RIO DELL, Calif. — At least two people were dead, nearly a dozen were injured and scores were displaced on Tuesday as the North Coast of California — a rugged and remote stretch of redwood country overlooking the Pacific Ocean — worked to recover from a 6.4-magnitude earthquake.

The powerful jolt, in the frigid dark at 2:34 am Pacific time, damaged bridges and roads, topped walls and chimneys, and cut power to more than 70,000 utility customers in Humboldt County. By evening, electricity was restored for about half of those customers, but some 34,000 were still without power, according to Pacific Gas and Electric, and some parts of the county were left without running water and major transportation routes.

The quake was centered just offshore, about 12 miles west of the community of Ferndale and more than 200 miles north of San Francisco, in a seismically active region. Exactly one year ago, the same area was rocked by a 6.2 temblor. More than 50 aftershocks followed Tuesday’s earthquake, including a large one about five minutes after with a magnitude of 4.6, according to the US Geological Survey.

William F. Honsal, the sheriff and emergency services director of Humboldt County, said that at least two people, ages 72 and 83, died because they had suffered medical crises around the time of the earthquake and could not be reached by emergency personnel soon enough .

Among the damaged roads is the one that crosses Fernbridge, a historic multiple-arched bridge across the Eel River that is the primary route for Ferndale residents to Eureka, the county’s largest city. The bridge was closed early Tuesday, and photos showed that a billowing crack had formed in the road nearby.

In Rio Dell, an old logging community about 10 miles southeast of Ferndale that the sheriff called “ground zero” for the earthquake’s impact, the city manager, Kyle Knopp, said that 15 homes were already deemed uninhabitable because of earthquake damage, and that inspectors were continuing to examine structures. Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, and Humboldt County officials declared a state of emergency to expedite aid.

Mr. Knopp, who estimated that as many as 150 of the community’s 3,300 residents would be displaced by the time inspections were completed, also said the city might be unable to supply tap water until Wednesday at the earliest.

“This was a tough day,” said Greg Allen, the Rio Dell police chief. “That jolt hit us pretty hard.”

Witnesses, many of whom had been through significant earthquakes before, said that Tuesday’s quake felt unusually strong, leading to terrifying moments as they were shaken from their sleep.

In Rio Dell, Kirstin Collins, 32, said she awoke to a violent rattling and thought immediately of her 8-year-old son, Liam, who slept on the opposite side of the house. Her husband, Johnnie Collins, 30, ran to retrieve Liam in the pitch darkness, and cut his feet on broken items on the floor, she said.

A dresser topped onto her bed, and a fallen mirror nearly barricaded her in the room, she said. The house’s water heater broke, and a broken pipe flooded the laundry room where the family’s dog slept.

“I honestly didn’t think I was going to get out of the house,” Ms. Collins said hours later, assessing the quake’s aftermath in the rain. Once there was daylight, she said, she found more damage both inside and outside the house, and wondered how she would feed her son, charge her phone or find shelter.

“We have nothing,” she said. “Everything is broken in our house completely, and we don’t know where to go and what to do.”

Another Rio Dell resident, Joe Filyau, 59, said that he had been through other earthquakes, but “never felt one that hard.”

The “earth was just slamming up and down,” he said.

A tile from the countertop in his newly renovated kitchen broke away from the wall, he said, and he had to turn the water off after a line burst, spraying water under his house.

“Everything in the house is just everywhere,” he said.

But Mr. Filyau had more pressing concerns: His 87-year-old mother, Beverly, is on oxygen, and he did not know how much longer their gasoline-powered generator would keep running to provide power for her oxygen machine. All of the nearby gas stations were closed, so he planned to drive to Ferndale, hoping that a gas station there would have electricity and be open for business.

In the city of Fortuna, five miles east of Ferndale, local merchants said the quake on Tuesday was stronger even than the one that struck last Dec. 20 in the same region. By dawn, many people were already busy sweeping up broken glass on the sidewalks.

Kathy Comerer, the proprietor of Fortuna Fabrics and Crafts, said the earthquake had shattered seven of her store windows, “a record.” Nearby, the aroma of alcohol wafted from a Beverage Plus store, where the floor was littered with smashed liquor bottles. The owner of a pharmacy, Robert Johnson, said his storefront was intact only because he had installed sturdier windows after an earlier earthquake.

About 15 minutes’ drive away, Daniel Zingale, a retired state political strategist who now lives on eight acres of redwood forest, said the quake had frightened his two donkeys, Niño and Pinto; had sent his cat, macaroni, into hiding; and had knocked a statue of the Virgin Mary from a crèche on the fireplace mantle. But otherwise, he said, his cabin came home through without serious damage.

“It’s very dark here at night and very quiet, and all of a sudden, the house was rocking and rolling,” Mr. Zingale said. “A big mirror fell off the wall and we didn’t even hear it, because the sound of the quake was so loud.”

Boutique shops in Ferndale, a small town of 1,350 residents, had merchandise scattered across their floors. The front windows of Valley Grocery were shattered, and signs declared “Cash Only” because the power was out, as patrons shopped for essentials in the dark. At Ring’s Pharmacy, a clerk, Susie Klatt, said the quake had left not only her workplace, but also her holiday covered home, strewn with debris and damage.

“I’m a big Christmas person, so I had three trees fall over,” she said. “Santa Clauses all over the place.”

The latest earthquake and the one last year occurred in a region where three of the earth’s large crustal plates come together. Known as the Mendocino Triple Junction, it is an area of ​​high seismic activity, averaging about 80 earthquakes a year of magnitude 3 or greater.

Along most of coastal California, the Pacific plate slides slowly to the northwest past the North American plate. This results in the San Andreas fault and other major faults that occasionally cause large earthquakes.

In the northernmost part of the coast, however, a third plate, the Gorda — part of a larger plate called the Juan de Fuca — comes into play. At this triple junction, the Gorda is sliding beneath the North American plate, a process called subduction, and at the same time sliding past the Pacific plate, creating a fault called the Mendocino Transform. The combination of these various stresses is what leads to the large number of earthquakes in the area.

It may be harmful to humans, too. An algal bloom of this size can cause skin irritation and respiratory problems, and the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board is advising people to avoid swimming, kayaking, or other activities on the water until the bloom subsides.

Mary Spicer of Alameda, who paddles on the bay with an outrigger canoe team, said some members of her team have been experiencing skin irritation after coming into contact with the water over the past few weeks. Spicer said she began to notice discoloration of the water about a month ago — and then it turned to a “denser, thicker, chocolaty brown.”

Paddling at the Oakland Estuary a couple weeks ago, she was heartbroken to see a juvenile harbor seal poking its head out of the discolored water. “Just to see these marine creatures… having to live in the red, brown, dense water, it’s really just disconcerting,” she said.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration describes red tides as a “harmful algal bloom,” or large colonies of algae plants growing out of control that are sometimes rust-colored. Not all algal blooms are harmful, and most are beneficial in the ocean.

However, a small percentage of algae can produce deadly blooms, and that’s what Rosenfield believes may be happening now.

SF Baykeeper is getting reports through its pollution hotline of dead fish in Foster City, Alameda, Keller Beach in Richmond, Sausalito and Fort Baker.

“Whatever number I offer you would likely be too low,” Rosenfield said.

Government officials KQED reached would not confirm any number yet. But on Monday, Eileen White, executive officer at the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, described the algae bloom as “highly unusual” and “much more extensive” than blooms the agency has tracked in the past.

“And this one’s resulting in fish kills, which is not good,” she said. “So we’re going to continue to study, try to find the cause of it and learn from this, so hopefully we can prevent them in the future.”

Damon Tighe, who describes himself on his LinkedIn profile as an educator and a naturalist who studies mycology, tweeted a photo of a pile of dead fish at Lake Merritt on Sunday.

“Massive fish die off going on right now in Lake Merritt,” Tighe tweeted. “May be related to the HUGE algal bloom that’s been happening on the east bay since the start of the month in front of Alameda where effluent flows.” Tighe included a link to iNaturalist, a nature app that allows users to share their observations with other scientists and naturalists.

The aquatic science center noted that fish-kill reports began emerging around August 22, though they noted that the bay’s size makes data gathering a “huge challenge.”

What has changed, Rosenfield said, is those reports finally coming in, as well as confirmation from field investigators this weekend.

The algal bloom that Rosenfield says is most likely causing the die-off, he continued, is caused by a mix of environmental conditions, perhaps worsened by climate change, and treated sewage put out by wastewater treatment plants across the Bay Area. The red tide species of algae, Heterosigma, may be killing fish in two ways: it can produce a toxin that is deadly to fish, but it can also result in low dissolved oxygen levels in the water, which can also be deadly.

“So we’re not sure of which mechanism is operating here. Maybe it’s both,” Rosenfield said. But the same bloom has caused massive fish kills in other parts of the world, as well.

The change that spurred the bloom locally, Rosenfield said, was likely a tipping point in warming waters. The solution, then, is for wastewater treatment plants to begin recycling wastewater in far higher volumes than it does now.

An April 2022 report by the environmental group the Pacific Institute described wastewater recycling as underutilized across California. The group estimates that an additional 1.8 million to 2.1 million acre-feet per year of municipal wastewater is available for reuse in California.

San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin, an avid swimmer with the South End Rowing Club, saw the red tide himself as he took a dip last week, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

“My wife said I can’t swim in there anymore,” said Peskin. “I told her about it. It was like swimming through rust.”

He’s started to see the problem on the shores, too. His constituents have already started sending him photos of dead fish on San Francisco beaches. Peskin’s district includes Fisherman’s Wharf and the Embarcadero, areas with borders that touch the water. Peskin wants to ensure that those areas, and beyond, see climate action.

“Our public utilities commission, which is our sewer purveyor, needs to quickly come up with strategies to how San Francisco can do its part in reducing discharges that can exacerbate red tides,” Peskin said.

Reached over the weekend, Bill Johnson, chief of the wastewater and enforcement division at the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, pushed back on the assertion that wastewater is to blame — the jury is still out, he says.

He says the water control board is spending $2.2 million annually to fund scientists studying the algal bloom to see if it is indeed caused by human wastewater.

“So if the solution is to ask the wastewater community to spend billions and billions of dollars for nutrients, then that’s what we’re going to do,” Johnson said. “But if the underlying causes are something else and if investing all that money isn’t going to solve the problem, we need to know that before we take that measure.”

Rosenfield countered Johnson’s statements by pointing to a 2020 report from James Cloern, senior scientist emeritus at the US Geological Survey, that showed San Francisco Bay had “high nutrient loadings, primarily from municipal wastewater,” leading to the “potential for high algal production. “

Regardless, understanding what’s causing the algal bloom is crucial, Rosenfield said, because it is almost certainly not a one-off. Without preventive measures, this could be an annual occurrence, rising when the waters warm, and fading as they cool.

It’s already beginning to spook Rosenfield, who isn’t easy to spook — he’s been a senior scientist at SF Baykeeper for four years, and was a lead scientist at The Bay Institute for nearly 11 years.

What really rocked him was seeing a number of a particular white sturgeon, a rare fish that’s part of a recreational fishery, show up dead on Stinson Beach.

They don’t wind up dead nearly as easily, being large, armored fish.

“Seeing that sturgeon is an indicator of a much larger problem,” he said.

Like a canary in a coal mine, but with scales.

The San Francisco Fire Department responded to a fire at a homeless encampment early Feb. 23, 2022.

One person died and three more people were injured during a fire at a San Francisco homeless encampment inside a freeway onramp early Wednesday morning, officials said.

The San Francisco Fire Department responded to the incident just after midnight at the Bosworth onramp on Interstate 280.

The department posted images on Twitter showing firefighters climbing into square holes in the underside of the overpass.

KTVU reported that the people were trapped inside the onramp’s “crawl space.”

Firefighters rescued four people from flames and performed life-saving measures. The department said three people are in critical condition and were transported to the hospital. One person died, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The incident occurred during a spell of unusually cold weather with overnight temperatures in San Francisco dropping into the 40s in recent days. Downtown SF hit 42 degrees at 3 am Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

San Francisco’s Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing is opening pop-up shelters during the cold snap for people without housing.

A recruit from the California Sheriff’s Department who was killed Tuesday in a freeway shootout in Oakland has been identified, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

David Nguyen, 28, was off duty when he was shot dead while driving home from the academy, authorities said. He was supposed to graduate in February.

Investigators have not yet determined if Nguyen was the target of the shooting.

“I don’t understand why anyone would choose to use their gun, probably for nothing,” the Alameda County Sheriff’s Sheriff said. JD Nelson told FOX 2 about the Bay Area. He called Nguyen “popular” and “highly motivated”.

Nguyen’s family and girlfriend were “dismayed” by his killing, FOX 2 reported.

After Nguyen was shot near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge toll booth, his vehicle crashed into a guardrail. According to FOX 2, he was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

“In loving memory of Recruit David V. Nguyen of the 172nd Academy of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a Twitter post along with photos of Nguyen.

Later Tuesday, employees from the sheriff’s office and the California Highway Patrol lined up and saluted his flag-draped coffin as it was loaded into a coroner’s van at an Oakland hospital.

“Our deputies have just loaded the body of our young police academy recruit for a law enforcement procession from Highland Hospital to our Coroner’s Bureau,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement shared with video on Twitter on Tuesday. “We are heartbroken and disturbed by this senseless act of gun violence.”

JOHANNESBURG (AP) – Desmond Tutu, South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, an uncompromising enemy of apartheid and a modern day activist for racial justice and LGBT rights, died on Sunday at the age of 90. South Africans, world leaders and people around the world mourned the death of the man who was believed to be the country’s moral conscience.

Tutu worked passionately, tirelessly and non-violently to tear down apartheid – South Africa’s brutal, decades-long regime of oppression against its black majority that only ended in 1994.

The spirited, outspoken clergyman used his pulpit as the first black bishop of Johannesburg and later the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, as well as frequent public demonstrations, to mobilize public opinion against racial inequality, both domestically and globally.

Nicknamed “The Arch”, the little tutu became a prominent figure in his nation’s history, likened to Nobel Prize winner Nelson Mandela, a prisoner during the white rule who became South Africa’s first black president. Tutu and Mandela shared a commitment to building a better, more equal South Africa.

When Mandela became president in 1994, Mandela appointed Tutu chairman of the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which exposed the abuses of apartheid.

Tutu’s death on Sunday “is another chapter of bereavement in our nation’s departure from a generation of outstanding South Africans who left us a liberated South Africa,” said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“From the sidewalks of the resistance in South Africa to the pulpits of the great cathedrals and places of worship around the world to the prestigious setting of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, the arch distinguished itself as a non-sectarian, integrative advocate of universal human rights. ” he said.

Tutu died peacefully at the Oasis Frail Care Center in Cape Town, the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Trust announced. He had been hospitalized several times since 2015 after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997.

“He has turned his own misfortunes into a teaching opportunity to raise awareness and alleviate the suffering of others,” said the Tutu Foundation. “He wanted the world to know that he had prostate cancer and that the sooner it was discovered, the better the chances of treating it.”

For the past few years he and his wife Leah have lived in a retirement home outside of Cape Town.

Former US President Barack Obama praised Tutu as “a moral compass for me and so many others. As a universal spirit, Archbishop Tutu was rooted in the struggle for liberation and justice in his own country, but also preoccupied with injustice everywhere. He has never lost his mischievous sense of humor and his willingness to find humanity in his adversaries. “

Tutu’s life was “entirely dedicated to serving his brothers and sisters for the common good. He was a true philanthropist, “said the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader and Tutu’s friend.

“His legacy is moral strength, moral courage and clarity,” said Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, in a video statement. “He felt for people. A lively joke eased Tutu’s tough messages and warmed otherwise grim protests, funerals and marches. He was brave and persistent, and a formidable force with a skilled talent at quoting appropriate scriptures to use the support for change.

The 1984 Nobel Peace Prize underscored his position as one of the most effective human rights advocates in the world, a responsibility he took seriously for the rest of his life.

With the end of apartheid and the first democratic elections in South Africa in 1994, Tutu celebrated the country’s multiracial society, calling it a “rainbow nation,” a phrase that captured the heady optimism of the time.

In 1990, after 27 years in prison, Mandela spent his first night at liberty in Tutu’s residence in Cape Town. Mandela later called Tutu “the archbishop of the people”.

Tutu also advocated human rights internationally, particularly LGBTQ rights and same-sex marriages.

“I would not worship a homophobic God,” he said in 2013 and started a campaign for LGBTQ rights in Cape Town. “I would refuse to go to homophobic heaven. No, I would say, ‘Sorry, I would much rather go somewhere else.’ “

Tutu said he was “as passionate about this campaign as I have been about apartheid. For me it’s on par. ”He was one of the most prominent religious leaders advocating for LGBTQ rights – an attitude that brought him into conflict with many in South Africa and across the continent, as well as within the Anglican Church.

South Africa, Tutu said, was a “rainbow nation” promising racial reconciliation and equality, despite disaffection with the African National Congress, the anti-apartheid movement that became the ruling party after the 1994 elections. His frank statements long after apartheid sometimes angered partisans who accused him of being biased or non-contact.

Tutu was particularly outraged by the South African government’s refusal to grant the Dalai Lama a visa, which prevented the Tibetan spiritual leader from attending Tutu’s 80th birthday and a planned meeting of Nobel Prize winners in Cape Town. The government rejected Tutu’s allegations and bowed to pressure from China, a key trading partner.

In early 2016, Tutu defended the reconciliation policy that ended white minority rule amid mounting frustration among some black South Africans who felt they had not seen the economic opportunities expected since the end of apartheid. Tutu had headed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that investigated the apartheid atrocities and granted amnesty to some perpetrators, but some people believed that more former white officials should be prosecuted.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born on October 7, 1931 in Klerksdorp, west of Johannesburg, and became a teacher before entering St. Peter’s Theological College in Rosetenville in 1958. He was ordained a priest in 1961 and became a chaplain at the University of Fort Hase six years later.

He then moved to the tiny South African kingdom of Lesotho and Great Britain, and returned home in 1975. He became Bishop of Lesotho, Chairman of the South African Council of Churches, and in 1985 the first black Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg. In 1986 Tutu was named Cape Town’s first black Archbishop. He ordained female priests and promoted gay priests.

Tutu was arrested in 1980 for joining a protest and his passport was later confiscated for the first time. He got it back for trips to the US and Europe, where he spoke to the UN Secretary General, the Pope and other church leaders.

Tutu called for international sanctions against South Africa and talks to end apartheid.

Tutu often held funerals after the massacres that marked the negotiation period 1990-1994. He railed against the political violence black against black and asked the crowd: “Why are we doing this to ourselves?” In a powerful moment, Tutu defused the anger of thousands of mourners at a township soccer stadium after the 1992 massacre of 42 people in Boipatong, and led the crowd in chants proclaiming their love for God and themselves.

As the head of the truth commission, Tutu and his panel heard harrowing statements about torture, murders and other atrocities during apartheid. At some of the hearings, Tutu cried openly.

“Without forgiveness there is no future,” he said at the time.

The Commission’s 1998 report found the forces of apartheid most to blame, but also found the African National Congress guilty of human rights abuses. The ANC sued for publication of the document and received a reprimand from Tutu. “I have not struggled to remove a group of those who thought they were tin gods to replace with others who are tempted to believe them,” Tutu said.

In July 2015, Tutu renewed his 1955 vows with Ms. Leah surrounded by their four children.

“You can see that we followed the biblical invitation: we have multiplied and are fruitful,” Tutu told the congregation. “But we all want to say thank you … We knew that we would be nothing without you.”

Tutu leaves behind his 66-year-old wife and their children.

Once asked how he would be remembered, he told The Associated Press, “He loved. He laughed. He cried. He was forgiven. He forgave. Very privileged. “

TOPEKA (AP) – Bob Dole, who overcame war wounds to become a sharp-tongued Senate leader from Kansas, a Republican presidential candidate, and then a symbol and celebrant of his dwindling generation of World War II veterans, has died. He was 98.

His wife, Elizabeth Dole, said in an announcement on social media that he died in his sleep early Sunday morning.

Dole announced in February 2021 that he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. During his 36-year career on Capitol Hill, Dole became one of the most influential MPs and party leaders in the Senate, combining a knack for compromise with a sharp joke that he often turned against himself but did not hesitate to turn against others, even.

He shaped tax policy, foreign policy, agricultural and food programs, and rights for the disabled, and enshrined protection against discrimination in employment, education, and public services in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The government offices and national parks accessible today, sidewalk ramps, and sign language interpreters at official local events are just some of the more visible hallmarks of his legacy and that of his colleagues brought together 30 years ago for this comprehensive civil rights law.

Dole dedicated his later years to the wounded veterans, their fallen comrades at Arlington National Cemetery, and the memory of the dwindling generation of World War II veterans.

Thousands of old soldiers gathered on the National Mall in 2004 for what Dole called “our last reunion” when the World War II Memorial was inaugurated there. He had been a driving force behind its creation.

“Our ranks have shrunk,” he said then. “But when we gather at dusk, it is illuminated by the knowledge that we have remained loyal to our comrades.”

Long vanished from Kansas, Dole lived in the capital, at the center of power and then in its shadow after his retirement, all the while living in the famous Watergate complex. When he left politics and joined a law firm with prominent Democrats, he joked that he brought his dog to work so he could speak to another Republican.

He tried three times to become president. The last was in 1996 when he won the Republican nomination, only to see President Bill Clinton re-elected. He sought his party’s presidential nomination in 1980 and 1988, and in 1976 he was the GOP’s vice-presidential candidate on the losing list with President Gerald Ford.

Through all of this he bore the mark of war. When Dole attacked a German position in northern Italy in 1945, he was hit by shrapnel, shattering two vertebrae and paralyzing his arms and legs. The young train driver spent three years in a hospital to recover and was never able to use his right hand again.

In order not to embarrass those who tried to shake his right hand, Dole always held a pen in it and held out his left hand.

Dole could be merciless with his rivals, Democrat or Republican. When George HW Bush defeated him in the New Hampshire Republican primary in 1988, Dole snapped, “Stop lying about my record.” If that pales with the searing insults in today’s political arena, it was shocking then.

But when Bush died in December 2018, old rivalries were forgotten when Dole appeared in front of Bush’s coffin in the Capitol rotunda. When a helper lifted him out of his wheelchair, an ailing and sad Dole slowly sat up and greeted his former archenemy with a trembling chin with his left hand.

In a vice-presidential debate with Walter Mondale two decades earlier, Dole had known and boldly described all wars in America in this century as “Democratic wars”. Mondale shot back, Dole had just “well earned his reputation as a Beilmann”.

Dole initially denied saying what he had just said on this public stage, but then relented, eventually admitting that he had gone too far. “I should take the carotid artery,” he said, “and I did – my own.”

Despite his sober demeanor, he firmly believed in the Senate as an institution and enjoyed the respect and even affection of many Democrats. Just days after Dole announced his dire diagnosis of cancer, President Joe Biden visited him at his home to wish him well. The White House said the two were close friends from their Senate days.

In a statement on Sunday, Biden recalled that one of his first meetings outside the White House after being sworn in as President with the Doles was at their Washington home.

“As with all real friendships, no matter how much time has passed, we picked up exactly where we left off, as if we had only laughed yesterday in the Senate Chamber or had often discussed the big issues of the day.” said Biden. “I saw the same light, courage, and determination in his eyes that I’ve seen so many times.”

Dole won a seat in Congress in 1960 and represented a western district of Kansas House. He was promoted to the Senate eight years later when Republican incumbent Frank Carlson retired.

There he angered his Senate colleagues with violently partisan and sarcastic rhetoric delivered at the behest of President Richard Nixon. The Kansan was rewarded for his loyalty by chairing the Republican National Committee in 1971 before Nixon’s presidency collapsed in the Watergate scandal.

In the 1980s and 1990s he was committee chairman, majority leader and minority leader in the Senate. In total, he was the Senate Republican chairman for nearly 11½ years, a record until Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell broke it in 2018.

After the Republicans gained control of the Senate, Dole became chairman of the finance committee on tax information and received applause from Deficit Hawks and others for his handling of a 1982 tax bill persuading Ronald Reagan’s White House to add $ 100 billion in revenue increase to reduce the federal budget deficit.

“When Bob asked you to do something, it was it. There are so many things I can tell you that we could solve by mentioning Bob’s name,” said former GOP Senator Pat Roberts, who is with Dole in the Congress delegation from Kansas served.

But some more conservative Republicans were appalled that Dole had pushed for higher taxes. Georgia MP Newt Gingrich called him “the tax collector of the welfare state.”

Dole became Senate Chairman in 1985 and was either majority or minority leader depending on the party until he resigned in 1996 to take up the presidency.

This campaign, Dole’s last, was troubled from the start. He ran out of money that spring and the Democrats’ ads drew the same brush of GOP candidate and divisive MP in the Party’s House of Representatives, Gingrich, as Republicans trying to eliminate Medicare. Clinton won by a large margin.

He also wondered about his age because he ran for president at the age of 73 – long before Biden was elected weeks before his 78th birthday in 2020.

Exiled into private life, Dole became an elderly statesman who helped Clinton pass a chemical weapons treaty. He also cultivated his wife’s political ambitions. Elizabeth Dole ran unsuccessfully for Republican presidential candidacy in 2000 and then served as Senator from North Carolina.

Dole also made himself popular as a self-deprecating promoter of the impotence drug Viagra and other products.

He continued to speak out on issues and support political candidates.

In 2016, Dole initially assisted former Florida Governor Jeb Bush in nominating GOP President. He later got warm to Donald Trump and eventually supported him.

But six weeks after the 2020 election, with Trump still refusing to admit and promoting unsubstantiated claims of election fraud, Dole told The Kansas City Star, “The election is over.”

He said, “It’s a pretty bitter pill for Trump, but it’s a fact that he’s lost.”

In September 2017, Congress awarded Dole its highest recognition for outstanding service to the nation, a gold medal from Congress. That happened a decade after he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Congress again honored Dole in 2019 by promoting him from Army Captain to Colonel in recognition of the military service that earned him two Purple Hearts.

Robert Joseph Dole was born on July 22, 1923 in Russell, an agricultural and oil community in western Kansas. He was the oldest of four children. His father ran a cream and egg business and ran a granary, and his mother sold sewing machines and vacuum cleaners to support the family during the economic downturn. Dole attended the University of Kansas for two years before joining the Army in 1943.

Dole met Phyllis Holden, a therapist at a military hospital, while he was recovering from his war injuries in 1948. They were married and had a daughter, Robin. In 1972 the couple divorced.

Dole began his political career as a student at Washburn University and won a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives.

He met his second wife, Elizabeth Dole, while she was working for the Nixon White House. She also served on the Federal Trade Commission and Secretary of Transportation and Labor while Dole was in the Senate. They married in 1975.

Dole published a memoir of his wartime experiences and recovery in 2005, “One Soldier’s Story.” The Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas maintains an archive of Kansas World War II veterans.
