CHICAGO (NewsNation) — With the summer months just around the corner, what better way for Americans to spend their time than by preparing for winter?

Now that the sun is shining and the grilling is in full swing in the garden, home maintenance experts say now is the perfect time of year to prepare your home for the colder months.

In addition, Americans could save money in the long run by being proactive and performing maintenance regularly.

Danny Horboychuk, brand president of The Brothers That Just Do Gutters, said in a recent press release that the best time for winter prevention is summer. He explained that it's a proactive approach to keeping home maintenance on top of its game while avoiding risks associated with freezing weather, such as burst pipes and carbon monoxide buildup.

No, you don't need to get out your shovels or turn up your ceiling fans just yet. But here are some ways Americans can start preparing their homes for the colder months now.

Some Floridians have to work 100 hours a week to afford an apartment

Reseal windows and doors

(Getty Images)

According to the Department of Energy, about 30% of a home's heat is lost through windows, especially during the cooler months, so homeowners should check the seals around windows and doors.

Resealing windows and doors not only helps keep heat in the home, but also helps Americans save on energy costs.

Bill Richardson, past president of the American Society of Home Inspectors in Albuquerque, told Kiplinger that homeowners should replace their window and door seals every five to 10 years. Viessmann reported that some weatherstripping lasts only a few years before wearing out.

If the gaps are larger than a nickel, the outside of the house will need to be resealed, according to Richardson. He suggested using silicone caulk on the outside because it doesn't shrink and can withstand the elements, Kiplinger reported.

New regulation on overtime pay comes into force: Who is entitled to it?

Have heating systems serviced

A craftsman repairs a boiler in a house. (Getty Images)

Imagine this: the autumn months are coming to an end and the first frosts are hitting. You want to turn on the heating, but nothing happens. What happens then? Well, it gets very cold and who knows when your maintenance technician will next have time to repair your heating.

By promptly inspecting and maintaining their heating systems, Americans can be protected from this hypothetical, unfortunate event.

In addition, investing in annual maintenance of the heating system can save money in the long run. Whether it's a furnace, boiler or heat pump, homeowners should hire a professional to inspect, clean and repair any potential damage, according to Kiplinger. The expert will also look for and measure carbon monoxide leaks, the report says.

By cleaning the heating filters you can also maintain the efficiency of your heating system and reduce the risk of fire in the house.

“Boommates”: A growing trend to combat unaffordable housing

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Male home inspector checks the functionality of a smoke and carbon monoxide detector during a home inspection of a residential building. (Getty Images)

This should become a habit, but just in case, here's a reminder: Check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Also, make sure they're actually working—most systems have an option to test the alarm.

Why is this so important for winter preparation? According to the U.S. Fire Administration, heating is one of the most common causes of building fires during the winter. Additionally, carbon monoxide is an even bigger problem in the winter when gases can build up inside without proper ventilation, Nomad reported.

Which burger chain has the most expensive prices?

Don’t forget to inspect the roof

Close-up of a roofer removing old roof shingles. (Getty Images)

A roof inspection is one of the preventative measures that most Americans ignore or simply forget about, but it's easy to determine if the roof is damaged by using binoculars.

If roof shingles are loose, missing or simply damaged, they must be repaired or replaced.

Those who want a more thorough inspection can hire a contractor to replace or repair the damage, according to homeguide.com. The cost is estimated to be between $100 and $300 (depending on the type of damage being repaired).

How to become a “super saver” for retirement

Have the chimney checked

A chimney sweep stands on the roof of a house and cleans a chimney. He lowers tools into the flue. (Getty Images)

While you're at it, homeowners with chimneys should also have them inspected and cleaned. According to Kipling, cleaning chimneys is an excellent preventative measure to avoid house fires and carbon monoxide buildup.

Additionally, the National Fire Protection Association recommends that homeowners have heaters and chimneys cleaned annually.

Check and clean dryer vents

A flexible aluminum dryer exhaust duct used to evacuate dirty laundry is filled with lint, dust and dirt. (Getty Images)

Just like chimneys, dryer vents are a major cause of house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. It is imperative to have dryer vents inspected and cleaned before the winter months.

Sarasota topped the list in 2021, according to PODS’ moving trends.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla — Since the COVID-19 pandemic set in, many Americans have packed up and moved to states in the Southeast.

Whether it be due to working remotely, the desire to live closer to family or simply looking for a new ZIP code, moving and storage company PODS says Americans are packing up and settling in new cities.

While the moving company cannot predict the future, based on 2021 trends, PODS has comprised a list of the top 20 cities where people are moving to, and the Tampa Bay area tops the list.

Coming in the No. 1 spot, Sarasota led the nation in the highest increase in resides from January 2021 through March 2022. The Dallas-Fort Worth area ranked second and Nashville followed behind. In the fourth spot is the Tampa Bay region among US cities that have seen the most growth.

PODS says the move could be influenced by less volatile seasonal weather changes and more space to access nature — have you seen Clearwater Beach?

RELATED: Sarasota, Manatee counties see average home prices skyrocket to more than $500K

But what about where people are moving from? According to PODS, three California cities are among the Top 10 cities where residents are making a grand exit in 2021, and it’s continued in 2022.

Officials said the move could stem from high state taxes and the cost of living. In addition, PODS believes permanent remote policies could be another factor for the high number of moves out of the cities on the list.

The top cities people are moving out of include Los Angeles, the San Francisco area, Chicago, Long Island, NY, and Central New Jersey.

Job-rich, low-tax countries like the one in the Sun Belt attract many Americans as house prices rise, various recent reports show.

Online real estate marketplace Zillow and moving company U-Haul named Florida and Texas as hot moving destinations in separate reports, while United Van Lines listed Florida and South Carolina among the top states for immigration.

“The Sun Belt states are more affordable and generally have lower tax burdens and more jobs,” said Lawrence Yun, chief economist of the National Association of Realtors, the largest trade association in the industry with 1.5 million members.

Peter C. Earle, a free market economist at the American Institute for Economic Research in Massachusetts, said “a large part” of pandemic migration will continue to be “from states with the strictest pandemic policies towards more relaxed ones.”

“The economies of those states that have used more hands-off policies to tackle the spread of COVID are now growing faster than those that have been repeatedly locked down,” Earle said. “Plus, if a bad bug occurs, people generally want to know that they won’t be unemployed or have to shut down their business overnight, and states like Texas and Florida make that possibility unlikely.”

Zillow reported last week that the sun belt will dominate its list of the hottest real estate markets for the second straight year. Tampa and Jacksonville, Florida; San Antonio, Texas; and Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina will lead US markets as house prices rise 14% nationwide.

Additionally, Zillow predicted that New York City, Milwaukee, San Francisco, and Chicago will see the coolest housing markets in 2022 due to fewer jobs and less favorable demographic trends.

The real estate company based its report on projections of home appreciation, housing permits, and housing offers.

Mr. Yun of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) predicts that house prices will rise “more moderately” this year, rising 5.7% instead of Zillow’s forecast of 14%.

Eight of the major metropolitan areas for which the NAR is forecasting higher price increases this year are in the Sun Belt states: Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; Daphne-Fairhope-Farley and Huntsville, Alabama; Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, Florida; Pensacola Ferry Pass-Brent, Florida; San Antonio-New Braunfels, Texas; Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Tucson, Arizona.

Meanwhile, U-Haul reported in its annual growth index last week that Texas ousted Florida with the largest net gain in one-way trucks in 2021, while California and Illinois posted the largest net losses.

Californians were traveling to Texas so quickly that U-Haul “just ran out of inventory” to help them move last year, the company said.

And United Van Lines reported in its 45th annual National Movers Study that two Sun Belt states made the top 5 for immigration in 2021: South Carolina (63%) and Florida (62%) joined Vermont, South Dakota (69%) and West on Virginia (63%).

States like Illinois (67%), New York (63%), Connecticut (60%) and California (59%) were again at the top of the churn list.

“The pandemic has drawn many New York, New Jersey, and California buyers to paradise,” said Nicol Jenkins, a Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based real estate agent.

Mr. Earle of the American Institute for Economic Research said changes in federal tax law and the recent spike in inflation have made Americans more cost conscious than they have been in decades, and they are leaving “the expensive high-tax areas of the US” in the northeast coast and California for the cheaper sunbelt region. “

“When people move, they tell friends and family, some of whom will follow,” he said. “When companies move, they bring employees and families with them and motivate other companies to do so.”

(The Hill) – Fewer Americans are moving into new homes than ever since the government started keeping track as demographic trends collide with a hot housing market where prices are rising from lack of supply.

New data from the US Census Bureau shows that only 8.4 percent of Americans live in a different home than they did a year ago. This is the lowest movement rate the office has seen since 1948.

This percentage means that around 27.1 million people moved in the last year, also the lowest value ever recorded.

The number of Americans moving from one home to another has been falling for decades, said Cheryl Russell, author of the Demo Memo blog on demographic trends. In the 1950s and 1960s, roughly one in five Americans moved in any given year. Up to the turn of the century it was 14 percent and a decade ago it was 11.6 percent.

The more sedentary population is the result of a handful of demographic factors that have grown as the American population has aged, the aftermath of the Great Recession a decade ago continues, and the pandemic is holding back many people’s plans.

3 in 4 Americans say their life is “normal” again: survey

Edward Berchick, a senior population scientist at online real estate firm Zillow, said all of these factors contributed to fewer home sales.

Older people tend to exercise less. And since fewer Americans have children – the birth rate is also lower than ever before – fewer families feel the need to move to bigger homes. The pandemic also cautioned shoppers as they protected themselves from the virus.

“Right now there is a lot of uncertainty about longer-term plans,” said Berchick. “When there is some economic uncertainty, people just pause their plans.”

The aging population plays an important role. Never before has the United States had so many residents over the age of 65 – an age when people are most likely to own their own homes and are the least likely to be under pressure to move.

“Aging boomers cling to their homes the way older Americans do,” Russell said in an email. “Boomers are in the phase of life in which people normally stand still. As older Americans increasingly dominate home ownership, the top-heavy age structure has reduced inventory and dampened mobility. “

At the same time, apartment hunters come across some of the highest prices ever recorded. Zillow data shows the typical home value is $ 312,000, up 19 percent from last year and a projected increase of another 13 percent in the coming year.

Prices are rising not only in large cities like New York, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington, DC, but also in smaller mid-size metropolitan areas. Data compiled by Realtor.com, an online real estate agency, found the hottest markets in the United States are in Manchester, NH, Burlington, NC, east of Greensboro, and Eureka, California.

More Americans Say They Are Unlikely to Ever Have Children: Poll

Three Indiana cities – Elkhart, Lafayette, and Fort Wayne – are also some of the hottest markets in the country.

The rising prices mean that home hunters are entering a market where their dollar is no longer as high as it used to be. Persistent housing shortages and construction, which slowed during the pandemic, in part due to problems with the supply chain and workforce, have pushed property prices even higher.

(The Hill) – Fewer Americans are moving into new homes than ever since the government started keeping track as demographic trends collide with a hot housing market where prices are rising due to lack of supply.

Stay up to date with the latest news and weather with the FOX8 mobile app.

New data from the US Census Bureau shows that only 8.4 percent of Americans live in a different home than they did a year ago. This is the lowest movement rate the office has seen since 1948.

That proportion means around 27.1 million people moved in the last year, also the lowest number ever recorded.

The number of Americans moving from one home to another has been falling for decades, said Cheryl Russell, who writes the Demo Memo blog on demographic trends. In the 1950s and 1960s, roughly one in five Americans moved in any given year. Up to the turn of the century it was 14 percent and a decade ago it was 11.6 percent.

The more sedentary population is the product of a handful of demographic factors that have grown as the American population ages, as the aftermath of the Great Recession a decade ago continues and the pandemic slows many people’s plans.

Never before has the United States had so many residents over 65 – an age when people are most likely to own their own homes and are the least likely to be under pressure to move.

“Aging boomers cling to their homes the way older Americans do,” Russell said in an email. “Boomers are in the phase of life that people normally stay in.

Prices are rising not only in large cities like New York, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington, DC, but also in smaller midsize metropolitan areas. Data compiled by Realtor.com, an online real estate agency, found the hottest markets in the United States are in Manchester, NH, Burlington, NC, east of Greensboro, and Eureka, California.

Three Indiana cities – Elkhart, Lafayette, and Fort Wayne – are also some of the hottest markets in the country.

The soaring prices mean those looking for a home are entering a market where their dollar is not going as far as it used to be. Persistent housing shortages and construction, which slowed during the pandemic, in part due to problems with the supply chain and labor, have pushed house prices even higher.

The data from the Census Bureau shows that the total number of housing units grew by only 6.6 percent between 2010 and 2020, while the number of vacant apartments decreased by 8.6 percent, a sign that the market is more likely to become scarcer than expands.

“Over the past several decades, population growth has outpaced housing supply growth,” said Berchick.

The first floor of the Italian-American Social Club is decorated with scarlet velvet wallpaper, dark wood paneling, and a jukebox in the corner. A US flag, an Italian flag and mostly black and white photos hang on the walls. Brass chandeliers with red dotted wall lights and carved decorations frame the long wooden rod. To one side is the restaurant’s dining room, which has a handful of tables with checkered tablecloths. The dining room is smaller than the bar.

“Every place is different,” says club manager Julie Clima, “except here”.

Clima and I were sitting in the dining room at 25 Russia Avenue at the Excelsior, which was empty. The bar was also empty. In the back hall of the building there was just one other employee setting up chairs for a weekend event.

She wasn’t expecting any restaurant guests that evening. It was a Wednesday after all. The restaurant started takeout in 2020 but it didn’t seem like a lot of people would benefit from it.

Though North Beach is known as San Francisco’s “Little Italy,” the Excelsior’s farms and ranches once attracted many Italians whose eyes glittered with the American dream around the turn of the century.

In the 1920s, many of these Italian-American men, mostly first or second generation immigrants, gathered in garages across the Excelsior to drink wine, eat cheese, and play a game of cards called Pedro. Then, in 1935, the Italian-American Social Club (IASC) was founded.

The IASC, like other Italian social clubs in the US, provided a place to relax and belong to the Excelsior’s Italian immigrant community. Italian men who paid a membership fee were able to use the IASC’s game room, ballroom and other facilities and attend exclusive dinners and events. The number of members was always limited to just over 200 and restricted only to men. Club members received and continue to receive a portion of the IASC building that has been paid off for decades.

“There used to be five, six, seven years on the waiting list,” said Paul Giusto, chairman of the IASC.

Clima grew up in her father’s restaurant, Joe’s Fish Grotto, at Mission and Cotter. She recalls dozens of Italian-owned companies that once adorned the stretch of Mission Street between Geneva and Silver, the main street of the Excelsior. The Royal Baking Company supplied fresh bread to local restaurants. Valente, Marini, Perata & Co. Funeral Home hosted dinner at the IASC. Bars like Cotter’s Corner, which was next to Joe’s Fish Grotto, opened at six in the morning to pour drinks for the garbage collectors after work.

“People waited an hour and a half for food,” says Clima, “it used to be a lot going on.”

Giusto is a local from Excelsior who eventually took over his father’s auto repair shop near Mission and Silver. “Everyone was Italian,” said Giusto of his childhood at the Excelsior in the 1950s. “All the boys in the neighborhood were part of the club.”

Giusto also remembers sleeping in the dining room as a kid because his whole family shared a house with one bathroom and two bedrooms.

In the 1960s when Clima was 8, her family left the Excelsior and her father began commuting from the peninsula to run the restaurant. Clima didn’t want to move too far from her parents when she was growing up, so she’s now commuting to work at the IASC.

Although Giusto recently returned to the Excelsior area, he also went away for 34 years, commuting from Sonoma six days a week to run the auto repair shop.

“We ended up there [Sonoma] because we could get a bigger house and it was right next to the schools, ”said Giusto. “Back then the schools in San Francisco were actually pretty tough.”

Clima and Giusto weren’t the only Italian Americans to leave the Excelsior. Although the area remains a hotspot for immigrants (around half of Excelsior’s residents are originally from other countries), most immigrants are not Italians. Today the neighborhood is mostly Asian and Latin American.

Giusto sees many reasons for the Italian-American exodus from the Excelsior, which he both witnessed and later joined.

“People made money back then … they were wealthy. And they moved to San Mateo, they moved to Millbrae for a little better weather. Because we have a lot of fog here. You only drive 5 miles and you’re in the sun … and you’ve moved to get a bigger home to accommodate your family. People had three or four children and had the money to buy another house. … It went well in the 50s and 60s. “

When I sat down with Clima, she listed one local store after another that was not Italian or that no longer existed. The bakery in the Royal Baking Company building is no longer Italian-owned. The funeral home Valente, Marini, Perata & Co. is being demolished to make room for affordable housing. Cotter’s Corner is now another bar called Rocks Den.

Clima’s father sold Joe’s Fish Grotto in 2006. Today it is a sushi restaurant, Amami Sushi Bistro. And Giusto closed his car shop in 2019. He rents the building’s parking lot to the cannabis shop across the street.

Today the IASC has about 180 members spread across the Bay Area, including Giusto’s three sons. Although non-Italian men can now become members, they cannot hold office and they do not have a share in the building. In practice, the IASC remains a club for Italian-American men, with a building in a neighborhood that has been all but abandoned by Italian Americans.

Founded in 1917, the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club in North Beach has more than 650 members and a nonprofit foundation that organizes community festivals, Italian classes, and events. This year the 100th annual Statuto Race of the North Beach Club takes place.

With so few club members still living at the Excelsior or even in town, Clima is planning most of the IASC’s events and is not packing the calendar. Some events are open to both members and the public. A crab feed that happened before the pandemic attracted around 300 people. A sausage and polenta night is planned for Friday, to which 20 answers have been given so far. Clima expects more after the club meets this week.

She rents the halls and ballroom, mainly to Quinceaneras and churches, to cover the operating costs of the IASC, and runs the restaurant, which is open to the public. Clima is not only the general manager of the club, but also the head chef of the restaurant.

At 6 p.m. two people came into the club and strolled up to the bar. Clima knew her two drinks orders by heart: Martinis, Ketel 1 and Smirnoff. The three started laughing and joking. I packed my things and stepped out into a soupy mist. I walked down quiet Mission Street and passed the Central Drug Store, one of the few remaining Italian stores in the area. A few blocks down where Joe’s Fish Grotto used to be, I found Amami Sushi Bistro. And I wondered what the Excelsior will be in another hundred years and what shadows will be left of today.

It’s Excelsior month at SFGATE. We’ll be delving deep into the neighborhood throughout September as part of a series that highlights a different corner of San Francisco each month this year.

November 7, 2021 10:00 am

Americans have had a period of exceptional mobility – and the top city Americans are moving to is Sarasota, Florida.

The high cost of living and real estate prices in large coastal cities like New York and San Francisco are part of the reason Americans move. Low mortgage rates have also made homes more affordable, and the COVID-19 pandemic has allowed people who work from home to move from cities where their businesses have offices to almost anywhere in the country. (These are the best cities to live and work from home in 2021.)

A by-product of this increased mobility is that home prices have skyrocketed in some modest (by population) states and cities. The people of Idaho, Oregon, Tennessee, and South Carolina along with a few cities have huddled within their borders. The 2021 census data will likely show more than the US average population growth in these states and cities.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed a study by the major Mayflower moving company, entitled “Find home.” Mayflower’s data from locations where the company supported a total of 800 or more moves showed the locations – states and cities – with the most inbound moves between July 2019 and July 2021.

The states with the most inbound moves were Idaho, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida.

In addition to migration data, a survey was conducted between September 13 and September 23, 2021 that claims to reflect the US population by gender, generation, and census by region.

The survey found that “nearly three-quarters of Americans (74%) feel they have a hometown”. However, the meaning of “hometown” is not the same among respondents: “58% consider their hometown to be the place they come from, while 42% consider their hometown to be the place where they currently live.”

Whether people are moving to or from their new hometown or not, the city with the most inbound moves was Sarasota, Florida, where 76.9% of all moves were recorded. It was followed by Wilmington, North Carolina; Fort Myers, Florida; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Boise, Idaho. Find out if these cities are some of the best cities to live in.
