannt. Dieses Wissen trägt dazu bei, Verwerfungslinien und Erdbebenquellen besser zu verstehen und Schätzungen über die Anzahl der zu erwartenden Nachbeben zu verfeinern.

Innerhalb von Minuten nach dem Erdbeben meldete die USGS “Did You Feel It?” Die Website registrierte fast 150.000 Antworten, die von Florida bis zu einem Großteil des Südostens Kanadas und im Westen bis zum Mississippi River Valley reichten. Die Orte und die Stärke von Bodenerschütterungen wurden auch an etablierten seismischen Stationen in den USA gemessen. Diese Daten geben Auskunft über die Entfernungen, in denen Bodenerschütterungen durch Erdbeben in dieser seismischen Zone auftreten können.

Erdbeben an der Ost- und Westküste

Das Mineral-Erdbeben hat gezeigt, wie weit sich die Bodenerschütterung im Osten der USA ausdehnen kann als im Westen der USA sie effizienter zu überqueren, wenn ein Erdbeben auftritt. Ein weiterer Faktor, der das potenzielle Risiko im Osten der USA erhöht, besteht darin, dass viele ältere Bauwerke wie Gebäude und Brücken, die vor den 1970er Jahren gebaut wurden, nicht für starke Erschütterungen durch Erdbeben ausgelegt waren.

Auswirkungen und Schäden durch das Erdbeben in Virginia

Die Schäden durch das Erdbeben waren groß. In Louisa County, Virginia, in der Nähe des Epizentrums des Erdbebens, wurden zahlreiche Häuser und Gebäude beschädigt, wobei zwei Schulen so schwer beschädigt wurden, dass sie ersetzt werden mussten. Häuser und andere Gebäude wurden bis nach Washington, etwa 130 Kilometer vom Epizentrum entfernt, beschädigt. Mehrere bekannte historische Gebäude wurden schwer beschädigt, insbesondere die Washington National Cathedral, das Washington Monument und das Smithsonian Institution Building, bekannt als Castle.

Nach dem Erdbeben wurden viele Gebäude im gesamten Mittelatlantikgebiet vorübergehend evakuiert. Das Atomkraftwerk North Anna, das sich etwa 19 Kilometer vom Hauptschock-Epizentrum entfernt befindet, wurde infolge der starken Erschütterungen des Erdbebens abgeschaltet. Vorausschauen

Der Osten der USA ist nicht immun gegen schädliche Erdbeben. Diese Gefahr ist seit der Kolonialzeit bekannt, als 1755 vor Cape Ann, Massachusetts, und 1774 in der Nähe von Petersburg, Virginia, verheerende Erdbeben auftraten.
