Air India has increased Mumbai-San Francisco flights for next summer even before the first flight has taken off.

Air India’s brand-new Mumbai to San Francisco nonstop service begins on December 15 – in two weeks. Even before the route’s first flight, it has expanded its summer schedule from 3 weekly to 4 weekly, suggesting forward bookings are strong. It’ll be one of 12 Air India routes to North America, joined by Mumbai-JFK, which starts soon and will be Air India’s third attempt at it

 Mumbai-SFO flights are up already

In late September, Air India announced Mumbai-San Francisco, its third route to the California city and Star Alliance hub, joining Delhi and Bengaluru.

SIMPLE FLYING VIDEO OF THE DAY

At 8,406 miles (13,529km), Mumbai-San Francisco runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays this winter using three-class, 238-seat B777-200LRs. These have eight first seats, 35 in business, and 195 in economy.

From the end of March, the start of the Northern Hemisphere summer season, it’ll operate on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, still using 777-200LRs. It is scheduled as follows, with all times local:

Mumbai-San Francisco: AI179, 14:30-18:00 same-day arrival (16h block time)

San Francisco-Mumbai: AI180, 22:00-03:40+2 (17h 10m)

stay aware: Sign up for my weekly new routes newsletter.

In 2019, Mumbai-San Francisco had 148,000 roundtrip passengers, according to booking data. It means that San Francisco had 203 passengers daily each way to/from Mumbai when split equally across the year. The California city was Mumbai’s largest werved market in the USA/Canada.

Booking data reveals that most passengers transited with Emirates (over Dubai), Cathay Pacific (Hong Kong), Air India itself (Delhi), Air China (Beijing), and Lufthansa (Frankfurt).

Mumbai-San Francisco passengers paid an average one-way fare (excluding taxes and any fuel surcharge) of $510. Compared to Air India’s existing Delhi-San Francisco, Mumbai is 9% farther in distance terms but had a 16% higher fare. However, for the coming Mumbai-JFK, San Francisco is 8% farther yet had a 6% lower fare.

Will Air India be able to capture enough demand from those willing to pay more to save a few hours by flying nonstop?

As of November 30, Air India has 12 India-US/Canada routes next summer, as summarized below. Notice Hyderabad-Chicago, a route that won’t operate this winter but is scheduled to return in the summer.

What do you make of it all? Let us know in the comments.

South San Francisco’s economic advancement center, a resource hub for residents and business owners in north San Mateo County, will receive $500,000 from the recently passed $1.5 trillion federal appropriations act, officials announced this week.

The downtown center opened late last month to house programs providing job training and business and entrepreneurship courses. Mayor Mark Nagales said the center complements the city’s other initiatives, like guaranteed income, that aim to help underserved communities.

“People are looking for jobs, and they are also looking for the assistance in terms of placement,” he said. “This is going to be a long-term commitment from us, from the city.”

The city partnered with Bay Area nonprofits JobTrain and the Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center in July last year. Since then, Renaissance has already served 91 clients and secured $86,700 in capital for 19 client businesses in Daly City, San Bruno and South San Francisco, according to the city. Meanwhile, JobTrain has helped 73 clients, 22 who have found job placement with an average wage of more than $22 per hour.

The city committed $2 million over two years from its American Rescue Plan Act funding to the center. Another $1.1 million was granted by the US Economic Development Administration, and the county pitched in $200,000. Genentech contributed $50,000 and Lane Partners gave $10,000. Nagales said the city is continuing to explore additional funding sources.

North County residents can stop by the center to receive résumé and interview help, vocational training and be connected with employers. Small business owners or those interested in starting a business can take courses, network and receive help applying for grants. Services are free and available in both Spanish and English.

The new federal funding will go to the JobTrain program, adding classroom training and enabling expansion of service to at least 50 people, Nagales said. The greater Bay Area is slated to receive $73 million of the appropriations act for various uses.

“We are so incredibly grateful for the efforts of Senators Feinstein and Padilla, and Congresswoman Speier for fighting for the needs of our residents and surrounding communities,” Nagales said. “This money will dramatically improve access to job training and placement services for the region’s most vulnerable residents.”

East Palo Alto is also planned to get a center offering similar services. JobTrain, based in Menlo Park, is partnering on the effort and will provide services at the new location that will be constructed in coming years.

The South San Francisco center is located at 366 Grand Ave. and is open 10 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday.

SACRAMENTO (AP) – California will soon pay healthcare bills for low-income people aged 50 and over living in the country illegally, part of an expansion by Medicaid aimed at bringing the nation’s most populous state to the goal of Democrats Safe Everyone health insurance.

The new coverage will eventually cost taxpayers about $ 1.3 billion a year, money that is part of the new state budget that Governor Gavin Newsom and state legislatures unveiled on Friday evening. The budget is due to be voted on Monday in the state legislature, with Newsom likely to sign it before the state’s fiscal year begins on Thursday.

CONTINUE READING: Lake County fire seizes evacuations in the Kelseyvillesey neighborhood

Dr. Carlos Ruvalcaba, left, examines the patient Paula Medrano, an undocumented immigrant, in the Clinica Sierra Vista Elm in Fresno in a file photo from March 2010. (AP photo / Marcio Jose Sanchez)

California has spent a lot of money making sure everyone has health insurance. The state spends millions each year helping people pay their monthly insurance premiums, and the only state offers subsidies for families of four who earn up to $ 157,200 a year. California also taxes people who refuse to get health insurance.

However, according to UC Berkeley Labor Center, about 3.2 million people in the state are projected to be out of health insurance next year. Almost half of these people live in the country illegally, which means they are not eligible for full Medicaid benefits and other health insurance assistance programs.

Proponents have been pushing for years that all low-income immigrants should be eligible for Medicaid. But the Newsom government has resisted the cost – an estimated $ 2.4 billion a year according to a legal analysis – and instead opted for a phased approach.

Still, the inclusion of benefits for immigrants over 50 was a victory for some health care advocates whose efforts were hampered last year due to a budget deficit projected by the pandemic.

“I have dedicated my whole life to growing vegetables and fruits in the Coachella Valley. I am old and can no longer work in the fields. It’s time for California to think about the health of people like me who gave everything without getting anything, ”said Josefa Barragán, a member of TODEC, an immigrant advocacy group in California’s Inland Empire and Coachella Valley.

CONTINUE READING: Great white shark swimmers off the coast of San Mateo, nearby beaches closed

The budget proposal also makes more elderly people eligible for Medicaid by abolishing the “wealth test”. In general, people on low incomes are eligible for Medicaid. But for people 65 and over, having a low income is not enough. You are also not allowed to have assets of more than $ 2,000 per month for individuals and $ 3,000 per month for couples.

Assets exclude homes and second cars, but include things like cash in checking and savings accounts and some jewelry, excluding wedding or engagement rings and heirlooms. Anthony Wright, executive director of Health Access California, called the wealth test “an antiquated policy that resulted in seniors and people with disabilities losing their health insurance when they have savings – even a modest amount for housing or an emergency.”

The elimination of the wealth test will add an additional 17,802 people to the state’s Medicaid program in 2020, according to an analysis by the Department of Health, which costs about $ 220 million a year.

The budget proposal is an agreement between Newsom and the state’s top two legislative leaders – Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins and Speaker of Parliament Anthony Rendon. All three are Democrats with large majorities in both chambers of the legislature.

The proposal equates to $ 262.6 billion in government spending, including the record reserves of $ 25.2 billion. However, it is not a final budget agreement between the three parties as some important details have not yet been finalized. Legislators are still negotiating with Newsom on details of a rate hike for childcare providers and how to spend $ 4 billion fighting forest fires and the drought.
