A candidate running in November’s election for the board governing City College of San Francisco posted controversial views condemning critical race theory, often referred to as CRT, in a since-deleted tweet.

The revelation on Twitter of a prior comment by board trustee candidate Marie Hurabiell is now prompting a Democratic club in the city to reopen discussions on their endorsement for her, the club’s president told KQED.

In the tweet, which was published in May 2021, Hurabiell wrote, “CRT was a tactic used by Hitler and the KKK.” These were not her words; Rather, Hurabiell was amplifying the words of a speaker at a school board meeting in Loudoun County, Va.

Then, Hurabiell added, in her own words, “Gratitude to this strong and passionate parent for fighting this dangerous nonsense.”

Critical race theory is at an academic school of thought teaching how racism is baked into the systems and policies of the United States. It entered the national spotlight last year as a bogeyman of conservatives looking to lambaste local school boards. Striking critical race theory from school campuses is among a number of efforts by conservatives to reform school boards across the country over the past year, including banning books promoting racial equity and LGBTQ+ themes.

Outrage against CRT is usually reserved for screeds on ultraconservative websites like Breitbart, or on President Donald Trump’s social network, Truth Social. It’s certainly not an everyday talking point in liberal San Francisco.

The Virginia school board meeting took place amid heated rhetoric against critical race theory from then-gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin. After he won the race, Youngkin issued an executive order to end “inherently divisive concepts,” which he billed as a way to end critical race theory from being taught in K-12 schools.

Fanning flames against critical race theory was central to Republicans in his race, but in Democratic San Francisco, Hurabiell may have found a sympathetic ear for those views from people wishing to recall several local school board members.

In the deleted tweet, Hurabiell tagged numerous accounts, including an account of the San Francisco Board of Education recall called @recallsfboe that belongs to a group now called the SF Guardians. That group worked to successfully recall school board commissioners Gabriela López, Alison Collins and Faauuga Moliga.

“I think it was a really stupid thing that I said,” Hurabiell told KQED. “I think it was really stupid that I retweeted it and I’m extremely apologetic for that.”

Hurabiell said she believes systemic racism is a “real problem” in the country.

“In my life I have not spent a lot of time digging into CRT, but I’m trying to understand it better now,” she said. “I’m always open to being wrong.”

When asked if she usually calls things she doesn’t know about “dangerous nonsense,” she responded, “I don’t routinely talk about things that I’m not terribly familiar with.”

Hurabiell is an eighth-generation San Franciscan and has been an attorney since the 1990s. She also serves on the Georgetown University Board of Regents. An ardent supporter of the recall campaigns of the three San Francisco Board of Education members and District Attorney Chesa Boudin, she also is a member of the nonprofit Stop Crime SF, which was started by Board of Supervisors candidate Joel Engardio.

Adele Failes-Carpenter, political director for the City College of San Francisco faculty union, AFT Local 2121, said Hurabiell’s views are out of step with the college’s mission.

“We need public education to keep our commitment to ending racism at the center of our work,” she said. “Anyone who is participating in open, reactionary attacks on critical examinations of the history of race and racism in this country is not in a position to help us do that work.”

Hurabiell has been endorsed by at least two local Democratic clubs in their race so far this year: the Eastern Neighborhoods Democratic Club and the United Democratic Club. These endorsements can be especially key in political races that don’t have as much funding, like down-ballot college board races.

When reached by text, Eastern Neighborhoods Democratic Club President Bruce Agid said he was not aware of Hurabiell’s tweet about critical race theory, and that he would discuss her views with his club’s board. Bobak Esfandiari, president of the United Democratic Club, did not answer texts inquiring about the club’s endorsement of Hurabiell.

Failes-Carpenter said the clubs should reconsider their endorsements.

“I would ask them to stand by students and by public educators that have committed to fighting racism within our public institutions and within our educational institutions, by not endorsing and supporting candidates who are openly hostile to anti-racist analyzes and anti-racist teaching, ” she said.

The endorsement of Hurabiell by two Democratic clubs may be an odd choice for another reason: For two decades Hurabiell was a Republican. She was appointed to the Presidio Trust Board of Directors, where she served for three years, by former President Donald Trump in 2018.

Records from the San Francisco Department of Elections show she was a registered Republican in San Francisco from at least 2000, which is as far back as more easily accessible records could reveal. She changed her party preference to Democrat on Aug. 18, 2022 — six days after she filed paperwork to run for the City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees.

San Francisco Democratic Party Chair Honey Mahogany said the organization’s bylaws do not specify how long someone needs to be registered as a Democrat before a Democratic club can endorse them. Furthermore, Democratic clubs are allowed to endorse someone of any party in nonpartisan races, like for City College’s Board of Trustees.

Hurabiell would have had an uphill battle running for office advertising herself as a Republican in San Francisco, where the party is widely disfavored in local elections.

San Francisco has no elected Republicans in office. The last Republican elected in San Francisco was the late James Fang, who formerly sat on the BART Board of Directors. He was first elected in 1990 and served until his defeat in 2014.

Hurabiell said she changed her party registration after joining a group called “No Labels,” and finding moderate Democrats who agreed with her on issues, but disliked her being known as a Republican Party member.

“We just wanted to solve problems. We just wanted to work together and effect positive change in our community,” she said.

The San Francisco Chronicle praised Hurabiell during her 2020 run for the college board — which she lost — endorsing her for “fiscal savvy.” Indeed, in her interview with KQED, she professed a desire to set City College on a fiscally solvent path, and expressed concern that too many classes that are still being offered are under-enrolled.

When Hurabiell said she didn’t know much about CRT, we asked whether she believed in other progressive causes that may be valued at City College, like the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I’m not sure I fully understand that movement,” she said, repeating her same explanation for having no stance on CRT. While the death of George Floyd left her “disgusted and devastated,” she said, “I want to say yes to that, but again I’m not sure I understand enough about it.”

Responding to Hurabiell’s repeated claims of not understanding both CRT and the Black Lives Matter movement, Jane Kim, state director of the California Working Families Party — who championed and won free City College tuition during her time on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors — bristled.

“Listen, it is one thing for an individual in our society or to say that they don’t know a lot about critical race theory or Black Lives Matter, but if you are a candidate that is running to represent over 800,000 residents of San Francisco , many of whom are people of color, then I think that it is your job to understand those things,” Kim said. “If you don’t understand the Black community, the Latino community, API community, then you shouldn’t be running for office.”

MOUNTAIN VIEW (KPIX) – Mountain View is just one of the cities in the Bay Area that moves forward with a guaranteed or universal basic income program. That was the main focus of the rally on Saturday, but there was also talk of a different policy.

“I think we’re seeing good results in other cities, so it was time for us to try it here,” said Margaret Abe-Koga of Mountain View City Council.

With $ 1,000,000 worth of funds from the American Relief Act, Mountain View is on track to become the newest city to experiment with a universal basic income, in this case, paying a family $ 500 a month of or below 30% of the median median income. The people behind the idea largely attribute it to a person.

“I was inspired by Andrew Yang,” said Abe-Koga. “I was an early yang ganger and that was because of his UBI concept.”

“We always had the money and we also know that people will spend it on food, fuel and a roof over their heads,” Yang told the crowd.

For the former presidential candidate, that rally seemed a bit like a winning lap in some ways. From Oakland to Marin to Santa Clara County, UBI programs are gaining traction. State Senator Dave Cortese was at his side. Now rated nationwide with 54 percent approval, this is an idea with many fans.

“It is exciting to be here to continue the basic income movement that the majority of Americans today know is common sense,” said Yang.

“The Universal Basic Income makes perfect sense,” said rally participant Doug Ridley. “In fact, it’s so obvious that almost no explanation is required.”

Of course, there is resistance, and the early programs use grants and philanthropic funds to avoid legal challenges. Supporters say the UBI is the future now that it has political support. On the subject of politics, Yang also spoke of a system that he calls “leading us nowhere” and the possibility of creating a third political party.

“I am very happy to try to provide a middle ground for Americans who do not see themselves represented in our politics,” said Yang. “Because our politics are so extreme and polarized on both sides.”

As for Mountain View’s efforts on Basic Income, they will be speaking out on Tuesday evening, specifically which families should be prioritized when the program launches.

FAIRFAX (KPIX) – Holly Baade is one of 46 candidates who are running for the job of Governor Gavin Newsom in the upcoming recall election.

She has voted for Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders in the past and is not a supporter of Donald Trump, but she is an anti-mask and calls the COVID-19 vaccines “poison”.

In the quiet town of Fairfax, just 20 miles north of San Francisco, Baade believes her views are widespread.

“We are in a state of emergency because we are literally under siege by our government,” said Baade.

Baade wants to fight homelessness, advocates a universal basic income and believes that the strategy to fight forest fires has not worked.

She runs a private community center called Metacine, where children don’t have to wear masks.

“We abuse children by asking them to wear masks when they should have a formative interaction with their parents, teachers and each other,” said Baade.

Republican candidates, including former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, businessman John Cox, and others, are rejecting masked mandates.

Larry Elder calls Mandate an “attack on freedom” and has vowed to fight all vaccine requirements as well.

“They flatter people out there who, for some reason, already have this mindset, and I have no interest in or supporting these people,” said Doug Lightle, a Fairfax resident.

“These guys want to put us on the same COVID cliff every night that we see in Florida, Texas and Missouri,” Gov.Newsom told KPIX on Thursday.

What makes Baade stand out in a crowded field is that she is running as a democrat who is against mask and vaccination requirements.

“These tyrannical mandates must be ended and those who have imposed them should be held accountable,” said Baade.

South Bay Democratic candidate Kevin Paffrath criticizes the way Newsom handled bans but not the mandates.

“We need leaders who have a clear message, and Governor Newsom has acted consistently and cleared this pandemic so we can return to a thriving economy,” said San Francisco-based Diyana Dobberteen.

Baade supports more funds for social services to combat homelessness, considers the criminal justice system to be flawed and supports more funds for the police and fire services.

SACRAMENTO (AP) – The official list of candidates for the recall of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom in California remained unclear on Sunday.

Foreign Secretary spokeswoman Jenna Dresner said all candidates who did not qualify were told why, but a spokesperson for Elder’s campaign said they had not received any notification. Spokeswoman Ying Ma said Elder submitted voter signatures from three counties and the campaign assumes the state has not finished adding them. Candidates must pay an application fee of nearly $ 4,200 or submit 7,000 signatures.

Although Ma said the campaign expects the issue to be resolved on Monday, Dresner said “any changes to the list at this point would be made by a court order.”

When Elder announced his candidacy on July 12, his years on talk radio and appearances on Fox News immediately made him one of the most prominent Republicans in the field and was seen as a candidate who could further inspire GOP voters. While Elder is likely to excite many voters, most Republicans are unlikely to stay home if he’s not on the list, said Jack Pitney, professor of political science at Claremont McKenna College.

“I think the Republicans will show up because they hate Newsom, not because they are special fans of one of the replacement candidates,” Pitney said.

Among other candidates was former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s campaign to argue with state officials over whether he could be listed as the city’s “retired” mayor, and YouTube inventor Kevin Paffrath said he was planning to shut down his YouTube -Get nicknames on the ballot paper. Meanwhile, Caitlyn Jenner, the Olympian-turned-reality TV star, was reportedly in Australia filming a reality show, despite tweeting on Friday that she and her campaign team are “in full swing”.

The list of 41 candidates published by the state on Saturday lacked the verve of the more than 100 candidates who ran for California’s last revocation of a governor in 2003. But it did encompass a range of candidates from anonymous to famous, including an entertainer who featured on billboards in Los Angeles in the 1980s and others with flashy names like Deputy Sheriff Denver Stoner and Nickolas Wildstar who saw himself as a musician / entrepreneur / Father performs.

The list includes 21 Republicans, eight Democrats, one libertarian, nine Independents and two Greens members. Elections begin next month by mail and the official election date is September 14th.

Each candidate is listed with a job title or other description, but cannot use the word “former”. Faulconer’s campaign called for him to be listed as a “retired” mayor of San Diego, which state officials are now denying, Faulconer’s spokesman John Burke said. He left the office in 2020, and a reference to his previous role would help improve his name identification.

Paffrath said he plans to sue after he was denied access to the ballot as Kevin “Meet Kevin” Paffrath, which includes his YouTube name. He noted that another candidate was admitted as Chauncey “Slim” Killens, who lists himself as a retired correctional officer.

No democrat with political stature has chosen to run for office. Polls have shown Newsom is well positioned to win. But should he lose in any excitement, there would be no established Democrat among the replacement candidates, potentially paving the way for a Republican to take over the office.

Voters will be sent a ballot with two questions: Should Newsom be recalled and who should replace him? If more than half of the voters answer “yes” to the first question, whoever receives the most votes on the list of possible successors will be the new governor of the nation’s most populous state. With numerous candidates and no clear front runner, it is possible that someone with less than 25% of the votes will win.

The urge to oust Newsom is largely rooted in frustration at the prolonged school and business closings during the pandemic that changed the daily lives of millions of Californians. But many voters are ignoring it, and no new candidates emerged on Saturday who appeared to have the potential to re-order the course of the race.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the candidates who have submitted the required documents include:

Kevin Paffrath, 29, who provides financial advice to his 1.7 million YouTube subscribers. The Democrat says his lack of “political baggage” is a good thing. His proposals include building underground tunnels for new roads and lowering income taxes.

Angelyne, the only candidate with a name on the ballot is an entertainer who rose to fame in Los Angeles in the 1980s by buying billboards to promote her name and image. It is listed as “no party preference” and its platform includes an annual masquerade ball where citizens dress up like the governor, an official foam bath day and “rehab for politicians”.

Jeff Hewitt, 68, is a supervisor in Riverside County. He wrote in The Orange County Register that he was taking part in the race because “this state no longer has dreams, encourages ideas, or solves problems.” He argues that the state needs a new approach and is acting as a libertarian.

Joel Ventresca, 69, is a Democrat but says he is further to the left than Newsom, whom he called a “corporate, establishment, inside Democrat”. Ventresca’s premier campaign platform is free “cradle to grave” health care and education for everyone in California. He retired from San Francisco International Airport in 2018, where he held multiple roles.

Sam Gallucci, 60, Republican, is a former technology manager and senior pastor at Embrace! Church in Oxnard, California. He also leads service to vulnerable women and children as well as migrants. In his technical career, he rose through the corporate ranks to become executive vice president and general manager of software company PeopleSoft, which Oracle acquired in 2004 for $ 10.3 billion.

Caitlyn Jenner, 71, is a lifelong Republican trying to turn her celebrity into a surprise win. She won the men’s decathlon gold medal at the 1976 Olympics, married into the Kardashian family and became reality TV stars with them, and came out as transgender in 2015. She describes herself as a social liberal tax conservative. But she has shown herself to be prone to slip-ups in interviews and has not released any significant policy proposals.

John Cox, 66, was the Republican candidate for governorship in 2018, losing to Newsom in a landslide. This time, the multimillionaire businessman has shown showman instincts, fighting both a Kodiak bear and a giant ball of garbage. He has been looking for public office for a long time. He has sought numerous political offices, including the US House of Representatives and the US Senate, as well as the President.

Doug Ose, 66, is a multimillionaire businessman and former Republican Congressman who represented a district in the Sacramento area from 1999 to 2005. He calls Sacramento broken, refers to the homeless crisis, rising gas taxes and rising crime rates. In 2018 he briefly ran for governor.

Jacqueline McGowan, 46, a Democrat, is a former stockbroker who turned to reform cannabis policy. She rushes to draw attention to what she calls a legal cannabis market crisis. It would lower pot taxes and push communities that have not established local markets to open the door to legal sales.

Kevin Faulconer, 54, is a Republican who was twice elected mayor of democratic San Diego and has long been a potential candidate for the entire state because of his centrist credentials in heavily democratic California. He has presented himself as a problem solver, touting his work in keeping homeless camps off the streets while they spread freely in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Steve Chavez Lodge, 62, is a retired homicide detective and a small business owner. He gained notoriety when he became engaged to reality TV personality Vicki Gunvalson, who appeared on the Real Housewives of Orange County for 15 years. The Republican says, “California is completely broken” and promises to “get the government out of our lives … and out of our wallets.” He has also served on local government commissions.

Kevin Kiley, 36, is a Sacramento area Republican MP who turned out to be a favorite among GOP volunteers who collected petition signatures for the recall. He made a name for himself as a strong conservative and one of Newsom’s most vocal critics.
