South San Francisco Police Chief Scott Campbell has promoted Sgt. Fahmida Murphy to police lieutenant, the first female to hold the position in agency history.

Murphy was born and raised in South San Francisco. She attended Buri Buri Elementary, Alta Loma Middle School and graduated from El Camino High School. Fahmida started her career with the South San Francisco Police Department in 2001 at the age of 19 as a records specialist in the front office.

Shortly thereafter, she was hired as a police recruit and joined the Police Academy, becoming a full-time officer in 2003. Fahmida worked a variety of assignments throughout her career, including patrol officer, downtown bicycle officer, field training officer, school liaison corporal , crisis negotiator and sergeant. As a sergeant, Fahmida oversaw patrol teams, the crisis negotiation team and the traffic unit.

“Sgt. Fahmida Murphy is the perfect addition to our lieutenant team. She has been with the police department since 2001 and is a true representative of our South City culture, and I couldn’t be happier to promote her to the rank of lieutenant,” Police Chief Scott Campbell said in a press release.

As a lieutenant, Fahmida is currently assigned as the Patrol Watch Commander. Fahmida holds a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice for the University of Arizona and intends to obtain her master’s degree in emergency management. She is also a graduate of several leadership programs

“I’m honored and humbled to be chosen as a lieutenant among a highly-qualified group of sergeants within our South San Francisco Police Department,” Murphy said in a press release. “South City is my home, and I’m proud to be able to serve the residents of this city to continue to ensure that it remains a safe city for all of our residents and visitors.”

SANTA CLARA (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have helped dictate the first round of the draft in five years under general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan with top 10 picks four times and multiple first-rounders twice.

That’s what will make this year’s opening night of the draft so unusual for the Niners, who won’t have an opening-round pick for the first time since 1996 after trading it last March to move up to take Trey Lance third overall to be their quarterback of the future.

READ MORE: Homeschooling In California Sees Boom; Looming Kids’ COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate May Be Driving Increase

San Francisco’s first pick next week will be 61st overall in the second round, barring a trade.

“Everyone talks, ‘We don’t have a first-round pick,’ and we’re not used to that,” general manager John Lynch said earlier this offseason. “But I think when people ask me what’s the signature of this draft, it’s the depth of it. So it’s a good year to have it. I like that we have nine picks. I think it’s a good year to exhibit patience … It sets up well for where we’re at.”

The verdict on the decision to trade three first-round picks for Lance hasn’t been rendered yet as he started only two games as a rookie when San Francisco went to the NFC title game with Jimmy Garoppolo as the starting quarterback.

Garoppolo is still around: San Francisco was unable to trade him this offseason after he underwent shoulder surgery. Garoppolo is expected to be with the Niners for the start of the offseason program but he still could be traded either at the draft or later in the offseason as Shanahan remains committed to Lance as the future starter.

“We brought Trey here to be that eventually, and I think that will be sooner than later,” Shanahan said.

DEEBO’S FUTURE

All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel told ESPN he has requested a trade, which could alter the draft plans for San Francisco. The Niners could give into the demand and deal Samuel for a pick that could get them a replacement in the first round. If they don’t make a deal, the 49ers could look to add a receiver later in the draft for depth in case they end up moving on from Samuel later this offseason or when his contract is up at the end of the season.

BIGGEST NEED

San Francisco was fairly quiet in free agency, with the most significant move the signing of former Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward. Most of the other moves focused on adding depth to the defensive line and upgrading special teams.

READ MORE: UPDATE: Teen Girl Severely Hurt in 2011 San Jose Hit-and-Run Crash Dies Of Her Injuries

That leaves the biggest need heading into the draft at guard, where starter Laken Tomlinson left in free agency, leaving 2021 second-rounder Aaron Banks and Daniel Brunskill as the leading contenders to start. But Banks was unable to get on the field much as a rookie, and Brunskill was overmatched at times and could be better suited to a reserve role in which he could play both tackle and guard.

OTHER NEEDS

The Niners also could use help at safety with long-time starter Jaquiski Tartt still unsigned as a free agent, along with center and right tackle.

The Niners are unsure 36-year-old center Alex Mack will return for another season, but no matter what he decides the team still could look for a long-term option there. Mike McGlinchey, the No. 9 overall pick in 2018, is playing out his fifth-year option at right tackle and coming off a season-ending quadriceps injury. So adding depth there could be an option.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Despite the missing picks from the Lance trade, the 49ers are expected to be busy on the second and third days of the draft. San Francisco got five compensatory picks for losing free agents, along with special picks for losing Robert Saleh to coach the Jets and Martin Mayhew to take over as GM in Washington.

One of those picks went to Miami in the Lance deal, but San Francisco will still have a second-round pick, two thirds, one fourth, one fifth, three sixths and one seventh.

LONG WAIT

This would be the first time since 1996 that the Niners won’t make a pick in the first round after using that pick the previous year to trade up for receiver JJ Stokes. San Francisco’s first pick that draft didn’t make much of an impact with second-round defensive end Israel Ifeanyi playing just three career games. But the 49ers did come away with a star that year, taking Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens in the third round.

The NFL is nearing its first female head coach. It might be a few more years…

The NFL is nearing its first female head coach.

It may be a few more years, maybe another decade. However, the question is no longer if it will happen, but when it will happen.

“We’ve basically asked everyone that, including all the head coaches, and I think the general consensus is that it’s going to happen,” Jane Skinner Goodell said on the AP Pro Football Podcast. “I think the main thing that everyone seemed to stress was that it has to happen organically and fit well, right? It will happen. This job posting will have the right candidate, who happens to be a woman, and hopefully it works out. … I think it’s probably in the near future. I would never guess when, but everyone, including women, wants it to happen the right way, so it’s the right person at the right time.”

Skinner Goodell, a former television reporter married to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, is Executive Producer of a new five-part documentary series from NFL Films entitled Earnin’ It. The series sheds light on the careers of some of the most powerful women working in the league. The first episode airs Sunday on Peacock.

Last year, Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant defense coach Lori Locust and assistant strength and conditioning coach Maral Javadifar became the first team coaches to win the Super Bowl. Sarah Thomas also made history as the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl and serve as a down judge.

In 2020, Katie Sowers became the first woman to coach a Super Bowl. She was an offensive assistant for the San Francisco 49ers in their loss to Kansas City.

“Earnin’ It” focuses on Locust, Thomas, Washington, assistant running backs coach Jennifer King, and other trailblazing women. It will feature first-hand accounts from NFL owners, coaches, players, officials, agents and other league insiders.

“The pace of change in bringing smart footballers, who just happen to be female, into the game has been really fast,” said Skinner Goodell. “I’m a former reporter and just felt like someone needed to cover this because it’s such a great story for the NFL. It’s so different to think of women in such a heavily male-dominated industry. But I also feel like if you’re in a different industry you could look at it and say I’d like to change something and bring more diverse voices, a wider range of voices into our company or our team, or whatever it might be.”

Singer/songwriter Ciara, wife of Seattle Seahawks star quarterback Russell Wilson, will voice the series.

“I’m honored to be a part of something so special that will no doubt have meaning for so many people,” said Ciara. “I am amazed by their incredible stories and grateful to be able to share them with the world.”

Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians, Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott, Hall of Famer cornerback Deion Sanders and New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley are among many men speaking out about women’s influence on football.

Arians realized that women deserved a chance to coach in the NFL in the early 1990s when he met Dot Murphy, an assistant at Hinds Junior College.

“I trained with them all the time and she was a hell of a coach, so I knew it at the time,” Arians said. “It was only who wanted to open the door. That would be the thing.”

Arians and other prominent trainers helped kick down that door. Washington coach Ron Rivera, in one of the episodes, tells a story about how he stood up at a league meeting and told the owners to consider hiring female coaches.

“You can’t even quantify the impact,” Skinner Goodell said of the coaches’ support.

An organization is more likely to first hire a woman to direct the team’s football activities. The Minnesota Vikings interviewed Philadelphia Eagles vice president of football operations Catherine Raîche this week for the GM job. Prior to the season, the Denver Broncos hired Kelly Kleine as executive director of football operations and special advisor to the general manager.

Susan Tose Spencer was the Eagles’ first and only female general manager in the 1980s. Her father, Leonard Tose, owned the team back then.

In baseball, Kim Ng is the general manager of the Miami Marlins.

“The biggest problem was that a few years ago there was no way for women to get into the league,” Skinner Goodell said. “So creating a pipeline that would allow a really smart, talented soccer woman to get an opportunity to meet a Ron Rivera who could take a chance on her or Kevin Stefanski or Sean McDermott or whoever it may be fact Creating a pipeline was probably the biggest challenge in my opinion. And now that it’s here and becoming more robust, I think we’re likely to continue this pace of change.”

Sam Rapoport, the NFL’s senior director of diversity, equity and inclusion and former professional quarterback, created that pipeline by creating the NFL’s Women’s Careers in Football Forum in 2017.

“You know, the face of the NFL is changing and the look of the NFL is changing,” she said. “And there is no question that this train cannot be slowed down. Progress will continue.”

Next stop: a female head coach in the NFL.

SAN FRANCISCO –

A UC San Francisco laboratory analyzing positive coronavirus test results is a major reason for the rapid identification of the Omicron variant in California, the first documented case in the United States.

Dr. Charles Chiu, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Francisco, routinely analyzes positive coronavirus cases in San Francisco for their genome sequence to identify the variant.

Chiu said he first heard of the positive case at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The moderately ill San Francisco resident, who returned home from a trip to South Africa on November 22, became symptomatic on or around Thanksgiving and was tested for the coronavirus on Sunday. On Monday, the results from another laboratory were positive.

Chius Labor received a sample of the detected coronavirus at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Scientists ran a rapid molecular test that gave results within two hours that suggested, but inconclusive, that the coronavirus that was making residents sick was the Omicron variant.

“To confirm this finding, we had to sequence the genome – the viral genome – of this virus,” said Chiu. By 4 a.m. on Wednesday, the scientists had assembled most of the genome and “we were able to conclusively prove that it was actually an infection with the Omicron variant.”

According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Biden’s senior medical advisor on the pandemic, has also been confirmed that the sequence matches the Omicron variant at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The laboratory sample was sent to UC San Francisco by Color Health, a Burlingame, California-based company that works with the San Francisco Department of Public Health to provide coronavirus testing services.

Virtually all positive coronavirus test results identified by Color Health in San Francisco will be directed to genome sequencing to identify their variant, said Scott Topper, vice president of clinical operations at Color Health.

San Francisco Health Officer Dr. Susan Philip said the quick identification of the Omicron variant would not have been possible without UC San Francisco and Color Health and the resident who chose to get tested for the coronavirus as he acknowledges the recent trip to South Africa and mild symptoms of illness prompted a test.

The resident was at home in San Francisco for a few days before South African scientists announced the discovery of the new variant in question. South Africa announced on November 24th that it had discovered the variant – originally called B.1.1.529.

Two days later, the World Health Organization declared it a “questionable variant” and gave it its Greek letter name Omicron.

The San Francisco resident “realized that he had recently traveled; they realized they had symptoms; and they did what we should all be doing – getting tested, ”said Philip.

The person then contacted the San Francisco Department of Public Health. The person has stayed home, isolated, and the health authorities are in the process of identifying people who may have been in close contact with the resident. Close contact is defined as someone who has been within six feet of someone for 15 minutes or more.

“This person knew about the news from Omicron, so upon their return from the trip they reported appropriately and received their positive test result through the color lab,” said Philip. We “really appreciate this person’s awareness and cooperation in this case.”

The resident was identified by age only – between 18 and 49 – and was fully vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine but had not received a booster, authorities said. Before the infection, the resident was previously healthy and had mild symptoms that did not require hospitalization, officials said.

The person has since recovered, said Dr. Grant Colfax, San Francisco Director of Health.

Close contacts of the resident have so far been tested negatively, said Fauci.

The California Department of Health says everyone “should get tested for COVID-19 immediately if they experience symptoms – regardless of your vaccination status. COVID-19 symptoms can feel like a common cold (including just “the cold”), seasonal allergies, or the flu. The California COVID-19 test is free to anyone who needs it. You can book a free test appointment, find a walk-in testing clinic, or buy a self-test kit at your local drugstore. “

State health officials also advise everyone to wear masks in indoor public places such as grocery stores and movie theaters regardless of vaccination status, and anyone aged 5 and over should be vaccinated. Some California counties require masks to be worn in indoor public places, including most in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as the Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Adults who are already fully vaccinated should get a booster vaccination, health officials say. Those who received their second dose of Pfizer or Moderna syringe at least six months ago or their Johnson & Johnson vaccination at least two months ago are entitled to a booster dose.

In some parts of California, the demand for booster shots is increasing. The county south of San Francisco, San Mateo County recently reported that the demand for booster vaccinations is so great that officials will no longer allow walk-in vaccinations at the county-operated vaccination station at the San Mateo County Event Center and will now demand appointments.

Booster shots are also in great demand in Marin County. Some pharmacies have run out of doses in the past few days and are working on replenishing supplies, KGO-TV recently reported.

The Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, has sworn in the first trans person on the powerful airport commission and its only current LGBTQ member.

In an October 8 press release, Breed stated that Jane Natoli was sworn in on October 7th. The San Francisco Airport Commission is a five-person body tasked with setting guidelines for airport operations. Subject to the approval, amendment or rejection of the board of directors, the commission has the exclusive power to plan and issue revenue bonds for airport-related purposes, according to a press release from the mayor’s office.

Natoli is a bicycle activist who was turned down by the board of directors to a position on the commission of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency in August 2020. She was also nominated for the post by Breed, but had to go through the board’s rules committee and then a full supervisor vote. During this debate, many of the progressive overseers raised concerns about equity issues related to the city’s public transport system. Most overseers considered Natoli qualified, but some opposition came from progressive groups, including the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club.

This time it was a mayor’s meeting that the guards had 30 days to respond if they wanted to reject it by a two-thirds majority. That didn’t happen, as Natoli told the Bay Area Reporter that she was officially nominated on August 31st.

According to the mayor’s office, Natoli is an advocate for safe and affordable transit and the LGBTQ + community. She currently serves on the board of directors of the San Francisco LGBT Community Center.

“I am proud to welcome Jane Natoli to the Airport Commission,” said Breed. “She is a leading advocate of reliable transportation and is deeply committed to the fight for the LGBTQ community. I am confident that her perspective and commitment to our city will benefit this commission.”

SFO is in the middle of a $ 2.4 billion renovation project for Harvey Milk Terminal 1, which will gradually open through 2024. Some airlines are already using the terminal, in which exhibits about the life and political career of the late gay supervisor are on display.

Natoli moved to San Francisco in 2013 and became involved in local politics and community organization. Since 2019, Natoli has served as mayor on the Committee for the Supervision of Government Bonds for General Obligations.

Natoli said she was proud to serve the city in her new role. She replaces Rich Guggenheim, who has resigned after many years of service, according to the mayor’s office.

“It is an honor to be appointed to the Airport Commission and I would like to thank Mayor London Breed for the nomination,” said Natoli. “I’m looking forward to bringing not only my oversight experience from other boards and commissions, but also my perspective as a transgender person. San Francisco is an LGBTQ + capital and SFO is the first point of entry for so many people who come and move there, and I want to ensure that SFO is as welcoming and inclusive as possible to all people. “

Trans leaders also praised the move.

“I am proud to see that Mayor Breed has appointed a member of the trans community to such a prestigious commission. As someone who fights for the representation of trans women in leadership positions, I look forward to bringing all of Jane’s positive experiences into the.” Airport Commission, “said Khilynn Fowler, interim director for Trans Thrive at the San Francisco Community Health Center.

Natoli is a financial crime analyst at Stripe, where she specializes in anti-money laundering investigations. She holds a BS from Iowa State University and is a resident of Inner Richmond.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – Salesforce’s annual conference Dreamforce opened on Tuesday morning for the first time since 2019 on Tuesday morning. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be scaled back from the usual 170,000 participants.

“Dreamforce is known for being such a big event. There will be 1,000 people here this year and over 160,000 will attend online,” said Colin Fleming, Salesforce senior vice president of global brand marketing.

RELATED: Dreamforce 2019 in full swing at San Francisco’s Moscone Center

Salesforce still put a lot of emphasis on presentations. Howard Street between 3rd and 4th Streets is closed and has been converted into an outdoor convention floor with a stage where big names like the rock band The Foo Fighters will perform.

The Foo Fighters will perform on this stage for Dreamforce in San Francisco tonight. The Salesforce Convention was canceled last year and will be smaller this year – with 1,000 participants instead of the usual 170,000. Vaccination and daily testing required. pic.twitter.com/6mjKsEiGCn

– Amy Hollyfield (@amyhollyfield) September 21, 2021

“We have Will Smith, Emmy Award winner Jason Sudeikis … Dreamforce Magic is back here in San Francisco,” said Fleming.

But it’s not quite the magic that businesses in the area need.

The owner of The Grove restaurant on Mission and 3rd Street says the 170,000 visitors last year really lifted his business.

“It was incredibly important to us and everyone around the block. They (Salesforce) bought the restaurants, parts of the museums. It was a big part of our annual budget, our viability. Those three days were equivalent.” for three weeks, “said Kenneth Zankel.

However, he went on to say that 1,000 people sound good by COVID standards.

WATCH: Here’s what Bay Area traffic controllers are doing to prepare for the return of the San Francisco workers

“If it weren’t for last year it would be really disappointing, but 1,000 is better than zero. And hopefully this is the beginning of further development, ”said the restaurant owner.

He said business picked up again on Monday when people arrived in San Francisco for Dreamforce.

“When you look at the people walking around. That didn’t happen down here, ”he said, looking down Mission Street.

In a gruesome twist, it won’t be open for happy hour or dinner at Dreamforce. It closes at 3 p.m. because it can’t find enough workers to fill the evenings, another lingering effect of COVID-19.

“We get it bit by bit, but it’s a fight. It’s the ultimate strange dichotomy, you have a demand and then you can’t meet it,” said Zankel.

RELATED: How will downtown San Francisco businesses on Union Square recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?

The number of people isn’t the only change at Dreamforce this year. Participants will also be presented with pandemic safety protocols.

“We will be doing multiple tests on site, vaccination of course, with tests every single day we attend the conference,” said Fleming.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – In a unanimous vote Tuesday evening, San Jose City Council approved the first gun control measure of its kind.

The first would require that every gun owner have liability insurance for their firearms. The insurance could not legally cover intentional damage caused by a gun owner.

CONTINUE READING: Prosecutor says San Jose mother admitted strangling 7-year-old son

The second requires gun owners to pay an annual fee to reimburse taxpayers for public costs of responding to gun-related injuries and deaths, including police and medical services.

San Jose is the first city in the country to adopt such measures. The new laws are part of a gun control plan proposed by Mayor Sam Liccardo earlier this month after the mass shooting of a disgruntled Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) employee at a light rail station in San Jose.

“It is also the case that the Second Amendment, while securing the right to own a weapon, does not require that we as taxpayers subsidize the possession of these weapons,” Liccardo said during the virtual meeting.

According to Liccardo, gun liability insurance is comparable to car insurance in that it encourages responsible ownership, storage and use of guns. He said the fees would be modest – possibly between $ 25 and $ 30.

CONTINUE READING: ‘Epidemic of Hate;’ California AG Bonta releases new data on rising hate crime

“We know crooks won’t buy insurance. Of course not, ”said Liccardo. “So when a police officer answers a domestic violence call and asks the question every officer asks, ‘Are there guns in the house?’ at this point the officer can determine whether this person has followed the law to take out insurance. “

Gun lawyers said the measures will punish law-abiding gun owners and will challenge the city’s decision in court. They doubt that they have much influence on gun violence and are likely to come into conflict with the second amendment.

“We believe it is clearly unconstitutional for the government at any level to charge some kind of fee before someone can exercise an enumerated constitutional right,” said Sam Paredes of Gun Owners of California.

Two weeks ago, the city council passed law requiring retailers to videotape all gun purchases, making it the largest city in California with such a rule.

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco has officially become the first Bay Area county to enter the yellow tier in California’s reopening plan this year.

It’s the least restrictive tier, and comes with several loosened rules that San Francisco hasn’t experienced since November — just before the hard-hitting winter COVID-19 surge that caused a stay at home order across the state.

California officials made the announcement on Tuesday, and businesses can start allowing more capacity as soon as Wednesday morning.

Here are San Francisco’s new face mask rules

By June 15, Gov. Newsom has set an expectation for the whole state to fully reopen, nullifying the tier system.
