According to The National Fire Protection Association, the leading cause of fireplace fires was a failure to clean, mainly creosote from solid-fuelled heating equipment, primarily chimneys. Creosote buildup is a major cause of chimney fires, as it can release toxic gases and is highly flammable.

Remove the buildup, which is soot and creosote, from your fireplace. That’s the dark residue that coats the inside of the firebox and interior walls and reaches up into the lining of the chimney. Removing this buildup every season or whenever the residue appears thick is essential.

If you have a wood-burning fireplace, you must keep the firebox (the area where you build a fire) clean. After each use, dispose of the remaining ash. Make sure the fire has died and that the ash is cold.

I always recommend an annual inspection by a professional. A certified chimney sweep can inspect your fireplace and has the right tools to ensure optimal performance. They will pick up on significant issues such as cracks in the chimney lining or a damaged chimney cap. Inspecting your fireplace can also tell you if the damper is sealing correctly.

A cracked flue is very dangerous for a couple of reasons. First, it allows heat and smoke to travel to other areas in the home. That’s not safe and it can also cause soot to build up quicker.

Your fireplace’s ash pit needs to be checked. You might have a leak if the ashes seem soggy and hard to remove. If that’s the case, fix it sooner rather than later. I recommend doing this once every other year.

Your chimney gets exposed to rain, snow, freezing, and thawing. Bricks from your chimney can fall and injure people or create holes in your roof if neglected and not properly maintained. Animals love building nests in chimneys, which can block the flue, create improper venting, and lead to dangerous fumes being forced back inside your home. Ensure a working smoke and carbon monoxide detector is installed in the same room as the wood-burning or gas appliance. Remember to test your detectors every month.

It’s essential to inspect your chimney from the ground visually. Look for crumbling, loose or missing mortar. Is your chimney leaning? If you spot signs of damage on the outside of your chimney, I can guarantee that the inside is even worse.

An ordinary masonry chimney is built of bricks and mortar with a liner made of metal or terra cotta. Unfortunately, over time water can penetrate the brick and cause it to break down and wick to the inside of the chimney. The freezing and thawing cycles can cause damage to the brick, compromising the structure of the chimney and making it unsafe.

Your chimney’s windward side (the one getting the most exposure to Mother Nature), may look worse than the other sides. Look for chipping mortar. If it’s a few holes here and there, repointing or tuck-pointing is a good way to get your chimney looking good again. This involves chipping out the loose mortar and refilling the spaces between the bricks with new mortar. However, if your chimney is in terrible shape, it may need to be rebuilt entirely and this should be done by a licensed brick and stone mason.

Every year I hear about tragic house fires caused by fireplaces and chimneys. Chimney fires can reach over 1,000 degrees Celsius. That is hot enough to destroy the chimney liner and burn your house. So I will say it again, it’s essential to get your chimney professionally inspected annually, primarily if you use your fireplace frequently. Failure to regularly inspect, repair, and clean a chimney can cause it to malfunction and puts your family at risk.

Your annual home maintenance checklist should include your wood-burning fireplace. Have your chimney inspected by a certified specialist to ensure your wood-burning system is in good operating order, the installation complies with building requirements, and it is safe to use.

Illuminate SF has grown since its inception from six to 62 temporary and permanent eco-friendly light art installations created by a diverse array of acclaimed international and local artists, including Olaf Eliasson, Jenny Holzer, Daniel Libeskind, Jorge Pardo and Jerry van Eyck, along with San Francisco Bay-based Jim Campbell, Johanna Grawunder, Dorka Keehn other Brian Goggins.

And in keeping with San Francisco’s ethos of inclusivity and accessibility, nearly 80% of the light art installations are free for visitors and residents to enjoy.”

“We are thrilled to be the presenting sponsor for this year’s Illuminate SF and to showcase our majestic wind baffles that light The Parks at 5 M,” said Christie Donnelly, Director of Development for Brookfield Properties. “The Illuminate SF lighted art tour starts at 5 M and is quintessentially san franciscouniting community through arts, culture and experience.”

Spectacular New Additions to the Illuminate SF Festival of Light
The Wind-Baffles: The iconic wind baffle structures that anchor The Parks at 5 Ma new, vibrant community connected to the surrounding fabric of San Francisco’s SOMA District by a cohesive network of public spaces, are the brainchild of Jerry van Eyck, founder of !melk, an award-winning urban design and landscape architecture firm. Built to mitigate wind, the baffles or “wind breakers” are artfully illuminated from the outside and complemented with a soft glow that radiates through the perforations in the upper zones. Though made from steel, a material associated with heaviness and industry, the baffles are often referred to as “flowers” for their stem and leaf-like design elements. Come nightfall they transform into breathtaking sculptures and suddenly seem to float.

Helical Trace: A permanent installation inside the new LUMA Hotel in Mission Bay, Helical Trace is local artist Jim Campbell’s latest contribution to San Francisco’s Light Art Trail. The dynamic light installation can be seen from the street through the lobby’s floor-to-ceiling three-story windows. The prolific artist who installed Day for Night atop the Salesforce Tower created this striking installation that looks different from every angle and uses the reflection of the windows to amplify its movement. At a distance, the helix form gives the illusion of water across light. The figures within climb an infinite stretch of waterfall, allowing Campbell to create delight out of physical struggle.

Franchise Freedom: Immersive Arts Alliance will bring the acclaimed aerial light performance Franchise Freedom to san francisco for five nights beginning Jan 12. Located in the Union Square/Market Street Station, the immersive installation is comprised of over 500 translucent 10 x 10-inch light panels, each containing an array of color LEDs. The panels are suspended along the entire length of the concourse level’s ceiling, spanning nearly 670 feet. Installed in a diamond-shaped pattern, the light panels are computer programmed to slowly change color and display simple patterns, creating a kaleidoscopic experience.

Untitled: Along the Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit (VN-BRT) Geary Street Station’s north and southbound boarding platforms, Jorge Pardos lighting sculpture brings a pop of whimsical light and color. Hung from the ceiling, this intricate neon artwork (featuring the word “peace” in Farsi “صلح”) explores the cultural taboos that reflect on gender and political authority through Talepasand’s lens as an Iranian-American woman.

Similarly, Agha’s Teardrop (after Robert Irvin) interweaves delicate, traditional Islamic decorative geometric patterns and architecture with modern materials.
San Francisco Mayor London Breed pledged Wednesday to confront the city’s most pressing issues — including homelessness, public safety, police reform and a COVID-battered economy — during her annual state of the city address, the first she has delivered in-person to a crowd since the pandemic began.

She vowed to add more police officers while continuing to pursue reform in use-of-force issues, to continue her efforts to address drug dealing, mental illness and homelessness on the streets of the tenderloin and to clear the way for more housing construction.

Breed, who is halfway through her first full term, touted her administration’s progress on housing and job creation but acknowledged the city still faces significant challenges. In a year in which discontented voters brought an unprecedented two recalls to the ballot, residents remain deeply divided over how to best solve the city’s biggest problems.

“We cannot sugarcoat it,” Breed told city leaders and employees at the Mission Rock residential and commercial development under construction near Oracle Park. “We have work to do. Our recovery will not be quick, or easy. But it is coming. San Francisco is coming back.”

Breed has become one of the most watched big city mayors in America. Over the last two years, she went from being praised nationally for her handling of the pandemic to being questioned by some over her response to the city’s struggling tenderloin neighborhood and its street conditions.

The mayor gave her speech as San Francisco emerges from yet another COVID-19 surge and on the day the city announced it would lift its vaccination mandate for businesses. She emphasized the city’s response to the pandemic, not just in health outcomes, but changes to the city’s landscape such as allowing outdoor dining and closing roads including JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park to car traffic.

But she acknowledged San Francisco is still struggling in its recovery, with emptier-than-usual office buildings, vacant storefronts and recovering small businesses. Breed has been trying to lure back tourists, conventions and remote workers downtown while battling perceptions that the city isn’t safe, with stories about viral shoplifting and the drug overdose crisis grabbing headlines.

Breed didn’t shy from confronting some of the city’s most divisive issues in Wednesday’s speech.

The mayor started her talk with a recent political win — the landslide recall of three school board members. Breed, who endorsed the recall, is now poised to appoint three new members, potentially tipping the board in a more moderate direction. She argued the recall underscored that public officials should deliver on the essentials, instead of getting distracted by big ideas. She and others who supported the recall criticized the school board members for renaming 44 schools during the pandemic and being slow to reopen classrooms while vulnerable children struggled with online learning.

Breed stressed that the school district’s focus should be on helping families and children who’ve suffered.

Breed also dove into her own perspectives on policing and crime, which have become huge issues for city residents.

Outrage over crime fueled the upcoming June recall vote on progressive District Attorney Chesa Boudin, whose policies critics view as too lenient. Data shows that crime in San Francisco is complicated. During the pandemic, some reported crimes including robberies and larceny thefts went down from previous years, while homicides, burglaries and motor vehicle thefts increased since 2019.

Breed hasn’t yet stated her position on Boudin’s recall, but has previously said “I am not necessarily on the same page with a number of things that he’s doing.”

In her speech, Breed mentioned Asian seniors fearful of leaving their homes, Tenderloin families terrorized by drug dealers and Bayview families dealing with gun violence.

“These are complicated problems, with twisted roots that reach well below surface-level solutions,” she said. “But, again, we have the tools to deliver both the basics and the big ideas.” First, she said, “we need law enforcement.”

Breed directly addressed to her critics who oppose an increase in policing.

“And to those who say we don’t need the police — again, I say, listen to the residents. They are speaking louder than ever,” she said. “No, not for a return to the past, like when I was growing up, and there was often a deep mistrust between the community and the police. Even then, we needed the police. We needed them to cease the gunfire. We needed them to protect victims of violence. We just needed them to help us live our lives—not undermine us in our community.”

Breed gained national attention in December when she pledged to step up policing against drug dealers — and users who refused services — as part of her state of emergency to clean up and reduce overdose deaths in the Tenderloin neighborhood. She’s reiterated that she’s open to police getting involved in clearing the Tenderloin’s streets, but data earlier this month showed arrests for drug crimes hadn’t increased since the emergency began.

One issue that’s hamstrung that effort is police staffing shortages, which Breed highlighted Wednesday. San Francisco was 540 officers short of a recommended staffing level as of early March, with 1,636 officers.

Breed also emphasized alternatives in some situations are needed. She mentioned the city’s street crisis response teams, started last year to send mental health professionals to calls of people in mental crisis, and community ambassadors.

Breed also said police were working on reform, which was also critical. Data shows police use of force has decreased in recent years, but Black residents are still between 9.5 to 17 times far more likely to have used force upon them than white residents. Police are completing reform recommendations from the state and federal governments.

Breed also touted her investment in the Black community to address historical inequities, highlighting the Dream Keeper Initiative she created with Board of Supervisors President Shamann Walton to 2020 to pour $60 million annually into Black-led community organizations.

“These are programs that recognize the root causes of crime are driven by poverty. By decades of disinvestment and systemic racism. These are programs that will heal our communities with housing, mental health, education, job training and economic empowerment,” she said. “Let’s be the national model: For reform, for alternatives and for safety.”

While the mayor dove into policing, she didn’t dwell too much in her speech on her push in the tenderloin and the drug crisis that prompted it. Overdoses killed nearly twice as many people in San Francisco as COVID-19 over the past two years. Close to two people a day die of overdoses in the city.

She acknowledged her emergency has stoked debate, but said “the main takeaway is that we can’t continue to accept things as they were.”

“I’m done arguing if it’s okay for people to remain on the streets when we have a place for them to go. Because it’s not. It just isn’t,” she continued. “And to be honest, there are some folks who cannot — or will not — do what’s safe for themselves and for others, so we have to be honest about the need to deal with those struggling with mental illness and we need to make serious changes to our state laws.”

She said she’s been meeting with state leaders to talk about mental health laws — potentially a reference to the ongoing debate about conservatorship, mandated treatment for someone who is a danger to themselves or others.

In 2019, a report found 4,000 people who were homeless and struggling with mental illness and substance use disorder. The city has made slow progress to increase the number of treatment beds — with only 89 of the 400 planned added so far — and to make the care system more cohesive and easier to navigate.

Breed focused more on another challenge prevalent in the Tenderloin: homelessness.

The mayor has highlighted the city is pouring $1 billion into tackling homelessness over the next two years. Most of that money comes from a voter-approved tax that breed didn’t support in 2018.

Her administration will spend some of the funds to reach her goal of creating 1,500 new permanent supportive housing units by June. Breed said the city is on track to exceed by 70% that goal of creating subsidized housing with services for formerly homeless people.

But the city struggles with quickly filling available units, with 10% — or around 850 units — vacant this week, the spokeswoman said. That number covers units getting repaired and those ready for referral, including some where a tenant is already scheduled to move in.

The city is also working to add new shelter beds and reopen beds still shuttered during the pandemic to get to 2,100 short-term shelter beds by July.

Despite the progress, between permanent and temporary housing, there simply isn’t enough for the city’s homeless population. In 2019, a count found around 8,000 unhoused people, but the health department recently estimated 18,000 people citywide are experiencing homelessness.

SAN FRANCISCO – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Sept. December 2021–

Thumbtack, the modern home management platform, released its first home care price index today. The Home Care Price Index leverages data on basic maintenance needs and provides insights into the annual cost of home ownership across the country and in the top 40 US cities.

This press release contains multimedia. View the full press release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20211209005269/en/

In the last 12 months, the average maintenance costs for a single-family home have risen by 9.3 percent, partly due to a lack of labor and materials. At the same time, the demand for home services is increasing: 30 percent of homeowners surveyed say they will spend more than US $ 10,000 on home projects in the next 12 months. 1

“Our houses are gaining both in value and in importance in our lives. As costs rise, keeping track of home care is a smart investment – saving money, adding value and providing homeowners with peace of mind, “said Marco Zappacosta, Co-Founder and CEO of Thumbtack. “We created the Home Care Price Index to provide transparency while also helping homeowners find a great professional at the right price for all of their home needs.”

Average cost of home care

According to Thumbtack’s Home Care Price Index, the average annual cost of maintaining a single family home is $ 4,886 – an increase of about $ 450 per household compared to 2020. That increase appears to be slowing in the fourth quarter of 2021, as in comparison, costs rose 0.4 percentage points lower than in the previous quarter.

The Home Care Price Index takes into account various projects homeowners must tackle each year – including HVAC maintenance, gutter cleaning, roof maintenance, and more – to avoid costly repairs and unnecessary emergencies. Among these projects, the highest price peaks are in the maintenance of sprinkler and irrigation systems (+28.8 percent), equipment maintenance (+19.7 percent) and sewer and ventilation cleaning (+19.5 percent).

In addition, the rising costs of home care are affecting not only single-family homes, but also row houses and apartments. Over the past 12 months, the average cost of a townhouse has increased 8.6 percent to $ 1,922 – an increase of about $ 150 since 2020 (excluding HOA fees). Over the same period, the average cost of an apartment has increased 10 percent to $ 682 – an increase of $ 62 from 2020.

Regional inflation trends

Many areas across the country saw costs rise over the past year due to “major reshuffle”, labor and supply shortages, and a new focus on minimizing house wear and tear during the pandemic. These trends vary widely at the local level:

Florida and the “Sun Belt” see spikes: As homeowners, and especially families, are looking for warmer (and milder) weather, Florida cities like West Palm Beach (+18.4 percent), Orlando (+16.6 percent) and Miami ( +14.4.) Percent) as well as cities along the “sun belt” such as Charlotte (+18 percent), Houston (+15.8 percent), San Antonio (+13.8 percent), San Diego (+13.7 percent ), Austin (+12.6 percent), Atlanta (+10.8 percent) and Greenville-Asheville (+10.8 percent) all recorded increases.

Hot markets are seeing rising costs: In addition, cities in which the real estate market has been booming since the beginning of the pandemic, such as Portland (+33.9 percent), Las Vegas (+17.6 percent), Seattle (+16.3 percent), Salt Lake City (+12.8 percent), New York (+12.1 percent) and Denver (+10.5 percent) also recorded stronger increases.

Cooler markets weaken: Cities like Baltimore (-1.9 percent), Columbus (+0.9 percent), Boston (+2.1 percent), Philadelphia (+2.4 percent), Washington DC (+2, 5 percent), San Francisco (+3 percent), Nashville (+3.1 percent), Milwaukee (+4.3 percent), Chicago (+4.4 percent) and Dallas-Ft. Worth (+5.2 percent) are well below the national average or show slower growth.

“People in different cities will make different decisions. But what is clear is that you can postpone buying a new couch – but once you have moved to a warmer climate, you cannot postpone servicing or repairing your air conditioning, sprinklers and other high-traffic areas, “added David Steckel. Home Expert at Thumbtack. “Proactive home care saves homeowners thousands of dollars in repairs and helps arrange replacement appointments. For example, HVAC maintenance costs $ 390 each year compared to replacing a system, which can cost up to $ 12,500. “

Switch to continuous care

Home has become even more important in people’s lives over the past two years. It is therefore more important than ever to internalize the idea of continuous maintenance – not just repairing things when they break, but also preventive maintenance. As the partner of choice, Thumbtack helps homeowners take care of their home from start to finish and find the right professional at the right time for their home’s unique needs with no hassle.

(CBS) – CBS presents the 23rd Annual A Home For The Holidays At The Grove, featuring uplifting stories of foster adoption and awareness raising on this important social issue, which will air on Sunday, December 5th at 9:30 am-10:30pm, ET / will. 9:00 pm – 10:00 pm, PT on CBS and available with Paramount + for live and on-demand streaming.

Filmed at the famous Grove retail, dining and entertainment center in Los Angeles, the special will enrich the inspiring stories of several American families with performances by extraordinary artists such as Justin Bieber, Kane Brown, Alessia Cara and Darren Criss. Additionally, Kane Brown will introduce the Rodriguez family for a special live adoption.

CONTINUE READING: King Tide Flooding on SF Waterfront foreshadows the future norm of climate change

Over the past two decades, the award-winning special has shed light on thousands of American foster children and inspired tens of thousands of adoptions that turned those children into loving “forever families.”

There are currently more than 400,000 foster children in the United States hoping to be “forever home”. Foster children lead difficult lives. Only half have graduated from high school; five percent university graduates; and within four years of aging, 50 percent will become homeless. As this special shows, if these children are given a home and a chance, they can thrive and lead exemplary, even extraordinary, lives.

The stories of this year’s special include:

The Healy family

From the time Celia was 9 months old until she was 12, she lived in nine different houses, so many that she can’t remember the faces and locations. She was constantly abused and often told that she would end up just like her mother, an addicted dropout who got pregnant when she was 15. Trish and Andy Healy are native Australians and have always wanted to adopt an older child. When Celia joined her family, they were shocked at how much she had endured, but inspired by her resilience. Celia felt safe for the first time in her life, knowing that she was part of a loving family. Her grades and confidence soared. Now a freshman at UCLA, she is bright, strong, and on her way to an amazing life.

The Polk family

CONTINUE READING: North Bay Organizations Unite for Holiday Toy Drive

When Christopher was born, he was left in the hospital by his mother, who was struggling with substance abuse. He was adopted and raised by his grandmother. He met his husband Jacari in 2006 and they married in 2011. When it was time for the couple’s adoption, they were paired with Knox, a one-year-old boy who was born while his mother was in prison and was subject to neglect. Because of the similarities with Christopher’s story, the couple knew this was intentional. The Polks are a happy trio now. Knox is a successful 3 year old who loves cycling and soccer. Christopher and Jacari both say the day the adoption was finalized was the best day of their lives.

The Ambrose family

Brian and Heather always wanted a big family. They had three biological daughters, but pregnancy complications in the third led them to adopt. By welcoming a little boy, Carter, they felt like their family was complete. When Carter was 4 years old, they learned that Carter had a biological sister, Linden, 11 months old. The Ambroser were unprepared for another baby, but they opened their home and hearts to this little girl and two years later they cannot imagine life without her.

The Rodriguez family

Marjorie was placed in a foster family as a toddler. When she was five years old, she lived in six different houses where she was neglected and mistreated. Celine and Jerry Rodriguez were told by Marjorie and her heart was with her. They decided that this little girl would complete their family. At first Marjorie was reserved, but they showered her with love and attention, and she grew into a beautiful and well-adjusted girl. They all can’t wait for the adoption to be complete and Marjorie to become part of their eternal family.

The special is presented in collaboration with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and the Children’s Action Network. Wendy’s founder, Dave Thomas, who was adopted, set up the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, which is committed to dramatically increasing child adoption in the North American care system. The Children’s Action Network was founded in 1990 by entertainment industry leaders to harness the power of entertainment media for children.

The Academy’s third annual Legends Awards ceremony was held at the Swedish American Hall last Friday and nearly 200 people came to celebrate and socialize, including Jan Wahl, Gary Virginia, Gareth Gooch, Bill Wilson, and Brian Kent. We cooperate with the dashing Liam Mayclem of television and gastronomic celebrity and Sister Roma, the “most photographed nun in the world” and she is always fun to work with. Paul Miller and Nate Bourg In addition to launching The Academy, you created a group of awards to recognize those who make a difference in the LGBTQ + community. The Exemplar Award was presented by the sparkling Mercedez Munro to the longtime champion of the Asian / Pacific Islander Community Tita Aida. the Diane Jones Solidarity award went to writer, activist and filmmaker Leo Herrerawho accepted by video. The Architect Award was then presented by a talented drag performer Miss Rahni Nothing more to Scott Petersonwho made the powerhouse such a popular SOMA location; his remarks were particularly humble and moving. In between awards, we enjoyed a remarkable variety of musical performances by Russell Deason, Melanie DeMore, and Linda Steinstrasse. Finally, the Legends Archive Award was presented by Terrance Kelly, Director of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir Dr. Tim Seelig, Artistic Director of the SF Gay Men’s Chorus. Tim recently announced his retirement after an exceptional career and particularly significant contributions to this local choir, making him a perfect choice for the evening’s first award. In keeping with previous years, Tim gave one of his favorite conducting sticks, framed by historical photographs and documents, on display at the Academy forever, along with Sister Roma’s headdress and Juanita MORE!‘sneon “Loads of Love”. The awards ended with a hilarious video from Tim and a rousing song by members of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. The guests hiked next to the Academy to an after-party in the Academy with all the award winners, presenters, actors and guests for cocktails and congratulations, as Juanita MORE! made for excellent music.

Two recent events occurred to friends and acquaintances of the deceased Harry Denton and Michael Pagan an opportunity to collect and share great memories. First, Harry’s Bar on Fillmore Street hosted a weekday happy hour party. Since we have never been to this bar and were rather unfamiliar with this forest neck, we went there a little hesitantly, unsure of our reception. Within minutes of arriving, any fear was gone Gregor August offered us a seat and a cosmo and engaged us in a pleasant conversation. The crowd of exuberant guests hummed with amusing stories about their experiences with Harry Denton. At some point it was time to cut the two cakes, both with suggestive and amusing designs, and sing the birthday song. Somehow we were lifted to the front bar with Liam Mayclem with the blessing of the general manager Charles Johnson and we conducted the chant that ended with a toast to this extraordinary San Franciscan.

Then we met some former Sir Francis Drake Hotel staff and other friends and business associates of Michael Pagan at Harris’ Steakhouse. Once again the conversation turned to the man we honored. We loved spending time with Cassandra Cass, Holotta Tymes, and Robert Carstensenwho all played a vital role in the success of Sunday’s a Drag at The Starlight Room, as well as other familiar faces from the many years doing shows at the hotel. We even got the chance to spend a few minutes with Michael’s sister, daughter, and son-in-law. A big thank you to Scott Taylor for a comfortable setting with a bar, delicious food, beautiful flower arrangements and a slide show with photos. Each of these events was not difficult with ceremonies or speeches, but served an important purpose, bringing together people who have been affected by the loss of two very caring people who touched many lives.

We ended our weekend with the celebration of the Absolute Empress Marlenas Birthday with many of her friends in Patricia’s Green, the small park in the Hayes Valley, directly opposite the legendary Marlena’s Bar. Marlena shone when she received admirers from near and far, courtly and otherwise, when cake was cut and champagne flowed. We talked to emperors John Carrillo, Jacque Michaels, JP Soto, and Bill Bulkley, Empresses Alexis miranda and Emma Peel, Kippy Marks, Carlos Medal, Patrick Noonan, Aldy Albanes-Pearman, Bobby Sleker, Ehra Amaya, Jouke Lanning, and much more. This was an informal celebration for a wonderful community icon. As this pandemic continues to melt, we look forward to many more such events, bringing people back together personally with caution but with boundless joy.

Steady wins the race.

Will Zalatoris, the 23-year-old native of San Francisco, put in an expert performance at the TPC Colorado Championship in Heron Lakes last weekend. Zalatoris shot 67-67-70-69 during the four-day event to finish under at 15 and take his first career win.

Photo courtesy of PGA Media – Will Zalatoris lifts the 2020 TPC Colorado Championship trophy on Saturday afternoon.

“Finally,” said a visibly pleased Zalatoris in front of the assembled media after he had earned the victory. “It’s probably been four years since I won a golf tournament. It still hasn’t arrived. “

It wasn’t quite four years, but it was close. Zalatoris’ last win in any type of tournament came in 2017 when he took first place as a senior at Wake Forest at Duke University’s Rod Myers Invitational. When he started this week, Zalatoris had come this close as he tied sixth, third and fourth in his last three tournaments.

“Just hold on to the finish and trust it and get the job done day in and day out and it’s nice to see it finally pay off … it’s pretty nice,” Zalatoris said. “I think, to be honest, just a little consolation in the finals. I followed the last two tournaments from behind. “

Zalatoris’s performance was barely enough on Saturday’s final lap to hold off Chase Johnson, who set a course record of 63 to runner-up.

Johnson excelled in the final round on Saturday, carding 10 birdies over 18 holes, shooting 31-32 to get a 14-under and going into the clubhouse with part of the lead.

“It was fun, I came out today just thinking, ‘It’s kind of all or nothing for my position here,’ and I knew I could do it if I had a hot start to what I really call the top nine I could give myself a chance with the second nine, ”said Johnson on Saturday afternoon. “I just tried to be as patient as possible because you can’t force anything here.”

The $ 54,000 prize for second place secures Johnson, who entered the week on conditional status, his Korn Ferry Tour card for the remainder of the season. “We’re all trying to do that, to put ourselves in the competition, but actually to go to the last round and place a 63 to give us a chance, that’s a huge confidence boost.”

As great as Johnson was, Zalatoris was unfazed and kept playing his game. A birdie on the characteristic par-3 hole 16 brought him one shot ahead of Johnson.

Two par fours remained. A textbook four against 17 gave Zalatoris the leeway to only have to reach par 18 to avoid a playoff with Johnson. Zalatoris missed the fairway from the tee and found himself 212 yards out in the rough. He explained after the round that the goal was only to get to 40 feet, knowing that the one spot he couldn’t miss was on the right, where there was a deep bunker.

After hitting the approach shot, Zalatoris stated, “I told my caddy, ‘this is gone’ very stressful for a hassle-free exit.”

His birdie putt slipped past the top of the cup by a hair. A straight tripod remained and Zalatoris’s putt hit the cup dead center to claim victory.

The win and associated check for $ 108,000 for first place was enough to propel Zalatoris to the top of the Korn Ferry Tour money list for the season. In normal times, winning the TPC Colorado along with his three other top 5 finishes in Zalatori’s season would almost certainly secure a top 25 spot that would earn him his PGA Tour card for the 2021 season. But these are far from common times as a result of the devastation caused by COVID-19 and the Korn Ferry Tour which have chosen to forego table-based promotions this season.

Even so, given that win and strong and steady play on the Korn Ferry Tour this year, Zalatoris’ lifelong goal of playing the PGA Tour is much closer. The cherry on top? This fall, Zalatoris secured a place for the US Open in the traditional Winged Foot.

    August 13, 2021

Over 3,500 backpacks and 5,000 planners and activity books have been distributed to children and teenagers living in public and affordable accommodations across San Francisco

San Francisco, California – Today Mayor of London N. Breed celebrated the successful completion of the city’s annual school backpack competition. In the past two weeks, more than 3,500 backpacks of school supplies have been distributed to children and teenagers in the public and affordable neighborhoods of San Francisco to help them prepare for the 2021-2022 school year.

As part of the city’s efforts to ensure a safe return to face-to-face learning, the Department of Public Health (DPH) dispatched mobile vaccination teams to many of the giveaway events to provide COVID-19 vaccines to attendees 12 and older. The events also provided food, entertainment, and resources related to health, wellness, employment, family support, and other social services in the neighborhood.

“This year’s competition is particularly exciting as our students are returning to the classroom after a year of distance learning,” said Mayor Breed. “The pandemic has hit us all hard, but nobody has suffered more than our youth. These backpack business gifts provide our students with the materials they need for the new school year and are a way of relieving our families financially. ” I would like to thank all departments in the city and our community partners for their hard work to ensure that our students are well prepared for the coming school year. “

In addition, the Mayor’s Office has partnered with the Department of Children, Youth and their Families (DCYF) and the San Francisco Human Rights Commission (HRC) to create more than 5,000 planners and activity books with enriching tools and activities for personal and educational development to create and distribute. Exercises and prompts.

“As the children, adolescents and young people of our city prepare to return to their classrooms and school communities, we can feel their joy in returning to school and being personal. The 2021-2022 academic calendar will be the third.” School year that is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, “said Maria Su, Executive Director, Department of Children, Youth and their Families.” It has been a long and challenging journey, but we are determined to take our students and families on to support her path in the coming year. We believe in her brilliance and resilience. San Francisco children, enlighten your light, we see you. “

“It was a great pleasure to be part of this distribution to celebrate the strength, resilience and potential of our young people. Many of the youth loved the tools to help them pursue their goals and document their creativity, ”said Sheryl Davis, executive director of the San Francisco Commission on Human Rights.

The Mayor’s Office, the San Francisco Housing Authority (SFHA) and HOPE SF have teamed up with volunteers through the nonprofit TogetherSF to pack and distribute the backpacks and other educational materials to each location.

“TogetherSF is grateful to our volunteer community for always being committed to helping,” said Kanishka Cheng, Executive Director of TogetherSF. “They quickly covered the need to pack and distribute backpacks – and had a great time doing it! We are honored to be part of the Mayor’s Backpack competition and look forward to continuing to support our community partners. “

“The City and County of San Francisco Housing Authority is honored to have helped the City family organize, deliver, and distribute backpacks to our families. Receiving a new backpack and school supplies is an exciting part of preparing for the upcoming school year and years to come as our students successfully navigate each stage of their educational journey, “said Tonia Lediju, chief executive officer of the San Francisco Housing Authority.

Other departments in the city that provided resources at the backpack raffle events were the Mayor’s Office for Housing and Community Development (MOHCD), the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department (RPD), and the San Francisco Human Services Agency (HSA).

San Francisco is home to thousands of high school students in need of financial assistance both in and out of the classroom. Providing over 3,500 backpacks of school supplies tailored to each student’s class meets these needs while connecting students and their families with resources that can help support academic success throughout the year.

Mayor Breed is committed to ensuring all students have access to quality education as San Francisco emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Breed worked closely with the city’s departments throughout the pandemic to provide personal support for distance learning and additional enrichment programs, prioritizing children and teens with the greatest need. Additionally, earlier this year, Mayor Breed signed the city’s budget for fiscal years 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, which includes $ 15 million, to aid student learning loss and educational recreation for San Francisco’s children and youth fight.
