ANTIOCH (KPIX) — Families demonstrated in front of the Antioch Police Department on Saturday to demand transparency and accountability related to in-custody deaths.

This came as the FBI and the Contra Costa County District Attorney announced last month it had launched an investigation into multiple Pittsburg and Antioch police officers.

READ MORE: Two Dead After Truck Careens Off Cliff Into Ocean At Pescadero State Beach

“We’ve joined the club that nobody wants to be a member of,” said Robert Collins, stepfather of Angelo Quinto, who died in police custody on December 23, 2020.

About 30 people gathered to listen and share stories of alleged police brutality. Some families accused Antioch police of killing their loved ones.

“When Angelo was killed, there were two crimes committed that night. One was his actual death. And the second one was the cover up,” said Collins.

Quinto’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Antioch. They claimed an officer put his knee on the 30-year-old man’s neck for almost five minutes, cutting off his oxygen.

“This process of grief that’s always going to be prolonged because we don’t have any sense of closure,” said Quinto’s sister, Bella Quinto Collins.

The family said it trusted the police. That was why they called the police for help when Quinto was dealing with mental illness.

READ MORE: Pelosi Visits Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv

“Such a life-changing moment that you will never forget that,” cried Quinto’s mother, Cassandra Quinto-Collins.

Some demonstrators are even asking for the ouster of the Contra Costa County Sheriff David Livingston.

“We are calling for Sheriff Livingston to resign in light of his irresponsible and dangerous remarks made following the sentencing of Andrew Hall. If he doesn’t resign, we’re calling on the Board of Supervisors to at least publicly censor him. And if neither of those happens, we’re calling on the public to vote him out this June,” said Veronica Benjamin, co-founder of police watchdog group Conscious Contra Costa.

The FBI and the Contra Costa County district attorney are investigating multiple Pittsburg and Antioch police officers. Pittsburg police said three officers are on paid leave during the investigation.

But Antioch has so far to decline to say how many of its officers are under investigator. The DA’s office and the FBI declined to say what the investigation was about or answer any questions.

Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe said he fought for police reform and will work with the new interim police chief to bring change to the department.

MORE NEWS: Pair of Earthquakes Rattle Northern Sonoma County

“We are moving in advancing police reform and I know change doesn’t happen overnight. And I know some people are frustrated,” said Mayor Thorpe.

ANTIOCH (CBS SF) – A family dog wounded while defending its home against a fleeing armed suspect of a stolen car died of its injuries late Monday, according to the Antioch Friends of Animal Services.

In a Facebook post, the Animal Services Organization shared the sad news that Oso had passed away.

CONTINUE READING: Pair of solid redwood crushed, leaving 5 kids

“We have very sad news about Oso, the innocent 8-year-old German Shepherd who was shot in the neck on Saturday afternoon in his garden by an escaping suspect involved in a police chase in Antioch,” the agency said With. “We learned tonight that Oso’s condition has worsened. His internal injuries were more severe than they could initially see after his emergency surgery: the bullet ricocheted off his spine and also caused severe nerve damage. Oso crossed the Rainbow Bridge with love. “

One suspect has meanwhile been in custody and a second remained free on Tuesday after they shot a passing vehicle and wounded Oso while escaping from Antioch and Oakley police on Saturday night.

Antioch police said a chase by Oakley police of a stolen car suspect leaked into downtown Antioch around 6:30 p.m.

In the city center, police said, someone fired at least one lap in the stolen vehicle and hit the vehicle of a driver driving by. Fortunately, this driver was not injured.

A short time later, the stolen vehicle crashed into a parked car, and the driver and passenger fled while officers used a sheriff’s helicopter to set up a search area in the area.

The driver of the vehicle was caught a few blocks later and arrested without incident.

The second occupant of the vehicle fled on foot to a nearby courtyard on 3rd W. St. and was apparently armed with a pistol.

While jumping into a backyard, he was approached by Oso and shot him while the dog was defending his home in a backyard confrontation. The suspect then tried to gain entry to the house and eventually shot out the back sliding glass door while the homeowner and his 14-year-old son were in the living room.

They fled the front window of the house and escaped unharmed, while the suspect then ran upstairs and grabbed vehicle keys and green mechanic overalls before flinging from yard to yard on foot.

A Concord Police K9 team helped find the outstanding suspect but couldn’t find him.

Investigators said the general suspect was a white or Spanish man in his early 20s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and thin. He may be wearing a green mechanical overall dress and was last seen in the West Third St. and K St. area.
