New research shows that nearly half a million households in the United States, mostly and perhaps surprisingly urban, lack proper plumbing, according to The Guardian.

The data, compiled from U.S. Census Bureau statistics by the Plumbing Poverty Project (PPP), a collaboration between the University of Arizona and King's College London, and released Monday, found that renters and people of color even in some parts of the country In the wealthiest cities, people are more likely to live in a home without running water or flush toilets.

According to The Guardian, the problem was particularly severe in San Francisco, where nearly 15,000 families live without a functioning plumbing system. San Francisco also has the third-most billionaires of any city in the world, the outlet noted.

Data also showed that in 2017, black people made up 9 percent of San Francisco's population, but 17 percent of homes without indoor plumbing, The Guardian reported.

“San Francisco's history of plumbing poverty is inextricably linked to unaffordable housing, declining incomes, changes in California's post-recession rental sector, and racial wealth gaps fueled by a type of 'anti-black urbanism' that has either driven black .” “San Franciscans are being relocated to more precarious housing or leaving the Bay entirely,” Katie Meehan, lead researcher on the PPP and professor of environment and society at King's College London, told The Guardian.

San Francisco renters make up less than half of households in the city's metropolitan area, but nearly 90 percent of homes without working plumbing, The Guardian reported.

The research also showed that cities like Milwaukee, San Antonio, Phoenix, Seattle and Cleveland made little to no progress in improving their sanitation problems between 2000 and 2017. According to The Guardian, there are more than 3,000 households in all five cities without proper plumbing.

“It's not just that the gap between water-rich and water-poor in America is widening, but also because it's being driven by a housing sector that lacks any safety net for working families, particularly households of color, that are stretching astronomically “We can’t afford the prices of San Francisco, Seattle or now even Portland,” Meehan said.

A new detailed report finds an increase in households without running water — what the authors call “plumbing poverty” — in some of America’s wealthiest and fastest-growing cities. These cities include the San Francisco, Portland, Austin, Nashville and Seattle metropolitan areas.

The report finds a clear connection between unaffordable housing, wealth gaps in major cities and plumbing poverty, as households of color and renters disproportionately live without running water in their homes. This is particularly true for households that spend 40-50% of their monthly income on rent despite not having access to running water.

Analyzing data trends from two decades, from 2000 to 2017, the researchers find that San Francisco has the highest share of households without running water, followed by Portland, Milwaukee, San Antonio and Austin (in ranking order). Access to piped water for households in these cities has deteriorated since 2000. Between 2000 and 2017, Los Angeles “improved” to 7th place. But there are still 44,200 people without running water.

Across the United States, nearly 460,000 households, or approximately 1.1 million people, now lack running water in their homes. 73% of households without piped water are in urban areas, 29% of which are in the 15 metropolitan areas featured in this report.

The research was led by Katie Meehan from the Department of Geography at King's College London. Meehan is also a Ph.D. Graduate of the UArizona School of Geography, Development and Environment. Jason Jurjevich, associate professor of practice, and graduate student Nicholas Chun — both at the University of Arizona School of Geography, Development and Environment — co-authored the report.

Phoenix is one of the cities featured in the report:

Since 2000, the poverty rate in the sanitation sector has been stable or “stagnant.” However, the situation for renter households has worsened.

Tenants earn less and pay more to live in a home without running water. 51% of households without piped water are renters, and their rents increased by $250 (38%) between 2000 and 2017, while their average income fell by $230 (10%).

The authors argue that “stagnation” equals “no progress” toward universal access to water.

Detroit, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Los Angeles are among the top 10 “neediest” cities in the country, according to an analysis by personal finance website WalletHub.

The report assessed 182 cities across 28 economic indicators, including child poverty, food insecurity and inadequate kitchens.

Detroit was ranked as the neediest metropolis. According to a Detroit News report, one in five renters in Detroit faced eviction this year.

Brownsville, Texas, took second place. According to a recent report in 24/7 Wall St, a quarter of the city’s population lives in poverty, twice the national average.

Cleveland is in third place. According to a report from WEWS-TV, Cleveland’s poverty rate is 29 percent, making it the second poorest major city in the country after Detroit.

Fourth through sixth places were Gulfport, Miss.; Fresno, California; and Laredo, Texas.

Philadelphia placed seventh. According to WTXF-TV, the City of Brotherly Love recorded 500 murders in 2022.

New Orleans finished in eighth place. The city may have the highest murder rate in the country, with more than 250 murders this year, according to a report from nola.com.

Despite its wealth, Los Angeles came in ninth place on the list of needy cities. According to a recent report in The Nation, more than 40,000 Angelenos live on the streets.

The least needy city in the country, according to WalletHub’s calculation, is the D.C. suburb of Columbia, Maryland, a tony bedroom community in Howard County.

Other cities at the desirable bottom of the list include Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota; Overland Park, the Kansas City suburb; Pearl City, part of the greater Honolulu metropolitan area; South Burlington, Vt., home of Ben & Jerry’s; and Irvine, California, beyond LA’s Orange Curtain

The WalletHub analysis singled out cities with high rates on certain measures of need. Rochester, NY had the highest child poverty rate, followed by Detroit and Cleveland. Huntington, W.Va., had the highest rate of adult poverty, again followed by Detroit and Cleveland.

Five cities share the top spot for homelessness: Fresno and San Francisco in California, New York, DC and Honolulu. Over the years of the pandemic, homeless camps have sprung up around the nation’s capital. San Francisco officials faced legal challenges over the eviction of their homeless population.

Gulfport, Miss., was at the top of the list for food insecurity. More than a quarter of Gulfport residents live in poverty.

San Francisco had the highest rate of homes with inadequate plumbing.

Lewiston, Maine, topped the list of cities with inadequate kitchens, presumably a measure of available water and electricity rather than counter space and cabinets.

(The Hill) – Detroit, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Los Angeles all ranked among the nation’s 10 “neediest” cities, according to an analysis by the personal finance website WalletHub.

The report ranked 182 cities on 28 economic indicators, including child poverty, food insecurity and inadequate kitchens.

Detroit ranked as the neediest metropolis. One Detroit renter in five faced eviction this year, according to a report in The Detroit News.

Brownsville, Texas, ranked second. One-quarter of the city’s population lives in poverty, twice the national average, according to a recent account in 24/7 Wall St.

Cleveland ranks third. Cleveland’s poverty rate is 29 percent, according to a report from WEWS-TV, making it the nation’s second-poorest large city, behind Detroit.

Sneezing and wheezing your way through a day is not something any of us like to do and some of us suffer from seasonal allergies more than others. Something called the 2022 Allergy Capitals conducted a study of 100 of our nation’s cities and Connecticut has 2 in the top 10 of the nation’s worst for seasonal allergies.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America conducted the 2022 Allergy Capitals study of “The Most Challenging Places To Live With Allergies.” They took 100 American cities and looked at several factors including Spring pollen scores, Fall pollen scores, Over-the-counter medicine use, and more for the rankings. I have said this before and I will say it again, we absolutely love analytics in this building, and here is another excellent example of metrics making life better, sort of. We live in an area with a lot of pollen, I get these alerts quite a bit:

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, Hartford came in number 7 and New Haven at number 9 on the list of the MOST challenging places to live with allergies. From the website:

The top 10 most challenging places to live with seasonal allergies are:

Scranton, Pennsylvania

Wichita, Kansas

McAllen, Texas

Richmond, Va

San Antonio, Texas

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Hartford, Connecticut

Buffalo, NY

New Haven, Connecticut

Albany, New York

The top 10 least challenging places to live with seasonal allergies are:

Fresno, California

Phoenix, Ariz

Provo, Utah

Denver, Colo

Sacramento, California

Portland, Oregon

San Jose, California

San Francisco, California

Durham, North Carolina

Seattle, Washington

Getty Images

If you aren’t affected by seasonal allergies, you are lucky and I guess you can live anywhere you want without a problem at all. I am a Claritan type of guy, have to be to breathe properly. Thanks again for hanging out and see you again really soon.

Ranking fourth through sixth were Gulfport, Mississippi; Fresno, California; and Laredo, Texas.

Philadelphia ranked seventh. The City of Brotherly Love has logged 500 homicides in 2022, according to WTXF-TV.

New Orleans ranked eighth. The city may have the nation’s highest murder rate, with more than 250 homicides this year, according to a report in nola.com.

Los Angeles, for all its wealth, came in at ninth on the list of needy cities. More than 40,000 Angelenos live on the streets, according to a recent report in The Nation.

The nation’s least needy city, by WalletHub’s calculus, is the DC suburb of Columbia, Maryland, a tony bedroom community in Howard County.

Other cities at the desirable bottom end of the list include Bismarck, the North Dakota capital; Overland Park, the Kansas City suburb; Pearl City, part of greater Honolulu; South Burlington, Vermont, home to Ben & Jerry’s; and Irvine, California, across the Orange Curtain from LA

The WalletHub analysis singled out cities with high rates on specific measures of need. Rochester, New York, had the highest rate of child poverty, followed by Detroit and Cleveland. Huntington, West Virginia, had the highest rate of adult poverty, again followed by Detroit and Cleveland.

Five cities shared the top spot for homelessness: Fresno and San Francisco in California, New York, DC and Honolulu. Homeless encampments have popped up around the nation’s capital in the pandemic years. San Francisco leaders have faced legal challenges for clearing their homeless.

Gulfport, Mississippi, topped the list for food insecurity. More than one quarter of Gulfport residents live in poverty.

San Francisco logged the highest rate of homes with inadequate plumbing.

Lewiston, Maine, headed the list of cities with inadequate kitchens, presumably a measure of available water and electricity, rather than counter space and cupboards.

San Francisco is one of the 10 most expensive cities in the world, according to a new report from the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The report was conducted between mid-August and mid-September 2022. It’s based on a cost-of-living survey that incorporates hundreds of factors, including price of goods and services, utilities, car payments and housing. A major contributor to the skyrocketing cost of living is worldwide inflation, which the EIU measured at 8.1% year over year, the highest mark the organization has ever recorded in its two decades of digital surveys.

Topping the list of most expensive cities are New York and Singapore, which are tied. It’s the first time New York — which also now has the highest median rent prices in the United States, ahead of both San Francisco and Boston — has been given the unceremonious title. Singapore, meanwhile, has been ranked as the world’s most expensive city eight times in 10 years, according to the EIU.

In third place is Tel Aviv, followed by a fourth-place tie between Los Angeles and Hong Kong. Switzerland’s Zurich and Geneva are No. 6 and no. 7, respectively. San Francisco finally comes in at No. 8, four whole spots below LA and just above Paris (No. 9) and a tie for No. 10 between Sydney and Denmark’s Copenhagen.

Other US cities — including Atlanta; Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; Indianapolis; Portland, Oregon; and San Diego — saw significant cost-of-living jumps as well but not nearly enough to reach the same level as New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
