Rachel Balkovec becomes the first female manager in minor league baseball after the New York Yankees named her to one of their affiliated teams.

She will lead the Tampa Tarpons, who play at Low-A level, one of the lower tiers of the minor leagues.

Balkovec, 34, had served as a hitting coach for the Yankees’ rookie-level Florida Complex League team.

She was the first woman to become a full-time batting coach in a Major League Baseball (MLB) organization.

2020, Alyssa Naken became the first female trainer in the major leagues with the San Francisco Giants.

“I’m not the first woman to have a position in baseball, but I know this is a little bit different,” Balkovec told MLB.com of being called to her previous role.

“I’m a product of the women who came before me in the sport. If anyone thinks I’m a trailblazer, great because hopefully that creates an opportunity to believe that this is possible [others].”

In minor league baseball, players typically take several years to advance through the system, often starting out in rookie or low-A leagues after being signed or drafted before progressing to high-A, AA, and eventually to AAA, the final level, advance to reach the majors.

Joe Freitas has been synonymous with South San Francisco Colt baseball for nearly half a century.

But for the first time since he started coaching his first team in 1977 at the age of 18, this season marked the first time a South San Francisco Colt team was not led by Freitas.

After the Peninsula Colt League, like the entire California youth baseball, was closed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Freitas decided to step down from the coaching office in 2021. While still holding the title of President and Business Manager of the Peninsula Colt League, Freitas passed the reins of his South City Indians team to Raul Callero.

“I’m still determined to lead the South City program up here and continue to be involved in the Peninsula Colt League,” said Freitas. “My philosophy was to build the program – and keep the kids in South City, give them a place to play and keep them out of trouble and keep them going – keep the program going.”

Freitas trained his final game under the South City PAL Colt Baseball banner in the 2019 Super Region tournament and led the team to the championship game before falling against eventual national champions Los Gatos Legends.

“That was a good year,” said Freitas. “In the end we had a really good year. We made it to the finals in the Super Region in San Jose. “

Freitas was one of the founders of the Peninsula Colt League, along with Wally Souza in San Mateo and Mike Palmer in San Bruno. Palmer stepped down as president of the Peninsula Colt League in 2019.

“It was just about time,” said Palmer. “I had lasted an awful long time. I thought it was time to pass the torch on to someone else. “

Palmer began coaching San Bruno Youth Baseball in 1976. In the years to come, he would oversee SB Youth and the San Bruno Colt League before bringing them under the same banner of the Peninsula Colt League in the early 2000s. Palmer’s legacy pioneered the transformation of the Peninsula Colt League into a not-for-profit charity.

Freitas said he would like to step down from his advisory role at South San Francisco Colt in the future and has named Raul Callero as his successor even though Callero has not yet accepted the title.

“I would like to resign permanently,” said Freitas. “It’s just about finding the right man to hand it over to.”

Callero comes from a longtime baseball family from South San Francisco. His father Cliff served as an assistant coach under Freitas in 2019. And his grandfather, Mike, was immortalized in 2011 when the baseball diamond in Southwood Park was renamed Mike Callero Field.

South San Francisco Colt played a 12-game plan this season with Raul Callero at the helm, despite not being under the official Colt League banner. The team played independently, as did teams from San Bruno, Pacifica, Millbrae, and Daly City.

“Things were sketchy about the whole COVID thing, but I think we’ll be back next year,” said Palmer.

Freitas really wanted to thank everyone who played for him during his 42 years as a coach. He said he was also grateful to his 22-year-old assistant coach Tom Sutter, his brother-in-law, who died in 2010.

One of the evidence of Freitas’ ability to hold the Colt League together during difficult times came during a night game against the Burlingame Mules in Washington Park in 2017. The appointed referees did not appear for the game. But instead of canceling the game, Freitas made the rounds of Washington Park and asked individual fans if they were ready for the referee.

Freitas eventually found two takers to referee, including a local Bay Area sports radio celebrity Ken Dito, who attended the game to watch his grandson play for Burlingame.

“I have to say that was one of my highlights,” said Freitas.

OAKLAND (BCN) – Oakland City Council leaders posted a letter to the Major League Baseball Friday chief that they were ready to work with the A’s baseball team to prevent them from leaving town.

Oakland recently lost both its National Football League franchise, the Oakland Raider’s, to Las Vegas and the Golden State Warriors to San Francisco.

The letter comes just days after MLB told the Oakland A’s to look for another city to play while chasing an Oakland water park.

“The Oakland City Council is committed to negotiating in good faith about a strong future for the A’s in Oakland, and we invite the A and MLB to do the same by agreeing not to move while the A Completing the stadium in Charles P Howard Terminal) project process, ”the letter begins.

But Las Vegas officials announced on Twitter through Mayor Carolyn Goodman on Wednesday that they have been speaking to the A’s since 2019 and are excited.

City council chairmen are ready to meet with MLB officials and the owners of the A, the letter says, “to move forward thoughtfully.”

The Presidents of the Council said the A leadership recently changed their demands.

“Instead of sending fully completed terms and conditions for review,” the A’s asked the Council to vote on summarizing terms and conditions.

“Council leadership agreed to look into this request and met with A staff and other stakeholders to see how best to move forward,” the letter said.

Council Chairs were in the process of planning a contract vote ahead of their summer break when MLB told the A’s to find a new home while they operate a waterfront ballpark in Oakland.

“This relocation announcement came without giving the council an opportunity to receive and vote on a proposal, and did not even wait for the time required for the vote,” the letter said.

“Since the request to vote was made by August, why should you give permission to investigate the move before the date of the requested vote if the request would have been sincere?” the letter said.

The council presidents asked the MLB to confirm their intentions.

“Can you definitely confirm that if the Council did such a vote on a term sheet on the A’s, you would prohibit any action to seek or continue moving during these next steps?”

Kaplan employees confirmed late Friday afternoon that a vote on the terms of the contract is planned before the break in August.

There is hardly a eucalyptus tree in sight.

Former South San Francisco High School baseball diamond in Orange Memorial Park, Bob Brian Field was known for three things: eucalyptus trees, acorns, and hard-nosed baseball. After the look of the South City Warriors’ new baseball diamond on campus, which opened for full-time training this week, the only one of those things that has a chance to perform is die-hard baseball.

It was 2018 when the ball got rolling on South San Francisco’s new baseball and softball diamonds on campus. When the project was finally completed last September, the teams were unable to access their new facilities due to the coronavirus shutdown. Two weeks ago, the Warriors were finally able to take part in baseball and softball activities in their new fields.

“I never thought I’d see a day when I could leave the sports office and come here for training,” said Matt Schaukowitch, sports director and baseball manager in South San Francisco.

And this week the baseball team started training five days a week, finally ushering in a new era in South City athletics.

“It was basically just sitting there (during the closings),” Schaukowitch said. “We had to do a bit of conditioning from October to December, but we couldn’t use any equipment for that. But now we can use the actual equipment and actually practice. “

South City used to have two lawns that were used for practice fields and were on the north and south sides of the central gym. The softball diamond is now north of the gym. The baseball diamond is past an asphalt on the south side.

It’s a quaint baseball backdrop, with a home plate overlooking the panorama of the South San Francisco Hillside Sign and the field itself, trimmed with natural old-school Kentucky bluegrass.

And the best thing, according to Schaukowitch: No “OP hops” – that is, Orange Park hops, the nickname for infield grounders who would take bad hops if they had tied bad acorns.

“We’re happy to have both (fields) on campus,” said Schaukowitch.

It is a common story in the coronavirus era, children wanting to return to school activities, including athletics. This was a more difficult problem in the South San Francisco Unified School District, as South San Francisco and El Camino high schools were prohibited from resuming track and field practices, even if Peninsula programs from other school districts playing in the same Peninsula Athletic League were allowed to.

South San Francisco parents and students challenged the ban at a special meeting of the SSF school board on Jan. 28. South City soccer player Luis Bernardino was one of many to address before athletics were allowed to resume later that evening after a unanimous vote by the school.

“Not just for our sport, but for other sports … I think it was just as fair for us to get a shot for our season,” said Jaden Francisco, a senior from South City and four-year-old baseball player.

Francisco, like many high school athletes, depends on his senior year to guide his future. The senior said he would like to show off his skills this spring in hopes of playing at the college level. When it looked like there might not even be a baseball season this year, many seniors had to worry if they would ever play the sport again.

“I would say it was very emotional because our season was 50:50 and we didn’t have the answer to play our senior season,” said Francisco. “And for me, I want to keep playing baseball. This is the sport I grew up with. Hopefully, playing my senior season will get me looking at other colleges and I’ll be able to explore my options. ”

Now South City isn’t just back on the baseball diamond enjoying honest practices with bats and balls and all. The Warriors have scheduled the opening day for March 29th, when they hope to debut their new digs with Capuchino at 4 p.m. Necessary personnel will be admitted on site. Spectators are not allowed at the game.

“I would say they were pretty excited,” said Schaukowitch as his team climbed the diamond again. “When we were out here, we weren’t 100 percent sure where the season was going. But the reaction from them, they are just happy to be out here and get some work. “

The warriors had long called the Bob Brian Field off-campus home. Aside from being dodgy arboriculture, the field also had its limitations in terms of baseball operations, as there was no batting cage or bullpen, or a place to store equipment such as practice umbrellas and pitching machines.

“Down in Orange Park you had to use Wild Hill to throw a bullpen,” Schaukowitch said. “So that really limited what you can do.”

The new diamond on campus offers all of these conveniences. And the silver lining from the later start of the season – the Central Coast Section baseball traditionally opens in the last week of February – has given the Warriors over a month to break in their new diamond.

“It’s good for us that we have a little more time here on our new field and see how it plays and all the nooks and crannies that go on,” said Schaukowitch.

Solano County officials approve plans for a mass vaccination center at the Vallejo Exhibition Center
VALLEJO – The Solano County Supervisory Authority on Tuesday approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kaiser Family Foundation and several other partner organizations to operate a COVID-19 vaccination station at the Vallejo county’s fairgrounds. The letter of intent with the KFF, NorthBay Healthcare, Sutter Health Solano, and Touro University would set up the vaccination center for a 90-day term with the option to extend it for subsequent 90-day terms. The clinic administered vaccine doses for up to 12 hours a day, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, depending on the county. Several one-day vaccination clinics have already been held on the exhibition grounds, while the district is promoting the vaccination of residents aged 65 and over, health care workers, food and agriculture workers, and education and childcare workers. Johnson & Johnson vaccine arrives in Santa Clara County
SAN JOSE – After weeks of waiting, the one-off Johnson & Johnson vaccine arrived in Santa Clara County on Monday. The county received 7,500 doses of the new COVID-19 vaccine, according to health officials. Additional doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are expected to arrive in Santa Clara County on March 23. Johnson & Johnson’s highly anticipated COVID-19 vaccine requires only one dose instead of the two required for Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccines. It has been eagerly awaited by local health officials in hopes of increasing vaccination rates across the county, especially in the hardest hit areas, although it is not immediately clear where the vaccine doses are going. BERKELEY — A nonpartisan think tank’s new study found that a reported “mass exodus” from California in 2020 did not happen. Most moves during 2020 happened within the state, the California Policy Lab said Thursday. Departures from the state were consistent with historical patterns but the biggest statewide change was fewer people moving into California, the lab said in a press release. The researchers used a dataset of quarterly credit bureau information called the University of California Consumer Credit Panel to analyze where people from each county moved after the coronavirus pandemic struck a year ago. “While a mass exodus from California clearly didn’t happen in 2020, the pandemic did change some historical patterns, for example, fewer people moved into the state to replace those who left,” author Natalie Holmes said. Woman Arrested For Anti-Asian Attacks In Mountain View
MOUNTAIN VIEW — A woman has been arrested Friday in connection with two crimes targeting Asians in Mountain View last month, amid an ongoing rise in anti-Asian attacks in the Bay Area and across the country. According to police, the suspect is accused of stealing food and clothing from a store on the 200 block of Castro Street in downtown on February 13. Police said the suspect allegedly told the victims she did not have to pay because of their Asian ancestry. The suspect was also linked to a battery at a downtown restaurant around the same time. Police said she allegedly yelled at two patrons, one of whom was Asian, made racist statements and spit at the victim. Following the incidents, the suspect was detained. MARTINEZ — A group of tenant rights activists attempted to disrupt a Contra Costa County virtual courtroom Friday to protest ongoing evictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The group of 70 or so joined in the protest whereby they attempted to gain entry, via Zoom, to Superior Court Judge Rebecca Hardie’s proceedings. By signing on to the teleconferencing platform using hashtags such as #StopEvictionsSaveLives, #CloseTheCourt and #AltoALosDesalojos or using aliases close to the names of real people on the docket rather than their own names in order to confuse the judge, the protesters hoped to gain entry to the court’s 1:30 p.m. video call. The 32-year-old belt had already been slowly incorporated after undergoing surgery in October to remove a bone spur from his right heel.

“He had a virus and was sick,” said Kapler. “I don’t know if there is much more, sorry.”

Belt did light baseball work Wednesday at Scottsdale Stadium before doing more extensive training on Thursday, Kapler said.

“Had a nice chat with Brandon on the field today. He threw, he feels better,” Kapler said on a Zoom call after San Francisco’s 3-1 win over the White Sox.

“We’ve got some work in the cage too. We’re still trying to get Brandon ready for opening day. There’s no big rush right now. We’re still pretty early in March. But today was promising and every day we’re going to add a bit of activity. When. If.” If you’ve been sick for a while, it will take a while to rebuild. “
