A roundup of some of the happiest places in the world, from Europe to Australia

Visit the President's Nose and the Sewer Worker's Helmet, which bring good luck

See the boar's mouth and the chimney sweep's hat, which are said to grant wishes

They say fortune favors the brave.

But it is also said that luck favors anyone who touches one of these statues and sculptures, from Dalida's breasts to Lincoln's nose.

Kiskiralylany aka The Little Princess, Budapest, Hungary

Kiskiralylany, also known as the Little Princess, sits on the railing of the tram tracks near the Széchenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest

The little princess sits on the railing of the tram tracks near the Széchenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest.

She is the creation of sculptor László Marton, who was inspired by his daughter's penchant for dressing up as a princess, using her bathrobe as a cape and a crown made of newspaper.

Since the statue was erected in the 1990s, it has become a tradition for passers-by to rub its knees for good luck.

Cumil, the sewer worker, Bratislava, Slovakia

The statue of the sewer worker Cumil is located on the corner of Laurinská and Panská streets in the Old Town of Bratislava.

You will find Cumil emerging from a manhole cover on the corner of Laurinská and Panská streets in Bratislava's Old Town with a cheeky smile on his face.

The statue was installed in the sidewalk in 1997 as part of a redevelopment project, and there is disagreement among locals as to whether Cumil is taking a break from work or looking up women's skirts.

According to local legend, if you touch the top of his hat, your wishes will come true.

Il Porcellino, Florence, Italy

Il Porcellino – which means “piglet” – is located in Florence, a two-minute walk from the Ponte Vecchio. Tourists can throw coins into its mouth to make a wish.

Outside the Mercato del Porcellino, a two-minute walk from the Florentine bridge Ponte Vecchio, stands the decorative, partially hollowed-out piglet sculpture “Il Porcellino”.

Visitors can put coins in his mouth and make a wish, which then collect in his stomach.

However, the wish ritual is not complete without rubbing the boar's nose afterwards.

The Monument to the Chimney Sweep, Lviv, Ukraine

The monument to the chimney sweep is located on the roof of the House of Legends cafe in Lviv, Ukraine

The decorative chimney sweep monument in Lviv challenges visitors to make their wishes come true. First, they must climb to the top floor of the House of Legends cafe.

Once on the roof, they have to climb another spiral staircase before they get the chance to throw a coin into the hat for good luck.

Most people miss something, and visitors on the roof below are sometimes surprised by a shower of Ukrainian hryvnia when they try to climb up to make a wish.

Monument to Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Lviv, Ukraine

The monument to Leopold von Sacher-Masoch is located in front of the S&M Café Masoch in the Old Town of Lviv

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch is considered the founder of the S&M movement and his statue stands in front of the Masoch cocktail bar on Serbska Street in the old town of Lviv.

Visitors can put their hand in his pocket and wish for luck. But be careful, the pocket is not empty… You will be touching the statue's “private parts”.

After expressing their wish, most visitors head to the SM bar Masoch. Don't worry, the SM part is a gimmick to entertain the tourists and is not meant to be taken seriously.

Some visitors order a little “light whipping” from the barmaid with their cocktails, but that’s just a bit of fun.

The statue of Dalida, Paris, France

The bust of Dalida is located on Place Dalida in the Paris district of Montmartre and is a monument to the French singer.

The bust of Dalida is located on Place Dalida in the Paris district of Montmartre and is a memorial to the French singer and actress Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti, who was known by her stage name Dalida.

She sold over 170 million albums and singles worldwide and was a darling of the city of Paris.

She committed suicide in 1987 and the statue was erected on the 10th anniversary of her death.

According to tradition, touching her breasts brings good luck.

Abraham Lincoln, Springfield, Illinois

Lincoln's lucky nose is located directly in front of Abraham Lincoln's grave at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Illinois

A bust of Lincoln stands in front of Abraham Lincoln's grave at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Illinois.

The president's distinctive nose shines gold thanks to years of rubbing by visitors.

Some locals say that rubbing the nose brings good luck, while others say it brings wisdom.

Fala, Washington DC, USA

The statue of the terrier Fala on the grounds of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial in Washington DC is said to have a lucky nose and ears

The Scottish Terrier Fala was the dog of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

A life-size statue of Fala stands faithfully at the feet of his master in the massive Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, DC

Some say rubbing its nose brings good luck, others say it's the ears that bring good luck. Rub both to be on the safe side.

Marin Držić, Dubrovnik, Croatia

The statue of Marin Držić with her lucky nose is located opposite the Church of St. Blaise in the Old Town of Dubrovnik

Marin Držić was a Croatian writer who is now affectionately known as Dubrovnik’s Shakespeare.

A statue of him stands opposite St. Blaise's Church, near the Rector's Palace in the red-roofed Old Town of Dubrovnik.

According to local legend, rubbing your nose will bring you good luck.

Bremen Town Musicians, Riga, Latvia

The statue of the Bremen Town Musicians is located in Skārņu Street between St. Peter's Church and the Monastery Courtyard in Riga.

Why the statue of the Bremen Town Musicians is called that is not immediately clear. The statue shows a rooster sitting on a cat, which is standing on a dog, which is balancing on a donkey.

The statue was inspired by the Brothers Grimm fable, which tells the story of four mistreated animals who ran away to become musicians. The sculptor wanted the statue to have a political undertone.

It is considered a good luck charm to rub the nose or beak of each of the four musicians.

The statue is located in Skārņu Street between St. Peter's Church and the monastery courtyard.

John Harvard, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

The boot of the John Harvard statue at Harvard University is said to bring good luck if rubbed

Rabbit's feet are not the only lucky feet in the world. At Harvard University there is a statue of its namesake and co-founder, the English clergyman and scholar John Harvard, who is said to have a lucky left foot.

Students rub his boot to have luck in exams.

The statue is located in Harvard Yard, probably the oldest part of the elite university.

The Knight of Paris, also known as Monument to the Street Man, Havana, Cuba

El Caballero de Paris, also known as Monument to the Homeless Man, is located in Old Havana, Cuba

If you visit Old Havana during rush hour, you can easily miss the Monument to the Street Man.

This bronze statue of a walking man gets lost in the crowds of tourists, performance artists and street vendors selling things like ice cream in coconut shells.

The statue itself is said to be inspired by a man named José María López Lledín, also known as the Gentleman of Paris, who was a common sight on the streets of Havana in the late 20th century.

The myth says that if you touch his beard and make a wish, your wish will come true.

A replica of Queen Victoria's terrier Islay sits on a wishing well

Islay, Sydney, Australia

This 60 centimetre high bronze statue is a replica of Queen Victoria's Cairn Terrier Islay and is located on a sandstone wishing well in front of the Queen Victoria Building on George Street in Sydney.

What sets this statue apart from others in the world is that it speaks. Periodically, a recording of the dog asking for money is played over nearby speakers.

Those who donate should be rewarded with the fulfillment of a wish.

The Piglet, Sydney, Australia

The statue of Il Porcellino in front of Sydney Hospital is a replica of the Wishing Statue in Florence, Italy

This is a replica of the statue and wishing well of the same name in Florence.

It is located outside Sydney Hospital, opposite Macquarie Street.

Just like his doppelganger in Italy, he eats coins given to him by visitors who make wishes. The money goes to the hospital.

John of Nepomuk, Prague, Czech Republic

The statue of John of Nepomuk on the Charles Bridge with its lucky tablets

There is a phalanx of statues on either side of the Charles Bridge in Prague, but because of the crowds of tourists and the street art and souvenir stalls, it is not always easy to see them clearly.

There is one thing you shouldn't miss, however: The statue of John of Nepomuk is the eighth statue on the right as you walk from the Old Town towards Prague Castle.

It marks the spot where Saint John of Nepomuk was thrown from the bridge and murdered on the orders of the king in the 14th century.

While the location of the statue was anything but fortunate for the unfortunate saint, this spot is now said to represent the end of a rainbow for visitors.

Touch the tablet on the right side of the statue, make a wish and your wish should come true.

Part 1 of a two-part article on the high performance characteristics of 350 Mission in San Francisco.

A very high level of sustainable design characterizes 350 Mission, a 30-story office tower on Mission Street in San Francisco. The building is LEED v2.2 certified LEED Platinum and also meets the 2011 California Green Building Code (CALGreen) and the San Francisco Green Building Code. To achieve this goal, the owner, Kilroy Realty Corp., and the design team explored a wide range of innovative, high-performance MEP solutions.

The mechanical and lighting systems incorporate numerous energy saving measures. As with all mechanical structures, the primary design criteria were occupant comfort, space, resource efficiency and cost. All occupied spaces must meet the thermal comfort criteria of ASHRAE Standard 55, which sets guidelines for temperature and air velocity under various installation conditions and recognizes the benefits of occupant control over their local thermal environment.

The high-performance HVAC solution is an underfloor air distribution (UFAD) strategy. The main reasons for this decision were lower operating energy consumption, improved indoor air quality (IAQ), individual comfort and controllability of the occupants, longer operating times of the air saver and flexibility in space use. The UFAD system, in conjunction with a high-efficiency chiller and an air saver, offers an excellent HVAC solution. In addition to air distribution, the UFAD plenum also provides power, voice and data distribution.

While other high-performance HVAC alternatives were considered, project leaders pointed to UFAD. Some system alternatives enabled even greater energy savings, such as chilled beams with a dedicated outside air system (DOAS). Another option investigated was an optimized overhead VAV system.

Ultimately, the comparative studies showed that the UFAD system achieved all project objectives, including the owner's vision for flexible office space, improved IAQ and energy savings. The system also achieved the required cooling capacity to offset the thermal loads on the building envelope.

The building's direct digital control (DDC) building management system is fully interoperable and controls both the base building's core and shell systems and tenant systems, including the underfloor fan boxes, chilled water temperature sensors, lighting system, carbon dioxide occupancy sensors and demand-controlled ventilation.

The HVAC system maximizes energy efficiency by delivering conditioned air directly to occupants at floor level, where it is then stratified and ducted above the occupancy zone (via a ceiling void or open ceiling) back to units on each floor.

With a floor distribution, the supply air can be warmer (60 to 62°F) than with a ceiling distribution (55°F) because only the area where people are present needs to be cooled, not the entire room up to the ceiling. The air temperature can increase closer to the ceiling as it leaves the occupied room. The reduced need to cool the supply air results in less energy demand from the chiller, which does not need to produce cooler chilled water.

In addition, UFAD is a low-pressure system. Since the air is not forced through a network of ducts and dampers, the system can achieve significant fan energy savings. The interior zone of each room is a large open air space. UFAD requires only peripheral fan-driven boxes in the external areas.

In terms of IAQ, the floor-mounted air supply and ceiling-mounted return take advantage of the natural tendency of air to rise when heated, pulling it through the occupants' breathing zone. This is the most effective ventilation distribution strategy according to ASHRAE Standard 62.1. Manually adjustable floor diffusers are also provided, allowing occupants to adjust the air volume and optimize their individual thermal comfort.

Other key energy saving measures include energy-saving LED lighting, daylight control, light occupancy sensors and a high-efficiency water heater. In addition to being used in the cooling tower, reclaimed rainwater is also used to flush toilets.

Photo Caption: 350 Mission is a LEED Platinum-certified, 30-story office tower on Mission Street in San Francisco, directly across from the new Transbay Transit Center in the rapidly developing South of Market district. • Completed in 2015, the $250 million project sits on a scant 19,000-square-foot site. The 420,000-square-foot building is a Type 1 concrete structure with a total height of approximately 420 feet. • The tower is clad in a high-performance, unitized curtain wall with alternating inward and outward leaning panels, giving the facade a “woven” appearance as light reflects off the surface. • The tower features a 50-foot-tall lobby that also functions as a free-flowing, open public space. The space utilizes a unique folding glass wall system that opens the lobby to the street while maintaining the interior climate with an energy-efficient radiant floor heating and cooling system. A real-time digital video screen displays art. • All of the building's prime office space has been pre-leased to Salesforce, a global cloud computing company.

Sitting right up there with sprawling mountain ranges and cascading waterfalls, cliffs rank rather high in the dramatic natural landscapes category. These steep facades are innately precarious, lending a sense of adventure to whomever dares to stand atop one. Or, in the case of the roundup ahead, who dares to build a hotel on one. The best cliffside properties around the world can be found perched in picturesque regions and with outstanding views, some situated along rocky coastlines and others within mountain ranges or escarpments. The unifying trait? A front-row seat to unparalleled beauty.

With 2023 around the corner, planning a memorable getaway in a scenic destination feels all but necessary. And regardless of where you’re looking to travel to — the Caribbean, Mexico, South Africa, or beyond — just about every pocket of the globe boasts a jaw-dropping cliffside hotel to enjoy it from. Below, take in TZR’s favorite properties perched atop a cliff in breathtaking locales around the world and explore the different activities that enhance the drama (think: mountain-top picnics, desert wall climbing, and more). And even if an international trip isn’t in the cards for the new year, there are plenty of equally magnificent cliffside resorts to book a stay at right here in the states. All of that, and more, ahead.

You need little introduction to the natural splendor of Italy’s famed Amalfi coast, a UNESCO-listed region defined by its steep cliffs and dazzling blue Tyrrhenian sea. Along the coastline lie 13 picturesque towns and miles of hiking trails offering panoramic views, like the legendary Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods). In short — it’s the perfect destination to build a cliffside hotel. Perhaps the most iconic is Le Sirenuse Positano, which opened in 1951 and is on every aesthete’s travel bucket list. A few miles away, Borgo Santandrea recently made a splash with its debut (it’s the first Amalfi hotel to open in 15 years). The cliffside property perches 90 meters above sea level and features 29 rooms and 16 suites, all with sea views (two suites even have private infinity pools). Also worthy of a cliffside callout: Monastero Santa Rosa. The property was originally a Dominican monastery built in the 17th century and is perched atop a cliffside at the edge of the fishing village of Conca dei Marini.

California Coastline

California’s vast coastline stretches nearly 900 miles, giving way for countless cliffside hotels to crop up. One such property that tends to top the lists of dramatic view seekers is Post Ranch Inn along the breathtaking Big Sur coastline on Highway 1. The property has been open since the early ‘90s and sits atop cliffs soaring 1200 feet above the Pacific Ocean. A few hours north near San Francisco, The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay is nestled on a cliff beside the rocky coastline. The resort was designed by HKS Architects and taps into the nostalgia of 19th-century seaside lodges with its vignette of dormers, gables, and chimneys creating a unique silhouette against the vast blue sky.

Bali

The dazzling Indonesian province of Bali is replete with mind-bogglingly beautiful landscapes well-suited for adventurous travelers. Taking it up a notch, Six Senses Uluwatu is located on a dramatic cliffside at Bali’s southern tip, giving visitors front-row seats to the Indian Ocean. The property is also the location of Pura Uluwatu, which is one of this Hindu island’s most sacred temples, all adding to the spiritual quality of this scenic setting. Also in the region, Bulgari Resort Bali is another traveler favorite thanks to its position 150 meters above the sea and breathtaking sunrise and sunset views each day. If you’re ready for a dip, the resort has a private funicular that travels directly to a pristine stretch of beach.

Turkey

Yunak Evleri Cave Hotel

Surrounded on three sides by the Black, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas, Turkey is a large, beautiful peninsula that bridges Europe and Asia and is home to some of the oldest settlements in the world. Mountains and cliffs are abundant in the country, and at Yunak Evleri guests can stay in this unique hotel that was carved into a mountain cliff. The property is a collection of cave houses dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries beside a 19th-century Greek mansion. There are two swimming pools and and outdoor fireplace to relax and watch the sunset at. If you’re looking for a stepping-back-in-time kind of travel experience, this is it.

Jamaica

The Caves Hotel

One comes to Jamaica for many things — the culture, the history, the food, the scenery, and more. This Caribbean island nation is lush and awe-inducing, and a property that exemplifies all of its best traits lies on the north coast of Jamaica in Negril. The Caves offers 12 cottages perched along limestone cliffs plus unique amenities like private cave dining, a seaview spa, and The Blackwell Rum Bar that’s accessed by taking a coral staircase down to the water’s edge, crossing a wooden footbridge, and arriving at the secret cave. The walls of the bar are the volcanic cliffs, making for a thoroughly immersive cocktail experience.

Mallorca

For a travel locale that delivers on scenery, history, cuisine, and accommodations — Mallorca isn’t a bad place to start. The Mediterranean island has long been a destination for those transfixed by its turquoise waters and limestone mountains, perhaps best experienced at a cliffside hotel. Cap Rocat is located within a fortress and the building is a Heritage Asset and listed as a National Monument. It’s located in the secluded area of the Bay of Palma and the Sentinels room, specifically, offers magnificent views. Jumeirah Port Soller is another cliffside retreat on Mallorca and sits high above the port on the edge of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range.

Washington

Salish Lodge & Spa

For those who have explored its many national parks and breathtaking Pacific Northwest beauty, Washington is a slice of heaven right here in the states. One unique way to experience nature here is at Salish, Lodge & Spa — a property that is perched atop both a cliff and 268-foot waterfall (Snoqualmie Falls, to be exact). It’s located 30 minutes east of Seattle for easy accessibility and the dining room is situated right next to the falls for picturesque meals.

Australia

For adventurous types, the El Questro Homestead in Western Australia is a dramatic property perched at the very tip of a clifftop in the East Kimberley region. It’s surrounded by avenues of frangipani trees and the nine suites overlook the Chamberlain River. The most luxurious suite has floor-to-ceiling windows, a wraparound veranda, outdoor dining area, plus an indoor-outdoor double bath for two. Take in the rugged ranges and sparkling waters in this magnificent pocket of scenic beauty.

Baja Peninsula

Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection

The Baja California peninsula is located in northwestern Mexico and has nearly 2,000 miles of coastline. Whale watching, desert landscapes, and secluded beaches are among the many reasons tourists flock to this unique part of the country. Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection is at the southern tip in Baja California Sur and situated between two scenic bluffs. The property’s natural-toned design motifs blend in and complement the surrounding beaches and rocky cliffs overlooking the Sea of Cortez. At the same time, Made in Mexico decor accents such as textiles and millwork bring the property to life.

Ireland

Cliff House Hotel

A country already famous for its steep sea cliffs, Ireland is a natural fit for those seeking a dramatic hotel. Cliff House Hotel is near Cork and Waterford and is a privately owned luxury hotel that’s been around since 1932, with a complete rebuild in 2008. The property is rooted on a cliff on the south side of Ardmore Bay and offers 39 rooms plus an Irish destination spa and one Michelin-star restaurant. The design is timeless and atmospheric — white walls, cups stone columns, and sedum moss-covered roofs with limestone terracing.

Greek Islands

A visit to the Greek islands proves this magical destination is, indeed, vertically oriented. It’s only natural then that cliffside properties abound in this part of the Aegean Sea, beginning with Mystique Hotel Santorini. It was carved into the Caldera cliffs that overlook the water, and is a collection of 41 stone-crafted, cave-style suites and villas located across from an active volcano. Also a staple in Santorini, Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection sits atop a cliff and boasts one of the best infinity pools in the region. The cuisine here is also a major draw, with Michelin-awarded chef Lefteris Lazarou at the helm of the Greek and Mediterranean flavors.

Pacific Coast of Mexico

Referred to by some as the Mexican Riviera, the country’s Pacific coast is an enclave of beach resorts that highlight the region’s arresting beauty. In Acapulco, Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués is an eco resort with 45 private pool villas and residences that cling to the dramatic hillside of Punta Diamante. Here, guests soak in sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean while enjoying amenities like al fresco dining. Just a few minutes from Zihuatanejo, Cala de Mar is a resort and spa perched atop the cliffside of Ixtapa. The property has 59 suites, each with a private heated plunge pool and views of the ocean and the design follows the Zihua style philosophy with minimal straight lines or right angles, just as it is in nature.

British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands are situated in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico and are composed of the main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gordo, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke (plus many other smaller islands and cays). One of these smaller escapes is Moskito Island — an all-inclusive resort with four grand estates offering striking views and unparalleled beach access. While here, guests can enjoy customized vacations with experiences like picnics on Manchioneel beach to themed dinners with live jazz bands. In 2023, the main house will debut a cantilevered glass-bottom hot tub that extends over the cliff’s edge. Over in Virgin Gorda, Oil Nut Bay is a beloved 400-acre resort with cliffside suites, some as high as 700 feet above sea level. Witness views of the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, plus a picturesque overwater restaurant and bar.

South Africa

With 21 national parks, 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and remarkable biodiversity, it’s no wonder that South Africa is such an appealing destination for travelers. Here, on the cliffs of the Cape Winelands region, guests at Birkenhead House can overlook the whale watching enclave of Walker Bay from the cliffside pool or from one of the 11 individually designed rooms located in three separate houses that make up the property. At The Twelve Apostles in Cape Town, visitors get the unique vantage point of being positioned above the Atlantic Ocean and between the Twelve Apostles Mountain Range and Table Mountain National Park. This luxury boutique hotel has two restaurants, both excellent for watching the evening sunset from.

Kenya

Angama Mara

There’s nowhere on earth quite like Kenya — this east African country has coastlines along the Indian Ocean, mountain highlands, dramatic savanna grasslands, and much, much more. For those traveling here for a safari, Angama Mara is a luxury lodge in the Maasai Mara. It’s placed on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment and the property’s name is a nod to the Swahili word for ‘suspended in midair.’ While here, guests will stay in 30-foot-wide tens with floor-to-ceiling glass fronts that look out over the Great Rift Valley.

Canada

Fogo Island Inn

It is said that Fogo Island Inn is located at one of the four corners of the world. This 43,000 square-foot Newfoundland luxury hotel overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and was designed by architect Todd Saunders. The property is perched on stilts and its 29 one-of-a-kind rooms hug the North Atlantic coastline with floor-to-ceiling views. The island has seven singular seasons and offers activities ranging from stargazing and bird watching to hiking and snowmobiling.

Dominica

To know the Caribbean Island of Dominica is to know unspoiled natural splendor. This lush escape is abundant with rainforests, rivers, and mountains and a visit is nothing short of spectacular. At Secret Bay (a property renowned for its cliffside location), guests can book one of 12 residential style villas. The Zabuco Villa was built on a clifftop promontory and is on the furthest point, lending 180-degree vistas over the mountain peaks. And even if you don’t book it, there are other special spots around the property with cliffside facets like the new Gwiyavye’ Lap Pool & Bar and the resort’s Gommier Spa. Coulibri Ridge is a newly-opened property also on Dominica and is a 14-suite, 285-acre resort perched atop a mountain ridge near the village of Soufrière. The resort is off-grid and uses solar energy as its main power source; also, rainwater is collected through their unique roof design and funneled to guest suites and two chlorine-free pools.

Hawaii

Hawaii and its network of breathtaking islands is one of those places with indisputable beauty. It’s an otherworldly destination that celebrates nature in all of its facets, from volcanos and rainforests to coastlines and coral reefs. Not at all shocking: there are many striking hotels here. At Timbers Kauai at Hokuala, the oceanside cliffs of Kauai cradle this luxury resort and private residences. It sits on the oceanside edge of 450 acres and is surrounded by 13 miles of nature trails. On the island of Maui, Montage Kapalua Bay hugs a coastal cliff on the west coast, giving prime views for whale watching and turtle spotting. The resort is set on 24 acres and this past spring it welcomed back Champagne Hale at Cliff House — an intimate cliffside venue that was originally built in 1940 as a facility for the managers of the historic Honolua Plantation.

Oman

Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar

A regal resort that once hosted Princess Diana, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Oman is located a two hours’ drive inland from Muscat and up in the mountains. In fact, it is one of the world’s highest luxury resorts and each of its rooms look out onto the dramatic canyon. Here, you’ll be surrounded by cliffs and can enjoy activities like a climb wall, hiking, cinema under the stars, and yoga atop the scenic lookout of Diana’s Point.

In the lazy hours of a late Sunday afternoon, a steady stream of customers passed under the dark green awning of Polynesian Island Luau. According to its patrons, the takeout-style restaurant and retail shop — where shark tooth necklaces dangle from the ceiling, racks of floral shirts line the walls, and the owner’s granddaughter runs the register on the weekends — is the last of its kind in the Bay Area.

“I come here whenever I can,” said Lori Peneueta, 40, who drove from Sacramento to visit the market, which straddles Geneva Avenue on the border of San Francisco and Daly City. “This is a part of my heritage, and it’s one of the only places I can really feel that.”

To the left of the 22-year-old business, there’s a KFC and a Taco Bell. Across the street, the hulking mass of a Dollar Tree. Sitting beside a four-lane highway, Polynesian Island Luau has witnessed the decline of nearby Visitacion Valley’s once-vibrant Pacific Islander community. But now, it may have a front-row seat for its comeback.

After more than seven years of on-the-ground organizing, the neighborhood stands poised to become part of a new Pacific Islander Cultural District. On Tuesday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is expected to adopt legislation creating such a district, making it the 10th cultural district in the city.

Stephen Lam / The Chronicle

“There are a lot of Pacific Islanders across the area, so to have a place of our own would be really cool,” Polynesian Island Luau employee Thana Puni, 18, said from behind a tray of steaming plantains coated in coconut cream. “I would feel great if (the district) happens.”

Since the inception of the program in 2018, San Francisco has recognized cultural districts in Japantown, the Castro and the Mission to both honor and preserve diverse communities. Pacific Islander leaders hope the recognition and resources that come with such a designation will mark a turning point in a community long forgotten by the city.

“My goal is that 100 years from now, our community doesn’t have to suffer anymore,” said Gaynor Siataga, the director of San Francisco’s Pacific Islander Community Hub, a new community-based organization in Bayview. “They can go somewhere they belong, somewhere people understand them, and have some sense of identity and belonging here in this wonderful city.”

But with generations of entrenched disparities — and the risk of losing more community members to rising costs of living — those pushing for the cultural district know that this week’s vote is just the beginning.

A small community with a deep history

According to data from the 2020 census, the Pacific Islander community makes up just 0.4% of San Francisco’s population. Despite its size, the population has roots in the city more than a century old.

In the mid-1800s, Native Hawaiians made up 10% of the population in Yerba Buena, the settlement that later became San Francisco, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior. During World Wars I and II, the U.S. military recruited Samoans, Tongans, Fijians and other islanders as it expanded its reach across the Pacific. But once World War II ended, many of the employment opportunities did too — leading to an exodus of Pacific Islanders to San Francisco.

Some came for jobs at the Hunter’s Point Naval Shipyard. Others were recruited to work in farms in and around the city. Still others were sponsored by the Mormon Church, encouraged toward the city for missionary labor after helping build a temple in Hawaii.

By 1985, San Francisco’s Pacific Islander population reached its peak, according to the cultural district’s “resolution document,” which was drafted by community leaders to make a case for the cultural district. But as of the 2020 census, San Francisco’s Pacific Islander community numbered just over 2,150. And in the past decade, the number of Pacific Islanders in Visitacion Valley — the neighborhood where the community first took root — dropped by more than 50%, from 33 people to 15.

In the years since peak migration, the community hasn’t just dissolved in size. It’s also been hit by stark socioeconomic challenges.

Even before the pandemic, 29% of the Pacific Islander community in San Francisco lived below the poverty line with a median per capita income of just $25,930 — the lowest of any ethnic or racial group — according to a 2020 report from the Regional Pacific Islander Taskforce. That data found nearly 15% of the community was unemployed, and nearly 23% lived in overcrowded households. According to the cultural district’s resolution statement, 73% of Pacific Islanders in San Francisco are now in public housing.

“I grew up with, and in, those disparities,” Siataga said. “But when I saw the data, it broke my heart.”

Reliance on public housing, she added, “has been generational. That’s our reality and it’s been our reality, and it’s sad because we know that our ancestors that migrated here came for that American dream. And yet, we’re still stagnant.”

Those disparities exacerbated with the pandemic. Pacific Islanders in California contracted COVID-19 at nearly twice the state’s overall rate. By May 2020, the community had the highest death rate of any racial or ethnic group.

Stephen Lam / The Chronicle

Today, city data shows the COVID-19 case rate for Pacific Islanders still outstrips all other communities: it’s more than double the rate of the city’s American Indian, Black and Hispanic populations, and more than four times that of white San Franciscans.

According to those pushing for the Pacific Islander Cultural District, these statistics are, in part, due to a lack of culturally attuned resources. For 20 years, there was just one fully funded community-based organization serving the population — the Samoan Community Development Center. But Siataga said that despite critical efforts, the organization wasn’t meeting the full range of services Pacific Islanders needed.

Because of that, community leaders say Pacific Islanders became “invisible” across the Bay Area, sinking toward the lowest levels of the city’s socioeconomic indicators.

Efforts with, for and by the community

During the initial phases of the pandemic, five of San Francisco’s Pacific Islander-serving organizations formed the SALLT Association, which aimed to strategically fill gaps they saw widening across the community. By coordinating across entities, SALLT began providing COVID-19 response services, counseling, employment assistance, housing support, language and translation services, and other programming, working alongside the Samoan Community Development Center to do so.

During the same year, Siataga — who has both Samoan and Latino roots — suggested creating a cultural district in the area after seeing its success for the Latino population in the Mission. But while the Latino community in San Francisco was growing, the Pacific Islander community was shrinking. With such small numbers, many felt like accomplishing such recognition would be impossible, Siataga said.

“At first, it was really challenging,” said Siataga, speaking of the first time she mentioned setting up a cultural district. “This community has never seen the resources, support or backing that other communities have seen, so when I first started talking about the cultural district, (the community) said things like: ‘That’ll never happen.’”

Still, she and others got to work.

Siataga encouraged elders to write down their stories, which they compiled into the district’s resolution document to demonstrate the community’s impact on San Francisco and their legacy dating back decades. They got in touch with Supervisor Shamman Walton, whose district encompasses the southeast corner of San Francisco home to many Pacific Islanders. And they dug into the data, trying to better understand what the Pacific Islander community was up against — a difficult task when across not just the city, but also the state, Pacific Islanders were consistently being grouped with the larger Asian community.

Stephen Lam / The Chronicle

By disaggregating that data, a clearer picture of the community’s challenges began to emerge, allowing leaders like Siataga to better pitch the mission of a cultural district and the things it could accomplish.

According to the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, cultural districts provide a funnel for representative policymaking, helping leaders from minority communities take a seat at the city’s decision-making tables. They allot funding to employ those in charge of the cultural district, who together work on a specifically tailored three-year plan.

The Pacific Islander Cultural District will receive the typical annual funding award for cultural districts: $230,000 of hotel tax funds to support the team coordinating the vision for community-led social programs, services and resources in the new district.

Tino Felise, the neighborhood program coordinator at the Samoan Community Development Center, said the cultural district will focus on affordable housing, entrepreneurship and retail development, particularly for smaller mom-and-pop stores.

“Hopefully, establishing this cultural district will help us re-establish our population and make sure this is a place Pacific Islanders can continue to call home,” said Felise, who worked with Siataga to get the cultural district proposed.

Some of this work will draw on the successes of other cultural districts. In the Mission, the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District has implemented policies to halt displacement and gentrification, according to Calle 24 Council President Eric Arguello.

Polynesian Island Luau has been selling its merchandise from a storefront on the border of San Francisco and Daly City for more than two decades.

Stephen Lam / The Chronicle

By placing “special use protections” on incoming development in the Mission, the district has reduced the number of large renovations in the area — developments that would make it impossible for smaller, community-owned businesses to eventually take over those spaces, Arguello said.

“The legislation helped us maintain a healthier balance to protect smaller businesses, and helped us stabilize rent by maintaining smaller spaces for mom and pop stores,” Arguello said.

Still, Arguello noted, each cultural district is led by the needs of that community — and each has its own challenges and solutions.

“The coolest thing about this is that it’s all going to be done by the community,” said Iose Iulio, a housing specialist at the Bayview YMCA, and part of the team behind the Pacific Islander Cultural District. “When you listen to the community and what they really need and want, it’s more likely that they will use the services you provide.”

In some ways, Polynesan Island Luau is San Francisco’s Pacific Islander community in a nutshell. It’s held on in a rapidly changing city, and it’s been witness to inconceivable challenges. But still, it’s standing — and it’s ready to welcome its community back home.

“We get people coming from as far as Seattle to taste our food,” said Lafi Faletoese, the granddaughter of Lafi Wilson, Polynesian Island Luau’s owner. “But there are so few (Pacific Islander-owned businesses), a lot of people don’t know about us. … (Having the Pacific Islander Cultural District) would bring a lot more needed recognition for each and every Polynesian culture that exists.”

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — As we slowly emerge from the coronavirus pandemic, masks are coming off and other COVID-19 restrictions are going away — But will office workers ever fully return to downtown San Francisco’s once thriving Financial District?

“It was very bad, we were scared to come in, basically a ghost town here,” said Jacques Oskanian.

Jacques Osaknian has owned a stationary store in San Francisco’s Embarcadero Center for eight years. He’s still waiting for many customers to return, some of them office workers.

“I never thought of shutting down our business. That’s our bread and butter,” she said.

If you’re on the ABC7 News app, click here to watch live

Now, there are encouraging signs like more people on the streets and more commuters in their cars, headed to work.

Google announced Wednesday it plans to start a hybrid work model on April 4. Bay Area employees must work three days in the office, the other two from home.

RELATED: Will San Francisco’s Financial District Ever Bounce Back?

“There’s still a need for face-to-face interaction and creativity, looking forward to those companies coming back to San Francisco employees on the street with small businesses benefiting,” said Rodney Fong, President and CEO of San Francisco’s Chamber of Commerce.

Some workers are in no hurry to get back. Vic Leung is spending just one day in the office.

“I enjoy the people connection I miss it, it’s a good hybrid for me,” Leung said.

VIDEO: High-tech projection mapping aims to bring people back to San Francisco

Mayor London Breed is pushing for more employers to bring workers back to the business district.

Mayor Breed’s office released a statement, saying in part:
“The mayor has been working with organizations like the Chamber of Commerce and talking to business leaders about announcing a shared commitment to return to the office… We will have more specifics soon… There is a lot of support for San Francisco and bringing workers back, though we know things will look different moving forward to allow for flexibility in the workplace.”

Experts say weekly office attendance is about 25 percent, with a slow uptick forward.

“Our calculations say buildings are ready and safe, now we need the right mentality. It’s time to come back to the city,” said John Bryant from Building Owners and Managers Association of San Francisco.

SF Travel reports a 20-percent increase in bookings at the Moscone Center since December, the busiest month is expected to be June.

With more encouraging signs on the road back to normal, Jacques is optimistic.

“I see movement, things are going better and better,” he said.

The San Francisco Bay Area will experience exceptionally high tides and minor flooding along the bay’s shoreline on Saturday and Sunday mornings, the National Weather Service said. Extremely low tides will occur on Saturday and Sunday evening.

“Tide poolers and beachgoers should be familiar with the times and heights of local tidal levels to avoid hazards that may arise from rapidly shifting water levels,” the weather service warned.

David King, a forecaster with the weather service, warned that people at the beach can get into trouble by walking out to exposed tide pools during low tide and not returning to shore before the tide comes back in.

Water from San Francisco Bay spills onto the Embarcadero on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, during the week of the King Tide.

Courtesy of Twitter user @Burritojustice

The astronomical tides, or king tides, usually occur in December and January, when the sun and moon reach their closest points to Earth, aligning the celestial bodies like a perfect cue shot to create maximum gravitation pull.

“We usually get two rounds of king tides in the winter time,” said King. “There’s usually one that happens in December. This is happening pretty much generally speaking when we expect.”

King Tides will impact the area the next 3 days & bring some of the highest & lowest tides of the year.

These tides will bring localized flooding to several low lying areas along the SF bayshore during high tide during the mid to late morning each day. https://t.co/TZ4mWUYPEf pic.twitter.com/jC4kQWSZVF

The high tides will be on Saturday at 10:30 am (7.13 feet) and Sunday at 11:16 am (7.11 feet), while low tides will occur Saturday at 5:23 pm (-1.7 feet) and Sunday at 6:13 pm (-1.76 feet). The level of the sea will shift some eight feet in a little over seven hours each day.

King tides are a preview of how sea level rise will affect coastal places in the future, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Ready Estuaries program said.

“As time goes by, the water level reached now during a king tide will be the water level reached at high tide on an average day,” the program said.

The California King Tides Project is encouraging anyone near the coast to send in photos of the high tides, as part of its effort to increase understanding of what the state will experience as climate change causes sea level to rise.

Light rain fell over North Bay on Sunday morning, with more rain for the San Francisco Bay Area as two weak storms are expected to sweep the area, the National Weather Service reported.

These storms will not come close to the strength of the recent atmospheric river that soaked Northern California on Oct. 24, but they will keep conditions humid in an arid region plagued by drought and wildfires.

“Historically, we would be at the height of the fire season and it’s nice not to have to deal with it,” said Ryan Walbrun, a forecaster with the Weather Service.

A system in the north cut off the north bay this morning and brought unexpected drizzle that will subside later in the morning. Shortly after 7 a.m., the weather service reported that Mount Tamalpais had also registered 0.39 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. “The sequoias are happy,” said the weather service.

That rain came after Mount Marin County recorded nearly 17 inches of rain in the atmospheric river event last Sunday.

“Generally the trend this year is system over-performance and we are seeing that this morning in North Bay where we continue to get light rain,” said Walbrun.

The next storm system is expected to arrive on Monday morning, move south towards the Central Coast on Monday afternoon and deliver light to moderate rainfall.

The weather service released forecast rainfall totals for the event on Monday: 0.5 to 1 inches in San Rafael, 0.25 to 0.50 inches in San Francisco and Half Moon Bay, and 0.1 to 0.25 inches in Livermore and San Jose .

From Tuesday to Wednesday afternoon it should be mild and dry. Another weak storm, similar in force to Monday, will increase the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall from Wednesday night to Thursday.

“I would describe it as a normal pattern with some chance of rain,” said Walbrun. “We don’t expect a lot of wind because there aren’t any strong systems. We don’t expect temperature fluctuations. They’ll come through quickly and bring some rain in the preseason. That’s good news.”

Drought is expected next weekend.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – Bring on the rain! ABC7 News meteorologist Drew Tuma says more wet weather is on the way to the Bay Area.

LIVE: Follow the rain with Live Doppler 7

“We are following a very wet week ahead of us. We had a storm movement late on Sunday night – that is now pushing east,” said Tuma. “The bigger picture? We’re quickly tracking our next storm on the horizon. That cold front will move in a series of storms from Tuesday night through Wednesday.”

Tuma’s AccuWeather forecast shows rain and light showers in the area for the next six days.

On Tuesday, the Bay Area will hit a 1 on the storm exposure scale, followed by more rain on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Bay Area 2 will be on the Storm Impact Scale by Sunday.

RELATED: The ABC7 News Storm Impact Scale Explained

“Most of this rain will likely fall from Friday to Sunday. These are sums that we usually see in the middle of winter. If those numbers come into play, it would end our fire season, ”Tuma tweeted.

Here an atmospheric river could flow through the Bay Area

Tuma, who has been following the wet weather hour by hour, says the next storm is expected around 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

“So Wednesday morning is going to be a pretty wet morning to commute. Look at the next seven days – we’ll see several storms approaching,” said Tuma.

The strongest storm is expected to hit the region over the weekend with downpours and gusty winds, added Tuma.

You can’t come to a vaccination center? San Francisco will bring the COVID-19 vaccine into residents’ homes, workplaces and private events through a new program called “Vax to You,” health officials said this week.

The mobile vaccine unit has been operational since February, delivering 6,000 doses to people in vulnerable populations who may have difficulty getting to locations, such as senior citizens in care facilities and the homeless. Now anyone in groups of five to twelve, anywhere, can get Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, or Pfizer vaccines for free and by appointment.

The program comes as the city pushes to increase vaccination rates as the number of COVID-19 cases rises, Mayor London Breed told. 84 percent of San Franciscans have at least their first dose, but there is still a void to fill in black and Latino communities – only 64 percent of the black population and 74 percent of Latinos received their first shot.

“We have to make sure these communities get the vaccine because what we are seeing now, with nearly 100 people in the hospital, most of those people are African American and Latino,” Breed said at a press conference at the Sheba Piano Lounge.

Breed said we are in the “ninth inning” of the pandemic, and the recent surge in the Delta variant means we will have to limit ourselves to vaccinations and wearing masks for a little longer.

“Just because we’re sick of COVID-19, just because we’re sick of all the rules and regulations and being told what to do, just because we’re sick of it doesn’t mean we’re sick of it,” Breed said. “It’s not gone because we want it to be gone. So that means that we have to do more. “

Although there have been cases of vaccinated populations lately, the city’s health director Dr. Grant Colfax that this is not a good time to be unvaccinated. Getting the vaccine could be life or death, he said.

“It can make all the difference whether you spend a few days at home in bed or a few weeks in the intensive care unit,” said Colfax. “So very important that people are vaccinated.”

Residents can schedule appointments Tuesday through Saturday by visiting sf.gov/vaxtoyou.
