The chimney sweep dance in “Mary Poppins,” led by Dick van Dyk’s likeable all-rounder Burt, is reminiscent of typical blackface motifs, claims a scientist.

Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, a professor of English and gender studies at Linfield College in Oregon, explained in a New York Times article that the sequence in PL Travers' book meant “race panic.”

Pollack-Pelzner simply refers to the scene as “blacking up,” and while this may seem harmless, it has other, more disturbing connotations.

“This might seem like a harmless comic scene if Travers' novels did not associate the chimney sweeps' blackened faces with racist caricatures,” he writes.

“'Don't touch me, you black heathen,' cries a maid in Mary Poppins Opens the Door (1943), as a house broom extends its dark hand. When he tries to approach the cook, she threatens to stop: 'If that Hottentot goes into the fireplace, I'm going out the door,' she says, using an archaic insult for black South Africans that recurs in book and screen.

“The 1964 film re-enacts this racial panic in absurd fashion. As the dark figures of the chimney sweeps step onto a roof in time, a naval buffoon, Admiral Boom, shouts 'We are being attacked by Hottentots!' and orders his cannon to be fired at the 'insolent devils.'”

“We're in on the joke for what it is: these aren't real black Africans, but grinning white dancers with blackened faces. It's a parody of the black threat; it was even posted on a white nationalist website as evidence of the film's racial hierarchy. And it's not just fools like the Admiral who use this language. In the 1952 novel Mary Poppins in the Park, the nanny herself says to an exasperated young Michael, 'I understand you're acting like a Hottentot.'”

Pollack-Pelzner also pointed to other examples of archaic, racially charged language in Travers' Poppins books, which in one case even led to her books being banned from the San Francisco Public Library in the early 1980s.

Travers later rewrote the chapters in a revised edition of the book, in which Poppins, Jane and Michael Banks are abducted to a South Sea island, where the nanny uses the offensive phrase “pickaninny” and speaks in a racially charged South American dialect.

However, she later said that this was “not an apology for anything I have written, the reason is much simpler: I don't want to see Mary Poppins hidden in a closet.”

Disney has not yet commented on the matter.

But in an online post after the Times article was published, Pollack-Pelzner explained: “The main reason I wrote this article was in the hope that a Disney executive would read it, take another look at the upcoming Dumbo remake and ask if there was anything in it that was even the slightest bit racist that he should perhaps reconsider before it goes on the screen.”

“After writing this article and receiving tons of hate mail in response, I learned one thing about the alt-right: Mary Poppins definitely suits them very well!”

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco district attorney is suing the owner and occupant of a building where he says 20 people lived in squalid, unsafe conditions in the basement of a commercial laundromat.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the lawsuit filed Tuesday accuses the owner and anchor tenant of the building in the city's Mission District of violating fire, electrical, plumbing and other municipal codes.

The fire department described the building as a death trap and described the fire code violations as egregious.

Firefighters discovered the residents while responding to an emergency call on Christmas Day last year. Inside, they found exposed plumbing, leaking pipes, a functioning shower, an infestation of rats and cockroaches, and illegally partitioned rooms.

The lawsuit says the tenants were charged between $300 and $900 each.

The chimney sweep dance in Mary Poppins, led by Dick van Dyk's affable jack-of-all-trades Burt, is reminiscent of blackface themes, one academic has claimed.

In an article in the New York Times, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, a professor of English and gender studies at Linfield College in Oregon, said that the sequence in PL Travers' book means “racial panic.”

Pollack-Pelzner simply calls the scene “blackout,” and while it may seem harmless, it has other, more disturbing connotations.

“This might seem like a harmless comic scene if Travers' novels did not associate the blackened faces of chimney sweeps with racist caricatures,” he writes.

“'Don't touch me, you black heathen,' screams a maid in Mary Poppins Opens the Door (1943) as a sweep extends his dark hand. When he tries to approach the cook, she threatens to stop: “If that Hottentot goes down the chimney, I'm going out the door,” she says, using an archaic slur for black South Africans that appears repeatedly on page and screen occurs.

“The 1964 film recreates this racial panic in a bizarre tone. When the dark figures of the chimney sweeps appear in time on a roof, Admiral Boom, a naval fool, shouts: “We are being attacked by Hottentots!” and orders his cannon to be fired at the “insolent devils”.

“We’re in on the joke such as it is: These aren’t really black Africans; They are grinning white dancers in blackface. It's a parody of The Black Menace; It is even posted on a white nationalist website as evidence of the film's racial hierarchy. And it's not just fools like the Admiral who invoke this language. In the 1952 novel “Mary Poppins in the Park,” the nanny herself says to the upset young Michael, “I understand that you are behaving like a Hottentot.”

Pollack-Pelzner has also pointed out other examples of archaic, racially charged language in Travers' Poppins books, in one case her books were actually banned from the San Francisco Public Library in the early 1980s.

Travers later rewrote the chapters in a revised edition of the book, in which Poppins, Jane, and Michael Banks are transported to a South Seas island, where the nanny uses the offensive term “pickaninny” and speaks in a racially charged South American dialect.

The story goes on

However, she later said she “didn't do this as an apology for anything I've written, the reason is much simpler: I don't want to see Mary Poppins hidden in a closet.”

Disney has not yet commented on the matter.

However, after the Times article was published, Pollack-Pelzner posted online: “The main reason I wrote this article was in the hope that a Disney executive would read it, take another look at the upcoming Dumbo remake and ask “If it was there.” If it was all a bit racist, maybe they should think again before it hits the big screen.

“One thing I learned about the alt-right after writing this article and receiving countless hate messages in response: They really like Mary Poppins!”

Brooke Jenkins declared victory in the San Francisco’s District Attorney race on Wednesday after unofficial election results pointed to her win.

She secured 56% of the vote after multiple rounds of ranked-choice voting, and claimed almost 48% of votes counted so far, according to reports from city’s 514 precincts.

“It is an honor of a lifetime to be elected and I pledge that improving and promoting public safety will be my and our office’s top priority,” Jenkins wrote on Twitter.

Jenkins thanked her family, friends, campaign team and staff at the District Attorney’s office.

“We will work with city and law enforcement partners to address public safety challenges in every neighborhood that have festered for years with a renewed sense of urgency and purpose,” Jenkins said on Twitter.

Jenkins was appointed district attorney by Mayor London Breed in June after Chesa Boudin was recalled from the position.

Breed took to Twitter to extended her congratulations to Jenkins on Wednesday afternoon.

“We have a lot to do to address public safety in this city. I look forward to continuing the work Brooke and I have been doing to protect San Franciscans and uphold the law while getting at the root causes of crime,” Breed wrote in a tweet.

In second place was competitor John Hamasaki, who earned about 43.77% of ranked-choice votes. On Twitter he said he could not believe the support his team received in under three months of campaigning. “No matter how it works out, [I’m] grateful to live in the most amazing city and I will always stand with you to fight to make it better,” Hamasaki wrote on Twitter.

In case you missed it, the New York Jets were one of six NFL franchises that were given “access to self-promote and grow their respective fan bases in the UK,” according to Neil Reynolds of Sky Sports.

The Jets also posted the news on social media on December 15.

“As part of the NFL’s International Home Marketing Area initiative, we were awarded the international marketing rights to Great Britain,” says the franchise’s official Twitter account.

Together with Gang Green, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings received exclusive “home access” to Great Britain when the NFL split up various foreign countries as part of its expansion.

Craig Carton’s bold prediction

Shortly after this groundbreaking story came to light, WFAN radio personality Craig Carton of Carton & Roberts voiced a frightening thought that immediately crossed my mind while reading the UK news.

Listen to the full conversation from Carton & Roberts here.

“There’s a lot of cooking today,” Carton began, “of course the Steph Curry last night, the Travis Hunter stuff and the New York Jets, which are making their very first step in secretly moving the franchise to England.”

Co-host Evan Roberts questioned his partner’s bold claim that only made Carton double up and replied, “What do you think he’s doing?”

Carton explained, “Big surprise, there’s Woody [Johnson] lived the four years when he was ambassador to England, right? So play this through – you’re Woody Johnson, the fan base doesn’t like you, you’re deaf to their needs and wants and emotions, right? … You don’t need the Jets for your bottom line because you make all your money from Johnson & Johnson, right? So the New York Jets as a whole aren’t an important part of your financial empire – it’s an expensive one, it’s a successful one, but when you have the Jets you don’t have the Jets, Jets win, Jets lose – at the end of the day comes your fortune not therefore … So if you are that guy, and you realize from conversations that the NFL owners have had, that have built and built and built, that one day it will continue to be European expansion – it won’t happen tomorrow but one day – the NFL wasn’t hiding from that either, they want a team in London … I think whether we like it or not, it makes more sense [that] they will relocate an existing franchise. “

Roberts suggested the Jaguars instead, but Carton countered that their owner, Shad Khan, claimed he would never move his team out of Jacksonville permanently.

It’s not all bad, however, the popular NYC host explained the silver lining.

“So you take a team that we’re more angry than happy with, and you tell the Jets fans – listen, we’re moving the Jets to England, we’re giving you a brand new [expansion] Team, it doesn’t get worse. The jets haven’t won anything in 50 years, we hate the owner, we share a stadium with the New York Giants, we’re the little brother! We now have a chance, a new franchise – and we keep the naming rights, the New York Jets, by the way – and we’ve got the new stadium up somewhere in the five boroughs and we’re all happy about it. the [original] Jets go to London, they change their name like the Browns when they became the Ravens, and five years later nobody cares about their asses, ”he sketched.

At that point, Roberts (a die-hard Jets fan) actually began to agree with Carton that he may have “sold” him.

Sounds a bit tempting:

Not a Johnson property.

A new stadium in Queens.

And the same Jets name.

Unfortunately, the list would travel to the UK with one of the team’s fan favorites. That may not mean much to some, but for those who believe in rebuilding Joe Douglas, alluring prospects like Zach Wilson, Elijah Moore, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Bryce Hall, and Michael Carter among others would disappear.

And as Roberts later pointed out – knowing the luck of the Jets, Johnson would take the team right to the cusp of the epic turn we have all been waiting for.

“It’s so transparent to me,” stressed Carton, “Woody Johnson would like to change his home address back to London.”

Like I said, it’s a scary thought, but it’s also one that a lot of fans are likely to be thinking.

“Second Home” Details

Commenting on the deal, Jets President Hymie Elhai said, “International marketing is clearly a tremendous growth opportunity for both the NFL and the Jets. We are excited to bring our players and coaches and their personalities to the UK. Through base programs, unique market activations and strategic partnerships, we look forward to building on our fan base in the UK and look forward to building long-term relationships. “

To be clear, a lot of teams have international houses all over the world, and that’s how everything has developed so far.

The NFL has awarded teams to international home markets. As part of a long-term strategic effort to build their global brands while driving the international growth of NFL fans, the teams had to apply for exclusive marketing rights for areas around the world. Here’s how it collapses: pic.twitter.com/hWXuL72wYG

– Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) December 15, 2021

Reynolds (of Sky Sports) further stated, “Under the International HMA program, clubs have access to international markets for at least five years, during which time a club has the right to engage in activities in that international market in accordance with what they can do in their domestic HMA. This includes personal and digital marketing, corporate sponsorship sales, fan events and activations, merchandise sales, and co-marketing relationships with other sports and entertainment offerings in the market. “

Right now, that initiative seems like nothing more than an NFL and owners financial opportunity grabbing money, but Carton is making some eerily valid points.

Johnson already has strong ties to London. So would it really shock anyone if they one day left town to become the first UK-based franchise to make NFL history?

Not us, but let me be clear – if it ever did, such a departure would be unforgivable. This loyal fan base definitely deserves better.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – New national figures released showing initial jobless claims fell to 184,000 in the week ending December 4, the lowest since September 1969, according to the Department of Labor.

But California is bucking the trend.

“This morning we had 20 percent of the new jobless claims in the country, while we only got about 11.7 percent of the
civilian workforce, ”said Michael Bernick, labor attorney and former head of the state’s employment development department.

Bernick says several COVID-related factors contribute to California’s oversized proportion of the country’s unemployed.

“Sustained effects of the very strict closings and the impact on our small business economy as well as the heightened concerns about COVID and its variants, childcare and uncertainty about schools,” said Bernick.

Large office buildings and corporate headquarters in downtown San Jose remain largely empty.

CONTINUE READING: UPDATE: Person dies after being dragged out of water near China Beach, San Francisco

With COVID posing a persistent health threat, companies have postponed plans to return to the office more than once. This has created a ghost town effect on the streets and in restaurants like 4th Street Pizza.

“It still has a profound effect on us,” said Josh McGhie, co-owner of 4th Street Pizza. “I mean, downtown San Jose used to be a busy area. There are very few people out here now. “

Fewer people in the office mean fewer people on the sidewalk buying food, shopping or needing services. That means reduced working hours for small businesses and their employees.

In addition, there is a segment of the California workforce that is slow to return to work, even when jobs are available.

“Young people, it seems, don’t want a job. It’s definitely hard to hire people, ”said McGhie.

MORE NEWS: Family and friends gather to look out for the beloved security guard Kevin Nishita. to remember

It makes it difficult especially for small businesses, which McGhie says are still operating in survival mode.

Mary Poppins (Image: Disney)

The chimney sweep dance in Mary Poppins, led by Dick van Dyk’s affable jack-of-all-trades Burt, goes back to “blackface” tropes, claims an academic.

In an article in the New York Times, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, Professor of English and Professor of Gender Studies at Linfield College, Oregon, said the sequence in PL Travers’ book means “Racial Panic”.

Pollack-Pelzner flatly calls the scene ‘blacking-up’, and while it may seem harmless, it has other more disturbing connotations.

“This could seem like a harmless comic scene if Travers’ novels didn’t associate the blackened faces of the chimney sweeps with racist caricature,” he writes.

“’Don’t touch me, you black pagan,’ yells a housemaid in Mary Poppins Opens the Door (1943) when a wave extends his dark hand. When he tries to approach the cook, she threatens to stop: “If this Hottentot goes into the chimney, I’ll go out the door,” she says with an archaic bow for black South Africans that keeps coming back on the page and screen.

“The 1964 film repeats that racial panic in a comical tone. As the dark figures of the chimney sweeps step on a roof in time, a sailor’s car, Admiral Boom, shouts, ‘We are being attacked by the Hottentots!’ and orders his cannon to be fired at the ‘cheeky devils’.

“We’re kidding the way it is: They’re not really black Africans; they are grinning white dancers with black faces. It’s a parody of the black menace; it is even posted on a white nationalist website as evidence of the film’s racial hierarchy. And it’s not just fools like the admiral who refer to this language. In the novel Mary Poppins in the Park, published in 1952, the nanny herself said to an angry young Michael: ‘I understand that you are acting like a Hottentot.’ “

Pollack-Pelzner has also pointed to other examples of archaic, racially charged language in Travers’ Poppins books, where her books were actually banned from the San Francisco Public Library in the early 1980s.

The story goes on

Travers later rewrote the chapters in a revised edition of the book in which Poppins and Jane and Michael Banks were transported to a South Sea island where the nanny used the offensive term “Pickaninny” and spoke in a racially charged South American dialect.

However, she later said that she “did not do this as an apology for everything I wrote, the reason is much simpler: I do not want Mary Poppins to be hidden in a closet”.

Disney has not yet commented on this.

However, Pollack-Pelzner posted online after the article was published in The Times: “The main reason I wrote this article was to hope that a Disney manager would read it, re-see the upcoming Dumbo remake, and ask if it’s there was all just a little bit racist that you might want to reconsider before it hits the big screen.

“After writing this article and receiving tons of hateful messages in response, I learned one thing about the alt-right: They like Mary Poppins!”
