It is with great pride that Chancellor & Dean David Faigman formally announces that as of January 1, 2023, the former UC Hastings College of the Law has a new name—University of California College of the Law, San Francisco.

“Our new name accurately reflects our law school through its geographic location and recognizes it as an anchor institution in the City of San Francisco, where we’ve proudly made our home since its founding in 1878,” Faigman said.

Starting Jan. 1, the law school will be called UC College of the Law, San Franciscoor UC Law SF. Its signs, official seal, and other branded materials will begin to reflect the new name at the start of the new year. A full transition for all building signs and additional renaming needs is expected to be completed within six months.

On September 23, 2022, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law to change the state Education Code to adopt the College’s new name.

On December 30, 2022, State Superior Court Judge Richard Ulmer ruled that a lawsuit filed by a small group of alumni and descendants of the law school’s founder could not enjoin the law school from using its new name.

Since 2017, the College has studied the actions of its founder, Serranus Hastings, and the harms he committed against the Round Valley Tribes and Yuki People. As a result of the findings and several hearings with affected Indigenous People, alumni, students, staff, and faculty, in the fall of 2021, the College’s Board of Directors voted to rename the school. In July 2022, the Board unanimously chose UC College of the Law, San Francisco as its new name. This was followed by a vote by the state Legislature that overwhelmingly approved Assembly Bill 1936 that changed the state Education Code to adopt the College’s new name.

Chancellor & Dean David Faigman has told the law school community that the renaming of the law school is an integral part of restorative justice efforts that have included opening an Indigenous Law Center and providing legal assistance to California tribes through law school fellowships. He said, “Renaming our school is an important component of the College’s efforts towards addressing the impact of our founder and first dean, especially the harms committed against the Yuki People.”

UC College of the Law, San Francisco, remains a law school dedicated to academic excellence, experiential learning, social justice, and its students continue to succeed as attorneys and are found in all areas of public service, private law firms, government, leadership, and education. We are proud of our many notable graduates, including Vice President Kamala Harris and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.

For any questions about the new name, or photographs of our new seal or wordmark, please contact Chief Communications Officer Elizabeth Moore at: mooreelizabeth@uchastings.edu or 415-703-8266.

Football season is very much still in full swing. The weather is starting to change and we are getting some perfect fall weather over the last week or so. However, basketball is right around the corner. In fact, the college basketball season tips officially off in just 25 days. Monday, November 7th will be here before you know it. Likely preseason Top 10 team Baylor is among the group that will tip off the season at noon EST with a huge slate of games to follow on opening day.

In honor of hitting the 25-day-out mark, let’s begin by taking a look at five of the biggest storylines entering the 2022-2023 season. Every five days we will release five more headlines and ultimately reach a total of 25 when the season begins on the 7th of November. As Jon Rothstein would say: And Here. we Go.

New Faces on the Sidelines at Power Programs

Don’t worry college basketball fans, the Mike Krzyzewski farewell tour is over. However, the Duke Blue Devils still promise to be one of the most talked about teams this upcoming season. 35-year-old Jon Scheyer takes over at his alma mater and will likely have a preseason top 5 team. He played a big role in landing the top-ranked recruiting class and those freshmen will make an instant impact.

It isn’t just Blue Devils who made headlines with a coaching change though. At Villanova, Jay Wright decided to forgo a season-long retirement celebration in favor of announcing his surprise departure from the sport on April 20th at age 60. The Wildcats also went with a familiar face, hiring Wright’s long-time assistant Kyle Neptune.

Time will tell if these two new head coaches can find the same success that Hubert Davis experienced in his first season taking over for legendary North Carolina boss Roy Williams. However, we do know that all eyes around college basketball with be on Duke and Villanova early in the season.

Reigning National Player of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe Returns

You didn’t really think we would get further than this without mentioning the Wildcats, did you? This is Kentucky Sports Radio after all. On paper, it seems shocking that Oscar Tshiebwe would return to college basketball after sweeping the national player of the year awards. Only Ralph Sampson in 1982 and Tyler Hansbrough in 2008 have done the same. However, as a projected second-round NBA draft pick, it made sense for Tshiebwe to return. When you factor in the Name, Image, and Likeness money he is set to earn in Lexington and it is very likely that Kentucky’s big man is making more as a collegiate player than he would have as a professional.

Southeastern Conference Hires Six New Head Coaches

The head coaching changes at Duke and Villanova certainly dominated the college basketball offseason. However, the Southeastern Conference made a lot of waves in its own right by turning over nearly half of the league’s head jobs. Chris Jans (New Mexico State -> Mississippi State), Lamont Paris (Chattanooga -> South Carolina), Todd Golden (San Francisco -> Florida), Matt McMahon (Murray State -> LSU), Mike White (Florida -> Georgia) , and Dennis Gates (Cleveland State -> Missouri) filled the six open SEC jobs.

  High Scoring Guards Chasing Records

Detroit guard Antonio Davis has already broken into college basketball’s all-time top 25 scoring leaders with 2,734 points. The prolific guard will surpass the 3,000-point milestone and could finish as high as second all-time.

Additionally, last season’s second-leading scorer in the country, Darius McGhee, returns to Liberty after scoring 24.6 points per game. The 5’9″ guard has 1,864 career points and will easily crack the 2,000-point threshold.

Oral Roberts guard Max Abmas has returned to college basketball as well after back-to-back All-American Honorable Mention seasons. The 6’1″ guard has scored 1,818 points in just three seasons so far. Playing at the mid-major level these guys don’t always get national attention, but they are all worth the price of admission.

How Many Forwards/Centers Can We Fit on an All-American List?

Everyone has their own opinions on how All-Conference or All-American lists should be constructed. Is it the five best players regardless of position? Do you need to be able to actually put this team of five players on the floor in a real-life basketball game? Or, does it even need to consist of only five players to begin with? Those questions will be challenged this season as traditional big men are officially back at the forefront of college basketball.

Oscar Tshiebwe, the consensus National Player of the Year from last season, is back at Kentucky. He’s a lock to be a preseason first-team All-American. Drew Timme, is back at Gonzaga after two consecutive All-American seasons. The 6’10” forward is also a lock to be a preseason First Team All-American. 6’10” forward Armando Bacot is back for his senior season at North Carolina. All he did last year was earn First Team All-ACC honors and lead North Carolina to the national championship game. In the tournament, Bacot averaged 15.3 points and 16.5 rebounds per game. He is almost assuredly going to be a preseason First-Team All-American. That marks three traditional, back-to-the-basket forwards on the list.

Tshiebwe, Timme, and Bacot deserve first-team honors, but we haven’t even mentioned the player who has arguably gotten as much hype as anyone this offseason. Trayce Jackson Davis at Indiana elected to return after averaging 18.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game in ’21-22. He is a big reason why the Hoosiers have become a trendy Top 15 team in the country and will likely lead to him being placed on plenty of preseason All-American ballots. Also, 7’1″ center Hunter Dickinson is back at Michigan after a season of 18.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He’s a likely All-American who has to battle with Jackson-Davis to even be the best at his position in the Big Ten. Then there is 7’4″ behemoth Zach Edey at Purdue. Edey averaged 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds as a sophomore and will likely be the focal point of the boilermakers this season.

With shoutouts to Dereck Lively II (duke) Ryan Kalkbrenner (Creighton), Colin Castleton (Florida), and Adam Sanogo (UConn), there are certainly plenty of worthy big men in college basketball this season. It will be interesting to see how media members handle the All-Conference and All-American lists.

A candidate running in November’s election for the board governing City College of San Francisco posted controversial views condemning critical race theory, often referred to as CRT, in a since-deleted tweet.

The revelation on Twitter of a prior comment by board trustee candidate Marie Hurabiell is now prompting a Democratic club in the city to reopen discussions on their endorsement for her, the club’s president told KQED.

In the tweet, which was published in May 2021, Hurabiell wrote, “CRT was a tactic used by Hitler and the KKK.” These were not her words; Rather, Hurabiell was amplifying the words of a speaker at a school board meeting in Loudoun County, Va.

A screenshot of a now-deleted tweet from board trustee candidate Marie Hurabiell published in May 2021. (Twitter)

Then, Hurabiell added, in her own words, “Gratitude to this strong and passionate parent for fighting this dangerous nonsense.”

Critical race theory is at an academic school of thought teaching how racism is baked into the systems and policies of the United States. It entered the national spotlight last year as a bogeyman of conservatives looking to lambaste local school boards. Striking critical race theory from school campuses is among a number of efforts by conservatives to reform school boards across the country over the past year, including banning books promoting racial equity and LGBTQ+ themes.

Outrage against CRT is usually reserved for screeds on ultraconservative websites like Breitbart, or on President Donald Trump’s social network, Truth Social. It’s certainly not an everyday talking point in liberal San Francisco.

The Virginia school board meeting took place amid heated rhetoric against critical race theory from then-gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin. After he won the race, Youngkin issued an executive order to end “inherently divisive concepts,” which he billed as a way to end critical race theory from being taught in K-12 schools.

Fanning flames against critical race theory was central to Republicans in his race, but in Democratic San Francisco, Hurabiell may have found a sympathetic ear for those views from people wishing to recall several local school board members.

In the deleted tweet, Hurabiell tagged numerous accounts, including an account of the San Francisco Board of Education recall called @recallsfboe that belongs to a group now called the SF Guardians. That group worked to successfully recall school board commissioners Gabriela López, Alison Collins and Faauuga Moliga.

“I think it was a really stupid thing that I said,” Hurabiell told KQED. “I think it was really stupid that I retweeted it and I’m extremely apologetic for that.”

Hurabiell said she believes systemic racism is a “real problem” in the country.

“In my life I have not spent a lot of time digging into CRT, but I’m trying to understand it better now,” she said. “I’m always open to being wrong.”

When asked if she usually calls things she doesn’t know about “dangerous nonsense,” she responded, “I don’t routinely talk about things that I’m not terribly familiar with.”

Hurabiell is an eighth-generation San Franciscan and has been an attorney since the 1990s. She also serves on the Georgetown University Board of Regents. An ardent supporter of the recall campaigns of the three San Francisco Board of Education members and District Attorney Chesa Boudin, she also is a member of the nonprofit Stop Crime SF, which was started by Board of Supervisors candidate Joel Engardio.

Adele Failes-Carpenter, political director for the City College of San Francisco faculty union, AFT Local 2121, said Hurabiell’s views are out of step with the college’s mission.

“We need public education to keep our commitment to ending racism at the center of our work,” she said. “Anyone who is participating in open, reactionary attacks on critical examinations of the history of race and racism in this country is not in a position to help us do that work.”

Hurabiell has been endorsed by at least two local Democratic clubs in their race so far this year: the Eastern Neighborhoods Democratic Club and the United Democratic Club. These endorsements can be especially key in political races that don’t have as much funding, like down-ballot college board races.

When reached by text, Eastern Neighborhoods Democratic Club President Bruce Agid said he was not aware of Hurabiell’s tweet about critical race theory, and that he would discuss her views with his club’s board. Bobak Esfandiari, president of the United Democratic Club, did not answer texts inquiring about the club’s endorsement of Hurabiell.

Failes-Carpenter said the clubs should reconsider their endorsements.

“I would ask them to stand by students and by public educators that have committed to fighting racism within our public institutions and within our educational institutions, by not endorsing and supporting candidates who are openly hostile to anti-racist analyzes and anti-racist teaching, ” she said.

The endorsement of Hurabiell by two Democratic clubs may be an odd choice for another reason: For two decades Hurabiell was a Republican. She was appointed to the Presidio Trust Board of Directors, where she served for three years, by former President Donald Trump in 2018.

Records from the San Francisco Department of Elections show she was a registered Republican in San Francisco from at least 2000, which is as far back as more easily accessible records could reveal. She changed her party preference to Democrat on Aug. 18, 2022 — six days after she filed paperwork to run for the City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees.

San Francisco Democratic Party Chair Honey Mahogany said the organization’s bylaws do not specify how long someone needs to be registered as a Democrat before a Democratic club can endorse them. Furthermore, Democratic clubs are allowed to endorse someone of any party in nonpartisan races, like for City College’s Board of Trustees.

Hurabiell would have had an uphill battle running for office advertising herself as a Republican in San Francisco, where the party is widely disfavored in local elections.

San Francisco has no elected Republicans in office. The last Republican elected in San Francisco was the late James Fang, who formerly sat on the BART Board of Directors. He was first elected in 1990 and served until his defeat in 2014.

Hurabiell said she changed her party registration after joining a group called “No Labels,” and finding moderate Democrats who agreed with her on issues, but disliked her being known as a Republican Party member.

“We just wanted to solve problems. We just wanted to work together and effect positive change in our community,” she said.

The San Francisco Chronicle praised Hurabiell during her 2020 run for the college board — which she lost — endorsing her for “fiscal savvy.” Indeed, in her interview with KQED, she professed a desire to set City College on a fiscally solvent path, and expressed concern that too many classes that are still being offered are under-enrolled.

When Hurabiell said she didn’t know much about CRT, we asked whether she believed in other progressive causes that may be valued at City College, like the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I’m not sure I fully understand that movement,” she said, repeating her same explanation for having no stance on CRT. While the death of George Floyd left her “disgusted and devastated,” she said, “I want to say yes to that, but again I’m not sure I understand enough about it.”

Responding to Hurabiell’s repeated claims of not understanding both CRT and the Black Lives Matter movement, Jane Kim, state director of the California Working Families Party — who championed and won free City College tuition during her time on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors — bristled.

“Listen, it is one thing for an individual in our society or to say that they don’t know a lot about critical race theory or Black Lives Matter, but if you are a candidate that is running to represent over 800,000 residents of San Francisco , many of whom are people of color, then I think that it is your job to understand those things,” Kim said. “If you don’t understand the Black community, the Latino community, API community, then you shouldn’t be running for office.”

Fewer students means fewer dollars to pay for teachers, and the college is now facing a $5.8 million deficit in its 2025-2026 fiscal year, according to The SF Standard.

Despite the start of new programs like Free City College, which offers free tuition to San Francisco residents, other factors soon compounded the existing drop in student population, including a statewide community college enrollment plunge during the pandemic. A CalMatters analysis found that, at 42 out of 116 California community colleges, more students left in the fall of 2021 than in the fall of 2020. That comprised a statewide loss of more than 300,000 students, which California tried to correct by spending an extra $120 million.

A coalition of unions has tried to pitch tax proposals to stem the gap, including Service Employees International Union 1021, which also represents City College of San Francisco workers and met with Mayor London Breed in February to propose new tax mechanisms to raise dollars for CCSF.

Bravewoman said those efforts are ongoing. Right now, it looks like the funding mechanism may be a parcel tax that’s shaped to affect new home buyers, as opposed to existing homeowners, that may raise as much as $45 million a year. Polling shows strong support for the measure, she said. The unions will soon begin the signature-gathering effort.

“We’re confident we’ll be successful at the polls,” she said.

In the meantime, the recent cuts are striking departments of all sorts, affecting everything from workforce training courses like aircraft maintenance and auto mechanics, to classes needed to transfer to four-year schools, like chemistry and English.

Pink slips — layoff notices — already have been mailed.

CCSF teachers and students block Frida Kahlo Way at the entrance to CCSF’s main campus to protest layoffs at the school, on May 5, 2022. (Beth LaBerge/KQED)

At the May Day rally and march in San Francisco on Sunday, City College faculty who’d been served with pink slips spoke out.

Golnar Afshar, a full-time biotechnology teacher, told KQED she got her pink slip in February. Afshar is one of only three faculties in the biotechnology program. Now those students will have fewer classes available to complete their learning.

Most of Afshar’s students are older and changing their careers. They have bachelor’s degrees but need to fulfill hands-on training experience to get laboratory jobs — a highly sought-after career path in the Bay Area, which Afshar called “the Mecca of biotechnology in the world.” Now those students may have a tougher path.

“I have no idea what’s going to happen,” she said. “If the classes are canceled, the students will not be able to finish up.”

And for Afshar, who is 55 and was looking toward retirement in the next decade, “I’m just going to have to start looking for a job.”

The news of Jaren Holmes’ departure from the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team came late Friday night, and a day later, the guard confirmed he will enter the transfer portal after three seasons with the Bonnies.

The program didn’t waste time finding a replacement, though. Guard Daryl Banks III announced Sunday he will transfer to Bona after three seasons at Saint Peter’s. And Monday, Marcus Hammond ended more than a month of speculation as to his next destination, when the former Niagara guard announced he would join Notre Dame as a graduate transfer.

The moves were part of a busy stretch for transfers to leave or join Big 4 men’s and women’s basketball programs, and expect a flurry of last-minute movement this week because the deadline for athletes in fall and winter sports to enter the transfer portal without having to sit out a season, unless they are granted a waiver that provides immediate eligibility, is Sunday.

In all, at least 20 players from Big 4 men’s teams and at least 10 players from Big 4 women’s teams have entered the portal as of 8 pm Monday, either confirming their transfer or having it reported by various outlets. Additionally, at least 13 men and two women from Big 4 programs have yet to announce their next destinations.

According to Stadium, more than 1,250 men’s basketball players who were on scholarship this past season are in the transfer portal.

The NCAA on Monday released a dashboard that displays Division I transfer portal data for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years. Of the 1,692 men’s basketball players who entered the portal in 2020-21, 63% transferred to NCAA schools.

According to The Athletic, as of April 12, 1,143 women’s basketball players were in the transfer portal following the 2021-22 season.

According to NCAA data, of the 1,134 women’s basketball players who entered the portal in 2020-21, 63% transferred to NCAA schools.

Here’s a look at some of the recent movement – and moves that could come soon – among Big 4 men’s and women’s basketball players who have entered the transfer portal or have joined Big 4 schools.

New UB women’s coach Becky Burke continues to fill a roster that was depleted by transfers out of the school with incoming players, including Kiara Johnson, a 6-foot-2 forward from Tonawanda who is a Cardinal O’Hara graduate. UB announced Johnson’s transfer Monday.

She was a second-team All-Western New York selection in 2018, played for two seasons at Eastern Michigan and for one season at Towson, but did not play last season. Johnson averaged 4.0 points and 4.4 rebounds in 76 games in three seasons with Eastern Michigan and Towson.

Dyaisha Fair entered the transfer portal March 28, but has not yet announced her transfer destination. Fair, a guard who was fourth in the nation in scoring last season (23.4 points per game), recently posted on her social media accounts that she has visited Baylor and South Carolina, the defending national champion.

Three women’s players — guard Georgia Woolley, forward Saniaa Wilson and guard Cheyenne McEvans — have followed former UB coach Felicia Legette-Jack to Syracuse.

On the men’s side, Tra’Von Fagan, a forward who played for UB for the last four seasons, will transfer to UMBC, according to CBSSports.com.

Canisius is dipping into the portal and the junior-college ranks to replenish its lineup, after five players from the 2021-22 roster entered the transfer portal.

The Griffs added Tre Dinkins on Sunday. The 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 15.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 34 games this season for Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He joins Jamir Moultrie, a 6-1 guard from Kennesaw State, and Sarion McGee, a 6-8 forward who has played at Grambling and Logan CC in Carterville, Ill.

Of the five who entered the portal, two will head to new programs: Malek Green will enroll at Youngstown State, and, according to multiple reports, Armon Harried will transfer to Binghamton.

Hammond is among five Purple Eagles who have entered the portal, and is the second to announce his transfer choice. Guard Raheem Solomon has announced his transfer to Sacred Heart.

Niagara has added Keith Kiner, a 6-6 junior college forward from Three Rivers Junior College in Missouri.

Banks’ transfer to Bona came two days after Moses Flowers, a guard from Hartford, announced he would join the Bonnies as a transfer.

Banks averaged 11.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in 34 games at Saint Peter’s this season, but drew plenty of attention in the NCAA Tournament. In the Peacocks’ 85-79 first-round upset of Kentucky, the 6-foot-3 guard scored 27 points. He averaged 13.5 points in four tournament games.

Quadry Adams confirmed Monday he has entered the portal. Stadium.com reported that Abdoul-Karim Coulibaly, who played one season for the Bonnies, will transfer to UMass-Lowell.

OAKLAND — A man has been arrested in the fatal highway shooting of Gene Ransom, a basketball star at the University of California, Berkeley in the 1970s and a member of the Cal Athletics hall of fame.

A 25-year-old San Francisco resident, Juan Angel Garcia, was arrested Saturday and could face a murder charge in connection with the shooting Friday evening on Interstate 880 in Oakland, the California Highway Patrol said. It wasn’t known Sunday if Garcia had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

The victim was driving near the Broadway exit when he was shot, causing him to veer his Honda sedan and crash into a guardrail, the highway patrol said in a statement. The man was struck at least once and died in his car, the highway patrol said.

Ransom, 65, was on his way to pick up his girlfriend at a West Oakland train station, said Doug Harris, a former teammate and longtime friend.

Harris told KPIX-TV in San Francisco that the woman waited for ransom for hours, “not knowing that he had been murdered.”

Highway patrol investigators said the victim was likely targeted and the motive appeared to be road rage. Northbound lanes of I-880 were shut for about five hours during the investigation.

Just 5-feet-9-inches (1.8 meters) tall, Ransom was a standout player at Berkeley High School and went on to be a star point guard at Cal in the late 1970s, where he averaged 14.8 points per game and had 356 assists during a three-year career, KPIX said.

“We are shocked to hear the reports that Cal Athletics Hall of Famer Gene Ransom has been identified as a victim in a deadly freeway shooting,” Cal Athletics assistant director of communications Gerrit Van Genderen said in a statement Saturday. “Gene was one of the greatest players in our men’s basketball program’s history and he will be greatly missed.”

Ransom was signed by the Golden State Warriors in 1979 but was cut in the preseason.

Harris said that over the past 20 years he and Ransom had been coaching basketball and working with kids to get them away from gun violence.

“The very thing that we worked so hard for is what took him away. It’s really tough for me as I reflect back,” Harris told KPIX. “Gene was a heroic figure that was loved by everyone.”

Several people have been killed in recent freeway shootings in Oakland. Last month, an Alameda County sheriff’s recruit was fatally shot on Interstate 580 on Jan. 4 as he drove home from the academy. Authorities said David V. Nguyen, 28, was set to graduate from the academy this month.

In November, a 23-month-old toddler from Fremont was killed by a stray bullet while his family traveled south on Interstate 880 in Oakland. Also in November, a passenger in an SUV that was traveling on Interstate 80 in Oakland was killed during a shooting on the freeway near the Bay Bridge toll plaza.

Mike Krzyzewski’s farewell tour continues, and Hubert Davis’ first March Madness dance has been extended.

The men’s basketball teams from Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill survived the first weekend and are advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Second-seeded Duke beat Cal State Fullerton and Michigan State in Greenville, South Carolina, while the No. 8 Tar Heels topped Marquette and top-seed Baylor in Fort Worth, Texas.

According to NCAA.com, there are no perfect fan-picked brackets left.

Should the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels win both of their next two games, they’ll face each other in the Final Four. The two bitter rivals have never met before in the NCAA Tournament. They split games this past regular season.

Here’s how Duke and UNC won this past weekend, and what lies ahead for them.

Duke

Duke forward Wendell Moore Jr. during the second half of a college basketball game in the second round of the NCAA tournament Sunday, March 20, 2022, in Greenville, SC

First Win: The Blue Devils beat no. 15 Cal State Fullerton on Friday, 78-61. Five Duke players scored in double-digits, but Paolo Banchero – the ACC Rookie of the Year – led the way with 17 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Mark Williams had 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five blocks. As a team, Duke blocked 10 shots, his most in a first-round NCAA Tournament game.

Second win: Duke beat no. 7 Michigan State 85-76 on Sunday. Again, five Duke players scored in double figures, and again, Banchero powered the Blue Devils with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Williams had 15 points, eight boards and five blocks. Duke is now 14-4 all-time vs. Michigan State.

Fun Fact: Mike Krzyzewski will coach in the Sweet 16 for the 26th time. No other coach in the history of Division I men’s basketball has appeared in the second weekend of the tournament more than Coach K.

They Said It: “Look, I’m 75. To have moments like that, you’ve got to be kidding me. Really, how damn lucky can you be to be in that? And I want to share it. I don’t want to sit down and say, ‘You guys enjoy it.’ I want to be in the party a little bit. That’s the enjoyment I’ve got; (that) I’ve had for 47 years. Today was one of the really good days.” – Krzyzewski on celebrating the win over Michigan State.

Up Next: Duke will play No. 3 Texas Tech on Thursday at 9:30 pm EST in San Francisco.

North Carolina

North Carolina guard RJ Davis (4) and forward Armando Bacot (5) celebrate in the second half of a second-round game against Baylor in the NCAA college basketball tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, Saturday, March, 19, 2022.

First Win: The Tar Heels topped No. 9 Marquette on Thursday, 95-63 for Hubert Davis’ first NCAA Tournament win as a head coach. North Carolina shared the ball and dished out a season-best 29 assists on 34 made-baskets in the victory. Brady Manek led the Tar Heels with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Caleb Love added 23 points. Marquette had three technical fouls.

Second Win: RJ Davis scored a career-high 30 points as North Carolina upset No. 1 seed Baylor – last year’s national champions – 93-86 in overtime. It was the ninth time North Carolina defeated a No. 1 seed in the tournament. Davis also had five rebounds and six assists, while Brady Manek scored 26 points and Armando Bacot tallied 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Fun Fact: North Carolina made 13 three-pointers against Marquette, the most it ever made in an NCAA Tournament game. The Tar Heels’ previous high was 12 in 2005 vs. Oakland. Love’s six three-pointers against Marquette tied a UNC single-game NCAA Tournament record.

They Said It: “I didn’t want to go home. I mean, there was no time to be tired. When we were going to go to overtime, I knew what was at stake. And we all wanted to win.” – RJ Davis after beating Baylor.

Up Next: The Tar Heels will face No. 4 UCLA on Friday at 9:40 pm EST om Philadelphia.

LEMOORE — College of the Sequoias learned the hard way why City College of San Francisco has the state’s top-ranked men’s basketball team.

The Rams raced out to a 16-point advantage early, withstood rally after rally, and responded when the Giants briefly took the lead late to pull out a 71-65 victory March 12 in the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association championship tournament.

Northern California No. 1-seeded San Francisco (31-1) will seek the fifth state title in program history when it faces NorCal No. 2 West Valley (28-3) in the fourth ever all-Northern California final, scheduled for 3:30 pm March 13 at West Hills-Lemoore College’s Golden Eagle Arena. The Rams have now won 27 straight games since a 73-70 loss to West Valley on Nov.19.

“Obviously, San Francisco is a powerhouse. I thought we dug ourselves a little bit of a hole early, but I’m really proud of the way the boys competed over the course of the last 30 minutes of the game,” Sequoias coach Dallas Jensen said.

“Some shots didn’t go our way and some execution down the stretch wasn’t fantastic. But we put ourselves in a wonderful position to have a chance to win that game and play for a state championship. But unfortunately, things didn’t go our way tonight. Kudos to (San Francisco) coach (Justin) Labagh’s staff and his players. There’s a reason they are who they are, and they earned it tonight.”

San Francisco scored the game’s first six points and took its biggest lead at 23-7 on a layup by Julian Vaughns with 10:06 remaining in the first half.

Sequoias (27-5) sliced the deficit to three points (32-29) on a 3-pointer by Ryan Johnson (Hanford) with 1:56 left before halftime. But the Rams scored the final seven points of the first half, capped by Seyi Reiley’s layup, to extend the lead back to 10 points (39-29).

The Giants twice got within three points early in the second half only to have San Francisco stretch the lead back to at least eight points each time.

Sequoias finally took its first and only lead of the game at 63-62 with 3:34 left on a layup by Terri Miller (Clovis North High).

“Our whole identity this year has been built around being physical and being tough and competing at a high level,” Jensen said. “And I thought their ability to come back against the No. 1 team in the state and to put ourselves in position to win that game just speaks volumes of who they are, their belief, their competitive spirit and how they are there for one another . They really do work as a collective unit and I’m just very, very proud of them and love them dearly.”

The Rams regained the lead for good at 66-63 after two free throws apiece from Naseem Gaskin and Reiley.

A jumper by Conner Jackson (Dublin) cut the gap to 66-65 with 1;41 remaining, and a steal by Johnson on the ensuing San Francisco possession gave the Giants a chance to go back in front, but they committed a turnover and the Rams’ Gaskin raced down for a dunk on the other end to make it a three-point lead (68-65).

Sequoias missed his final three shots over the last 34 seconds, while San Francisco made 3 of 4 free throw attempts down the stretch to snap the Giants’ 14-game winning streak.

“They came out and exceeded us as far as energy and effort. I thought they took us out of our offense early,” Jensen said. “They did a fantastic job of applying ball pressure. We probably got a little too keen to shoot some outside jumpers. We didn’t have a lot of paint touches. We weren’t really getting a lot of ball reverses. No pace and tempo. But I thought over the last 30 minutes that we did the things that we were supposed to. So as bad as those first 10 minutes were, the reality is we still had an opportunity to win that game down the stretch.”

Seth Dawson (Antioch) led Sequoias with 24 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Jackson delivered 17 points, two rebounds and a steal.

Johnson contributed eight points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks; while Miller had nine points, one rebound, one assist, one steal and one block.

The Giants also received two points, three rebounds and an assist from Scott Ator (Murphy, Texas); three points and three rebounds from Andre Treadwell (Sacramento); two points from Ryan Troutman (Kerman); a rebound and a steal from Mohammed Adam (Monterey) and a rebound from Bryce Fitzgerald (Las Vegas).

Sequoias, which made its third consecutive Elite Eight appearance in a championship season, was seeking its first state title since 1982. The Giants also captured a state crown in 1953.

Jensen and assistants Tommy Lou, Tye McCord and Tie Sims now turn their attention toward moving their seven sophomores — Dawson, Jackson, Johnson, Adam, Fitzgerald, Ator and Tiveon Stroud (Selma) — on to the four-year level. Stroud has already committed to Bellevue University, at NAIA college in Nebraska.

“At the end of the day, I’m as competitive as anyone. I want to win as much as anyone,” Jensen said. “But the reason I coach and the reason my wife and I enjoy this level so much is you have a chance to impact young men’s lives, and help them become the best versions of themselves on and off the floor.

“And the reality is I would rather see my guys graduate and sign a four-year scholarship than even win a state title. Would I like to do both? Absolutely. But at the end of the day, life is about progression, and we ‘re trying to help these young men be able to move forward in life, be able to get their education paid for, and hopefully one day be able to provide for a family of their own.”
