SAN FRANCISCO, 22 July 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Gradient, a company founded by thermal scientists to reimagine HVAC and create products that are good for the planet and great for cooling and heating homes, announces the development of its first product, a replacement for the window air conditioner. Gradient will replace the traditional window air conditioner with a more efficient, space-saving, and better-designed solution that keeps homes cool using advanced heat pump technology and a climate-friendly refrigerant. Customers can now sign up for the exclusive beta program at Gradientcomfort.com.

Air conditioning is essential to quality of life and work productivity, yet the basic design of window air conditioners hasn't changed in 50 years. All too often, the very same air conditioning systems that make life bearable in hot weather are also contributing to climate change; heating and cooling systems are responsible for 20% of global CO2 emissions.

“Gradient is on a mission to cool the world by redesigning every home to be more comfortable and healthier for the people who live there – without compromising the environment. We believe we can build a better home air conditioning solution while fighting climate change,” said Vince RomaniCEO of Gradient. “Air conditioning is one of the most important amenities to keep people comfortable and productive in a warming world, but too many people struggle with outdated window air conditioners that are clunky, noisy, heavy and inefficient. Gradient offers beautiful, intuitive design, a more efficient, sleek, quieter air conditioning experience and climate-friendly refrigerants. Building better air conditioning is one of the most effective ways to help people stay comfortable at home while reducing carbon emissions from HVAC systems.”

The Gradient is easy to install and doesn't block the view like a traditional window air conditioner. It offers the benefits of a professional heat pump system at a fraction of the cost. It can cool and heat all year round and is easy to operate via a mobile app.

Founded in 2017, Gradient has raised over $13 million in venture capital. Investors include Ajax Strategies, At One Ventures, Prime Coalition, Incite Ventures, Autodesk Foundation, Urban WeMagic Hour and leading Silicon Valley angels. The company has also received over $9 million in government grants from the U.S. Department of Energy, the California Energy Commission, and the California Strategic Growth Council.

“Residential air conditioning is an underestimated aspect of the general climate change discussion, and we see a great opportunity for Gradient to shake up the residential air conditioning and ventilation space by developing a significantly improved, climate-friendly replacement for the traditional window air conditioner,” said Milo WernerPartner of Ajax Strategies. “Millions of Americans need air conditioning, but their options are limited to outdated window and floor units that block their view, make a lot of noise, and contribute to climate change. Current technology hasn't improved in decades. With more people working from home, there is a higher level of consumer interest in a quality home air conditioner that really works. Gradient has a great product and an outstanding team that is thinking creatively about meeting the needs of this market with a beautiful, intuitive, consumer-focused solution.”

Gradient emerged from Otherlab, a private research and development laboratory in San Francisco which has leveraged over $40 million in government grants to create hardtech companies in manufacturing, energy, and robotics. Founded by thermal scientists and engineers and backed by talent from giants like Tesla and Nest, the Gradient team is uniquely qualified to solve this problem.

One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small. If houses came with a soundtrack, the groove for this historic San Francisco manse would surely be psychedelic. Radically reimagined by AD100 designer Nicole Hollis, the mind-bending abode pays tribute to the city’s progressive cultural legacy as well as the audacious tastes of Hollis’s clients. “It’s Grateful Dead meets Burning Man meets Marrakech meets Victorian posh, with a generous dose of contemporary design and art,” Hollis says, tracing the elaborate web of influences that converge in this hallucinatory vision of modern hippie-luxe. “I wanted to bring rock and roll into the life of the house, not just as an applied gloss but as part of its DNA,” she adds.

Less florid than San Francisco’s Victorian-era Painted Ladies, the Colonial Revival-style home was designed by architect Edward John Vogel and built in 1897. Its location in the storied Haight-Ashbury district placed the house at the rainbow-bright center of 1960s counterculture , the era when Gene Estribou, a previous homeowner, opened a recording studio on the dwelling’s attic level. The Grateful Dead laid down some of their earliest tracks there, as did Quicksilver Messenger Service, Steve Miller Band, and other mandarins of the San Francisco sound.

“The clients really pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and into their world,” says designer Nicole Hollis.

The kitchen is outfitted with a Martino Gamper table and chairs, vintage Moroccan pendants, a backsplash of zellige tiles, a Gaggenau oven, Waterworks fixtures, and a custom bronze hood.

Working with Richard Beard Architects, Hollis completely transformed the house, essentially demolishing the interiors and reinventing them with a greater sense of symmetry as well as accommodations for a contemporary kitchen and generous baths and closets. Beard also designed a trim modern addition to the back of the house for the new kitchen and family room on the main level, a bar and screening room below, and bedrooms on the floor above. “The primary façades—the front and one of the sides—were sacred, so that part of the program was more of a pure restoration,” Beard explains. “For the interior, we didn’t want to ape Colonial Revival or any other period style, but we tried to be sympathetic to the original structure in terms of proportions and materials. Nicole and the clients had already established a singular aesthetic for the house, and our job was to help fulfill the vision.”

“I wanted to bring rock and roll into the life of the house, not just as an applied gloss but as part of its DNA.”

That aesthetic was nothing short of sensational. Drawing on the combined talents of craftspeople from around the globe, Hollis and her team detailed the rooms with a staggering array of bespoke architectural details and decorative appliqués that nod to the clients’ obsession with rock and roll and hippie drug culture, their fascination with traditional Moroccan design, and their seemingly unquenchable thirst for dazzling color and pattern. Those passions found expression in plaster moldings carved with marijuana leaves and peace symbols; intricate trelliswork and grilles handmade in Morocco; a comprehensive program of custom bronze hardware, made by the Belgian company Van Cronenburg, which incorporates motifs of pot leaves, mushrooms, and hearts, interpreted in a redolent language of Eastlake style and the Aesthetic Movement; and a spectacular range of decorative painting and finishes executed by Los Angeles–based Londubh Studio, including glow-in-the-dark stenciling in the wife’s kaleidoscopic dressing room and images drawn from vintage acid tabs that appear in the decorative borders in the husband’s trippy office.

“Home air conditioning is an underrated aspect of the overall conversation around climate change, and we see a big opportunity for Gradient to disrupt the home HVAC space by developing a much-improved, climate-friendly replacement for the traditional window unit AC,” said Milo Werner, Partners with Ajax Strategies. “Millions of Americans need an air conditioning solution, but their options are limited to out-of-date window and floor units that block their view, make a lot of noise, and contribute to climate change.
When designing a maximalist oasis in San Francisco, Emilie Munroe says the design process “started the old-fashioned way, with a package of torn magazine inspiration images”. The designer and her clients communicated by email and by exchanging links and online portfolios. “Also, since the project was carried out entirely while on-site protection, when face-to-face interactions and time on site were scarce, it seemed like the perfect old-fashioned way to start a successful customer relationship.”

The end product resulted in spaces that exuded warmth, color and personality as Munroe knew immediately that the design of this home would “revolve around pieces and ideas that exude joy, arouse curiosity and have a strong aesthetic voice”. She adds that wallflowers (that is, the type of people, not the decor) are definitely not welcome here!

“We wanted the house to have a wow factor, an impression the moment you walk in, and then reveal its vibrant mix of unique, layered elements as guests spend time in each room,” explains Munroe. “Happiness was the overarching feeling the rooms wanted to convey, but happiness where you can still find a cozy place to read a book and relax and unwind.”

The end product is a room with velvet upholstered sofas from Egg Collective and custom-made ottomans, all of which “exude elegance yet remain soft and inviting”.

“The inspiration pictures [for the dining room] Provided by our client, showed warm, collected, vibrant homes that weren’t afraid to share a certain personality, ”explains Munroe. “We knew straight away that our design had to be about pieces and ideas that exude joy, arouse curiosity and have a strong aesthetic voice. The tufted, flowered lead dining chairs are a great example of this spirit. ”

“We love the moment in a jewelry store,” reveals Munroe – “and this playful pink jungle scene is one of our favorite examples.” The designer adds that this particular wallpaper “was one of our last selections and we found almost every room in the house has an animal or print that creates an unexpected and happy line in the house. ”

In addition, Munroe advises that “when applying a wallpaper mural, the key to how the mural is read as a whole is how the ceiling is treated.” so that the ceiling is read as a continuation of heaven. “

There were many other theaters. There were some that I call one-offs that I only built once for. I stayed with some of them for 10 or 20 years. There were several companies that I stayed with. When their productions showed up, I went ahead and made them. Sometimes I was technical director, sometimes I designed. Of course, at that age, I had a lot more energy.

Usually the technical director oversees all technical elements – that doesn’t mean he or she does them all. I would make sure we have the people on the ground and the equipment. My focus was on construction and painting. That was my strong point, but we usually hired people for sound, light, video and so on. It’s similar here, my strengths are building, painting. I do a lot with software, down to background scenes when we need them. Eric Seale will take care of much of the video. I don’t do a lot with video. I have the software, I just don’t know how to use it.

Process for set ideas

Usually we have an initial production meeting where we come up with the idea. There is a lot of give and take for what we want. I read the script. Maybe I’ll go to other shows and then finally formulate what I think, and at the first production meeting I present my designs and thoughts through photos or quick little drawings, then it goes on.

Once we have decided where to go, I’ll start rendering and drawing. Once that’s done, I started a big call for volunteers and that’s it. The volunteers come in and we have it built and painted. It pretty much follows the designs. Every now and then there will be a little change, but not often. We do 10 shows a year and there is no time for changes.

“I wanted to feel like I was living in a country house in the middle of England.” Emphasis on feeling. Michelle L. Morby – painter, photographer, and stationery enthusiast – actually planned a rebirth of the tiny kitchen in her San Francisco home. An enclosed conservatory at the rear was torn out to make room (the former kitchen, one room away, was converted into a hidden guest toilet to fix the plumbing.) Designer Lynn Kloythanomsup from Landed Interiors & Homes brought together countless contemporary details to make the fantasy come true. And the house cooperated.

“It’s a craft house from 1914,” explains Kloythanomsup. “It’s kind of a loose language, so it was just about how you can make it more country.” A potpourri of materials conjures up the “dilapidated” atmosphere that Morby wanted, but still feels classy and durable: lacquered wooden floors, built-in cupboards, exposed bricks, nickel fittings, a custom plate rack inspired by Downton Abbey and Calacatta marble in an elegant . ends offset Dupont edge. An antique Swedish butcher’s block on casters has been rolled up to be used exactly as its maker intended.

An artist friend of the homeowner Michelle L. Morby, Jonathan Anzalone, made the combination of drying rack and shelf from a piece of reclaimed maple.

To keep the room tidy, the refrigerator was moved to an adjoining (and spacious) hallway, which also houses the walk-in pantry. Morby can now bring groceries through her front door and drop it off in this “Pantry Hall” without messing up the kitchen. Additionally, what looks like a bookcase in the hallway is actually a Murphy door that swings open to reveal the hidden powder room.

The kitchen is not huge, but it is supposed to be teeming with food and guests. A small sewing table and built-in banquet seat provide just enough space for someone to sit and help prepare dinner – or just keep Morby company while she does something wonderful – but more are always happier. “She always has friends and cooks,” says Kloythanomsup. “She loves to have an artist salon.”

	Haris Kenjar

For the walls, the designer chose a classic red brick, but since it was only for the look, it went wrong. “It’s like a thin brick tile,” she explains.

Gradient will replace traditional window AC with a more efficient, space-saving and better designed solution that uses advanced heat pump technology and a climate-friendly refrigerant to keep houses cool.

Air conditioning is essential for quality of life and work productivity, but the basic design of window air conditioners has not changed in 50 years. Too often, the same air conditioning system that makes life bearable in hot weather also contributes to exacerbating climate change; Heating and cooling systems are responsible for 20% of global CO2 emissions.

“Gradient’s mission is to cool the world by making every home more comfortable and healthier for the people who live in it – without harming the environment. We believe we can build a better air conditioning solution for the home while fighting climate change, ”said Vince Romanin, CEO of Gradient. “Air conditioning is one of the most important things to add to comfort and productivity in a warming world, but too many people struggle with antiquated window AC units that are clunky, noisy, heavy and inefficient. Gradient offers a beautiful, intuitive design, a more efficient, leaner, quieter air conditioning system and climate-friendly refrigerants. Building a better air conditioner is one of the most effective ways to help people feel comfortable at home while reducing CO2 emissions from HVAC systems. ”

The Gradient is designed to be easy to install and not block the view like a traditional window AC unit. It offers the benefits of a professional heat pump system at a fraction of the cost. It can cool and heat all year round and is easy to use via a mobile app.

Gradient was founded in 2017 and has raised over $ 13 million in venture funding. Investors include Ajax Strategies, At One Ventures, Prime Coalition, Incite Ventures, Autodesk Foundation, Urban us, Magic Hour and Leading Silicon Valley Angels. The company has also received over $ 9 million in government grants from the US Department of Energy, the California Energy Commission, and the California Strategic Growth Council.

“Home air conditioning is an underrated aspect of the general discussion about climate change, and we see a great opportunity for Gradient to disrupt the HVAC space at home by developing a much improved, climate-friendly replacement for the traditional AC window unit,” said Milo Werner, Partnership with Ajax strategies. “Millions of Americans need air conditioning, but their options are limited to outdated window and floor units that block their view, make a lot of noise, and contribute to climate change. Current technology has not improved in decades. ” As more people work from home, consumer interest in a high quality home air conditioner that really works increases. Gradient has a great product and an excellent team that are creatively thinking of meeting the needs of this market with a beautiful, intuitive, consumer-centric solution. ”

One of the few octagonal houses in San Francisco, a short fad spurred on by phrenology enthusiasts, hits the market.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Feusier Octagon House at 1067 Green St. in Russian Hill is listed for $ 8.6 million. As recently as 2018, it was being offered for a cool $ 10,500 per month.

The Feusier Octagon House has an unusual reason for its shape: the phrenology. When it was built in the late 1850s, phrenologist Orson Squire Fowler’s book on octagonal houses took over the nation. Fowler argued that eight-sided houses were better for wellbeing, in part because it meant that every room in the house would get sunlight at some point during the day.

Louis Feusier and his wife Louise Guerne (the daughter of the man Guerneville was named after) were the most famous residents of the house. Feusier was a prominent businessman who allegedly ran in the same circles as Leland Stanford and Mark Twain. There are only three octagonal houses in the Bay Area – the others are in Lands End and Gough Street – and only about a hundred in the country.

The Feusier Octagon House is also one of San Francisco’s oldest homes. Before the city was filled with towers and skyscrapers, it was one of the most notable landmarks on the skyline and must have offered incredible views from its many windows. Several outbuildings were blown up as firebreaks during the fiery aftermath of the 1906 earthquake, but the house was saved.

The home has four bedrooms, a formal dining room, 14 foot ceilings, and an outdoor deck and garden.

It was last sold to the Billman family in 1998 for $ 2.8 million and unsuccessfully listed for $ 5.2 million in 2012. After several years of falling prices, it was offered for rent. Attorney Sheila Billman Nahi, who shares the house with her siblings, told the Wall Street Journal, “Now is the time to pass the torch on to a new family.”

Sotheby’s International Realty in San Francisco will conduct the listing.

The magnificent Feusier Octagon House in San Francisco is for sale for $ 8.6 million. Its curious shape was described by a popular 1850s book, “A Home for All; or the Gravel Wall and Octagonal Construction,” by Orson Squire Fowler, a phrenologist who, according to SFGATE, argued that they were eight-sided houses for Better For the well-being, in part because it would get sunlight once per day in every room in the house. “Phrenology is the silly pseudoscience in which the size, shape, and texture of the skull supposedly indicate mental characteristics. From the SF-Gate:

Feusier was a well-known businessman who allegedly ran in the same circles as Leland Stanford and Mark Twain. There are only three octagonal houses in the Bay Area – the others are in Lands End and Gough Street – and only about a hundred in the country.

The Feusier Octagon House is also one of the oldest homes in San Francisco. Before the city was filled with towers and skyscrapers, it was one of the most notable landmarks on the skyline and must have offered incredible views from its many windows. During the fiery aftermath of the 1906 earthquake, several outbuildings were blown up as fire breaks, but the house was saved.
