Spring Summer is the recording project of San Francisco-based musician Jennifer Furches, who spent a large part of her career in the aughts making a name for herself by touring and playing with musicians like Cass McCombs, Coconut Records, and Ben Lee. About a year ago, in 2021, she finally launched her own solo career and released a couple of delicate, folksy guitar songs on Dangerbird Records. Now, Furches announces the arrival of her forthcoming debut album, TEARS, out July 15 and produced closely by friend Jenny lee Lindberg of Warpaint.

Below, NYLON exclusively premieres the video of the album’s lead single, “Mountaineer,” a sturdier and more robust version of the indie rock first previewed by the musician and multi-instrumentalist. Over shuffling guitar and drums infused with a crisp and clean feeling, Furches works through overcoming life’s obstacles with a partner while maintaining self-preservation through writerly, graceful lyricism. “I’m tough as nails/ I am a mountaineer/ I will climb these jagged peaks and leave the valleys for you dear,” she sings. Any hint of tension in its lyrics is tempered by the song’s grand and sweeping sound, like you’re also perched on the mountain peak next to her.

Of the song, Furches writes in an email: “There’s a running theme on the album of losing yourself in another person, and this song is about the push-and-pull between the feeling of ‘I would do anything for you’ and ‘ I can’t do anything for you, I need to be strong and do things for me.’”

In its miniature-filled music video directed by Jon Sortland, she captures that feeling of towering above everything else quite literally, recreating a haunting but cozy world through dollhouse sets and beautifully illustrated natural landscapes. Furches herself is seen interacting with the world through clever editing that makes it look like she’s inhabiting the sets, but is simultaneously caught setting them up in the first place — adding another meaningful layer to the song’s contemplation.

Watch “Mountaineer” below, and read on to learn a bit more about Furches. And be sure to catch her record TEARS when it drops on July 15.

What are you up to right now — describe your surroundings.

I’m sitting in my practice space in our garage in San Francisco. There’s nothing soundproof about it and I live on an echo-y alley, but luckily the neighbors don’t seem to mind that the kids and I have started a 90’s cover band.

What’s the story behind your new song, “Mountaineer”?

I wrote the first incarnation of Mountaineer before I had kids. I was 4 years into a relationship, and kind of passing that puppy-love stage where you want to just do everything for someone and be with them all the time… and starting to feel like I had lost — or forgotten — about myself. Then after kids, many more years into the same relationship, the same feelings were hitting me. It’s so easy in life and love to give yourself away. I had to make a very conscious effort to find some balance.

I had never done anything with that song, but it was suddenly resonating heavily with me again. I played it for my cousin Jason and he had all these great suggestions to make it something new which appealed to me. I loved the feeling of it having lived so long as one song, and then getting to transform it into another version of itself. As I guess I wished to do. (Thanks to Jen we recorded the old version, too — we’ll put that out one day!)

How did you land on the idea of using miniatures for your “Mountaineer” video; they’re really having a moment right now.

I feel like miniatures have been heavily utilized forever! But I guess you mean maybe they’re being used in a more obvious way, as we did, rather than the old-school Hollywood trickery?

You know — I just loved Jon Sortland’s work so much! He made all these great videos for his band The Shins (a few of which use miniatures) and he is just constantly making things that make me laugh and reel me in. I feel like he finds a wonderful way of mixing the magical world and real life. So the miniatures came from his experience with them… but in the end when COVID hit and we ultimately had to call on my husband Roman to shoot my part of the video, I thought it was kind of a fun twist of fate because Roman has shot a lot of second unit and special effects work through his career which often involves miniatures — so I felt like there was a nice connection there between the two of them.

After spending a large part of your career playing with other artists, how does it feel to be releasing music of your own?

Great! For so many years I was scared to record my own music. It was so much easier to be a sort of hired gun (and of course also get to play with musicians I admired). But now I just want to do hard things. I want to learn and challenge myself. It’s all one big puzzle… and I love puzzles!

In the spirit of the song, what’s the last mountain you climbed and do you have a favorite?

Last summer: Chimney Rock outside of Asheville, NC with my dad and my sister Amanda. I’m from North Carolina and spent my life in those mountains. They hold a special place in my heart.

DENVER — San Francisco Giants infielder Tommy La Stella was reinstated Monday from the 10-day injured list and made his season debut at Colorado.

In other moves, the Giants transferred right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (right ankle inflammation) to the 60-day injured list and optioned outfielder Luis González to Triple-A Sacramento. Right-hander Yunior Marte was optioned to Sacramento on Sunday, and the Giants selected the contract of right-hander Mauricio Llovera.

La Stella, in the second year of an $18.75 million, three-year contract, missed time in his first year with the club due to a broken right hand and a hamstring strain. He underwent surgery in October to repair an Achilles’ tendon issue, and the recovery time forced him to miss the first five weeks of the season.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler welcomed La Stella’s return, saying his veteran presence bolsters clubhouse stability and resolve. La Stella’s defensive versatility also gives Kapler additional flexibility in managing the lineup, and his bat adds to the team’s overall fire power.

“Tommy is one of the better plate appearances in baseball right now, simple as that,” Kapler said. “He has great discipline, fouls off pitches, is extremely competitive in the batter’s box. He’s kind of the epitome of what we want our hitters to be, make a lot of contact, drive the baseball, occasionally draw a walk here and there and keep the line moving.”

Kapler also said that DeSclafani had not encountered a setback in his rehab of an ankle injury that has sidelined him since April 22. He said DeSclafani and team doctors and trainers have settled on a rehab program to gradually build back his arm and leg strength so that he’s ready to fill a slot in the rotation when he returns.

“A long, slow ramp for a pitcher is the most protective thing we can do for them,” Kapler said, adding that “getting him back to the big leagues healthy and strong and capable of taking down a full workload is the most important piece of this puzzle.”

Five-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore celebrated his 39th birthday by knocking out Yaya Olorunsola in his debut as a professional boxer.

He knocked down Olorunsola to the canvas unconscious in the fourth round with a powerful right hook in the co-main event of Gamebred Boxing in Jackson, Mississippi.

Frank Gore’s notable NFL numbers

The former rusher, who holds the NFL record for the most games played by a running back (241), participated in an exhibition fight as part of the undercard of the Jake Paul-Tyron Woodley showdown in December. He lost via split decision.

Gore is an NFL veteran who played for five teams in 16 seasons. He last played with the New York Jets 2020. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round in 2005, and stayed with the team until 2014. All his Pro Bowl selections were made during his time with the Niners.

Frank Gore: NFL fixture for 16 seasons

He played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2015 to 2017, for the Miami Dolphins in 2018, the Buffalo Bills in 2019, before moving to the Jets in 2020.

The 39-year-old is known for the longevity of his career, which is particularly noteworthy given the position that he plays. He has tallied a total of 16,000 rushing yards in his entire stint with professional football, a number that ranks third in the history of the NFL, trailing only Emmitt Smith who recorded 18,355 yards, and Walter Payton, who racked up 16,726.

Gore recently announced that he would hang up his cleats up soon, and that he intends to sign a one-day contract with San Francisco so that he could formally retire as a 49er.

City leaders, arts organizations and community groups celebrated today the grand opening of Brookfield Properties’ transformative 5M mixed-use cultural arts district with ceremonies at The Parks at 5M, downtown San Francisco’s newest park.

“I am so excited to open 5M just as we are seeing more residents, workers, and visitors coming together as our City bounces back from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said San Francisco Mayor London Breed. “From affordable housing to new outdoor space and cultural programming, this community-led project addresses a wide range of neighborhood needs that for too long have been neglected. I want to thank Brookfield Properties and the entire SoMa community for their continued work and commitment to the future of this neighborhood.”

Since 5M’s groundbreaking in 2019, the billion-dollar development has transitioned four acres of underutilized parking lots in the SoMa neighborhood at 5th, Mission and Howard streets into a pedestrian oriented hub of creativity, commerce, and community. Developer Brookfield Properties has completed construction of the 25-story 415 Natoma office building, The George apartment building with 302 rental units, and The Parks at 5M. Additionally, two historic buildings were restored; the Camelline Building that is earmarked for retail and nonprofit uses and the Dempster Building, which Brookfield Properties donated to CAST (Community Arts Stabilization Trust) for arts and cultural uses.

The grand opening celebration marked the completion of construction of Brookfield Properties’ components and the opening of The Parks at 5M to the public.

Community Programming Begins this Spring at The Parks at 5M

A major community benefit is the new $20 million privately-owned public park that features a performance area, undulating landscaped knolls patterned after Northern California landscapes, a children’s playground, and a dog run framed by the new and historic buildings. Two striking 30-foot-tall 3-dimensional sinuous steel canopies serve a dual purpose as works of art and to calm breezes. The Parks at 5M are the City’s largest ground-level privately-owned public open space (POPOS) at 26,100 sq. ft. — nearly the size of six basketball courts. Brookfield is providing security on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Beginning this spring, community programming for the Parks at 5M will feature a mix of events, performances, art and food curated by Brookfield Properties, arts and cultural nonprofits and other innovators such as CAST, Kultivate Labs and, Off the Grid. Film screenings, performance art, dance and fitness classes, live music, art exhibits, and Filipino cultural celebrations are among the activities being planned.

“The Parks at 5M help fulfill a civic need for more open spaces in the neighborhood for residents to play, socialize and celebrate,” said San Francisco Supervisor Matt Haney, who represents this area of SoMa. “The diversity of offerings and opportunities here created a special place that benefits people of all ages and backgrounds.”

“5M underscores our commitment to the neighborhood and our belief in how melding creativity, cultural arts and commerce in unique ways builds stronger communities,” said Swathi Bonda, Sr. Director, Development for Brookfield Properties. “It is a place that binds us together to relax, have fun, learn and work — grounded in programming for the arts, music and cultural activities.”

Bonda said that new tenants, programming and residents will bring energy to the site. The Dempster Building at 447 Minna Street is home to arts nonprofits PUSH Dance Co. and Women’s Audio Mission. The Dempster Building also has a floor for Pop Up Art projects and a black-box theater. Thumbtack, the modern home management platform, recently signed a lease at 415 Natoma and residents are moving into The George. Brookfield Properties said that it expects to announce new leases involving food, nonprofits and local retailers in the near future.

Today’s ceremony featured a ribbon cutting and performance by PUSH Dance Co.

“Arts and culture play a central role in preserving the fabric of a neighborhood,” said CAST CEO Moy Eng. “CAST is pleased to be partnering with Brookfield in this effort to secure and steward a cultural space where artists and creatives can continue to thrive in SoMa. Arts and culture organizations—groups like Women’s Audio Mission and PUSH Dance—are so essential to our city because they’re pushing the boundaries of creativity and equity while also creating community cohesion. At 447 Minna, we want to ensure artists have a place to grow within the community, to interact with local residents, and add to the neighborhood vitality as a whole.”

The unique configuration of 5M’s parks and buildings are designed to bring people together in an exchange of ideas. The expansive lobbies for 415 Natoma office building and The George open to the parks to promote lively street level interaction.

“5M is inspired by SoMa and its network of alleys, 5M’s design weaves together a tapestry of neighborhood history, arts, and business with new public space at the center,” said SITELAB urban studio Principal Laura Crescimano, which partnered on the master planning for 5 M.

The 415 Natoma 640,000-square-foot Class A office building features a “hospitality-driven” wall-less lobby with curated retail, food and beverage options; large floor plates; and over 27,000 square feet of outdoor terraces. The building was designed by renowned architect KPF.

“415 Natoma welcomes the public at its base with an open lobby, integrating seamlessly into the ground plane. The layered and split massing of the towers addresses the surrounding built context with a façade that employs a variety of textures, patterns, and colors,” said Trent Tesch, AIA, KPF Design Principal.

Brookfield Properties began leasing units at The George in January. The new 20-story rental apartment building features 302 apartments, including 211 market rate and 91 BMR middle-income homes. The George has the highest percentage of middle income BMR units on site in City history. It features a double-height public lobby with integrated retail and co-working library; artwork in common areas by local women, BIPOC artists and other artists; 24/7 concierge service; a 16th-floor profitable clubroom and open-air amenity deck with sweeping views of Potrero Hill and the San Francisco Bay; state-of-the-art gym; and much more. More than 4,600 SF of retail is planned in a cafe zone along pedestrian-only paseo on North Mary Street.

Overall, 5M will create approximately 856 total new residential units onsite and in the neighborhood, including 245 affordable residential units for middle-income households, seniors and formerly homeless families.

Brookfield Properties worked with exceptional organizations to advance the project during the pandemic. In addition to KPF and SITELAB, !melk and Cliff Lowe Associates designed the open spaces at 5M. The George residential building is designed by architectural firm Ankrom Moisan and constructed by Build Group Inc. Architectural Resources Group led the rehabilitation of the historic Dempster Building. For the 415 Natoma office building, House & Robertson Architects is the executive architect and Swinerton Builders constructed the building.

This exciting move will bring a white glove decluttering service to South Florida residents and businesses, as well as a showroom where they can buy and sell high-quality, pre-loved goods

When entrepreneur and investor Luis Perez saw a gap in the marketplace for a high-tech, white glove haul service, he decided to create one—and in 2014, Remoov was launched. Using original algorithms to automate the appraisal and resale process of pre-owned items quickly and efficiently, Remoov helps homeowners and corporations declutter by picking up unwanted goods, selling what they can for the owner’s profit, donating what can be repurposed and responsibly disposing of remaining items. After a successful 2020, due in part to the work-from-home lifestyle spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, Remoov more than doubled its profits and is now going national—expanding to Miami from its headquarters in San Francisco.

With this expansion, South Florida residents will get multiple benefits, like a top-of-the-line decluttering service right at their fingertips, the ability to earn 50% of profits from their resold goods and tax benefits for donated items. Goods that can be resold will be done both online and through Remoov’s own showroom. Goods that have been earmarked for donation will be sent to different non-profit organizations in South Florida and clients thereby receive a tax compliant donation receipt. Items that cannot be sold or donated will be disposed of responsibly, in line with Remoov’s commitment to sustainability and the environment.

For consumers, using Remoov’s services is as simple as a three-step process. Customers start by taking photos of the items they want to get rid of, and either texting or uploading them to Remoov’s website with the item name, brand, original price and age. Within one business day, they’ll receive an estimate that includes the cost of the pickup—which is based solely on volume—and, after careful analysis by Remoov’s in-house appraisers, a list of which items can be resold and at what price . Finally, after accepting the estimate, customers will receive a link via text or email where they can schedule a date and time frame for pickup.

Remoov’s expansion to Miami will also come with a third location of its signature showroom, which is purpose-built so consumers can both buy secondhand goods and make money off their own. With the original showroom in San Francisco and a second now taking over a large warehouse in Doral, the company is credited with having the largest collection of quality, pre-owned items for every taste, style and budget. From well-known brands to rare finds, every item there is carefully inspected and valued by Remoov’s team of appraisers and sold at a significant reduction from its original price. Shoppers can pick up their purchases locally or have them delivered throughout the US

“When it came time to grow Remoov and move into a new market, South Florida was the obvious choice,” said Perez. “I am so excited to bring our bespoke service to Miami residents and look forward to making our purpose-built, unique showroom an indelible part of the local community.”

Following its popularity in the Bay Area, Remoov’s showroom is poised to be a hotspot for designers, realtors, commercial and residential buildings and living communities in South Florida that are staging or decorating new spaces. It’s also a top destination for anyone passionate about sustainability and finding rare luxury goods at an affordable price.

REMOOV, A SAN FRANCISCO-BASED, TECH-ENABLED DECLUTTERING AND RESELLING SERVICE, MAKES ITS EAST COAST US DEBUT IN MIAMI

Tweet this

With the original showroom in san francisco and a second now taking over a large warehouse in Miami Dade County, the company is credited with having the largest collection of quality, pre-owned items for every taste, style and budget.

Following its popularity in the Bay AreaRemoov’s showroom is poised to be a hotspot for designers, realtors, commercial and residential buildings and living communities in South Florida that are staging or decorating new spaces. It’s also a top destination for anyone passionate about sustainability and finding rare luxury goods at an affordable price.

When entrepreneur and investor Luis Perez saw a gap in the marketplace for a high tech, white glove haul service, he decided to create one—and in 2014, Remoov was launched. Using original algorithms to Automate the appraisal and resale process of pre-owned items quickly and efficiently, Remoov helps homeowners and corporations declutter by picking up unwanted goods, selling what they can for the owner’s profit, donating what can be recycled and responsibly disposing of remaining items. After a successful 2020, due in part to the work from home lifestyle spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, Remoov more than doubled its profits and is now going national—expanding to Miami from its headquarters in San Francisco.

With this expansion, South Florida residents will get multiple benefits, like a top-of-the-line decluttering service right at their fingertips, the ability to earn 50% of profits from their resold goods and tax benefits for donated items. Goods that can be resold will be done both online and through Remoov’s own showroom. Goods that have been earmarked for donation will be sent to various non-profit organizations in South Florida and clients thereby receive a tax compliant donation receipt. Items that cannot be sold or donated will be disposed of responsibly, in line with Remoov’s commitment to sustainability and the environment.

After more than a decade of construction, the much-anticipated One Steuart Lane is now complete and welcoming its first homeowners in what is the city’s last chance to live in a new condominium on the San Francisco waterfront.

The premier, ultra-luxury building continues to fetch the highest price per square foot in San Francisco, with bay view homes selling for over $ 4,000 per square foot, a price the city has not seen since 2018, according to renowned sales and marketing broker Polaris Pacific; One Steuart Lane has sold several apartments that exceeded this threshold.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), one of the most influential architecture, interior design, engineering and urban planning firms in the world, One Steuart Lane is a unique residential building in San Francisco, the exterior of which is gleaming with solid Roman travertine from quarries in North – and central Italy. Beautiful and durable, it is the same stone from which the great works of early Rome were built.

“With One Steuart Lane, our goal was to strike an effortless balance between a deeply modern sensibility and a timeless presence in San Francisco,” said Christopher Brandt, senior vice president of asset management at Paramount Group, Inc., the developer of One Steering lane. “The team took inspiration from the waterfront, and every element of the building was artfully constructed to maximize bay views, including floor-to-ceiling windows, impressive patios and balconies that open out from the living space. We see this as a golden opportunity to own a home in an iconic San Francisco property. “

Starting this week, four extraordinary model houses are available for viewing by private agreement. Two were designed by Liaigre and the other by FrenchCalifornia and ASH.

Priced from $ 1.2 million to over $ 10 million, each residence evokes a sense of unparalleled sophistication, with expansive glass windows and two-meter-high ceilings that enhance the colors emanating from the water. The residences range from one to three bedroom apartments ranging in size from approximately 900 to 3,000 square feet, as well as remarkably large penthouses measuring up to 6,200 square feet.

When the first residents moved in, they were greeted by the 24-hour concierge in the beautifully designed two-story lobby and served by a private, closed valet parking service for their cars. In their free time, they enjoy the timeless common spaces, designed by Rottet Studio and showcasing the European brands Molteni Group and Liaigre, as well as an extensive collection of amenities on the second floor, the centerpiece of which is the flexible indoor / outdoor owner’s lounge. This lovely space includes a gourmet kitchen and dining room with a lush terraced garden and outdoor grills overlooking Cupid’s Span and the bay. In the adjoining room there is a state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor wellness center, which is complemented by a fitness center with a private training area, an outdoor hot spa, an Effegibi sauna and a steam bath, as well as a vertical shower system with massage jets and optional aromatherapy.

To maximize this connection, SOM created the building’s exclusive collection of Waterfront Terrace Residences every three to four floors. These houses have huge sliding glass doors, some as tall as 4.50 m wide and 2.70 m high, that separate at the corner to fully open the houses to their wrap around 12 m high terraces and city and bay views to open. Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living, these residences are fully furnished with intricately designed wall unit dividers designed by Habitat Horticulture Experience like no other in a residential San Francisco building.

“Our holistic design approach has enabled us to build a striking tower that fits seamlessly into the urban fabric,” says Mark Schwettmann, Design Director at SOM. “The location of One Steuart Lane was the central inspiration for this project. This extraordinary, last of its kind, waterfront site provided information about the building: shape, structure, space, materiality and detailing. “

Beyond its physical beauty, One Steuart Lane achieves the highest environmental standards in the city without sacrificing luxury. With the goal of LEED Gold certification, the building is considered a leading example of sustainable architecture and design on the west coast. Key ecocentric features include a state-of-the-art mechanical system that allows heat to be transferred from one side of the building to the other, making it possible to take advantage of San Francisco’s bright sunlight even on cooler days. Rooftop solar water heaters provide renewable energy and save 250,000 pounds of CO2 emissions annually compared to a gas boiler. The commitment to the union of beauty and performance ends at the top of the tower, where vacuum tube solar arrays collect energy while gently filtering light through the top of the building.

Sales at One Steuart Lane have remained strong during the Covid-19 pandemic. The majority of the recent buyers are from San Francisco and the greater Bay Area, which underscores the attractiveness of the building’s location and offering. Owners include those looking for the “right size” to accommodate the more common work-from-home and entertainment-from-home setups that require larger living space, empty nests that are now touring the world and the ones Freedom want to lock up and leave without the maintenance of a high-maintenance apartment, first-time buyers who prefer the waterfront location, and those looking for a pied-à-terre that allows them to be present in the city for occasional work and social events.

“This unique opportunity to live in a modern, world-class building on the San Francisco waterfront makes One Steuart Lane the first choice for home buyers who insist on the best of city life,” said Paul Zeger, partner at Polaris Pacific, who oversees the Sales and marketing. “The rebirth of the Embarcadero, which began in 1989, culminates in the addition of this elegant residential complex.”
