The San Francisco Giants have moved their disaster recovery system for critical data, files and video to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Bill Schlough, Chief Information Officer of the San Francisco Giants, said the Giants, which have been using cloud technology for more than 15 years, switched to OCI from AWS because it is faster and less expensive.

The team has more than 200 terabytes of video that it uses for scouting and player development, and for in-stadium programming. They store the video on OCI for backup and disaster recovery purposes. Bill Schlough says he expects the team to increase the amount and scope of cloud computing it uses.

The Giants use a combination of video and analytics to measure player performances and to evaluate amateur and pro players on the team and for training purposes. It also uses video for entertainment at the stadium and through interactive devices.

Bill Schlough noted that the increased usage and resolution of video is leading to a greater need for storage and compute capacity in the cloud.

“It’s no longer about moving to the cloud and Oracle’s in the cloud. Oracle has to be the best provider in the cloud because everybody’s in the cloud going forward,” Bill Schlough said.

The Giants switched out its point-of-sale system, which was only three years old, to Oracle MICROS Simphony Cloud POS, because payment systems have evolved quickly and the organization needed to make it easier for customers to order and pay for food, drinks , and other concession items.

Oracle’s cloud-based system will also make it easier for the organization to determine if it has the right mix of products available in the right quantities and will allow the team to change prices more nimbly to support promotions throughout the season.

The Giants will use cloud technology to access and analyze data from a variety of touchpoints – from the POS screens to smartphones people use to make payments – to help them gain a better understanding of what people are buying, when they are buying it, which concession stand they are using.

Running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Simphony will provide the venue with the fast insights it needs to make informed decisions based on what is happening across inventory, pricing, and promotions. For example, if a popular promotion leads to an out-of-stock item, it will automatically be reflected on the park’s digital menu boards and mobile devices. Conversely, ballpark staff can also see if there is a surplus of a certain food and decide to run a new promotion to accelerate sales.

Additionally, to increase reliability and reduce costs, the Giants migrated their disaster recovery solution for important files and data, including their essential video environment, from AWS to OCI. The Giants’ 200 terabytes of video is a critical piece of the team’s winning formula and is used to measure player performance, to enhance training programs, and to evaluate players for scouting purposes. The Giants also use the video for in-park entertainment to ensure fans have the best possible experience at Oracle Park.

Preparing for a curveball
With the Oracle restaurant POS at its foundation, Oracle Park will be able to quickly adapt to any concession related situation that comes its way. For example, ballpark staff can easily integrate and alter loyalty, promotion, and concession services through Simphony to adapt how it engages with fans before, during, and after the game. In future seasons, Oracle Park will implement self-service kiosks and grab-and-go checkout locations to add more convenience and choice for park-goers.

For those of you who are rusty on your Ancient Greek, pyro refers to fire, and pyrocumulonimbus clouds are, in fact, cloud formations created by forest fires.

Pyrocumulus clouds are similar to the cumulus clouds that humans are used to. They arise when hot air pushes moisture up from plants, soil and air, where it cools and condenses. The centers of these “pyro clouds” have strongly rising air.

It’s fairly common, and it’s a warning sign that firefighters on the ground could face unpredictable and dangerous conditions from the drafts of air toward the center of the fire. One that rose from the Creek Fire in California last week could be the largest ever recorded on US soil, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The formations can be so damaging that NASA once called them the “fire-breathing cloud kite”.

“PyroCb storms send their smoke like a chimney into the earth’s stratosphere, with persistent negative effects,” NASA explained in an overview of the phenomenon.

In some cases, the pyro clouds can reach 30,000 feet and create lightning bolts. There is evidence that pyrocumulus lightning bolts may have started new flames during the devastating firestorm in Australia in 2009 known as Black Friday.

Similar to how cumulonimbus clouds create tornadoes, these pyro clouds can create fire-induced eddies of ash, smoke, and often flames that can be destructive.

Additional destruction is the last thing California needs right now. More than three million hectares have already been burned this year. The peak of the state’s traditional fire season is yet to come.

LONDON – Several major websites went offline briefly on Tuesday after an apparent outage at cloud service provider Fastly, and there were still reports of sporadic disruptions after the company fixed the problem about an hour later.

Dozens of websites, including the New York Times, CNN, Twitch, Reddit, the Guardian and the UK government website, were down.

Fastly of San Francisco confirmed a problem just before 1000 GMT. Repeated updates to its website stated that “the issue is still being investigated”.

About an hour later, the company said, “The problem has been identified and a solution has been applied. Customers may experience an increased origin load when global services return.”

A number of websites that were affected early appeared to be back online.

Some visitors trying to access CNN.com received a message that said, “Fastly error: unknown domain: cnn.com.” Attempts to access the Financial Times website returned a similar message during visits to the The New York Times website and the UK government website gov.uk returned the message “Error 503 Service Unavailable” along with the line “Varnish Cache Server”, which is a technology on which Fastly is built.

Down Detector, tracking internet outages, said, “Reports suggest that Fastly may be experiencing a widespread outage that can affect your service.”

Fastly describes itself as an “edge cloud platform”. so users can get them faster and smoother instead of having to access the site’s original server.

LONDON – Numerous websites were temporarily unavailable on Tuesday morning after an apparently widespread failure at the cloud service provider Fastly.

Dozens of high traffic websites including the New York Times, CNN, Twitch, Hulu, HBO Max and the UK government homepage could not be reached. According to Down Detector, a website that tracks internet issues, Reddit had received more than 20,000 reports of problems loading the app and website.

San Francisco-based Fastly admitted a “service configuration problem” and said in repeated updates to its website that it was “continuing to investigate” and work on a solution.

The problem appeared to be resolved at around 4 a.m. PDT Tuesday.

Visitors who previously tried to access CNN.com received a message that said, “Fastly error: unknown domain: cnn.com.”

Attempts to access the Financial Times website resulted in a similar message, while visits to the New York Times website and the UK government website gov.uk received “Error 503 Service Unavailable” along with the line “Varnish Cache Server” which is a technology on which Fastly is built.

Down Detector, tracking internet outages, said, “Reports are suggesting that there may be a widespread outage at Fastly that could affect your service.”

Fastly describes itself as an “edge cloud platform”. It provides vital behind the scenes cloud computing services to many of the high profile websites on the internet by helping them store or “cache” content on servers around the world so they are closer to users.

The list of tech companies leaving the Bay Area or downsizing their office space is a little longer now.

Snowflake, a cloud software company, is no longer headquartered in San Mateo, as the San Francisco Business Times first reported. Bozeman, Montana, will replace the Silicon Valley address as the new “main business office”.

The strange title was chosen because the company stated that it no longer had a headquarters at all, but instead advocated a globally distributed workforce. In an earnings call this week, executives said they chose Bozeman because the Securities and Exchange Commission required corporations to appoint a chief executive officer. Since both CEO Frank Slootman and CFO Mike Scarpelli are based in the mountain town, the Montana address made more sense.

The San Mateo office remains open and the company employs 983 people in the Bay Area, according to LinkedIn.

Many other high profile tech companies took steps in 2021 and 2020. Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced in 2020 that it would move its headquarters to Houston, although the San Jose campus was retained. Oracle, based in Redwood City, is also moving to Texas and is choosing Austin as the headquarters for its “more flexible workplace policy.” Digital Realty, a data center company, also announced that it will move to Austin earlier this year.

Meanwhile, other large companies have reduced their space. Salesforce, the city’s largest private employer, canceled its 325,000-square-foot lease for the undeveloped Parcel F tower in the Transbay neighborhood of San Francisco in March.
