Catcher Buster Posey, who won three World Series titles and was named All-Star seven times in his 12 seasons with the San Francisco Giants, will announce his retirement from baseball on Thursday, a person with knowledge of the situation facing United States TODAY Sports has been confirmed.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not allowed to speak publicly.

Posey, who put the COVID-shortened 2020 season on hold because he and his wife adopted newborn twin girls, ended his playing career on a high level – with a hit of 0.304 and a punch of 0.499 in 113 games, leading the Giants to an MLB best 107 wins.

A first-round pick in the 2005 draft (fifth overall) from the state of Florida, Posey made his Major League debut in 2009, and was named Rookie of the Year in the National League the following season when the Giants defeated the Texas Rangers to win the world series for the first time since moving to San Francisco.

In 2012, Posey won the NL fighting title averaging 0.336, was named to his first All-Star team, and was named a league MVP when the Giants swept the Detroit Tigers in the World Series.

Posey and the Giants added a third World Series crown in 2014, defeating the Kansas City Royals in an epic seven-game thriller.

Posey ended his career as a .302 lifetime hitter with a .372 on-base percentage and .460 slugging percentage – all excellent numbers for a catcher. He is a four-time Silver Slugger winner for his offensive and won a Gold Glove for best defensive catcher in the league in 2016.

With 1,093 players, he ranks fourth among the active players in catcher games, behind Yadier Molina, Kurt Suzuki and Jonathan Lucroy. However, he also played 229 games on first base.

The San Francisco Giants placed all-star catcher Buster Posey on the 10-day injury list with a bruise of his left thumb, the team said on Friday.

Posey, 34, has not played since his injury in the sixth inning of a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 4th. The move took place retrospectively on Tuesday.

He was injured after firing an awkward shot at his glove after being fouled by Daulton Varsho. An X-ray of the thumb at the time was negative, but an MRI on Thursday revealed a bruised bone.

“If you’ve bruised your heel while running, it can be quite painful and you can make it worse again pretty easily,” manager Gabe Kapler said Friday. “I imagine being back and catching balls that are moving all over the place.”

Posey was chosen to start as a catcher for the National League in the All-Star game next week but said on Friday that he won’t make the trip to Denver.

“I’m of course disappointed,” said Posey, who has now set up seven All-Star teams. “It’s an honor to play in this game. I know my oldest two [kids] were excited to be there. But these things happen and you move on. “

Posey beats .328 with 12 homers for the Giants, who entered the NL with the best record on Friday.

In a corresponding move, the Giants activated the right-hander Logan Webb.

Updates from March 6th to 7th: Lillard scores 32 points, Simons wins the slam dunk competition; College baseball, softball, volleyball, and more

NBA All-Star Game – The Trail Blazers Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons caused a sensation at Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game in Atlanta.

Lillard scored 32 points and took two half-pitch shots as he helped Team LeBron beat Team Durant 170-150 in the pseudo basketball game.

Lillard was the second top scorer in the game but didn’t make all 16 shots like MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo on the defense-frowning show.

Lillard during the half-field shots, one at the end of the first half and a second to win for Team LeBron:

“I didn’t do it in an actual game, but tested it in live action (now). Felt decent, fine. Like a regular jumper. I can shoot it pretty easily.”

Simons made a name for himself at halftime and became the first Portland player to win the slam dunk competition.

Simons defeated rookies Obi Toppin of the Knicks and Cassius Stanley of the Pacers in the competition and made a name for himself by almost kissing the edge as he dived.

The competition was judged by five former dunk champions: Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, Spud Webb, Dee Brown, Jason Richardson, and Josh Smith.

“Having the chance to be a part of it and win is surreal,” said Simons.

College Baseball – After the state of Oregon beat BYU, it will face Oregon 10-1 in Corvallis this Friday through Sunday. The Beavers had excellent pitching, not allowing more than three runs in any one of 10 straight wins. Team ERA is 1.64 and their opponents beat .172.

Oregon (6-2) won four games at UC Santa Barbara last weekend, the first four-game race by a high-ranking opponent in program history. The ducks defeated UCSB 38-16 and fought .302 with 14 extra base hits in the sweep.

Portland played one of three games outside the Gonzaga conference and was 3-6 over the weekend in a March 9 game in Washington and a four-game home game against Utah Valley.

College Cross Country – The University of Portland’s men’s and women’s teams and the Oregon State women’s team will compete in the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships held in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Monday, March 15 (TV live at 9:30 a.m.) ESPNU).

The pilot men are 17th. UP women 20 are led by WCC Champion Anna Pataki. The OSU women finished fourth in the program at the Pac-12 Championships on March 5 and are being referred to nationals for the second time in program history.

Individually, Oregon Redshirt Senior (Sheldon High) will have his third individual appearance at the NCAA championships.

Oregon’s focus is on the NCAA Indoor Track Championships, where the Duck men (12 entries) are # 1. The Duck women have eight entries in the indoor championship.

College Volleyball – Oregon made a dazzling comeback on March 7, beating seventh Washington in five straight sets. The huskies swept the first meeting last weekend and then did the first two sets on Sunday before the ducks recovered. Oregon (9-3) will play two games at Stanford next.

The State of Oregon (5-7) will host Washington State on March 12-14, after winning both games in California.

Portland State scored its first Big Sky win, defeating Montana in four straight sets on March 7th. The same teams should play on Monday.

College Men’s Football – The Portland Pilots will host Loyola Marymount on Sunday March 14 at 1:00 p.m. to claim their first WCC victory after losing 2-1 at Pacific on March 7.

Oregon State, 6-0, and 10th on United Soccer Coaches poll on March 2nd, face a big game on Saturday, March 13th at Stanford in 3rd place.

College Women’s Football – Two goals from Taryn Ries led Portland to a 2-0 win over Pacific on March 6. The pilots (2-2-0, 1-2-0 WCC) play in San Francisco on March 13th.

Oregon (2-3-1, 1-2 Pac-12) and Oregon State (2-4-0, 0-3-0) lost at UCLA and USC respectively last week, with the Beavers being UCLA No. 3 in overtime resulted in a 2-1 loss. Schools in Arizona visit the Willamette Valley for Friday and Sunday games.

College Softball – Oregon State is scheduled to visit Oregon for a non-conference game on Saturday March 13th. This is part of a weekend where the Beavers (8-5) and Ducks (13-1) host Nevada and Sacramento State. Oregon’s only defeat goes to UCLA No. 1, and the Ducks have a win over the Bruins.

Portland State is 1-8 en route to Seattle for games against Seattle U and Washington in 5th place.

DENVER (CBS4) – The MLB All-Star game will take place at Coors Field this summer, the Colorado Rockies confirmed on Tuesday. The game will take place on Tuesday, July 13th – and it is expected to be at full capacity.

The game was originally intended to be played in Atlanta, but last week Major League Baseball announced it would be moving the game out of Georgia after the state changed its electoral laws.

“Major League Baseball is grateful to the Rockies, the city of Denver, and the state of Colorado for supporting this summer’s All-Star Game. We value their flexibility and enthusiasm to deliver a first class event for our game and the region. We look forward to celebrating the best players in our sport and entertaining fans around the world, ”said Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. in a statement.

– Governor Jared Polis (@GovofCO) April 6, 2021

MLB officials said they chose the Rockies because they were already in the process of applying for a future All-Star game.

“The Rockies had come up with a detailed hotel, event space, and security plan that took months to assemble, and the MLB staff had already made several on-site visits to Denver. In addition, Governor Jared Polis and Mayor Michael Hancock have pledged to provide the facilities and services necessary to support this year’s celebrations, ”officials said.

Governor Jared Polis said it was great news for baseball fans – and Colorado’s economy.

“Get ready for a truly epic home run derby one mile above sea level. It’s going to be a lot of fun, ”said Governor Polis.

According to Polis, officials appreciate the all-star game. The All-Star Game Celebration will result in sales of approximately $ 190 million in Colorado this year.

“This is incredibly good news for our small businesses, restaurants or hotels and our employees who have suffered from this pandemic,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock on Tuesday.

NEW YORK (AP) – Major League Baseball announced Friday that this summer’s All-Star game would be relocated from Truist Park in Atlanta. This is in response to Georgia enacted a new law restricting voting rights last month.

MLB had awarded the game to Atlanta in May 2019, and the game was scheduled for July 13th as part of baseball’s midsummer break, which includes the futures game on July 11th and the home run derby the following night.

CONTINUE READING: COVID restrictions for vaccinated travelers; Traffic at the airports in the Bay Area is increasing

Commissioner Rob Manfred made the decision to postpone the All-Star events and the amateur draft, which was to be held in Atlanta for the first time. A new baseball field for this year’s events was not immediately revealed.

MLB’s announcement came eight days after Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a major Republican-sponsored revision of the state election that included new restrictions on postal voting and increased legislative control over the conduct of elections.

Manfred made the decision after talking to the Major League Baseball Players Association, individual players, and the Players Alliance, a black player organization founded after George Floyd’s death last year.

“I’ve decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is to move this year’s All-Star Game and MLB draft,” Manfred said in a statement. “Major League Baseball fundamentally supports the voting rights of all Americans and opposes ballot box restrictions.”

“Fair access to voting continues to be steadfastly supported by our game,” said Manfred.

Other sports have postponed high profile events due to social issues.

For years, the NCAA did not hold championships in states that officially recognized the Confederate flag.

This year’s All-Star Game includes honoring Hank Aaron, the Braves’ Hall of Famer and former career home run champion, who passed away on January 22nd at the age of 86.

“We will continue our plans to celebrate the memory of Hank Aaron during this season’s All-Star Celebrations,” said Manfred. Additionally, MLB’s planned investments to support local communities in Atlanta will continue as part of our All-Star Legacy projects. We are completing a new host city and details of these events will be announced shortly. “

MLB has canceled last year’s All-Star Game, which was scheduled for Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, due to the late and shortened season due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The 2022 game will be played at Dodger Stadium.

Major League Baseball announced Friday that it was postponing this year’s All-Star game and bailing out of Atlanta in response to a new electoral law in Georgia that critics say will affect non-white voters.

“Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and rejects ballot box restrictions,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred in a statement.

“In 2020 MLB became the first professional sports league to join the non-partisan Civic Alliance to help build a future where everyone is involved in shaping the United States. We are proud to have used our platform to encourage baseball fans and communities in our country to fulfill their civic duties and actively participate in the voting process. Fair access to voting continues to be steadfastly supported by our game. “

MLB planned to hold the 2021 All-Star Game at Truist Park, home of the Braves, and conduct its annual draft in Atlanta during All-Star Week, July 11-13. MLB did not identify a new website for the game or draft in its Friday release, but the league needs to find a decent replacement for the game soon given the amount of planning involved.

One possible location: San Francisco. Oracle Park is among those locations that top the list as a tourist destination due to the beauty of the ballpark and the city’s resources, including a decent number of hotel rooms that could be used on relatively short notice.

It is believed the Giants would be interested in the event, which has not been held in San Francisco since 2007. Many teams won’t feel like playing hosts given the short timeframe, as one of the biggest incentives is the ability to set up corporate sponsors and season ticket holders based on event access prior to the season, which will not be possible for the year.

San Francisco’s current health mandate of 22 percent capacity at Oracle Park could be seen as an obstacle, but by July the park could be almost at full capacity again, and if it doesn’t, other areas of the country are likely to find themselves in a similar situation. Some states that have fewer restrictions on stadium capacity, such as Texas, are considering voter restriction laws similar to Georgia’s, among other things.

MLB continues to plan to celebrate Hank Aaron over the All-Star Weekend and invest in Atlanta communities as part of its All-Star Legacy Projects.

“We are completing a new host city and details of these events will be announced shortly,” the statement said.

						CBS NEWS

President Biden says he would “strongly support” Major League Baseball All-Star Game moved from Atlanta as a reprimand for severe new electoral restrictions in the state. The president said on ESPN Wednesday night that the curbs “just aren’t right”.

“This is Jim Crow about steroids, what they are doing in Georgia and 40 other states,” he said. “What it is about – imagine you are passing a law that says you cannot provide water or food to anyone in line to vote. Can’t do that. Come on? Or do you close a polling station at 5 a.m. when working people are getting out?

“This is about preventing working and normal people I grew up with from being able to vote. Come on.”

Mr Biden’s testimony came as a backlash against the new borders was mounting.

Some of Georgia’s most prominent corporate leaders began to criticize the sweeping new law more violently on Wednesday, recognizing the concerns of civil rights activists, black clergy and black business leaders who said the measure would target non-white voters and threaten the democratic process.

Delta and Coca-Cola executives turned to earlier, more ambiguous statements and called the law “unacceptable”. This opened an unusual chasm with Republican leaders who campaigned for legislation and usually had a comfortable relationship with the state’s business community.

But the legislature stated that they were not backing down. The Republicans in the Georgia House of Representatives voted late Wednesday to withdraw a tens of millions of dollars’ worth of tax breaks a year from Delta. While this was done symbolically when the Senate did not take the measure before the adjournment of its annual session, it was a reminder of the avenues politicians could take.

Georgia’s business lobby, home to 18 Fortune 500 companies, has made a significant impact on state policy. Civil rights activists accused influential executives of failing to advance the new law, which has become a focal point of the nationwide party-political struggle for the right to vote, and at the national level there is mounting pressure on corporate titans to defend the suffrage more explicitly and join the Republican Oppose efforts in states that might follow Georgia’s leadership. The latest statements by Delta and Coca-Cola could push Georgia’s other marquee brands, including UPS and Home Depot, to take a stronger position.

UPS and Home Depot still haven’t publicly spoken out against the law.

“Delta’s statement is finally telling the truth – even if it’s late,” said Nsé Ufot of the New Georgia Project, which has launched an advertising campaign for large companies.

The new law has sparked calls for boycotts at large Georgia-based corporations

After Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed it last week, Delta issued a statement promoting parts of the law like the extended weekend vote. However, he said, “We understand that concerns about other regulations remain … and work on this important effort continues.”

Delta and Coca-Cola are becoming more powerful

CEO Ed Bastian was blunt in a memo sent to employees on Wednesday.

“The entire rationale for this bill was based on a lie: There was widespread electoral fraud in Georgia in the 2020 elections. That’s just not true, “wrote Bastian, alluding to the false claims made by former President Trump that he lost to fraud. “Unfortunately, states across the country are using this excuse trying to pass similar laws to restrict voting rights.”

Bastian said Delta has joined other major Atlanta corporations to work closely with elected officials from both parties in an attempt to get some of the most egregious measures out of the bill. We have had some success in removing the most oppressive tactics that some suggested. “

But he said, “I need to make it clear that the final calculation is unacceptable and does not match Delta’s values.”

Coca-Cola boss James Quincey later spoke about CNBC, calling the legislation “a step backwards”.

“It does not promote the principles that we advocated in Georgia regarding wide access to voting, the convenience of voters and ensuring electoral integrity,” he said. “This legislation is wrong and needs to be fixed.”

Kemp insisted that the law was misrepresented. He accused companies of ignoring their role in their development.

“Throughout the legislative process, we have spoken directly to Delta officials several times,” the governor said in a statement. “Today’s statement … is in stark contrast to our conversations with the company, ignoring the content of the new law and unfortunately continues to spread the same false attacks repeated by partisan activists.”

Perhaps one of the reasons some of these companies’ viewpoints matter is because Coca-Cola, Delta, and Home Depot have boards of directors that are more diverse than the average S&P 500 company. Four out of 15 UPS board members are black people, or nearly 30%. A recent study by recruiting firm Spencer Stuart found that the largest 200 companies in the S&P 500 stock index had an average of 10% of their board members black. Latino directors made up another 4%.

For Coca-Cola, three of the 12 board members, or 25%, are black people, while Delta and Home Depot have two out of 12 or 17% different board members.

The pressure is growing

Suffrage groups continued to fight the legislation, criticizing corporate actors for not trying to block it altogether.

Ufot accused Bastian of his timing and alluded to discussions “with managers and employees of the Black Community” late in the process. She also noted the upcoming demands by advocates that Delta and other companies no longer use their political action committees to support lawmakers who support election restrictions.

Bastian’s memo did not address the matter. Quincey noted on CNBC that Coca-Cola had suspended its PAC activities prior to Georgia’s action and would consider politicians’ position on the right to vote as part of future contributions.

Also on Wednesday dozens of black business leaders from across the country, including Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier and former American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault, published a joint letter in the New York Times urging American companies to vigorously engage in issues of racial justice.

“The reality is that companies have been silent on this issue, and that’s why we said action needed to be taken,” Chenault told CBS This Morning on Wednesday.

Black activists, meanwhile, recalled that many US companies took a public position last summer amid national demonstrations against systemic racism and police violence.

Bishop Reginald Jackson, who heads more than 400 African Methodist Episcopal Churches in Georgia, said too many corporate leaders had “remained silent” about electoral laws. He urged his 90,000 parishioners to boycott Delta, Coca-Cola and other big brands.

“This is not just a problem or a problem in Georgia. It’s a national problem that we believe threatens our democracy, ”Jackson said.

Business analysts say dynamics are challenging for companies.

“Delta clearly felt a lot of heat for his previous statement. Delta’s problem now is credibility, ”said Henry Harteveldt, an analyst for the San Francisco travel industry. “Will people believe future statements or actions by Delta regarding voting rights or social justice?”

Civil rights groups have filed federal lawsuits to repeal Georgian law. Otherwise, they have focused on Washington, where the Democrats are pushing a major federal overhaul of the electoral law that could effectively override many changes passed in Georgia that are being considered elsewhere. Lawyers want business leaders like Bastian and Quincey to help.

“This is Jim Crow about steroids, what they are doing in Georgia and 40 other states,” he said. “What it’s about – imagine you passing a law that says you can’t provide water or food to anyone in line to vote. You can’t. Come on? Or you close a polling station at 5 p.m. if you’re just working. ” get away

“This is about preventing working and common people I grew up with from voting.

Delta and Coca-Cola executives turned on earlier, more ambiguous statements and called the law “unacceptable,” opening an unusual chasm with Republican leaders who advocate the law and tend to be comfortable with the state’s business community .

“The entire rationale for this bill was based on a lie: that there was widespread electoral fraud in Georgia in the 2020 elections. This is simply not true,” wrote Bastian, alluding to former President Trump’s false claims that he was because of Fraud lost. “Unfortunately, states across the country are using this excuse trying to pass similar laws to restrict voting rights.”

Bastian said Delta “joined other large Atlanta corporations in working closely with elected officials from both parties in an attempt to get some of the most outrageous measures out of the bill. We have had some success in removing the most oppressive tactics proposed by some.” had.”

But he said, “I need to make it clear that the final calculation is unacceptable and inconsistent with Delta’s values.”

Ufot accused Bastian of his timing and alluded to discussions “with executives and employees of the Black Community” late in the process.

Bishop Reginald Jackson, who presides over 400 African Methodist episcopal churches in Georgia, said too many corporate leaders “remained silent” about electoral laws. He urged his 90,000 parishioners to boycott Delta, Coca-Cola and other big brands.

“This is not just a problem or a problem in Georgia. It is a national problem that we believe threatens our democracy,” Jackson said.

Business analysts say dynamics are challenging for companies.

“Delta clearly felt a lot of heat for his previous testimony. Delta’s problem now is credibility,” said Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst in San Francisco.
