Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took aim at San Francisco, calling the city a “dumpster fire” while expressing fears about what would happen if companies there relocated to Florida.

“There is cause for concern,” DeSantis said during an event Monday. “Texas would have all these companies moved from California over the years. So you’d have companies move from San Francisco to Austin, and they’d bring hundreds of employees with them. And those employees would vote the exact same way they voted that turned San Francisco into the dumpster fire that it is.”

DNC CHAIR JAIME HARRISON CALLS FLORIDA GOV. DESANTIS ‘THE LITTLE DEVIL’

DeSantis expressed fears that California voters could begin moving to Florida, saying they fail to make the connection between “leftist” policies and the problems they left behind.

“It’s like the leftism, they will not draw the connection between their leftist ideology and the destruction that’s all around them,” DeSantis said. “It’s a problem because I do think there’s a class of voters who would come to Florida, and they would continue to vote the same way.”

The Republican governor’s comments come as many high-profile companies and entrepreneurs in the technology industry have either expressed interest in, or already have, moved from California to Texas and Florida.

Among the most high-profile movers was Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who moved from California to Texas last year and has publicly floated the idea of moving Tesla’s headquarters with him. While a Tesla move to Texas hasn’t happened yet, the company has invested in a large facility close to Austin and appears poised to make Texas a priority.

"It’s soul is the same," he says of Austin today, "and that’s heartening, despite all the change.”"/>

ANALYSIS / OPINION:

Forget what most pundits have to say about last week’s dismissal that did not remove California Governor Gavin Newsom. Some Democrats think because Newsom was running on an anti-Trump platform that will bring the party success or less harm in the next two elections.

You are wrong. The real story is the slow but accelerating exodus from California to states with lower or no state taxes. That mass exit likely reduced the number of people who might have voted to oust Newsom. Add to this the rising cost of almost everything, including gasoline. At nearly $ 6 a gallon at some gas stations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles, California has the highest average price for gasoline in the nation.

There are other forces at work too.

James Freeman wrote in the Wall Street Journal last week: “California has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, and the state has the largest unprotected homeless in the country. Those who believe Sacramento couldn’t be more reluctant to create job creation should consider that the Tax Foundation has ranked the Golden State as home to the second worst tax climate in the country … Newsom (s) victory gives California a chance to conquer New Jersey’s crown . “

A report from the Hoover Institution / Stanford University found that people are leaving the state even faster than in previous years. Most critically, California lost 74 corporate headquarters in just the first six months of this year. This contrasts with 62 companies that had moved throughout 2020.

Where you go? Especially in Texas, where there is no state tax, gas prices are much lower and you can buy a home (depending on where you live) at prices well below many areas in California.

If you believe this is due to the pandemic, the researchers used data from 2018 to show the three-year exodus. The San Francisco Bay Area accounted for five of the ten states with the highest number of company departures. A total of 47 companies left.

According to Hoover, “765 commercial establishments left California in the boom years of 2018 and 2019. This exodus does not count Charles Schwab’s announcement that he will be leaving San Francisco this year. It also does not include the estimated 13,000 companies that left the country between 2009 and 2016. “

The economic and other benefits to Texas and the company’s employees who have moved are enormous. According to Hoover, 114 of the 265 known California companies have relocated their headquarters in the past three years.

The foreseeable reasons are high taxes, high cost of living, energy prices and regulations. California has become a one-party state as too many people continue to rely on the government to do things the government never expected. Appeals for independence are over, replaced by excessive dependence on the government as a nanny state.

It is hoped that those who leave California will not be liberals taking their politics and the endorsement of failed programs to Texas and other states with more favorable business conditions.

Unfortunately, no one can escape the long arm of Washington, which under the Biden administration apparently wants to raise taxes to a new level and let us be forgotten. California is a great example of where the harm is leading to businesses and individuals.

It is amazing that in just 50 years California has shifted from Ronald Reagan’s financially conservative policies to Gavin Newsom’s democratic catastrophe.

From Soumya Karlamangla

New York Times

If the candidates fighting to succeed Gavin Newsom can agree on one thing, it is that too many Californians are fleeing the state.

At the start of her campaign, Caitlyn Jenner announced that another private plane owner was “packing up his hangar” for Arizona because he couldn’t stand to see more homeless people. Kevin Paffrath, a YouTube star who runs a Democrat, began his candidacy by giving reasons to trade “broken” California for Florida’s greener pastures.

In a recent debate, Republican candidate Kevin Faulconer said that when you name a state, Californians go there, any state.

Sure, there is some truth to what is known as the “California Exodus”: More Californians are moving to other states than from any other part of the country. But this is by no means a new trend – it has been the case for over 30 years.

And while California’s population declined slightly over the past year and the state lost a seat in Congress, it wasn’t because of sudden mass migration to states like Texas and Idaho.

Our stopped population growth was mainly due to falling birth rates and international immigration, as well as a high number of deaths from COVID-19, as reported by my colleague Shawn Hubler.

Even so, during the discussion, I wondered where Californians end up settling down when they leave. So I cracked the numbers.

More than 653,000 Californians moved to another state in 2019, while about 480,000 people moved here from other parts of the country, according to data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. (The 2020 numbers are not available, but analysis of other 2020 datasets has produced similar results.)

These were the top destinations for Californians leaving:

Texas (82,235 people in Texas had moved from California last year).

Arizona (59,713).

Nevada (47,322).

Washington (46,791).

Oregon (37,927).

States Where You Would Most Like To Meet A Californian:

Nevada (three of Nevada’s 200 residents moved from California last year).

Idaho.

Oregon.

Arizona.

Hawaii.

These are the states that new Californians have moved here from most frequently:

New York (37,567 Californians had lived in New York last year).

Texas (37,063).

Washington (31,882).

Arizona (28,226).

Nevada (26,433).

For many Californians, the high cost of living makes staying here almost impossible, experts say. The average home price in Texas is $ 329,000, less than half what it is in the Golden State, according to Redfin, a real estate brokerage firm.

Eric McGhee, a senior fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California, told me that people moving to California are more likely to have an education, job, and higher income than those who move.

That suggests that high spending is responsible for the departures, but not high taxes as some claim, he said. California tax wealthier people much higher than those on lower incomes, he said.

“If those taxes were the motivation, you’d expect wealthy people to move out,” said McGhee, citing exceptions like Elon Musk, a freshman Texan. “By and large, these are not the people who are leaving the state.”

With all of the scramble over California’s no longer booming population, there is some evidence that we actually prefer it that way.

A poll published in July by the University of California at San Diego found that a fraction of Californians believe the state would benefit from continued population growth over the next decade.

A far higher proportion – more than one in three Californians – had a different opinion: California would be better off shrinking.

On Wednesday, Texas passed the strictest abortion law in the country, banning the procedure after six weeks of pregnancy. The new regulation amounts to an almost complete ban on abortion and forces clinics to turn away women on the first day.

Read the Times article on Texas law.

Texas already had some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, resulting in clinic closings. Texas has about 24 abortion clinics, up from about 40 before 2013 when the state imposed a previous round of regulation.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, a research group campaigning for the right to abortion, about 3 percent of women in California live in a county without an abortion clinic. In Texas, that figure was 43 percent before the new law.

SACRAMENTO (CBS / AP) – Just a week before she and 12 other US soldiers were killed in a suicide bombing, Sgt. Nicole Gee was cradling a baby in her arms at Kabul airport.

She posted the photo on Instagram and wrote, “I love my job.”

Sgt.Nicole Gee holds a baby at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. Sgt. Gee from Sacramento was killed in a bomb attack in Kabul, Afghanistan on Thursday. (U.S. Department of Defense via Twitter)

Gee, 23, of Sacramento was one of four Californians killed in the bombing of Kabul airport, where people were evacuated during the Taliban takeover. The blast killed 169 Afghans and 13 US soldiers, including 11 Marines.

Lance complete with Dylan Merola, 20, from Rancho Cucamonga; Complete Hunter Lopez, 22, from Indio; and Lance Cpl. Norco’s Kareem Mae’Lee Grant Nikoui was also killed.

Gee was a maintenance technician with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Sgt. Mallory Harrison, who lived with Gee for three years and called her a “forever sister” and best friend, wrote a moving account of the extent of her loss.

“I can’t quite describe the feeling I get when I force myself to go back to reality and think about how I’ll never see it again,” Harrison wrote on Facebook. “How her last breath was taken to do what she loved – to help people. … Then there was an explosion. And just like that, she’s gone. “

Gee’s Instagram page features another photo of her in work clothes holding a rifle next to a line of people going into the belly of a large transport plane. She wrote: “Escort evacuees to the bird.”

The social media account, which contains many selfies after a workout at the gym, lists their location as California, North Carolina, and “Somewhere Abroad”.

Photos show her on a camel in Saudi Arabia, in a bikini on a Greek island and with a beer in Spain. One from earlier this month in Kuwait shows her radiant with her meritorious promotion to sergeant.

Harrison said their generation of Marines hear war stories from veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, but they seem very aloof in the midst of boring missions until “the peaceful chariot you were on turns into … your friends, that never come home. “

Gee’s car was still in a parking lot at Camp Lejeune, and Harrison pondered over all the marines who had passed him while she was overseas without knowing who it belonged to.

“Some of them knew her. Some of them don’t, ”she said. “Everyone walked past it. The war stories, the casualties, the flag-hung coffins, the KIA wristbands and the heartache. It’s not that far away anymore. ”

OAKLAND (KPIX 5) – A poll by CBS News found that most Californians consider crime a major state issue, including more than two in three who they consider very important.

Crime is often a hot political issue, but how people see it often depends on their individual life experience. And now there are numbers to prove it.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: Cache Fire Destroys Dozen of Lake County Homes; 1,500 residents evacuated

CBS News commissioned a survey of 1,800+ Californians on major problems facing the state. Forest fires and the coronavirus topped the list with 77% and 72%, respectively.

“But crime is at the top, very close to the Californian hot topics at 68%,” said Anthony Salvanto, CBS News Elections and Surveys director.

Oakland is often in the news about crime problems, but even there there are differences in how people view the scale of the problem.

“I wouldn’t say crime is a bigger problem here than anywhere I’ve ever been,” said Aidan Thompson-McTaggart, a college student from Oakland. “That doesn’t bother me much.”

• MORE RESULTS: CBS News YouGov Poll – THE CALIFORNIA DREAM

Shawn Granberry is a lifetime resident of Oakland. “Crime is definitely an issue in Oakland,” Granberry told KPIX 5. “Anyone who says crime is not an issue in Oakland doesn’t live in Oakland.”

Granberry said Oakland has become a city of the haves and the dispossessed, and young blacks don’t feel they have a great economic future. At 72%, this feeling is strongly reflected in the survey results on crime prevention.

“The most important thing many Californians are saying is that more economic opportunities for people would help reduce crime,” said Salvanto. “Similarly, many Californians said that more mental health services could help.”

Mental health services scored 68% in response to crime prevention. Collin Vaughan agrees, saying it made a huge difference to him and likely saved his life.

“Because mental health treatment has changed my life,” said the 23-year-old. “Without the drugs, the therapists, everything … I would be dead now.”

About half of the survey said fewer guns would help, and the other half would like more money for the police. But the relationship between the police and the Oakland black community has not always been good.

“They don’t live here, they don’t go through church. They just drive their cars and show up when something happens, ”Granberry said. “You don’t know the community.”

The survey shows that 50% of those questioned feel “protected” by the police and 8% feel “threatened”. But 31% feel a mixture of both, like Tara Jones, who, as an African American, is not afraid of the police, but rather for the safety of her teenage son.

“When you live it, it changes the way you move, how you act, how you can actually enjoy the world,” said Jones. “Someone from a gated community probably enjoys the world very differently than my 6’8” and 18-year-old son. “

MORE NEWS: San Jose Reid-Hillview Airport will be closed due to lead levels following the vote by district regulators

Jones said there is no escaping the threat in her neighborhood. Crime seems to be a universal problem, but with individual implications.

People who live in the scenic woodlands of Northern California faced a weekend of fear as forest fires threatened to devastate thousands of homes.

The Dixie Fire, which burned much of the gold rush town of Greenville, threatened more than 10,000 buildings in the northern Sierra Nevada. It had engulfed an area larger than the size of New York City.

It was the largest current wildland fire in the country and the third largest in recorded California history, according to the State Department of Fire and Forestry Protection.

Wind-blown flames destroyed dozens of homes and most of downtown Greenville on Wednesday and Thursday, and also badly damaged Canyondam, a hamlet of about three dozen residents. The fire reached Chester, but crews managed to protect homes and businesses there, officials said.

Charlene Mays kept her Chester gas station open as long as possible and urged tired firefighters not to apologize for the ash trail their boots had left on the ground. But when the small town on the northwest shore of Lake Almanor lost power, Mays decided it was time for them to leave.

She ran home to get a box of valuables, including her husband’s class ring and some jewelry. The smoke was so thick it was hard to breathe. Lumps of ash broke when they hit the floor, making a sound like broken glass.

That was two days ago. Since then, Mays has lived in the car park at Lassen College in Susanville. Her husband stayed behind to service some of the water tanks that the firefighters were using. It’s just her, a Miniature Pinscher Chihuahua named Jedidiah and a Pit Bull named Bear.

Her house was still standing on Friday, but her fate was tied to the direction of the wind. She wasn’t alone.

“I have probably 30 of my regular customers here,” she said.

The Dixie Fire, named for the street it began on, now covers an area of 1,760 square kilometers and was only 21% contained. No injuries or deaths were reported.

The weather at the fireplace on Saturday was expected to have higher humidity and calmer winds with temperatures in excess of 32 degrees Celsius instead of the 40 miles per hour (64 km / h) gusts recorded at the beginning of the week and three-digit highs.

Still, the fire and its neighboring fires, which were only a few hundred miles apart, posed an ongoing threat.

Heat waves and historic droughts related to climate change have made fighting forest fires in the American West difficult. Scientists say climate change has made the region much warmer and drier over the past 30 years, and the weather will continue to be more extreme and forest fires more frequent and more destructive.

Near the Klamath National Forest, firefighters kept an eye out for small communities evacuated on the trail of the antelope fire, which had previously ignited 30-meter-high flames as it blackened bone-dry grass, scrub and wood. It was only included 20%.

Farther northwest, around 500 homes scattered in and around Shasta-Trinity National Forest remained threatened by the Monument Fire and others by the McFarland Fire, both of which were triggered by thunderstorms last week, firefighters said.

About a two-hour drive south of the Dixie Fire, crews had encircled about a third of the River Fire that broke out near the city of Colfax on Wednesday and destroyed nearly 90 homes and other buildings. Evacuations for thousands of people in the Nevada and Placer counties were lifted Friday. Authorities said three people, including a firefighter, were injured.

Dale Huber went to the fire zone on Friday to check on his brother’s house, which was in ruins.

“It used to be a bunch of cool things, and now it’s just rubbish,” said Huber. “You can’t fix it. We can rip it out and start over or run away. I think he decided to rebuild here. “

Smoke from the fires covered central California and western Nevada, causing air quality to deteriorate to very unhealthy levels. Air quality warnings stretched across the San Joaquin Valley and into the San Francisco Bay Area, where residents were told to keep their windows and doors closed.

California is well on its way to surpassing the last year that had the worst fire season in recent recorded state history. Since the beginning of the year, more than 6,000 fires have destroyed more than 3,260 square kilometers of land – more than three times the losses for the same period in 2020, according to state fire numbers.

California’s raging forest fires were among more than 100 large, active fires that burned in 14 states, mostly in the west, where historic drought conditions have left the land ripe and ripe for ignition.
