In 2013, veteran documentary filmmaker Marc Shaffer was working on a film in San Francisco when he became captivated by the work of English photographer Eadweard Muybridge. The film, “American Jerusalem: Jews and the Making of San Francisco” that aired on PBS in 2014, used some of Muybridge’s photography.

It was then when Shaffer conceptualized the idea of ​​creating a film about Muybridge, who is considered to be the father of stop-motion photography.

“[Exposing Muybridge] tells the fantastical story of the pioneering 19th century motion photographer whose breakthrough photography influenced today’s cinema,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer will screen his 2021 film “Exposing Muybridge” at the Boulder International Film Festival this weekend. In Shaffer’s first visit to BIFF, he will be present for three screenings — two in Boulder and one in Longmont.

The film was brought to the attention of Robin Beeck, BIFF’s executive director, after festival staff member Sherri Fike saw “Exposing Muybridge” at a New York festival.

“’Exposing Muybridge’ is one of those films that engrosses you so much in the story that you forget you’re sitting in a movie theater,” Beeck said. “And when you leave the theater, you have to reorient yourself to place and time a little bit. That’s the sign of a great film and is why we selected it to bring to our audiences.”

Muybridge is famously known for capturing motion by taking photos of a running horse in each stage of its gallop, a photo sequence that helped set the tone of modern-day cinema. This sequence has been said to be the first time a photographer captured movement faster than the human eye can see.

“Aspects of his work, once understood, made you feel different about how you can trust the person behind the machine,” Shaffer said.

Among historians and professionals, the film also features Academy Award-winning actor Gary Oldman, a collector of Muybridge’s work.

“It’s like splitting the atom, it’s like discovering penicillin — it’s a monumental achievement,” Oldman says in the film, when talking about Muybridge’s discoveries.

Oldman also wrote, directed and starred in a 2016 biopic about Muybridge, “Flying Horse.”

“I wanted Gary Oldman in the film,” Shaffer said, “not because I wanted a celebrity plant, but because he had the capacity to speak on Muybridge’s life that others couldn’t.”

Shaffer began production of the film in 2019, after receiving funding, including a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

“The hardest part in making a film is the funding,” Shaffer said. “Getting approved for funding and trying to figure how much you’ll actually end up needing is the most difficult part.”

After nine years of work and two years of filming through a pandemic, “Exposing Muybridge”’ will now hit BIFF’s big screens. It will be screened in Boulder at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th St., at 3 pm Saturday and at eTown Hall, 1535 Spruce St., at 7:30 pm Sunday. It will be screened at Longmont Museum’s Stewart Auditorium, 400 Quail Road, at 5:15 pm Saturday.

“[Boulder International Film Festival staff] have been terrific and I’m really looking forward to being there and sharing our film,” Shaffer said.

UNION CITY (CBS SF) — The discovery of a hidden camera in a Starbucks bathroom in Union City led to the arrest of a registered sex offender on a series of charges, authorities said.

Union City police said Wednesday officers were called to investigate a camera inside a restroom at the Starbucks on the 32000 block of Dyer St. last month. Detectives identified the suspect as David Lista, 35, of Hayward who was convicted in 2008 of secretly videotaping girls at Mills High School, police said.

Lista – a plumber by trade – was arrested on August 30th and during a search of his home, investigators found more evidence of additional crimes including other hidden restroom cameras and child porn.

Lista was charged with illegal video taping, possession of child pornography, and possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Lista may have illegally videotaped unsuspecting victims who contracted his services, according to police. Anyone who may have hired Lista for plumbing or any home repair was urged to contact Union City police.

It was supposed to be a one-day trip to San Francisco for Alabama-based photographer Ashtynn Wilhite.

But almost all of the photos she took at a wedding were deleted after her car was broken into near the Painted Ladies on September 21. The disaster, which occurred between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., cost his camera equipment around $ 15,000.

“We had such a phenomenal day there and suddenly it was just torn away,” Wilhite told SFGATE. “It was so sad.”

Her clients, Alex and Tyler Hammel, got married in Birmingham, Alabama earlier this month. The couple offered a $ 2,000 reward for getting their photos back. Wilhite, on the other hand, also gave a $ 5,000 reward for their laptop and the hard drive returned.

The photographer was supposed to be doing an engagement shoot for another couple in San Francisco when the disaster struck. They agreed to come to Alamo Square for the shoot after changing clothes and taking photos in San Francisco.

Wilhite put the camera equipment she helped bring with her in the back seat of the car as the trunk was already occupied. She covered it with sheets and went to the nearby Alamo Square for the shoot.

“I saw the glass, but it didn’t really hit me,” she said. “I thought something was broken. I got out of the car and the window was broken. Then it struck me that someone stole our equipment. “

The photographer said she was “immediately shocked” and cried when she fell to her knees.

Wilhite said she alerted the police and had been instructed to contact the 311 and file a report online. It was the same instruction she received when she went to SFPD headquarters to file the report in person.

“Things like that don’t really happen where we come from,” she shared. “If something like this happens, the police would be more interested in helping. But in San Francisco it happens every day, it sucks. There’s really nothing they can do, it’s such a big city. “
