SAN FRANCISCO (BCN / CBS SF) – San Francisco city officials announced $ 54.7 million in government funding to convert a residential hotel in the South of the Market neighborhood into permanent housing for people emerging from homelessness get out.

Funding comes from the California Department of Housing and Community Development through the government’s Homekey project.

CONTINUE READING: VIDEO: Elderly woman knocked down in attack in Oakland Chinatown

The plan to convert the newly acquired building at 1321 Mission St. into permanent housing is part of a larger plan by Mayor London Breed to overhaul and expand the city’s permanent housing sites. Supportive living combines coordinated services with affordable housing for people with mental or physical health problems.

“As we move forward with our homelessness restoration plan, we must use all the opportunities and resources we have to ensure that all people get the housing and support they need,” Breed said in a statement. “I would like to thank Governor Newsom for pushing Project Homekey forward and for guidelines to support our homeless residents during one of the most difficult times in our state’s history.”

CONTINUE READING: Napa County’s COVID Case Rate Hits New High

The new financing comes after the city received US $ 76.9 million last year through the Homekey project for the purchase and operation of two other newly converted permanent residential complexes, the Hotel Diva and the Granada Hotel. More than 360 new units will be created at the sites overseen by the San Francisco Department of Homeless and Supportive Housing, city officials said.

In addition, the city plans to acquire and convert three more permanent housing support properties, with the potential to add 237 additional units.

“The mayor and governor believe housing is the solution to homelessness,” said Shireen McSpadden, executive director of the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing. “It is vitally important that we provide more housing, shelter, prevention and distraction for those who are homeless in our community.”

LARKSPUR (BCN / CBS SF) – A former qualified care facility in Larkspur is being viewed as a potential new project home key location for housing the currently homeless.

City officials are working with Marin County and Episcopal Community Services on a grant application under the state’s Project Homekey program to convert the 1251 S. Eliseo Drive facility into 43 “permanent supportive housing” units for single adults in the county are homeless. According to a joint statement released on Tuesday.

CONTINUE READING: Russian River Rubber Dam emptied due to impending storm

“This development is a win-win situation. It is revitalizing an unused property and providing much-needed housing for some of Marin’s most vulnerable people, ”said Kevin Haroff, Larkspur Mayor.

In addition to housing, the location would offer a range of services including case management, mental health, educational and career programs.

Episcopal Community Services is currently negotiating the purchase of the building, which is located on an idyllic stretch of Corte Madera Creek and will also serve as operator of the facility.

Officials plan to submit the grant application in early October.

CONTINUE READING: Police investigation into broken vehicle windows will block Highway 17 on Saturday

The project is undergoing an “exhaustive review process” during which organizers will seek public opinion, according to Tuesday’s announcement.

Should the state funding come through, the Episcopal Community Services, the city and the district plan to form an advisory group in which representatives of all three organizations as well as actors from the neighborhood and people “who have lived homelessness” are represented.

While cost estimates are still in the early stages and could change, the total price is estimated at around $ 20.5 million, with the county bringing in about $ 8 million and the remainder coming from the state, according to ECS spokesman Alex Tourk.

If all goes well, the new enclosures could be operational by the end of 2022, Tourk said.

Start of construction for Herzog & de Meurons Conversion of a former power station building in San Fransico into a mixed-use project. The adaptive reuse of the iconic Station A was designed in collaboration with the California office Adamson Associates and is part of the Portrero Power Station project, the redevelopment of 29 hectares of industrial site in an extension of the Dogpatch district. The design by Herzog & de Meuron retains and re-utilizes various features of the industrial building while adding a lightweight steel frame construction, breathing new life into one of San Francisco’s landmarks.

Originally intended for demolition, Station A, one of the historic buildings in the Dogpatch district, is now being repurposed as the local community campaigned for its preservation. Building on its experience with adaptive conversion projects such as the London Tate Modern, the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie or the Madrid Caixaforum, the Swiss company Herzog & de Meuron proposes a careful reassessment of the qualities of the industrial site and assigns new uses to the architectural features of the former power station.

The reinvention of the Power Station will breathe new life into an important building from the city’s eventful past and anchor this area as a travel destination on the San Francisco waterfront ”- Jason Frantzen, Senior Partner at Herzog & de Meuron.

During the renovation of station A, a large part of the turbine hall, whose foundations support the raised floors, will be retained. The various platforms, which once housed the machines for generating electricity, become meeting areas with a view of the atrium-like space of the turbine hall. The facade of the upper structure is overhanging, the project integrates natural ventilation strategies and thus sets a sustainable transformation of the industrial building. The ground floor of the station will contain a lobby, conference center and multifunctional rooms, while the upper floors will be reserved for offices.

The power plant plan is San Francisco’s largest development project to date and will include residential, retail, office and outdoor spaces, creating a new mixed-income neighborhood on the city’s waterfront.
