OAKLAND (CBS SF) – Prosecutors said a lawsuit was being settled over the cost of bringing recycling bins to the curb of apartment buildings in Oakland.

Oakland City Council members agreed to a settlement Tuesday afternoon following a lawsuit against California Waste Solutions. City attorneys have secured approximately $ 6 million that will be returned to Oaklanders.

“Unjust and unfair dealings are unacceptable and will not exist!” City Prosecutor Barbara Parker announced on Wednesday.

Nearly five years ago, Oakland filed a lawsuit against California Waste Solutions over the company’s recycling deal with the city.

The push / pull fee set by the company was far higher than the fee for the same service for single-family homes. Oakland attempted to negotiate the fee with the company before filing a lawsuit, city lawyers said.

During a legal battle, city officials learned that the company had overcharged its customers about $ 6 million in total.

Oakland customers who have overcharged will be notified that they are eligible for a refund and how to get the refund in the coming months.

It is unclear when the supply chain will normalize again. And the economy pays the price.

Any company’s supply chain can begin with suppliers of raw materials and other inputs. As soon as a product is manufactured, it travels over the network from the factory via a warehouse to a store and finally to the end customer. Various agents, brokers, sellers, transportation companies, and distribution centers can play a key role in ensuring that a product is manufactured and reaches its final destination.

The supply chain is not working as it should, thanks to a host of issues exacerbated by the global COVID pandemic. In the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, cargo ships with around half a million sea containers full of goods from various countries in Asia are waiting to be unloaded. After unloading, a lack of truck drivers prevents these containers from leaving the ports on time. Rail terminals, to which trucks deliver goods for the next stage of the journey, are supplemented with containers for onward transport, which in turn also block arriving trains. Should these goods somehow make it to a warehouse, the labor shortage will limit their timely processing.

And these are just some of the problems.

A global microchip shortage exacerbated by winter storms in Texas that affected domestic production is slowing the production of automobiles and various electronic devices. BENICIA – Benicia Plumbing is not only intended for the city of Benicia, it meets all the sanitary needs of the Solano County.

The business was opened in 1975 by a married couple, Bill Cawley II and Leeann Cawley. Today, her children and a few grandchildren keep the 46-year-old’s business going.

“It was really great going to work with my dad as a kid,” said Bill Cawley III. “I have to see my father every day.”

Cawley worked for his father in many roles as a teenager, including digging holes. He later attended Texas A&M, graduated with a degree in construction management, and then returned to California to use his skills in the family business.

The elderly Cawley and his wife are now retired, but Leeann still does the bookkeeping.

The company was opened in Benicia with headquarters and warehouse. You now have a service and repair office in Vacaville, which opened last April.

“We have a warehouse in Morgan Hill that supports our new build in South Bay,” said the younger Cawley.

They will continue to expand their service and repair offerings across Solano County and expand into the Sacramento area, but are still looking for space.

The pandemic has not affected their workload, it has increased it.

“Fortunately, as we are an important business, we haven’t closed so the business has been very busy. Our technicians wear all protective gear to protect themselves and others, ”said Cawley.

It currently employs 160 people, including 15 service technicians, 100 new-build plumbers and 45 auxiliary workers.

Over the years they’ve grown as a company because they’re essential: from the Y2K threat to the 2008 recession, labor shortage, non-union competition and navigating Covid, they have always been there for their customers.

“There have been huge changes that have definitely made things better – mostly technology, communication, new materials. All of our technicians and foremen have iPads for all of their papers, sales, season tickets, orders, and offers to customers, ”said Cawley. “Regulatory changes have significantly increased the construction costs.”

The family motto has always been “People take care of people” and it will stay that way in the future.

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Not everyone knows Admor HVAC Inc.

But you certainly know the daughter of the owner and her catchphrase “I love my Fujitsu”.

“It’s interesting because I have a job in retail, but I wear a mask all the time and people only recognize me by my eyes,” said Keli Santos. “People say, ‘Do I know you from anywhere?'”

This “somewhere” has naturally appeared in commercials for and with her father Drew Santos since she was three. There was no turning back.

“And that one picture got the whole ‘I love Fujitsu’ phenomenon in a nutshell,” said Drew Santos, President of Admor HVAC. “Nobody was doing TV commercials at the time, and I wanted to do things outside of the box and really shake up the industry. So we started producing our commercials. “

The popular TV commercials took Drew on an unusual journey that began after visiting a customer when he was a young man selling air conditioners in a small warehouse in Halawa. It turns out that this customer changed his life.

“He said, ‘What is your dream?’ And I told him I wanted the largest HVAC wholesale company in Hawaii. I want to be a superstore, ”said Drew. “So he took me to Sand Island in his car and opened a 30,000-foot warehouse and said, ‘Is this big enough for your dream?'”

It was then that Drew began writing his own story. He decided to start an advertising campaign with himself, the Fujitsu brand and his daughter Keli. Keli admitted that some of the ideas seemed pretty cheesy.

“What if you see dad posing with all the models? That’s a big eye roll, that’s a big eye roll, ”Keli said and laughed. “All my friends say, ‘Is that your father? ‘And then I say,’ Yeah, but it’s okay, I love him, he’s my father. ‘ I have to love him, no matter what. “

Although business is booming now, according to Santos, there are many challenges along the way. The greatest thing is to gain the trust of your customers as a recognized outsider.

“I think it comes down to working hard and always doing more than your competitors are doing. Work when they’re loose, I never get complacent, ”Drew said.

It’s a work ethic that his entire team shares, he says.

“I couldn’t build this business without an incredible team of people. Some of them with us 25, even every 28 years. They gave their heart and soul. I really appreciate that, and I really appreciate that, ”Drew said.

In light of arid weather conditions across California, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission on Thursday urged irrigation customers and city departments to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10 percent.

According to the agency, the SFPUC’s water reservoirs are currently 76.8 percent of their maximum storage capacity – slightly lower than the historical average of 81 percent at this time of year.

SFPUC’s water comes from a variety of sources, including Hetch Hetchy Reservoir near Yosemite and five other reservoirs in the Bay Area. It serves around 2.7 million customers across the Bay Area.

“This is the second dry year in a row for the state of California and we must do all we can to get the most out of our water supplies if this trend continues,” Mayor London Breed said in a statement. “San Francisco is a leader in water conservation thanks to our innovative water policy and strong management, but we need to look ahead. The steps we are now taking to use our water wisely will help us become more resilient and weather future dry years. “

According to SFPUC, Franciscans use an average of 42 gallons of water every day, one of the lowest rates in California.

Even so, the SFPUC’s request to its 1,600 irrigation customers, who rely on SFPUC to irrigate their landscapes to reduce their consumption by 10 percent, is to ensure that water in the agency’s reservoirs and aquifers will last during the prolonged dry spell.
