JAN 29 EAGLES BEAT 49ERS IN NFC CHAMPIONSHIP The Washington Commanders will watch their NFC East rival play in Super Bowl LVII in two weeks time.

The Philadelphia Eagles have claimed the first spot in the Super Bowl after a 31-7 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers’ game was defined by injuries to quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson as the Eagles cruised to a win thanks to 148 rushing yards.

The Eagles will play the winner of the Cincinnati Bengals vs. Kansas City Chiefs game.

JAN 29 BIENIEMY WAIT? Are the Commanders dragging their feet? Or just patiently playing by the rules?

Coach Ron Rivera has yet to hire an offensive coordinator to replace the fired Scott Turner, and the AFC title game on Sunday may be one reason why. The Commanders have put in a request for permission to interview Chiefs assistant Eric Bieniemy and according to NFL Network he’s “emerged as a potential key candidate” in D.C.

Bieniemy, who is also on the insources say. He also was request list of the Jets, Titans and Ravens, will work today in Chiefs vs. Bengals, after which Washington hopes to get a visit.

JAN 28 FOSTER COMEBACK? Former Washington Commanders linebacker Reuben Foster hasn’t played in the NFL since 2018, but he’s trying another comeback …

This time in the USFL.

Last time we checked in on Foster, the Seattle Seahawks hosted him for a summer workout. That didn’t work out, but Foster, now 28, this week will sign with the USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers in another comeback attempt.

He was taken in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, despite an injury risk, and then in 2018 was dealt a two-game suspension after committing a weapons offense and a misdemeanor drug offense. Weeks later, Foster was arrested for domestic violence and the 49ers cut him shortly after

In 2019, Washington claimed Foster off waivers shortly after he was cut by San Francisco, but he never played a down as a member of the organization as during his first practice in 2019, Foster suffered a torn ACL and was placed on the injured reserve list. Still recovering from the injury a season later, he was placed on the PUP list at the beginning of training camp in 2020 … and there wasn’t much positive movement there before he was released.

JAN 20 LENO NAMED FINALIST FOR ALAN PAGE COMMUNITY AWARD Washington Commanders offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr. is one of five finalists for the NFLPA Alan Page Community Award, the “highest honor” the Players Association can give to someone.

Leno, along with Damar Hamlin (Buffalo Bills), Jonathan Jones (New England Patriots), Darren Waller (Las Vegas Raiders) and Devin White (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) are on the shortlist for the award.

Each player will receive a $10,000 donation to their charity of choice. The winner of the award will be announced on Feb. 8.

JAN 19 INTERNATIONAL HOSTS ANNOUNCED FOR 2023 The NFL announced that the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots will each play international games during the 2023 regular season.

The Bills and the Titans will each play a game at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Jaguars will also being playing in the UK. And the 2023 season will also see the Chiefs and Patriots both play regular-season games in Germany.

The Commanders are scheduled to play the Patriots on the “road” next season, meaning that the game could take place in Germany. If the Commanders are tabbed to play the Patriots in Germany, it would mark just the second time Washington would head overseas for a game.

JAN 16 COWBOYS ELIMINATE TOM BRADY, BUCCANEERS The NFC East has three teams in the Divisional Round after the Dallas Cowboys beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-14 Monday night at Raymond James Stadium.

With the win, Tom Brady’s season comes to an end before he hits free agency this spring.

The Cowboys play the San Francisco 49ers Sunday night at 6:30 p.m.

JAN 15 NFC EAST RIVALS TO MEET IN DIVISIONAL ROUND The New York Giants are on to the Divisional Round after beating the Minnesota Vikings 31-24 Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

With the win, the Giants now face the Philadelphia Eagles next week in the Divisional Round.

The Dallas Cowboys are set to play Monday night against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to land the fourth and final spot in the next round.

JAN 14 NFL WILD CARD SATURDAY The beginning of the NFL playoffs kicked off with a bang Saturday.

After the San Francisco 49ers came back from trailing at halftime to win by three scores, the Jacksonville Jaguars managed a 27-point comeback (third-largest in NFL history) to beat the Los Angeles Chargers at home.

The lopsided start in the first half came thanks to five Jaguars turnovers … including four Trevor Lawrence interceptions.

But … the Chargers found a way to blow their four-touchdown lead to lose 31–30 in Jacksonville.

Lawrence rebounded by throwing three second-half touchdown passes to pace the comeback for Jacksonville.

The 49ers will host the highest-remaining NFC playoff team, while the Jaguars await their opponent based off of Sunday’s results.

JAN 13 JEREMY REAVES NAMED ALL-PRO Washington Commanders defensive back Jeremy Reaves was named as a First-Team All-Pro on special teams.

Reaves, 26, is a fifth-year pro who hadn’t made the 53-man roster out of training camp in any season before this year. However, his talents were recognized by Ron Rivera and the coaching staff during training camp as he made the final team and balled out as one of the top special teams players in the league.

Reaves was also named to the NFC Pro Bowl team and a Players’ Selection First-Team All-Pro.

JAN 9 WASHINGTON SIGNS FUTURES The Washington Commanders announced that they’ve signed nine players to futures contracts on Monday for the 2023 season. The list:

CB Troy Apke
DE William Bradley-King
WR Alex Erickson
CB DaMarcus Fields
QB Jake Fromm
G Nolan Laufenberg
WR Kyric McGowan
T Aaron Monteiro
G Keaton Sutherland

Fromm, 24, was a fifth-round pick by the Bills out of Georgia in 2020. Buffalo waived him coming out of the preseason and in 2021, he got on the field with the Giants. He’s spent time on the Commanders practice squad since then.

JAN 7 SCHERFF, JAGS MAKE PLAYOFFS The Washington Commanders may not be in the playoffs this year, but a familiar face will be.

After the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Tennessee Titans Saturday night, offensive lineman Brandon Scherff punched his ticket to the playoffs. He started every game for the Jaguars this season.

Scherff played for Washington from 2015-21, and now makes his third playoff appearance.

JAN 5 HAMLIN AWAKE Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is no longer in a coma, awake and showing more signs of improvement, according to teammate Kaiir Elam.

Hamlin has been in the hospital since Monday night after suffering cardiac arrest in the MNF game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

JAN 4 SAM HOWELL STARTS Despite earlier reports Washington would start Taylor Heinicke at quarterback in Sunday’s season finale, it was rookie Sam Howell seen taking first reps when practice began on Wednesday.

Furthermore, when the passers and receiver broke away to throw routes, Howell was throwing to starters like Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, and Jahan Dotson.

Ron Rivera confirmed in his press conference that Howell would start the Week 18 finale against the Dallas Cowboys.

JAN 4 WASHINGTON COMMANDERS GOING BACK TO HEINICKE One week after quarterback Carson Wentz replaced Taylor Heinicke as the team’s starter, it’s being reported Washington is reversing course.

While Heinicke is expected to be the starter, the same report says rookie Sam Howell will also get playing time, making his NFL debut in the final week of the regular season.

As of now, the team has yet to confirm.

All of this would suggest that

Carson Wentz is getting benched (again) … even as coach Ron Rivera is saying he has “no regrets” about the fateful decision to start Wentz in last week’s playoff-hopes-killing loss to the Browns.

The 7-8-1 Commanders are probably wise to begin the experiment with the rookie Howell, as there is little else to be accomplished here against 12-4 Dallas, which is playoff-bound and still trying to win the NFC East.

JAN 3 NFL HAS NO ANSWER FOR BILLS-BENGALS RESUMPTION The NFL released a statement Tuesday afternoon in regards to the continuation of the Buffalo Bills vs. Cincinnati Bengals game.

All Week 18 games will currently be played as scheduled.

JAN 2 MNF SUSPENDED AFTER SCARY FALL The Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals are currently suspending play after one of the scariest moments in NFL history.

Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field with 5:58 left in the first quarter.

There is no timetable for when the game will return to action.

JAN 2 COMMANDERS PLAY COWBOYS LATE The Washington Commanders will play the Dallas Cowboys at 4:25 p.m. EST on Sunday, the NFL announced today.

The NFC East games are the only games not on the west coast slated for the later time slot.

Sunday Night Football will be between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on NBC.

JAN 1 COMMANDERS ELIMINATED The day started with the Washington Commanders controlling their own playoff destiny, but it ended in the worst outcome possible.

By virtue of the wins from the Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers, the Commanders are eliminated from the playoffs.

At 7-8-1, the Commanders hold the 10th seed in the NFC with no chance of getting in the top 7.

JAN 1 WENTZ WOBBLY Carson Wentz is the “new” Commanders starter today … and it isn’t working.

He has opened 2 of 6 for 13 yards with two interceptions in a little more than a quarter.

That’s right. At home against the Browns, Wentz has … two completions. And two interceptions.

And some in the audience at FedEx are already chanting for a change to Taylor Heinicke.

DEC 31 CURL DOUBTFUL; APKE, PATTERSON ELEVATED VS. BROWNS The Washington Commanders are elevating running back Jaret Patterson and cornerback Troy Apke from the practice squad.

The moves come after Antonio Gibson was ruled out and Kam Curl’s status was switched to doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Browns.

The Commanders host the Browns at 1 p.m. Sunday at FedEx Field.

DEC 30 CHARLES LENO NAMED NFLPA COMMUNITY MVP Washington Commanders offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr. is the Week 17 NFLPA Community MVP.

He pledged more than $90,000 in donations, gifts and experiences through his foundation’s work during the “25 Days of Leno Claus” initiative.

Leno has also been named the Commanders’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, where the winner will be revealed at the NFL Honors in February.

DEC 28 CARSON WENTZ STARTING FOR COMMANDERS Washington coach Ron Rivera said on Tuesday he needed to speak with his team before making a final decision on his starting quarterback moving forward.

With reports coming out Wednesday morning, it appears he has done so and has made the decision to move back to quarterback Carson Wentz as the team’s starter.

The Commanders host the Cleveland Browns this weekend, with a playoff-clinching scenario in play.

DEC 26 JOSH NORMAN WORKS OUT FOR PANTHERS The Carolina Panthers are bringing in cornerback Josh Norman for a workout.

Norman, 35, played four seasons with Washington from 2016-19, but his first NFL home was in Carolina.

Norman made the 2015 Pro Bowl in his final season with the Panthers, where the team went all the way to Super Bowl 50 before losing to the Denver Broncos.

If signed, Norman would replace budding star Jaycee Horn, who broke his wrist Saturday against the Detroit Lions.

DEC 24 HEINICKE BENCHED FOR WENTZ The Washington Commanders are changing quarterbacks.

After two consecutive turnovers in the fourth quarter and a 16-point deficit, the Commanders are inserting Carson Wentz into the game for Heinicke.

Heinicke’s day ends with 13 completions on 18 attempts for 166 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

DEC 21 COMMANDERS SENDING 4 TO PRO BOWL The Washington Commanders will be well-represented at this year’s Pro Bowl Games.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who surpassed 1000 yards for the season on Sunday against the New York Giants, was the lone offensive starter.

On defense, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen made it for the second straight year.

The Commanders will also be represented by punter Tress Way and special teams ace Jeremy Reaves.

Daron Payne and Montez Sweat have been named as alternates.

DEC 18 CHASE YOUNG OUT VS. GIANTS The team, media, and the fans have all been wondering when defensive end Chase Young might make his debut.

Young hasn’t stepped on the playing field once as a member of the Commanders’ defense.

Yet that unit has been the bright spot on a team with their playoff destiny in hand.

Hopes of getting No. 99 on the field this weekend against the New York Giants have all but evaporated according to reports on Sunday morning, however.

Now, everyone will turn towards Washington’s road contest against the San Francisco 49ers to see if maybe that’s when Chase gets on the field for the first time in over a year.

DEC 17 COMMANDERS MAKE 2 MOVES AHEAD OF GIANTS GAME The Washington Commanders are activating offensive lineman Wes Martin and clearing defensive lineman Efe Obada ahead of their Sunday Night Football contest against the New York Giants.

Obada was questionable with a finger injury, but he’ll suit up against the Giants. Martin has not made an appearance for the Commanders since Week 4.

DEC 12 CARSON WENTZ BACK The Washington Commanders are activating Carson Wentz from injured reserve today.

Wentz last played in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears where he broke his thumb and required surgery. In a corresponding move, the team placed offensive lineman Tyler Larsen on injured reserve.

DEC 8 WR ODELL BECKHAM JR. DOESN’T GET DALLAS DEAL DONE It’s been reported the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants were two of the front-runners to gain the services of free-agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

After leaving his visit with Dallas without a contract offer, however, it appears if he does return to the NFC East it’ll have to be with New York who the Washington Commanders face next weekend.

Even if Beckham signed with the Giants, it would be unreasonable to expect he’d be ready to play next Sunday night.

Reportedly, the reason no offer was made is out of concerns he may not be available at all in 2022. Making it less likely Washington will see it’s old divisional foe, this season.

DEC 6 LENO NAME WPMOY NOMINEE All 32 teams named one player to be nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. This season, that honor for Washington belongs to offensive tackle Charles Leno Jr.

Leno, 31, signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract this offseason.

DEC 5 KNEE CAP – OUCH Washington starting center Tyler Larsen exited the 20-20 tie with the Giants with a leg injury and was carted off the field. … and now there is a report about the severity of the injury, The Athletic saying that Larsen sustained a dislocated kneecap and that “this could be a season-ending injury for the second consecutive year” for Larsen, who endured an Achilles injury last season.

DEC 5 WASHINGTON COMMANDERS LOSE LINEBACKER It was reported and confirmed on Monday that team captain Cole Holcomb had foot surgery and will miss the remainder of the NFL season following.

DEC 4 NO CHASE YOUNG FOR WEEK 13 AT NEW YORK GIANTS The Washington Commanders will reportedly wait until after the bye week when the team hosts the Giants for Week 15 to bring back defensive end Chase Young (knee).

DEC 1 JOEY SLYE NAMED ST PLAYER OF THE MONTH Washington Commanders kicker Joey Slye is taking home some hardware.

Slye made all 13 of his field goal attempts during the month of November, where the Commanders went 3-1. In Week 10 against the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles, Slye made four field goals and two extra points in the upset win.

The NFC championship game turned into a nightmare scenario for the 49ers. With their running game hampered and their defense struggling to get off the field, San Francisco had to turn to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to salvage their season, and they failed.

This was always the issue when the 49ers settled on Garoppolo in 2021. It’s also why they traded three first-round picks to move up and take on Trey Lance in this year’s draft. When the 49ers’ winning formula didn’t work, they couldn’t lean on their quarterback.

It didn’t bode well on Sunday when Garoppolo’s first throw, a third and seven throws against George Kittle on the 49er’s first drive, sailed over Kittle’s head. A better throw might have resulted in a touchdown.

Overall, it wasn’t a bad first three quarters for the QB. He went 13-to-21 for 202 yards and 2 touchdowns in that span. However, the wheels came loose when the game was balanced.

Garoppolo went 3-for-9 in the fourth quarter for 30 yards and an interception, and the game turned at a point that exposed head coach Kyle Shanahan’s lack of confidence in Garoppolo to make a play.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Rams scored a touchdown to cut the 49ers’ lead to 17-14. San Francisco cruised, looking for a touchdown that could effectively end the game. A 9-yard run by running back Elijah Mitchell on a first down put the 49ers at the Rams’ 44-yard line.

On second-and-1, Mitchell was stuffed with a loss of 1.

On the third and second full-backs, Kyle Juszczyk was brought down without a win.

Then the 49ers punted.

They didn’t even pretend to put the ball in their quarterback’s hands. Not in second or third place and certainly not in fourth. The ultra-conservative trio of calls after Mitchell got the 49ers fourth might be a flaw in Shanahan’s game calling, but it’s hard to believe it had nothing to do with the quarterback.

After that punt by the 49ers, the Rams went for 63 yards in nine games and kicked a field goal to tie the game.

What happened next was perhaps the worst-case scenario for San Francisco. You throw the ball in the air three times. All three shots were incomplete with a game penalty delay interspersed on the second relegation. None of the throws were particularly tight.

Los Angeles went down and kicked the go-ahead field goal, leaving Garoppolo with 1:46 and a time-out to orchestrate a game-timing or go-ahead drive.

What followed was another disaster. There was another incompletion, then a completion for wide receiver Jauan Jennings for minus 3 yards, and then an interception on a shovel pass that sailed high for RB JaMycal Hasty. The game was over. Garoppolo went 1-on-6 for minus 3 yards and a pick on what might be his final plays as a 49er.

That was always the problem with Garoppolo. He’s not a “bad” player. He is limited. And those limitations are easy to hide when the defense is running light and the game in progress is messing up the defense (or the special teams are scoring touchdowns). Quarterback mattered on Sunday. The 49ers needed a playmaker, and Garoppolo isn’t.

Unfortunately for Garoppolo and the 49ers, consistent winning in the modern NFL requires the quarterback to make plays when all else fails. That’s why they’re moving on and any doubts as to why the 49ers would part ways with a quarterback that took them to the NFC Championship game have been removed.

At some point, every season in the NFL will end up in QB, and San Francisco just wasn’t good enough.

Two California teams are looking to return to the Super Bowl for the second time in five years, although some may not have predicted they’d be there when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Los Angeles Rams.

The Rams have had ups and downs on offense throughout the regular season, but they came back last Sunday to play the defending Super Bowl champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford threw through the air for two touchdowns for a total of 366 yards. The Rams almost screwed it up, losing a 27-3 lead to Tom Brady. However, a 44-yard pass to Cooper Kupp in the dying seconds set up Matt Gay’s game-winning field goal to set off the upset.

The Rams are looking to make it to their fifth Super Bowl and their first in three years. Overall, LA sits 4-9 in appearances in conference titles.

Watch the NFL on FuboTV (Free Trial)

San Francisco didn’t have nearly the same amount of offense when it faced the NFL’s best team in the regular season, as they held the Green Bay Packers to just 263 yards of offense at snowy Lambeau Field in their divisional matchup. The Niners were unable to get a touchdown until they hit a blocked punt in the fourth quarter to level the game at 10. After regaining the ball a few minutes from time, Jimmy Garoppolo led a slow drive down the field. enough to field Robbie Gould’s 45-yard game winner to send the Niners to the conference championship.

This is the 49ers’ second NFC Championship game in three seasons as they attempt to return to the Super Bowl for the eighth time in franchise history after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs years ago.

WALNUT – Reigning California Community College Athletic Association football champion Riverside City College (10-2) will defend its title against seven-time champion and undefeated City College of San Francisco (12-0).

The showdown begins Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mt. San Antonio College’s new stadium in Walnut

• Riverside defeated two unbeaten teams en route to the title game: Ventura, 41-21, and then Golden West, 27-23, in the Southern California championship game on Saturday, December 4th. That avenged an earlier 37-20 non-league setback for the Rustlers that had ended the Tigers’ state-leading 16-game winning streak (and included a 13-0 title campaign in 2019). This was the last CCCAA championship season before COVID.

• CCSF finished 2019 state runners-up College of San Mateo’s 4-season Bay 6 Championship, 31-27 (then ranked 1st state and nation) in the regular season finals. The Rams repulsed the Bulldogs 20-17 again at the Northern California Championships after defeating American River 35-17 in the semifinals.

San Francisco finished the regular season 10-0 and ranked #1 in the JC Athletic Bureau’s poll of California Community College football coaches. Riverside was No. 4 at 8-2.

This is effectively the national 2-year college title game as well, with CCSF having the nation’s best record at 12-0. The vast majority of America’s 117 teams play in the CCCAA, 63 in 2021 (plus Cabrillo and College of the Redwoods, who are on hiatus here). The National JC Athletic Association has just 54 football teams, with Iowa Western being the only undefeated – at 9-0.

Both teams are coached by former All-Star CCC quarterbacks who have played for legendary coaches: Riverside’s Tom Craft of the Monterey Peninsula (for the late Chris Pappas) and CCSF’s Jimmy Collins (for George Rush).

Note: Last Saturday’s first Chris Pappas (Memorial) Bowl was won by Contra Costa, 28-19, over Foothill – the end of the American Division season.

Offensive: CCSF is the state’s highest-scoring National Division team with 45.0 points per game; also compiles top yards per game, 458.8. The breakdown is 316.8 passing (#1 overall) and 142.0 rushing.

Riverside is 33.4 ppg, 440.1 yards per game (No. 2). Breakdown: 262.8 passing, 178.3 rushing.

Defense: The Rams defense is No. 2 in the state overall at 11.7 ppg (behind San Mateo, 11.0 — but against whom they scored 51 points in their two meetings of the season). CCSF held CSM to 42 net rushing yards in the NorCal title game.

Def. meters: 220.7 (53.9 rush, 166.8 pass).

Riverside has allowed 22.5 ppg. Def. meters: 338.6 (118.8 rush, 218.8 pass)

• QB Jack Newman (6-1, 190, Sun.), Bay 6 offensive POY; has the best collegiate efficiency rating in the National Division, 184.5, and leads all in passing yards, 3,359: 227 of 335, 36 TD, 5 int.

• WR Jeffrey Weimer (6-2, 205, Sun.), Unanimous All Bay 6: 75 pc (No. 1 State), 1,253 yards. (#1 state, person over 1,000 yards only), 16.7 average, 17 TD (#1 state).

• RB Shawn Allen (5-8, 170, Fr.), All-Bay 6: 100 tcb, 774 yds., 4.7 avg., 60.3 y/g, 10 TD.

• RB Devan Walker (5-9, 180, Sun.): 100 tcb, 454 yds., 4.5 avg., 6 TD.

• OL Munko “Buffalo” Kruize (6-6, 275, Sun.) All-Bay 6.

• DB D’Andre Greeley (6-0, 180, Sun), All-Bay 6, leads the state with nine interceptions, including those that ended the season from San Mateo with 5:35 left in the NorCal showdown -Title finished. After that, the Bulldogs never saw the ball again.

L DL Jahvius “JJ” Leui (5-11, 455, Fr.), Unan. All-Bay 6: 54 Tkls., 8 sacks, 18.5 TFL.

• LB Frederick Thompkins, Jr. (5-11, 225, Sun.), Unan. All-Bay 6: 55 tkls., 4.5 TFL.

• RB Lawrence Starks (5-10, 190, Sun.), Central League Co-Offensive POY: 95 tcb, 537 yds., 5.7 avg., 53.7 y/g., 5 TD; 221 rec. Meter.; 220 meters. on KOR (24.4 average); 978 general purpose (97.8 average).

• QB Jordan Barton (5-9, 180, Fri), All-Central: 155 of 229 (67.7%), 2,164 m, 19 TD, 5 ints, 170.1 eff. He won the MVP award at the regional title game, finishing 28 of 38 for 312 yards, 2

• WR: Jamal Houston (6-2, 185, Sun), 41 pcs, 678 yards. (3.7 average, 61.6 y/g), 5 TD. (Key 74-yd. TD in Reg. Finals).

• RB: Thomas Kinslow (5-10, 210, Sun.), 117 tcb, 501 yds., 5.3 avg., 2 TD.

(KMOV.com) — As the No. 4 seed in the NFC entering the playoffs, the Rams needed some upsets on the other side of the bracket in order to host the NFC Championship Game at Stan Kroenke’s favorite little money pit, SoFi Stadium.

When the San Francisco 49ers defeated the No. 1 seed Green Bay Packers on Saturday night, that window of opportunity opened for the Rams to host the game assuming they could get past Tom Brady and the Buccaneers on Sunday. The Rams put on an impressive showing in eliminating the defending Super Bowl champions in Tampa, setting them up to host the 49ers next weekend.

In most circumstances, that would be something for a team to celebrate. But the Rams in LA don’t exactly have a dome-field advantage when it comes to facing the 49ers.

— David Ochoa (@DavidOchoaTV) January 9, 2022

When the Rams and 49ers last played at SoFi Stadium in Week 18 this season—a win that San Francisco needed just to sneak into the playoffs—49ers fans flooded the stands with red and made their presence known.

Listening to the crowd noise on television, you’d have thought the 49ers were the home team for that game. Your eyes would have told a similar story. Apart from the blue end zone and electronic signage visible in the background behind 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, that’s a Rams road game:

With a trip to the Super Bowl on the line this time around, the Rams are trying to do something about it.

Ticketmaster screenshots began circulating Sunday as the Rams noted that public sales for the NFC Championship Game would be restricted to residents of the Greater Los Angeles region. The alert on the ticket-broker’s website stated that LA residency would be verified at checkout based on the billing address associated with the purchaser’s credit card.

It’s a desperate ploy, an example of ‘prevent defense’ that likely won’t work out as the team intends.

The cheapest current ticket for Sunday’s NFC Championship Game between the Rams and 49ers at SoFi Stadium is over $600. One ticket broker just told me, “It’s going to be a sea of red again. Rams fans are growing, but they aren’t paying $600 for nosebleed tickets. Not happening.” pic.twitter.com/RWC4EsUYxk

— Arash Markazi (@ArashMarkazi) January 23, 2022

It’s as though Kroenke and Kevin Demoff are deluded into believing 49ers fans don’t know anyone in LA that can lend a hand in facilitating a ticket purchase.

And don’t be surprised, Enos, when Los Angeles residents assist with those requests from their San Francisco fan friends, because LA simply doesn’t care about winning Rams football the way St. Louis would have.

That’s something you’d have realized if, you know, you had ever bothered to put a capable product on the field for the final decade of the team’s time in the Lou.

Of course, we know this by now in St. Louis. Rams brass built a consistently listless team in the years before bolting for Los Angeles in 2016. They failed to achieve even one winning season from 2004 to 2015. They lied and deceived anyone in their path en route to a relocation that was an outright violation of the NFL’s own relocation guidelines. They recently agreed to cough up $790 million to St. Louis in a settlement that proves they darn well knew it.

And even putting everything else aside, from a pure football perspective, it really is a crime.

Since moving to Los Angeles, Kroenke and Co. have completely shifted gears. Wouldn’t you know it, they started trying to win. Signing marquee free agents and executing trades to bring in winning players. It’s as though they began paying attention to the draft. With a third-round pick in 2017, they found Cooper Kupp.

Look, you don’t have to like the Rams—I sure as heck don’t—but even the most embittered former St. Louis Rams fans would have to admit that Kupp is a superstar. He won the wide receiver triple crown this season, leading the league in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He’s certainly the kind of player St. Louis would have fallen in love with.

STL would be losing its ever-loving mind, donating plasma and taking out second mortgages to support a Rams team like this one. That’s just a fact. https://t.co/0iC0gvheMb

— Brenden Schaeffer (@bschaeffer12) January 24, 2022

One thing is for certain. If this game were being played in St. Louis, you wouldn’t have players’ wives begging people on social media not to sell their tickets to the opposing team’s fan base.

If you @RamsNFL fans want to sell your tickets – I’ll buy them. Just DO NOT sell them to the other team PLEASE!

— Melissa Whitworth (@mrs_whit77) January 23, 2022

Los Angeles has a Rams team that St. Louis would have bent over backwards to support, and their city doesn’t seem to care. The Rams are so concerned about the apathy from their new home fans that they feel the need to play some prevent defense long before the game even kicks off.

Aaron Rodgers understands his hopes for a second Super Bowl title with the Green Bay Packers are running out of time.

The 38-year-old quarterback’s final postseason run begins Saturday night as he attempts to beat the team that has served as the three-time MVP’s greatest nemesis in the playoffs.

Rodgers has a 0-3 playoff record against the San Francisco 49ers, despite beating them in the regular season for the past two years. The top-ranked Packers (13-4) and 49ers (11-7) face off again Saturday night in an NFC division playoff game at Lambeau Field.

“I think mortality in football is something we all think about,” Rodgers said. “And we all think about how many opportunities are presented to us to move forward, and each one is special.”

Since stumbling to a 3-5 start, the 49ers have won eight of 10 while showing a knack for delivering away. They secured a playoff spot by recovering from a 17-0 deficit to win an away game in overtime with the Los Angeles Rams and followed that up with a 23-17 wildcard win in Dallas.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo says San Francisco’s slow start prompted the 49ers to adopt a playoff mentality prematurely.

“When you put that pressure on your team early on, it creates a mindset,” Garoppolo said. “It creates an atmosphere of urgency in the dressing room that we need to win now and make some plays.”

The Packers defeated the 49ers 30-28 on the road on September 26, with the 49ers erasing a 17-0 deficit and taking the lead in the last minute before Rodgers Green Bay for Mason Crosby’s 51-yard field goal positioned time up. The Packers also beat the 49ers away from home last season, 34-17.

But the 49ers can draw on their successful postseason history against Rodgers’ Packers, including a 37-20 win in the NFC Championship game two seasons ago.

“This is a special opportunity,” Rodgers said. “We’re not going to make it bigger than it is. We’ve come to the point where we’re level headed and balanced and haven’t triggered a roller coaster of emotions, and we will continue to do the same. So if it was good enough to get us this far, it’s good enough to get us past this point.”

DYNAMIC DEEBO

Deebo Samuel has added another role to his all-round squad.

The dynamic receiver and runner showed off his forecasting skills last week. After San Francisco intercepted a pass, Samuel challenged coach Kyle Shanahan to get him the ball and he would score. Shanahan called a handoff on the next play, and Samuel took it 26 yards for a TD.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time and I’ve never been anywhere near a football player who’s done his own thing,” said Mike McDaniel, 49ers offensive coordinator. “I go to basketball, but when you play with 22 people on the field, 11 of them try to attack you with all their might. And you’re just like, ‘Hey, yeah, give me the ball, I’ll put the ball in the box’, and for him that was a special moment that only a special player could achieve.”

Samuel has 1,880 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns this season, including the playoffs.

STAY DISCIPLINE

Green Bay’s most obvious concern is slowing down a 49ers rushing attack. Elijah Mitchell and Samuel ran 168 yards together against the Cowboys.

The Packers say they also need to pay attention to what linebacker De’Vondre Campbell described as “eye candy.” Campbell was referring to various shifts and pre-snap moves that Shanahan uses to trick defenders into looking the wrong way.

“The way he designs his plays, the moves, and all the different kinds of shifts and all that kind of stuff, it’s something that draws everyone’s attention,” said Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark. “So if your eyes are in the wrong place, if you’re not doing your job or doing what you’re trained to do, he can take advantage of that.”

VIOLATION UPDATES

Packer’s offensive tackle David Bakhtiari (knee) and cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder) are questionable and wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling (back) is iffy. The Packers are awaiting wide receiver Randall Cobb (core) and offensive tackle Billy Turner (knee) after injuries knocked them out for the latter part of the regular season.

49ers defensive end Nick Bosa (concussion), cornerback Ambry Thomas (knee) and defensive end Jordan Willis (ankle) are questionable. Bosa was deleted from the concussion log.

DEFEND DAVANTE

Green Bay’s Davante Adams caught 12 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown in the Packers’ regular-season win over the 49ers.

San Francisco is stronger in the secondary now than it was in September thanks to Thomas’ late-season appearance, but defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans knows slowing Adams will be a tall order.

“They make it difficult because they move Davante great,” Ryans said. “He doesn’t stay in one place. He can move into the slot. He can play outside. He is everywhere.”

tundra

The forecast for Saturday in Green Bay calls for a high of 19 degrees with a low of 7, although no snow is expected.

Steady wins the race.

Will Zalatoris, the 23-year-old native of San Francisco, put in an expert performance at the TPC Colorado Championship in Heron Lakes last weekend. Zalatoris shot 67-67-70-69 during the four-day event to finish under at 15 and take his first career win.

“Finally,” said a visibly pleased Zalatoris in front of the assembled media after he had earned the victory. “It’s probably been four years since I won a golf tournament. It still hasn’t arrived. “

It wasn’t quite four years, but it was close. Zalatoris’ last win in any type of tournament came in 2017 when he took first place as a senior at Wake Forest at Duke University’s Rod Myers Invitational. When he started this week, Zalatoris had come this close as he tied sixth, third and fourth in his last three tournaments.

“Just hold on to the finish and trust it and get the job done day in and day out and it’s nice to see it finally pay off … it’s pretty nice,” Zalatoris said. “I think, to be honest, just a little consolation in the finals. I followed the last two tournaments from behind. “

Zalatoris’s performance was barely enough on Saturday’s final lap to hold off Chase Johnson, who set a course record of 63 to runner-up.

Johnson excelled in the final round on Saturday, carding 10 birdies over 18 holes, shooting 31-32 to get a 14-under and going into the clubhouse with part of the lead.

“It was fun, I came out today just thinking, ‘It’s kind of all or nothing for my position here,’ and I knew I could do it if I had a hot start to what I really call the top nine I could give myself a chance with the second nine, ”said Johnson on Saturday afternoon. “I just tried to be as patient as possible because you can’t force anything here.”

The $ 54,000 prize for second place secures Johnson, who entered the week on conditional status, his Korn Ferry Tour card for the remainder of the season. “We’re all trying to do that, to put ourselves in the competition, but actually to go to the last round and place a 63 to give us a chance, that’s a huge confidence boost.”

As great as Johnson was, Zalatoris was unfazed and kept playing his game. A birdie on the characteristic par-3 hole 16 brought him one shot ahead of Johnson.

Two par fours remained. A textbook four against 17 gave Zalatoris the leeway to only have to reach par 18 to avoid a playoff with Johnson. Zalatoris missed the fairway from the tee and found himself 212 yards out in the rough. He explained after the round that the goal was only to get to 40 feet, knowing that the one spot he couldn’t miss was on the right, where there was a deep bunker.

After hitting the approach shot, Zalatoris stated, “I told my caddy, ‘this is gone’ very stressful for a hassle-free exit.”

His birdie putt slipped past the top of the cup by a hair. A straight tripod remained and Zalatoris’s putt hit the cup dead center to claim victory.

The win and associated check for $ 108,000 for first place was enough to propel Zalatoris to the top of the Korn Ferry Tour money list for the season. In normal times, winning the TPC Colorado along with his three other top 5 finishes in Zalatori’s season would almost certainly secure a top 25 spot that would earn him his PGA Tour card for the 2021 season. But these are far from common times as a result of the devastation caused by COVID-19 and the Korn Ferry Tour which have chosen to forego table-based promotions this season.

Even so, given that win and strong and steady play on the Korn Ferry Tour this year, Zalatoris’ lifelong goal of playing the PGA Tour is much closer. The cherry on top? This fall, Zalatoris secured a place for the US Open in the traditional Winged Foot.
