SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The struggling Chicago Cubs will be desperate to avoid a sweep in San Francisco when they end their four-game series against the Giants on Thursday afternoon.

At this point, any win for the Cubs would be welcome.

Their long misery continued late Wednesday night when the Giants' Luis Matos hit a crucial solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Cubs — hampered by three outs on the bases during the game — were unable to respond in the final four innings, falling behind 4-3.

NBA DRAFT: Chicago Bulls select Matas Buzelis with the 11th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft

The Cubs have now lost four games in a row and are 3-13 in their last 16 road games heading into Thursday's series finale in San Francisco. The Cubs also fell to a season low of seven games under .500 at 37-44 and remained in last place in the NL Central heading into Thursday's games.

After the series in San Francisco, the Cubs travel to Milwaukee for a three-game weekend series against the first-place Brewers, who are now 11 games ahead of the Cubs.

Big out on the bases

The Cubs trailed by one run on Wednesday night, but then put runners on first and second base with two outs in the eighth inning after Ian Happ hit a double and Christopher Morel walked.

But with Dansby Swanson at bat, the danger was averted when Giants pitcher Tyler Rogers intercepted Happ while attempting to steal third base.

“It's a risk,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said of the play. “We tried to get two guys in scoring position, but it just didn't work.”

“But base stealing is a risk. We took a risk. It didn't work.”

Swanson then returned to bat to lead off the ninth, hitting a single against Giants closer Camilo Doval. But Doval retired the next three batters, picking up his 14th save in 16 chances, and the game ended with Swanson becoming the seventh Cubs runner to walk off.

The Cubs took a 1-0 lead early in the second inning when Pete Crow-Armstrong singled to right to score Happ, but the Giants took a three-run lead on two straight home runs by Hayden Wesneski to give the Cubs the start of a bullpen game.

Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer with two outs, then David Villar followed with a solo hit that gave the Giants a 3-1 lead.

BASEBALL: White Sox legend on Venezuelan migrants in Chicago: “Some ruined it for the good guys”

Crow-Armstrong raced home on a single by Miguel Amaya from first base in the fourth inning to cut the Cubs lead to 3-2, and Seiya Suzuki hit his ninth home run in the fifth inning to tie the game.

But Matos hit a two-out home run to left in the fifth inning against Drew Smyly, who had been substituted for Wesneski before the inning, and lost, dropping his score to 2-5.

“It feels good to hit a home run,” Matos said through an interpreter. “I went in there looking for something to hit. He threw me a sinker. I let it go. But then he threw me the curveball and I hit it.”

The Giants' three home runs on Wednesday came from their Nos. 7, 8 and 9 batters.

“All of these guys have power,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said. “We talked earlier this year about having a strong lineup and feeling like you can score in every inning, especially with the power in the bottom end.”

Meanwhile, Giants starter Hayden Birdsong was called up from Triple-A Sacramento for his major league debut and allowed three runs and six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.

NASCAR in Chicago: Complete coverage of the Chicago Street Race

“Super exciting, of course,” said Birdsong, 22. “My brain doesn't really know if it's excitement or nervousness, but we're just going to 'go with the flow and try to throw strikes and see what happens.'

“That's all I was thinking.”

Luke Jackson (4-1) followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings and picked up his fourth consecutive win.

Wesneski, making his first start since May 8, allowed three runs on two hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in four innings.

Trainer room

Boy: LHP Jordan Wicks (right oblique strain) is in the early stages of his recovery and will not return until the All-Star break, according to Counsell.

Next

Cubs LHP Shota Imanaga (7-2, 2.96 ERA) will start on Thursday opposite Giants RHP Jordan Hicks (4-4, 3.24).

The first pitch is scheduled for 2:45 p.m.

Companies are trying to bring employees back into the office. Early data suggests that workers still aren’t that keen.

According to a new report by Placer.ai, visits to office buildings have yet to catch up to pre-pandemic levels in such major employment centers as San Francisco, Manhattan and Chicago.

In May 2022, visits to office buildings in San Francisco were down by 67.8% as compared to three years ago, before the pandemic shuttered most of the country. Office foot traffic in New York is down 40.6% over the same period, and 45.7% in Chicago.

Placer.ai’s Office Building Index takes into account foot traffic from nearly 200 office buildings in San Francisco, Manhattan and Chicago.

The tourists are back in New York City, but employees are still holding out even as many of their bosses seek to pull them back to the office.

            Spencer Platt/Getty Images

‘They are not coming back’

After two years of working from home, many have adapted and adopted the work from home lifestyle, which has been particularly attractive given how high fuel costs have gotten. Not to mention the fact that COVID-19 is still out there.

Company chiefs are aware of the resistance.

“I have been unsuccessful, despite everything I’ve tried to do to get our people back to work,” Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks SBUX, -0.18%,
said during a New York Times event earlier this month.

“I want them back. I plead with them, I said I’d get on my knees, I’d do push-ups. Whatever you want. Come back,” Schultz said. “No — they are not coming back at the level I want them to… I realize that I’m an old-school person, and this is a different generation and I’ve been schooled by our people… We have to establish a new way of working. And I’ve embraced it.”

But early data also seem to indicate that some Americans haven’t yet fully adopted a permanent work from home lifestyle.

Last week, office occupancy hit the highest point since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020, reaching 44.1%, according to Kastle Systems, which tracks key card swipe data.

Some 64% said they would consider looking for a new job if they were required to return to the office full time, according to a recent survey by ADP, a provider of human resources management software and services.

Of course, it’s a privilege for people to work from home, while so many other service workers have been showing up in person during the pandemic.

The Labor Department says only 7.4% of employees teleworked in May, down from 7.7% the month before. The Federal Reserve Board’s survey looking into Americans’ economic well-being released last month estimated a higher percentage of employees (22%) worked entirely from home.

Write to: aarthi@marketwatch.com

So read: ‘I’m very outspoken about my desire to never work in an office again’: CEOs and employees are locked in a battle of wills over returning to the office

Berkshire Hathaway Home Services named Yvonne Mortirmer, a 27-year veteran of Coldwell Banker, as operations manager for three of its offices in suburban Chicago, where prices have been rising.

She will oversee Berkshire’s Naperville, Glen Ellyn and Wheaton operations, the Daily Herald reported.

After her decades at Coldwell, Mortimer was most recently the director of agent development for Baird & Warner’s Glen Ellyn office, a job she left after starting in March 2021 to join Berkshire.

“Yvonne’s going to be a great resource for [agents], focusing on training and growth opportunities. She will be a great addition to the offices,” Joe Stacy, senior vice president and managing broker for Berkshire, said in a press release.

Mortimer and her new colleagues will be working through what is still expected to be a seller’s market in the suburbs and city this year, Chicago-area agents, including Berkshire’s Brian Pistorious, have predicted.

While Dawn McKenna, Coldwell Banker’s top broker in Illinois, told The Real Deal this month that homes in the city are seeing fewer multiple offers than early during the pandemic-induced seller’s market, suburban prices remain high and bidding wars there have been frequent amid tight inventory.

She expected prices to stop climbing as quickly in Chicago but to remain on the rise in the suburbs, where bidding wars have priced out first-time buyers and kept them in the rental market, which McKenna noted is also tight in the suburbs.

A swath of Chicago’s northwesterly suburbs including Lake and McHenry counties has been especially lacking in new multi-family rental development over the last 20 years, consultants have told local officials.

That has changed over the past two years of the pandemic, as the area has received numerous multi-family development proposals. Yet market research performed by Tracy Cross for a local government shows at least 320 units could be added annually across just a portion of Lake and McHenry counties each year without diminishing demand.

The new lease comes as Stripe looks to go on a Chicago hiring spree. The company did not respond to requests for comment on the move or plans for growth, but its website lists more than 240 open jobs based in Chicago, including more than 50 engineering roles.

Stripe adds to a long list of Bay Area-based tech companies looking to bulk up on headcount in Chicago, where tech-savvy talent is generally more affordable and easier to retain than on the coasts. Google, Facebook, Salesforce and ServiceNow are among the major West Coast firms that have added heavily to their Chicago workforces in recent years, a trend that lifted the fortunes of many downtown office landlords before the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the beneficiaries was New York-based private-equity giant Blackstone Group, which owns the Orleans Street building, formerly known as the Apparel Mart. The firm inked a big lease just before the pandemic with San Francisco-based online consumer-lending company Affirm.

Stripe’s deal comes against an uglier backdrop for office building owners, with the rise of remote work pushing companies to rethink their workspace needs and driving up the downtown office vacancy to a record high. Stripe’s recommitment to in-person work is a promising example for landlords with large blocks of space to fill.

With Affirm and other new tenants, Blackstone has had some success backfilling portions of its vacant space in the 1.3 million-square-foot building after advertising firm WPP left the building for a new office in the Fulton Market District. The property was 75% leased before the Stripe deal, according to real estate information company CoStar Group, lower than the 80% average among downtown office buildings as of the end of 2021.

Spokesmen for Blackstone did not respond to requests for comment.

The Orleans Street building has new development happening all around it, most visibly with Salesforce Tower rising next door at Wolf Point. Salesforce and law firm Kirkland & Ellis will be moving to the 60-story skyscraper, which is scheduled for completion next year.

The floors above Blackstone’s office building are also undergoing a major makeover. Chicago developer John Murphy is underway with a $40 million-plus renovation to the outdated, 522-room Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza that is on pace to be completed in the next few months.

Stripe’s technology is used by companies to process payments for online purchases, and the company said in 2019 it was planning to tap into Chicago’s deep pool of engineering and other tech-smart talent that knows the industry. Chicago has been home to several tech companies with ties to mobile payments and e-commerce, including Braintree and Groupon.

Founded in 2009, Stripe saw wild growth in customer demand recently as the pandemic forced more people to shop online. The company’s revenue grew 70% in 2020 to $7.4 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Brad Serot of CBRE negotiated the lease on behalf of Stripe. CBRE’s Mike Kazmierczak represented Blackstone.

Vitaly Alexandrov is the founder of Food Rocket, a food-tech grocery delivery company.

After launching in San Francisco, Alexandrov decided to move Food Rocket’s HQ to Chicago in 2022.

He says the move will cut down on operating costs while also expanding to a new market.

                        Loading Something is loading.

My company initially started as a tech startup called Foody that helped simplify how restaurants order their inventory. Once the pandemic hit, I felt it was time to pivot, and we decided to relaunch as Food Rocket, a 15-minute grocery delivery service.

Since then, we’ve been holding our own in San Francisco against competitors like DoorDash and GoPuff. Despite our growth in Silicon Valley, in December I decided we would relocate HQ to Chicago in 2022.

California put us on the map, but Chicago will keep us there

California is an amazing state. The weather is gorgeous, the people are lovely, and everyone is keen to try the next tech trend, which makes it an ideal place for a startup like ours.

We couldn’t have asked for a better place to get our start than San Francisco, because the city and its people have taught us so much. But as our team of more than 70 continues to grow, we’re ready to expand into new markets.

While San Francisco is still the king of startups, many investors and companies are migrating to other emerging markets like Austin, Tampa, and Raleigh, and I think it’s important to make our move sooner rather than later.

After a lot of research, I decided to move Food Rocket HQ to Chicago

We did extensive market research before settling on Chicago. As one of the largest cities in the US, Chicago is a great place for any emerging business. For Food Rocket specifically as a grocery delivery company, the city’s population density can help us understand how consumers buy groceries and how we can offer delivery services based on their preferences.

Chicagoans have different wants and needs than San Franciscans, which means that we’ll also have an opportunity to learn the demands of a new local market. We want to change the way America grocery shops, so I think it’s essential for our team to experience different areas of the country to learn how to cater to and succeed in various regions.

Real estate is also cheaper in Chicago, which will allow us to open more dark stores for our delivery operations and expand farther than we could have in San Francisco. Our overall operating costs will be lower, so we’ll also be able to offer more competitive pricing for Chicago customers.

                          <img class="lazy-image " viewbox="0 0 1 1" data-content-type="image/jpeg" srcs="{"https://i.insider.com/620c02b516a6300018c9240c":{"contentType":"image/jpeg","aspectRatioW":3744,"aspectRatioH":2813}}" alt="Food Rocket employees"/>

Food Rocket riders at one of the company’s dark stores.

Food Rocket

There’s no mandatory requirement for employee relocation with our HQ move, as many of our employees already currently work remotely, but some employees have said they do plan to move with us. Remote employees directly involved in operations understand that I expect them to visit Chicago periodically to become familiar with the people and market, so it will also be a convenient central location.

Overall, Chicago is an important part of our long-term business strategy

Because the city is so different from San Francisco, it’s almost like an entirely new business model, which is exciting for us. Since we’re no longer a startup, we also wanted to explore a non-startup city environment.

For other entrepreneurs considering an HQ move, focus on finding a location that has the most benefits for your business. Choosing some trendy place might sound fun, but in the end if you’re making a big move, make sure it’s to a place where your business will thrive.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s plan to relax Chicago’s sanitation law to ease the financial burden on homeowners and businesses went through a city council committee on Tuesday, paving the way for increased use of plastic pipe and construction of “more gender-neutral restrooms.”

At the behest of newly appointed building commissioner Matthew Beaudet, the Zoning Committee has approved several changes.

One would permit expanded use of PVC plastic drain, waste and vent pipes, now restricted to above ground applications in residential buildings no higher than three stories.

The changes would allow PVC drainpipe to be used for the residential portion of buildings up to 60 feet, or five stories, even if part of the building houses commercial space.

PVC pipes would also be allowed for underground residential use “if they are completely separate from commercial use. But if they both use the same thing, then it would be cast iron,” Beaudet told councillors.

“These expanded opportunities for residential use will be a huge benefit for homeowners who want to stay in their homes and for multi-family housing, especially for affordable housing,” the new commissioner said.

Despite the changes, Chicago would retain its longstanding need for copper tubing for drinking water. Some cities allow the use of “other materials”, but after consultation with “industry groups” and the Ministry of Water Management, the city hall decided not to relax this part of the code.

Another change allows “small physical stores”, including restaurants with 30 people or fewer, to provide only a single-user toilet.

“By reducing the floor space required for restrooms, the floor space that can be used for business activities increases. … In a small restaurant there might be room for an extra table with two seats,” Beaudet told councillors.

“This will help tremendously as businesses emerge from the pandemic and new businesses seek to open in your business corridors and neighborhoods.”

Gender-neutral bathrooms instead of separate male and female bathrooms would free up space in restaurants and other businesses. Associated Press

Also, the OC would add provisions for gender-neutral restrooms – with gender-neutral signs – that take up less space and therefore free up more revenue-generating floor space for larger restaurants and businesses.

If, as expected, the full Council agrees to the change, so-called “single-user toilet rooms” could be used to provide the required toilet facilities, “either in combination with or instead of multi-stall male and female toilets”. said the commissioner.

The ordinance also allows “all-gender toilets, with multiple private toilet stalls and shared sinks,” Beaudet said. This option includes requirements to “ensure security and privacy for all users,” he said.

“These changes help create toilets that are more user-friendly and welcoming not just for transgender people, but for everyone,” Beaudet said.

“For example, a parent who doesn’t want to send their child to a opposite-sex toilet alone, or an elderly person who needs help from a caregiver of the opposite sex.”

The changes would also clarify requirements for water safety, water-efficient plumbing fixtures and swimming pool design as part of a series of updates to “better align plumbing codes with the Chicago building code revised two years ago.

Also Tuesday, the Zoning Committee expanded the list of property owners who can benefit from Lightfoot’s slow plan to replace leading service lines.

Last year, the City Council approved a permit fee waiver of up to $3,100 for homeowners who volunteer to replace their leading service lines. The problem is that only 20 homeowners in the city introduced the mayor.

The expanded regulation would offer churches and other nonprofits the same break.

Muddy Waters House has been approved for Landmark status

City councilors also granted Historic Landmark status to the Muddy Waters home, 4339 S. Lake Park Ave.

The double apartment was built in 1891 and was the home of the blues legend from 1954 to 1973. Chandra Cooper, Waters’ great-granddaughter and current owner, applied for eviction.

Kandalyn Hahn of the Chicago Department of Planning and Development said the “hospitality shown to Chicago musicians and musicians who came to town to record made the house an unofficial center” for the Chicago blues community.

“It was close to the city’s concentration of record retailers and independent record labels like Chess Records, as well as the South Side blues clubs, which made it a natural meeting place for other blues musicians,” Hahn told councillors.

“Musicians were welcome 24/7. Traveling musicians like Howlin’ Wolf and Chuck Berry were offered not only food and drink, but also accommodation. Band members – including Otis Spann and James Cotton – lived in apartments on the second floor. The rehearsals took place in the basement and went outside in the courtyard on warm days.”

Ald. Sophia King (4th), whose community includes the Muddy Waters Museum, said Waters made a “huge contribution” to blues and rock ‘n’ roll.

“Having his special home here in Chicago as a landmark would be something that not only recognizes his contributions, but also the blues’ contribution to Chicago,” King said.

GALESBURG – A $ 50 million expansion project by Intellihot, the commercial water heater manufacturer, currently headquartered on West Main Street, is expected to result in a net increase in the number of jobs in Galesburg.

Intellihot’s marketing spokeswoman Amy Turner said the company’s manufacturing facility will remain in Galesburg and the company will continue to create jobs there as it plans to make large production increases as it grows.

Intellihot employs approximately 85 people in Galesburg, ranging from positions in accounting, marketing, operations, production, quality, procurement, engineering and technical support. Intellihot said “it remains to be seen” how many jobs will be created in Galesburg.

However, the corporate headquarters will be relocated from Galesburg to the Chicagoland area.

“That includes marketing, sales, engineering, and a few others, and we have a state-of-the-art training center for our agents and dealers that is easy to get to from nearby airports,” said Turner.

The majority of the employees who will be working in Chicago were remote and not working from the Galesburg office.

“In anticipation of this growth, we have already started our expansion in Galesburg to ensure that the learning curve is mastered before production requirements are met,” said Turner. “In 2021 alone we have recorded 70% growth to date and currently only have a handful of vacancies, (mainly) quality, procurement and manufacturing technology.”

Intellihot was founded in 2009 in Galesburg by Sridhar Deivasigamani and developed more efficient instantaneous water heaters. In 2010, the company moved into the 12,000 square meter incubator in the former Carhartt building at 2900 W. Main St.

According to PRNewswire, the company announced this week that it has raised $ 50 million in growth funding led by investors Aegon Asset Management and the Avenue Sustainable Solutions Fund.

Intellihot will increase the number of employees from 100 to 150

The growth funding will be used to expand Intellihot’s sales, marketing and operations capabilities, advance the company’s research and development into advanced sustainable technologies, and increase the production and scale of existing products. As part of its planned expansion, Intellihot will create 50 new jobs over the next two years, representing a 50% increase in the number of employees. A significant portion of the expanded team will work at Intellihot’s new Chicago headquarters, due to open in 2022.

Focused on developing breakthrough technologies to revolutionize the $ 81 billion global HVAC market, Intellihot plans to expand internationally. Intellihot’s technologies are used across the country by large establishments such as hotels, restaurants, stadiums, hospitals, and more.

Current Intellihot customers include Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, Benihana, the New York City Housing Authority and Levi’s Stadium, home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.

“If we as a society have learned anything from COP26, it is that we can hardly wait to implement climate solutions and reduce emissions,” said Sridhar Deivasigamani, founder and CEO of Intellihot. “The next few years will be meaningful to the Intellihot team as we continue to expand into housing, apartment buildings, senior living facilities, schools, universities, restaurants and more.”

about IFTTT

Note from Zennie62Media and OaklandNewsNow.com: This video blog post demonstrates the full and live operation of the latest updated version of an experimental Zennie62Media, Inc. network for video blogging systems for mobile media that was launched in June 2018 by Zennie62Media, Inc .s new and innovative approach to news media production. What we call “The Third Wave of Media”. The uploaded video is from a YouTube channel. When the YouTube video channel for WGN News Chicago uploads a video, it is automatically uploaded to the Oakland News Now site and Zennie62’s own social media pages and formatted automatically. The overall goal here is, in addition to our smartphone-enabled real-time reporting of news, interviews, observations and events anywhere in the world and within seconds, not hours – the use of the existing YouTube social graphic on any topic in the world. Now messages are reported with the smartphone and also by advertising current content on YouTube: There is no need for heavy and expensive cameras or even a laptop or a camera team to film what is already on YouTube. The secondary goal is faster and very inexpensive production and distribution of media content. We have found that there is a discrepancy between post length and time to product and revenue generated. This means that the problem is much smaller, but by no means solved. Zennie62Media is constantly working to improve the system’s network encoding and is looking for interested content and media technology partners.

CHICAGO – Entering Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears, it was fair to ask if Jimmy Garoppolo made his final start as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in the same location where he made his first: his hometown of Chicago.

With the Niners in the middle of a four-game losing streak and rookie quarterback Trey Lance returning from a sprained left knee, another loss combined with fights from Garoppolo could have seen Lance join the line-up at some point, maybe next Week.

Instead, Garoppolo put together perhaps his best overall performance of the season in front of more than 100 friends and family from the Chicago area he grew up in, and the Niners improved to 3-4 with a 33-22 win at Soldier Field .

“It means a lot,” said Garoppolo. “Every game does, but when you go back to your hometown it just feels different. Landing at the airport, getting into the city, all the familiarity, all the good stuff, it’s just a special feeling. It’s a good day. “

Not only was it a good day, it was a necessary day for Garoppolo, who weathered last week’s battles in a rain-soaked loss to the Indianapolis Colts. After a few early drops from his receivers, Garoppolo hit receiver Deebo Samuel for a 50-yard stroke to set up a field goal just before half-time.

That deal seemed to ease things up as Garoppolo finished 17 of 28 for 322 yards without interceptions for a pass rating of 100.6. He added a couple of roaring touchdowns, the first multi-score game on the floor. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Garoppolo is the third player in franchise history to throw 300 yards and score multiple points in a game, along with Steve Young and Jeff Garcia.

All of this came after Garoppolo’s two interceptions in last week’s 30:18 loss to the Colts. That performance made the drumbeat louder for Lance, even as coach Kyle Shanahan declared Garoppolo to be this week’s starter on Monday.

Despite Lance’s return to the backup role, he didn’t snap a shot of the bears.

“I wanted to be on the safe side with the packages for him this week,” Shanahan said. “It was his first week back so I wouldn’t just put him in there just to do that kind of thing.”

Garoppolo underscored the first of his roaring touchdowns – a broken game that should go to Samuel – with an emphatic spike. After his second goal, Garoppolo uncorked a throw in the stands, the first time since a league win in Seattle at the end of the 2019 season.

“My college roommates were in that end zone, so hopefully one of them got it,” said Garoppolo. “It was just so much emotion. I’m not used to capturing it right from the start, so it was pretty cool when it happened.”

For all of these efforts, Shanahan awarded Garoppolo a cue-ball, a train that caused loud cheers from a cheerful Niners’ locker room.

“When he got home in front of his fans, he had his back to the wall just like everyone else in our building, but it was great to see him show up and play like he did today,” said Shanahan.

It wasn’t the only ball Shanahan handed out on Sunday. The other went to someone else who made an even more important birth on Saturday night: punter Mitch Wishnowsky’s wife, Maddie, who gave birth to the couple’s first child in Northern California.

“I gave Maddie one because I heard she was very tough,” Shanahan said. “And we kept checking her, he said he couldn’t eat, he vomited, he was so nervous he didn’t get one, she got one.”

After giving birth to his daughter, Wishnowsky flew to Chicago on Sunday morning and arrived around 7 a.m. Wishnowsky, however, did his usual holding duties.

“Poor Mitch had to fly all the way out of here and only hold balls for field goals,” said center Alex Mack with a laugh.

Unfortunately, not all of the news from Sunday’s game was happy for the 49ers. Free Safety Jimmie Ward was eliminated in the fourth quarter with tight quadriceps that could hold him out for a while.

“It’s a pretty big concern,” Shanahan said. “I don’t know yet, but when you talk about pulling a quad, it’s a lot like pulling a hamstring, so we’ll see if that is the case.”
