MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) — South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said Thursday he wants “every liberal jumping off bridges in San Francisco because Herschel Walker won” while campaigning for him in Georgia.

Graham said politics is tough, and unlike football, there’s “no helmet in politics.”

“All this crap they’re throwing at you coming from Los Angeles. 13 days before an election. All you got going for you is the people of Georgia,” Graham said.

Graham’s comments come after another woman said she was pressured to get an abortion by Walker.

“Why are they so focused on Herschel? They are afraid of Herschel Walker,” Graham said. “Because if Herschel Walker wins that means we’re not racist. And if you’re a republican, aren’t you tired of being called a racist all the time by everybody?”

Graham also mentioned South Carolina Senator Tim Scott and said “what liberals fear the most” is “a strong confident Black man being a Republican in Washington.”

“We’re going to have a bunch of Spanish women become Republican congressmen because the border is broken,” Graham said.

Graham compared the situation to accusations against now—Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“Right at the end, all this stuff comes out,” Graham said. “There’s another one. And another one. And another one. Well, you know what? You know how that movie ended? Kavanaugh stood there. Stood his ground. Trump had his back, and he’s on the Supreme Court.”

Graham said the people of Georgia will have Walker’s back and will send him to the US Senate.

A person’s age doesn’t define the power of their voice and that’s what the students of South San Francisco Unified School District learned after hundreds of students, teachers and parents gathered at City Hall to celebrate the annual Ruby Bridges Day.

Monday’s march was led with Mayor Mark Nagales speaking about the impact Bridges made and the power of student voices.

“It just shows me it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can make a difference in your community. And these amazing kids show me that you can do it if you put your mind to it,” Nagales said.

Bridges’ official day is Nov. 14, the day she first entered the previously all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans as the first Black student. The 6-year-old, first grader and her mother required the guard of US marshals as white protesters hurled racial slurs as they walked to school.

The district’s first celebration began in 2018, with a fifth graders’ question: “Why isn’t there a day named after Ruby Bridges?”

The students from Martin Elementary School organized to honor Bridges after learning about her during a lesson. Fifth grade teacher Deborah Carlino helped the students gather signatures to gain city, county, then state recognition in the form of a day to honor the civil rights hero.

Carlino learned in school during her masters program that getting students involved in public policy will help their overall growth. She said she wants to teach them to be strong and resilient.

“I always want my children involved in something, beyond the class and beyond themselves,” Carlino said. “Their first thought was, ‘let’s call the president,’ and they think we can just call them on our bat-phone, but there is a process and we went through that process.”

After the walk-to-school event Martin Elementary held a schoolwide assembly and Ruby Bridges came to surprise the students.

Principal Jonathan Covacha said they gave the students time and space to talk and reflect on the day.

“It was a day of dialogue, which is what Ms. Bridges wants for the students,” Covacha said. “Sometimes you don’t sign up to be the person that makes a difference, but, once they are there, go ahead and make their voice heard because it matters.”

During the assembly the students presented ideas of change that they wanted to see locally including: a compost bin for their lunchroom, to lower their carbon footprint; homeless issues; student attendance issues; and importance of going to class.

They also expressed a need to reopen the city’s after school program at Paradise Valley, which is within walking distance of Martin Elementary. It was recently closed by the city and moved to Orange Park, which is on the other side of town.

A lot of the parents had to opt out of the program because moving locations would require them to pick their children up to take them to Orange Park. While many parents don’t drive, or are working, it has become inconvenient; however, there is a need and the children want the location reopened or a solution to be met, Covacha said.

At a later date, students along with Carlino will be presenting their ideas at a City Council meeting, she said, the goal is for the kids to connect the kids to make an action.

“I always feel whatever action we make creates a ripple effect, we just don’t always see it,” Carlino said. “I really want to challenge grown-ups to rise to the occasion, because it’s about looking at the world through the eyes of a child, the way Ruby saw it.”

Charmaine Wilks, 51, works as an accounting clerk at the head office of the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) in Kingston.

She spends her days processing tax certificates on the TAJ system, doing bank reconciliation, bank charges, inventory reconciliation, auditing schedules for subsidiary companies and filing tax certificates.

Her current job description is incomparable to the years she spent clearing drains, fixing pipes, and removing blockage from sewage systems as a certified plumber.

For years, Wilks worked as a temporary plumber at Urban Maintenance Limited, a subsidiary of the UDC. And after it closed, she got a permanent job with the UDC.

She decided that he wanted to become a plumber after noticing the inadequacies in the plumbing system at her parents’ house and fixed it with no expertise. Impressed with what she achieved, Wilks decided to get certified in the skill.

In 2002, she enrolled at the HEART College of Construction Services, formerly Portmore Heart Academy, and did up to level three in the course. Wilks recalls being the only female in the class, but she was undaunted.

“It is a joy for me working in a field dominated by men. I want to ensure the customers get quality standard work, and the finishing must look good and no short handwork or ripped off. Also, I prefer to work with males,” she said.

After a decade working as a plumber, she decided to further upskill and get a level four certification at the Portmore Community College. However, not enough students were enrolled, and so according to Wilks, the college scrapped the programme, and she was encouraged to choose another course of study.

“It was easier for me to shift my skills area to business. Because business was my vocational area in school as a teenager, and accounts was my favorite subject. I also have worked in a hardware store and help manage the business finances,” she said.

A few years later, Wilks decided to pursue a career fully in business. “In January 2018, I make my career shift when I started my Associate of Science Degree in Business Studies and did my first working experience in Finance and Accounts at UDC in November 2019 and was promoted to that department in February 2020. So I continue on the education path and completed my Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration February 2022,” she said.

She said her decision to change career paths was made easier because of the support she gets from her family, and her employer.

“I was encouraged not to give up my plumbing even though I am fulfilling another role and I should keep up the good work. Moreover, having two good skills that can contribute significantly to the company and it also makes me more marketable,” she said.

And according to Wilks, the years she spent as a plumber have solidified some characteristics which are now proving to be very beneficial to her current role.

“I am ambitious and very committed and have a positive attitude towards my work. I ensure that I maintain my integrity in the workplace and try to have a good relationship with both internal and external customers and get feedback from them to see if they are satisfied with the service they are getting,” she said.

“I am so self-motivated. Furthermore, I always aim for the highest and whatever I want to achieve I work hard to get it. Being self-confident, I never fear if I won’t do well.”

And for women who may be thinking of switching careers, Wilks had this advice: “I would advise them that they choose a skill area that they love. Having more than one skill will help them to be more marketable and even better in their finances. Choosing a technical skill they can save some money because they can do the job themselves.”
