Aug. 4—Climate change and growing demand for water in the West have combined to deplete the Colorado River to a historic low, and now a more mundane glitch is compounding the supply problem: faulty plumbing.

Antiquated pipes will impede efforts to channel water through the Glen Canyon Dam and to the three lower basin states of Nevada, Colorado and California as reservoir levels drop to critical lows — possibly putting New Mexico and its upper basin partners in a legal bind, according to a coalition of nonprofit groups.

Lake Powell is on the verge of falling below the minimum water level — 3,490 feet — needed to power turbines that generate electricity for 5 million homes, and when that happens it must funnel water through a different set of aging pipes that are unable to meet the task, the coalition’s representatives told reporters Wednesday at an online news conference.

That plumbing system must be overhauled to funnel enough water to the river and then downstream to meet the supply obligations for the lower basin states and Mexico under the 1922 Colorado River Compact, they said.

“This problem should have been addressed five years ago,” said Zach Frankel, the executive director of the Utah Rivers Council. “It’s time we come clean with the American people about the antique plumbing problems inside Glen Canyon Dam.”

Lake Powell’s falling levels are exposing the infrastructure flaws as the US Bureau of Reclamation is calling for the seven Western states, including New Mexico, to draft plans by mid-August to cut their use of water in the Colorado River Basin by a combined 2 million to 4 million acre feet.

An acre-foot is about 326,000 gallons, enough water to supply two or three US households for a year.

Frankel said the cuts the Reclamation Bureau is requesting represent about a third of the river’s flow.

The Colorado River is flowing at a historic low amid a 22-year megadrought. Climate change is compounding the problem with hotter, third weather that reduces snowpack runoff and increases evaporation.

Story continues

The main options for upgrading the dam’s plumbing are to retrofit existing pipes or add ones that bypass the hydro-generators, Frankel said, displaying diagrams of the proposed work.

At the same time, the Reclamation Bureau has made optimistic projections about water flows that aren’t in line with the reality of Lake Powell dipping critically low, said Nick Halberg, the council’s policy analyst.

“We can’t just say everything is rosy moving forward and Lake Powell is never going to fall down to these low levels,” Halberg said.

Rolf Schmidt Petersen, the Interstate Stream Commission’s director, said the four upper basin states — New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming — will do what they can to conserve water, but it likely will be limited.

They’re already receiving and using considerably less than their maximum federal water allotments, Schmidt Petersen said.

In New Mexico, water is diverted from the Colorado River Basin through a complex series of tunnels and dams known as the San Juan-Chama Project. This water merges with the Rio Grande and supplements supply for Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Native pueblos and irrigators in the middle valley.

The Reclamation Bureau this year issued less than half of the full San Juan-Chama allocation, Schmidt Petersen said. That’s in contrast to the lower basin states that receive their maximum allotments, he said.

Frankel said fixing the dam’s plumbing issues will ensure all the states aren’t shorted any more than they already are. It also will prevent possible legal tussles between the upper and lower basin states over water deliveries, he said.

Dave DuBois, New Mexico’s state climatologist, said aside from the warming climate straining the river, there’s an increasing number of users, which together will create continuing challenges even with infrastructure improvements.

“There are so many straws that are in that river,” DuBois said.

DENVER — San Francisco Giants infielder Tommy La Stella was reinstated Monday from the 10-day injured list and made his season debut at Colorado.

In other moves, the Giants transferred right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (right ankle inflammation) to the 60-day injured list and optioned outfielder Luis González to Triple-A Sacramento. Right-hander Yunior Marte was optioned to Sacramento on Sunday, and the Giants selected the contract of right-hander Mauricio Llovera.

La Stella, in the second year of an $18.75 million, three-year contract, missed time in his first year with the club due to a broken right hand and a hamstring strain. He underwent surgery in October to repair an Achilles’ tendon issue, and the recovery time forced him to miss the first five weeks of the season.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler welcomed La Stella’s return, saying his veteran presence bolsters clubhouse stability and resolve. La Stella’s defensive versatility also gives Kapler additional flexibility in managing the lineup, and his bat adds to the team’s overall fire power.

“Tommy is one of the better plate appearances in baseball right now, simple as that,” Kapler said. “He has great discipline, fouls off pitches, is extremely competitive in the batter’s box. He’s kind of the epitome of what we want our hitters to be, make a lot of contact, drive the baseball, occasionally draw a walk here and there and keep the line moving.”

Kapler also said that DeSclafani had not encountered a setback in his rehab of an ankle injury that has sidelined him since April 22. He said DeSclafani and team doctors and trainers have settled on a rehab program to gradually build back his arm and leg strength so that he’s ready to fill a slot in the rotation when he returns.

“A long, slow ramp for a pitcher is the most protective thing we can do for them,” Kapler said, adding that “getting him back to the big leagues healthy and strong and capable of taking down a full workload is the most important piece of this puzzle.”

This story has been updated to reflect that Gary Oldman’s documentary “Flying Horse” has not yet been released.

In 2013, veteran documentary filmmaker Marc Shaffer was working on a film in San Francisco when he became captivated by the work of English photographer Eadweard Muybridge. The film, “American Jerusalem: Jews and the Making of San Francisco” that aired on PBS in 2014, used some of Muybridge’s photography.

It was then when Shaffer conceptualized the idea of creating a film about Muybridge, who is considered to be the father of stop-motion photography.

“[Exposing Muybridge] tells the fantastical story of the pioneering 19th century motion photographer whose breakthrough photography influenced today’s cinema,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer will screen his 2021 film “Exposing Muybridge” at the Boulder International Film Festival this weekend. In Shaffer’s first visit to BIFF, he will be present for three screenings — two in Boulder and one in Longmont.

The film was brought to the attention of Robin Beeck, BIFF’s executive director, after festival staff member Sherri Fike saw “Exposing Muybridge” at a New York festival.

“’Exposing Muybridge’ is one of those films that engrosses you so much in the story that you forget you’re sitting in a movie theater,” Beeck said. “And when you leave the theater, you have to reorient yourself to place and time a little bit. That’s the sign of a great film and is why we selected it to bring to our audiences.”

Muybridge is famously known for capturing motion by taking photos of a running horse in each stage of its gallop, a photo sequence that helped set the tone of modern-day cinema. This sequence has been said to be the first time a photographer captured movement faster than the human eye can see.

“Aspects of his work, once understood, made you feel different about how you can trust the person behind the machine,” Shaffer said.

Among historians and professionals, the film also features Academy Award-winning actor Gary Oldman, a collector of Muybridge’s work.

“It’s like splitting the atom, it’s like discovering penicillin — it’s a monumental achievement,” Oldman says in the film, when talking about Muybridge’s discoveries.

Oldman has written a screenplay about Muybridge, “Flying Horse,” with the plan of directing and starring in the movie. Shaffer said the film is yet to be released due to funding shortfalls.

“I wanted Gary Oldman in the film,” Shaffer said, “not because I wanted a celebrity plant, but because, as an artist and a public figure, Gary relates to Muybridge on a deeply personal level, in a way others do not. ”

Shaffer began production of the film in 2019, after receiving funding, including a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

“The hardest part in making a film is the funding,” Shaffer said. “Getting approved for funding and trying to figure how much you’ll actually end up needing is the most difficult part.”

After nine years of work and two years of filming through a pandemic, “Exposing Muybridge”’ will now hit BIFF’s big screens. It will be screened in Boulder at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th St., at 3 pm Saturday and at eTown Hall, 1535 Spruce St., at 7:30 pm Sunday. It will be screened at Longmont Museum’s Stewart Auditorium, 400 Quail Road, at 5:15 pm Saturday.

“[Boulder International Film Festival staff] have been terrific and I’m really looking forward to being there and sharing our film,” Shaffer said.

SAN JOSE (KPIX) – A Los Angeles mother claims she was stopped and interrogated for human trafficking after boarding a Southwest Airlines flight with her biracial daughter, and is now demanding that the airline be held accountable for what she calls racial profiling and harassment.

“We wouldn’t have been charged for anything if my daughter were white and blonde,” said Mary MacCarthy.

The Los Angeles-based single mother said she booked a flight on Southwest Airlines with her 10-year-old daughter Moira after learning that her brother had suddenly passed away last month. She was en route to Denver, Colorado on October 22nd with a stop in San Jose.

MacCarthy said as soon as they landed in Denver they were surrounded by two police officers and a Southwest Airlines agent.

“They tried to speak to my daughter individually. I said, ‘No, she’s only 10, you don’t interrogate her alone,'” MacCarthy said. “I got out my cell phone and started recording.”

In the video, she explains that she uses her phone to record their names because she is too nervous to write them down. Her daughter’s sobbing, who cannot be seen in the video, can be heard in the background.

“The flight attendants were only concerned about the behavior when you got on the plane,” the Southwest Airlines crew member told MacCarthy.

MacCarthy told KPIX that they were part of the last group to board because they booked their tickets at the last minute. Southwest Airlines does not have assigned seats. She said she asked flight attendants if they could help her get two seats together so she could be next to her daughter.

But when they told her they couldn’t help, MacCarthy said she asked passengers if they wouldn’t mind pulling for her and Moira. She said several passengers were understanding and moved their seats.

MacCarthy said the flight was uneventful until she and her daughter got off the plane and reached the jet bridge, where officers and crew were waiting for them.

After MacCarthy stated that Moira was their daughter and that they were in Colorado for her brother’s funeral, MacCarthy said the group let her go without further asking.

“I was absolutely sure that we were racially profiled, but I have other worries, I only thought about that a lot 10 days later,” she said.

A few days ago, MacCarthy said she received a call from the human trafficking division of the Denver Police Department.

“She told me that she called on suspicion that I was a trafficker,” she said. “You saw a white mother, you saw a child with a different skin tone and said that it was suspicious, that it could be a crime and that we are going to report it. That is not OK. That’s the United States of America in 2021. “

In addition, MacCarthy said she asked what was on the police report that KPIX had received. According to the report, flight attendants said MacCarthy and her daughter did not speak to each other during the flight and the mother did not allow Moira to speak to the flight crew. Both of these claims, MacCarthy said, were totally wrong.

Police also wrote in the report that MacCarthy told them about their brother’s funeral, that Moira was their daughter and looked tall for her age.

Police reported that the girl started to speak but then stopped and that MacCarthy “did not want to give any information”.

MacCarthy said her cell phone video was telling the truth, however. The recording can be heard telling officials and the airline employee that she works in technology and lives in Los Angeles.

“I’m glad I did because it turned out that the truth that was recorded in my video is different from its official report,” said MacCarthy. “I want you to be held accountable for a straightforward, outrageous case of racist profiling and harassment by myself and a grieving 10-year-old African American girl.”

KPIX has contacted the Denver Police Department and is still waiting for a response.

Southwest Airlines issued a statement to KPIX stating:

“We were discouraged to hear about this mother’s report when she was traveling with her daughter. We are conducting an internal review of the situation and will reach out to the customer to resolve their concerns and apologize for her experience traveling with us. Our employees go through solid training on human trafficking. Most of all, Southwest Airlines prides itself on providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for the millions of customers who travel with us each year. “

A large amount of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, known as the “atmospheric river,” flows into southwest Colorado.

“Basically, it’s this heavy cloud of moisture that comes in from the Pacific,” said Erin Walter, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. “It’s like this continuous stream, almost like a jet, but in the form of moisture.”

Over the weekend, the atmospheric river dumped over 5 inches of rain in the San Francisco area, Walter said.

Most of the moisture from the storm system in California is drained over the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin, with southwest Colorado receiving the last bit of rainfall on Tuesday.

“We’re not going to see snowflakes like we did in the Sierra Nevada, but we’re going to see some precipitation,” said Walter.

Southwest Colorado has warm conditions that will be a big factor in how much rainfall the area falls, Walter said.

“We see higher amounts of snow on Tuesday morning, and then, when the system goes through, a little colder air will come in behind it,” said Walter.

Cities along US Highway 160 should expect about a quarter of an inch of rain on Tuesday, with some areas potentially seeing higher, localized rainfall of about half an inch.

“For Durango, Cortez, and Pagosa Springs, I would expect at least a quarter of an inch,” said Walter.

As for snow, Silverton is expected to get about an inch of powder in town, with about 5 to 20 inches in the higher elevations of the San Juan Mountains.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its winter outlook for temperature, precipitation and drought on Thursday. This is the second year in a row La Niña, according to NOAA. The seasons of La Niña are caused by above-average sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific.

“The southwest is sure to remain a region of concern as we anticipate below-average rainfall with the drought continuing in most areas,” said Jon Gottschalck of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

In southwest Colorado, temperatures are expected to be 40 to 50% higher than normal, rainfall 33 to 40% lower than normal, and drought conditions expected to worsen.

“Any moisture is definitely welcome,” said Walter.

Steady wins the race.

Will Zalatoris, the 23-year-old native of San Francisco, put in an expert performance at the TPC Colorado Championship in Heron Lakes last weekend. Zalatoris shot 67-67-70-69 during the four-day event to finish under at 15 and take his first career win.

Photo courtesy of PGA Media – Will Zalatoris lifts the 2020 TPC Colorado Championship trophy on Saturday afternoon.

“Finally,” said a visibly pleased Zalatoris in front of the assembled media after he had earned the victory. “It’s probably been four years since I won a golf tournament. It still hasn’t arrived. “

It wasn’t quite four years, but it was close. Zalatoris’ last win in any type of tournament came in 2017 when he took first place as a senior at Wake Forest at Duke University’s Rod Myers Invitational. When he started this week, Zalatoris had come this close as he tied sixth, third and fourth in his last three tournaments.

“Just hold on to the finish and trust it and get the job done day in and day out and it’s nice to see it finally pay off … it’s pretty nice,” Zalatoris said. “I think, to be honest, just a little consolation in the finals. I followed the last two tournaments from behind. “

Zalatoris’s performance was barely enough on Saturday’s final lap to hold off Chase Johnson, who set a course record of 63 to runner-up.

Johnson excelled in the final round on Saturday, carding 10 birdies over 18 holes, shooting 31-32 to get a 14-under and going into the clubhouse with part of the lead.

“It was fun, I came out today just thinking, ‘It’s kind of all or nothing for my position here,’ and I knew I could do it if I had a hot start to what I really call the top nine I could give myself a chance with the second nine, ”said Johnson on Saturday afternoon. “I just tried to be as patient as possible because you can’t force anything here.”

The $ 54,000 prize for second place secures Johnson, who entered the week on conditional status, his Korn Ferry Tour card for the remainder of the season. “We’re all trying to do that, to put ourselves in the competition, but actually to go to the last round and place a 63 to give us a chance, that’s a huge confidence boost.”

As great as Johnson was, Zalatoris was unfazed and kept playing his game. A birdie on the characteristic par-3 hole 16 brought him one shot ahead of Johnson.

Two par fours remained. A textbook four against 17 gave Zalatoris the leeway to only have to reach par 18 to avoid a playoff with Johnson. Zalatoris missed the fairway from the tee and found himself 212 yards out in the rough. He explained after the round that the goal was only to get to 40 feet, knowing that the one spot he couldn’t miss was on the right, where there was a deep bunker.

After hitting the approach shot, Zalatoris stated, “I told my caddy, ‘this is gone’ very stressful for a hassle-free exit.”

His birdie putt slipped past the top of the cup by a hair. A straight tripod remained and Zalatoris’s putt hit the cup dead center to claim victory.

The win and associated check for $ 108,000 for first place was enough to propel Zalatoris to the top of the Korn Ferry Tour money list for the season. In normal times, winning the TPC Colorado along with his three other top 5 finishes in Zalatori’s season would almost certainly secure a top 25 spot that would earn him his PGA Tour card for the 2021 season. But these are far from common times as a result of the devastation caused by COVID-19 and the Korn Ferry Tour which have chosen to forego table-based promotions this season.

Even so, given that win and strong and steady play on the Korn Ferry Tour this year, Zalatoris’ lifelong goal of playing the PGA Tour is much closer. The cherry on top? This fall, Zalatoris secured a place for the US Open in the traditional Winged Foot.

in the case of the Colorado Rockies, if they were at the Olympics, they would have had a shorter night.

Olympic baseball, which began Wednesday, has some notable differences from major league baseball

The big guy is the rule of escape that would have saved the Rockies a few innings. The game ends if the team loses at least 10 runs after 7 innings. It shortened the 12-2 win over Philadelphia in Colorado on April 25 and the 12-0 win over San Francisco the next day, May 13, defeating Cincinnati 13-8.

The Olympic Course Rules were introduced by the World Baseball Softball Confederation in all games except the round medal game. A final out also occurred if the team advanced 15 runs after 5 innings.

Olympic baseball is a return to the preanalytical era. Since MLB Statcast is not installed, there are no problems with the spin rate, the exit speed or the starting angle.

“Basically we had nothing,” said American third baseman Todd Frazier after the Americas qualifier. “There was no video. There was no analysis process. This is your bat. Bring your own. “

Here are 10 nuggets to compare and contrast with.

10. The balls are different. The ball is not a Major League Rawlings breed, but a WBSC version with slightly different stitching. On the other hand, the WBSC ran out of baseball at the Americas qualifier in Florida and the organizers switched to minor league balls in the middle of the tournament.

9. Faster in kilometers. The only metric is really a metric: field speeds are listed in Yokohama. Both miles / hour and kilometers / hour stadium scoreboards. To those wondering, the average speed of 99.2 mph led by Jacob DeGrom’s Major League Baseball sounds like it doesn’t get any further at 159.6 km / h.

8. Who is here and who is not. Of course, DeGrom didn’t take part in the Olympics. The Olympics are limited to 40 players who are not on the Major League Baseball roster. Nevertheless, technically qualified players are often blocked by clubs. St. Louis three-time left-handed Matthew Liberatore was scheduled for qualifying for the United States, but the Cardinals refused to send him to Japan. The list has a vintage feel to it. The US team includes Edwin Jackson and David Robertson. The Dominican strike order in the opening round on Wednesday included Jose Bautista, Juan Francisco and Emilio Bonifacio. However, Japan canceled the tournament’s Central League and Pacific League seasons and welcomed Masahiro Tanaka as a pitching staff member. Oh: And the roster is 24 instead of 26.

7. More exiting runners. Even more extreme is the basic rule of placing a runner on second base at the start of each subsequent innings. Runners are placed first and second. MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association hired second base runners in an extra inning last year to get people out of the ballpark faster, but Rob Manfred will be dropped after this season. He said it was likely.

6. Check tick. Similar to Triple-A and Double-A in 2018, a 20-second pitch clock is used as the basis without a runner.

5. Look at the touch. There are also high five restrictions. There is no celebration from the coach while the base is being rolled. “When a batter hits a home run, members of his team are not allowed to touch the batter until he passes home plate,” they say.

4. Access and information. Probably a pitcher? Perhaps. What do you think of the coach before the game? According to WBSC spokesman Richard Baker, he won’t be able to hit the media on game day until the end of the game. Thoughts of game stars? The clubhouse is closed and players have to walk past the media on their way out of the stadium, but not the reporters.

3. Keep things moving. Manager and Coach Hill Trip? There are 3 additional trips in any game without a switch and every 3 additional innings instead of 1 per inning per pitcher with no pitching changes. Managers and trainers with batteries and base runners also have a limit of three stops.

DENVER (CBS4) – The MLB All-Star game will take place at Coors Field this summer, the Colorado Rockies confirmed on Tuesday. The game will take place on Tuesday, July 13th – and it is expected to be at full capacity.

The game was originally intended to be played in Atlanta, but last week Major League Baseball announced it would be moving the game out of Georgia after the state changed its electoral laws.

“Major League Baseball is grateful to the Rockies, the city of Denver, and the state of Colorado for supporting this summer’s All-Star Game. We value their flexibility and enthusiasm to deliver a first class event for our game and the region. We look forward to celebrating the best players in our sport and entertaining fans around the world, ”said Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. in a statement.

– Governor Jared Polis (@GovofCO) April 6, 2021

MLB officials said they chose the Rockies because they were already in the process of applying for a future All-Star game.

“The Rockies had come up with a detailed hotel, event space, and security plan that took months to assemble, and the MLB staff had already made several on-site visits to Denver. In addition, Governor Jared Polis and Mayor Michael Hancock have pledged to provide the facilities and services necessary to support this year’s celebrations, ”officials said.

Governor Jared Polis said it was great news for baseball fans – and Colorado’s economy.

“Get ready for a truly epic home run derby one mile above sea level. It’s going to be a lot of fun, ”said Governor Polis.

According to Polis, officials appreciate the all-star game. The All-Star Game Celebration will result in sales of approximately $ 190 million in Colorado this year.

“This is incredibly good news for our small businesses, restaurants or hotels and our employees who have suffered from this pandemic,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock on Tuesday.

Both Hancock and Polis expect Coors Field to be at full capacity.

“The state is moving away from our voting system on April 16 as a mandatory policy. I think everyone expects a full, sold-out stadium in July,” said Polis.
