While working as a corporate attorney in San Francisco, Clara Jung had an epiphany: She much preferred decorating her law school apartment to actually putting her law degree to use. “I decided that life was too long to continue that career,” says Jung, who subsequently quit, took a year to figure things out, and ultimately founded a design firm, Banner Day Interiors. In the early days, it was her clients who kept her going: “There is so much talent out there, and it always thrills me that people really want to work with us,” she admits. “Sometimes I second-guessed my life change—I used to wear suits every day and appear before judges. It was a strong change when I was assembling furniture on my own for an installation. Yet in some ways, I’m glad I had to hustle and work so hard. I never take anything for granted, and that drive still sustains me today.”

While Jung considers herself “a fairly risk-averse person—hence the detour into law,” she swiftly blossomed into a fearless designer once planted in the right field. “We love incorporating pops of color and whimsical elements, and there is a brightness to our work which I openly embrace,” she says of the work her team is doing at Banner Day Interiors. “We do take some “risks,” especially with color and wallpaper. But is it really a risk when those unexpected elements bring you so much joy? I would prefer to swing for the fences instead of staying in the safe zone where no emotion is evoked.”

Get to know Clara Jung:

tell us…

What or who has made the biggest impact on your career so far?

The clients from my first year of business. They referred me repeatedly to both their professional and personal networks. Having clients who trusted us early on in my career enabled us to flex our design muscles and design philosophy in a variety of different homes and spaces.

What sets your work apart?

We love incorporating pops of colour, whimsical elements and a dose of the traditional. We do take some “risks” especially with color and wallpaper. But is it really a risk when those unexpected elements bring you so much joy? I would prefer to swing for the fences instead of staying in the safe zone where no emotion is evoked.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

The dream is free, but the hustle is sold separately. It’s so true. Unless you’ve undergone a large renovation of your home or worked in interior design, most people can’t fathom how many decisions go into a large project. Often interior designers are an integral part of this process.

In the early years of my career, I worked extremely hard and often for almost no pay to build up my portfolio. I remember carrying a 100-pound kitchen island up four flights of stairs alone since I had no team or handyman to help me. I almost died. No hyperbole.

How do you want your clients to feel in their space?

I’m a strong believer that beautiful and inviting spaces should be livable for all kinds of families and our work really illustrates that philosophy. At the end of the day, we help our clients attain their ideal living environments with an overlay of the Banner Day aesthetic. It gives me joy to see our clients’ personalities evidenced in our portfolio.

Your design crush?

Beata Heuman. I’ve followed for a while and love her blend of old, new and the ever so well-placed dose of whimsy.

What’s your favorite room, anywhere, of all time, and why?

Kids’ rooms by a large margin. You’re not only allowed but encouraged to make them playful and add color.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Travel has always been a great source of design inspiration. But even the varying textures of a flower arrangement or a special color combination in a textile have a way of inspiring me.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?

I was in the Peace Corps after college in Nepal!

What’s the first thing someone should do when they move into a new space?

Observe how the natural light moves through the spaces through the day. This will inform paint color selection, furniture placement, etc.

What’s overrated in decorating?

Symmetry and perfection! Some of my clients absolutely can’t stand if there isn’t absolute symmetry in a room, tile pattern, etc. I say embrace the asymmetry, there is also beauty in that.

What do you think will be the defining design trend of 2022?

More maximalism and fun. I believe it’s an outgrowth of the uncertainty that we’ve been experiencing the past couple of years. There’s a yearning to finding a level of comfort, coziness and finding joy in the homes we’ve spent so much time in.

What’s your favorite and why?

Things to collect:

Vintage cookbooks

Paint color:

Golden Hour by Clare Paints

The celebrated fashion designer Patrick Kelly (1954–1990) was only 35 years old when he succumbed to AIDS, and yet his work today often appears as lively and boundless as it was when he was alive more than two decades ago. His enduring message of love – one that boldly reaffirmed the empowerment of blacks and fearlessly pushed the boundaries of fashion – is evident in the Patrick Kelly: Runway of Love exhibition, which runs from October 23, 2021 to 24 de Jung.

Lauren L. Camerlengo

“I want my clothes to make you smile,” said Kelly, who was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi and despite the many challenges he faced as a black gay adolescent, most of all from his mother and father, after that of his father Grandmother was raised, an optimistic, creative vision developed. In 1969, Kelly died. Kelly briefly attended Jackson State University in Mississippi before moving to Atlanta and then New York. With an anonymous ticket in hand, he arrived in Paris at the age of 25.

He worked as a freelance designer in the City of Lights for several years before founding the company and the fashion line Patrick Kelly Paris in 1985 with his business and life partner Bjorn Guil Amelan. Together they conquer the world with clothing that not only became internationally known, but was also representative of his personal expression, which fearlessly dealt with blackness, systemic racism and the queer experience.

Members of our San Francisco Bay Times team have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Runway of Love, announced during the shutdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that the museum is open and waiver is mandatory, the exhibition will bring Kelly’s captivating work to the West Coast public. It will highlight nearly 80 of its memorable designs.

“The de Young Museum has always been dedicated to showcasing the best fashion designers in the world, and we are delighted to present Patrick Kelly: Runway of Love to our audience,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of Fine Arts Museums from San Francisco. “Kelly was a pioneering artist who created an extraordinary variety of designs in her lifetime. Everyone should know the name Patrick Kelly and we hope this exhibition does just that. “

Despite the fact that black fashion designers have continually crossed the barriers of the industry, Kelly was a true pioneer. His bold and luminous creations stood out on the streets, in nightclubs, and especially on the catwalk. This extraordinary vision led Kelly to be the first American and first black designer to be elected to the Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode, a renowned French association for clothing designers. Perhaps more notably, Kelly received such awards while being and remaining one of the few designers who directly addressed racial issues in his work.

The exhibition places Kelly and his designs in the broader context of art and fashion history by looking closely at his inspirations. Its influences are examined in seven different sections, including his black legacy, memories of his childhood in the south, experiences in the club and gay cultural scene in New York and Paris, and his muses from art, fashion and black history.

We recently learned more about Kelly and Runway of Love thanks to Laura L. Camerlengo, Associate Curator of Costume and Textile Arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and Presenting Curator of the exhibition.

San Francisco Bay Times: It’s remarkable how Patrick Kelly was self-taught and had a vision of what he wanted to do so early on. Who were his main mentors during his childhood and formative years, and how did they influence him?

Laura L. Camerlengo: Patrick Kelly was born and raised in Vicksburg, Mississippi, by strong women. His mother taught him to draw and an aunt taught him to sew. In several interviews he recognized his grandmother as the “backbone” of his aesthetic. Another source of inspiration were the styles worn by members of his parish; he often said, “The Black Baptist Church on Sundays, the ladies are just as wild as the ladies at Yves Saint Laurent’s haute couture shows.”

San Francisco Bay Times: Vintage clothing stores were particularly popular in the 1970s. Kelly showed great initiative when he opened his own store in Atlanta. Do you know how long he owned the shop and which vintage fashions appealed to him the most at the time?

Laura L. Camerlengo: The curator of the exhibition, Dilys Blum, sheds light on Patrick Kelly’s time in Atlanta in her catalog essay. Kelly opened a small store called Moth Ball Matinee in 1974 shortly after moving to Atlanta. There he sold antique and used clothing as well as converted clothing and his own designs.

San Francisco Bay Times: Has he ever spoken or written about any problems he likely had while growing up as a gay, black teenager and young man in Mississippi? If so, are there specific stories you could share?

Laura L. Camerlengo: Yes, Patrick Kelly has experienced racism all his life and shared his experiences with racism. His former business and life partner Bjorn Amelan continued to tell these stories after Kelly’s death. Patrick Kelly’s children’s books, for example, were lore from white schools filled with racist notes for future readers. Kelly had to flip through pictures of Blackface to study – a painful memory that has stayed with him all his life.

San Francisco Bay Times: Has anyone ever found out who gave him (anonymously) his first one-way ticket to Paris in 1979?

Laura L. Camerlengo: Yes, it was the supermodel and superstar Pat Cleveland who bought him his one-way ticket to Paris in 1979. She met with Patrick Kelly in New York and saw that he was struggling to get there as a designer. In an interview that we shared in the exhibition catalog, she recalls: “People helped me, I thought – that’s why I gave him the ticket – so why not help each other to make our dreams come true? We only need one person to believe in us, and Patrick kept that dream alive for many more years. “

San Francisco Bay Times: Bjorn Amelan is a remarkable figure himself. How did he and Kelly meet?

Laura L. Camerlengo: Bjorn Amelan and Patrick Kelly met in 1982. At that time, Amelan was a photographer agent for luminaries such as Horst P. Horst and William Klein. They met in designer Willi Smith’s showroom in New York City. Kelly and Amelan got together again in Paris in 1983 and became business and life partners afterwards.

San Francisco Bay Times: How did Kelly first come into contact with Gloria Steinem? She seemed to play an important role in building his international career.

Laura L. Camerlengo: As Dilys Blum indicates in our catalog, Patrick Kelly was introduced to Gloria Steinem by New York television producer Carla Morgenstern. Kelly had a connection to Morgenstern through Ellie Wolfe, whom he met while residing in Atlanta from 1974 to 1978. Steinem also interviewed Patrick Kelly on the Today show.

Even more poignant, Gloria Steinem gave a beautiful eulogy in honor of Patrick Kelly during his funeral service at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in 1990. She said, “He was an outsider who brought the outside with him and then the outside eliminated outside / inside division for everyone. He united us with buttons and bows, tassels and fringes instead of dividing us with gold and jewels. In his presence the ‘not powerful enough’ felt hope and the ‘too powerful’ humanity. “

San Francisco Bay Times: What are some of your own favorite pieces in Patrick Kelly: Runway of Love? Please do let us know why you are getting these pieces or why they appear noteworthy in some other way.

Laura L. Camerlengo: It’s hard to pick a favorite design – a bit like asking me to pick a favorite kid! But my dear, late friend and colleague Monica Brown – who initiated this exhibition – was a huge fan of Patrick Kelly’s wool suits, which feel both professional and whimsical. In her honor I will name these as my “favorites”.

San Francisco Bay Times: How many pieces / ensembles are new to the exhibition that are from FAMSF? Have these items been exhibited before? And please describe some of these items of clothing.

Laura L. Camerlengo: The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco was honored to receive several designs by Patrick Kelly from two former Kelly colleagues: Elizabeth “Ms. Liz “Goodrum, Kelly’s longtime assistant; and Audrey Smaltz, a famous catwalk show producer who also coordinated Kelly’s spirited catwalk shows. Among the items of clothing that can be seen in our exhibition are a gray and black striped jailhouse skirt-themed knit dress donated by Goodrum and a chewing gum-pink quilted coat with small pictures of the American-born black entertainer and activist Josephine Baker is printed on. donated by Smaltz. Several pieces of jewelry donated by Goodrum will also highlight many of the ensembles that the Philadelphia Museum of Art has made available to us.

San Francisco Bay Times; What do you think is Kelly’s enduring legacy for the fashion and art world? Like Keith Haring, he seemed to be as much time man as he was, but also unique and timeless.

Laura L. Camerlengo: Patrick Kelly’s style signatures – like his use of tubular knit to create body-conscious styles – have become part of the fashion lexicon. Since his death, the designer himself has served as a symbol of hope and a rallying call for other black fashion professionals, as most recently with The Kelly Initiative. (https://thekellyinitiative.net/)

San Francisco Bay Times: It’s moving that the controversial Golliwog image he used in his work – taking control of this derogatory symbol – is on his tombstone along with an image of a heart. Was that his decision? Or maybe Amelans?

Laura L. Camerlengo: Yes, Bjorn Amelan was inspired by the signatures of Patrick Kelly Paris for the tombstone images, including the house’s Golliwog logo and the heart button. But it is the epitaph that perhaps best embodies the designer and his legacy: “Nothing Is Impossible”.

San Francisco Bay Times: Please mention anything else you would like to tell our readers.

Laura L. Camerlengo: The presentation of Patrick Kelly: Runway of Love in our museums marks the first time Patrick Kelly’s work has been presented by a West Coast museum. We were supported in this endeavor by many of Patrick Kelly’s friends, colleagues, and co-workers; aspiring scientists, such as our consulting scientist, Dr. Sequoia Barnes, and Established Academics; and various members of the Bay Area community. We are excited to share Patrick Kelly’s important contributions to fashion and his enduring legacy with our audience.

For all its beauty, it’s no secret that the interior design industry is walking with a lavish shadow. Damaged orders, incorrectly measured products – even furniture that has been little used – quickly pile up in the landfill. After 20 years in the home industry, the San Francisco-based designer works Carolyn Rebuffel grappled with this reality, wondering how she could turn her concerns into a proactive resolution.

Carolyn RebuffelCourtesy Make It Home

The answer came when she saw how their passions could intertwine. As a longtime philanthropist, Rebuffel has focused her volunteering work on the care system in Northern California. There she discovered the overwhelming statistics of homelessness among the elderly (around 50 percent of newly emancipated people in California spend their first year without a home) and saw a clear demand for homes among these young adults and families. But last year, after Rebuffel joined the Good Future Design Alliance, a local organization trying to change the course of waste production in the furniture industry, her plan took shape. “As a designer, there is so much waste in this business, it’s crazy,” she tells Business of Home. “So it made a lot of sense to put those two things together.”

On October 1, Rebuffel launched Make It Home, a nonprofit that places donated housewares in the homes of families and individuals emerging from homelessness. Organization is not a completely new concept; Rebuffel was inspired by similar nonprofits in the United States, such as Humble Design in the Detroit area and Grateful Gatherings in the Bay Area. “All of these people support people who are either moving out of the crisis, out of homelessness or out of emancipation into permanent residence and who set it up for them,” she explains. By modeling Make It Home after these nonprofits, the designer launched a version within her own community that brings the benefits of design to those who might otherwise not have access.

Since the start, Rebuffel has installed furniture in seven houses, with five to six other projects on deck before the end of the year. She works mostly alone or with small volunteer support staff, outfitting homes with basic furniture, from beds and tables to lamps and eating utensils – all for an estimated $ 1,500 per home, half of which is for moving expenses. “It’s one thing to live out of a trash bag on an air mattress,” she says. “But having a dresser to put away your belongings and dishes – that’s the kind of thing that will keep these people from becoming homeless again.”

There is evidence of it. According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, up to 50 percent of families return homelessness within a year of securing housing. However, according to the Pontiac, Michigan-based nonprofit Humble Design, fewer than 1 percent of families have worked with homelessness after receiving donated design benefits. In other words, surrounding people in need with the elements of home is more than a heartwarming idea. There is evidence that this can have a significant and noticeable impact on their long-term quality of life.

Two children react to the unveiling of a Make It Home residenceCourtesy of Grateful Gatherings

When Rebuffel spoke to Business of Home, she had just finished her first apartment for a newly emancipated foster child. She had worked with another volunteer all day packing the furniture for the apartment before the moving companies arrived to move the parts. Then she worked with the new resident, putting art on the walls, making the bed, and unpacking pots and pans in the kitchen area. “He was so happy – it couldn’t have been better,” she says.

To source furniture, Rebuffel has partnered with the Bay Area Furniture Bank in Santa Clara, a donation center that collects pieces from households, hotels, and universities and stores them in a storage room donated by Google. The collaboration also allows contributions to be counted as tax-deductible donations through the Bay Area Furniture Bank, with the goal that furniture can be donated directly to Make It Home. Word gets around quickly and because of her network, Rebuffel now has more furniture than she can place. But she’s working to change that.

“[Because] There’s so much more need of COVID – it’s horrible now, ”she says. “It’s time to give something back.” And although she has had her most profitable year as a designer, she takes a full year off from her design practice to focus her full attention on the growth of Make It Home. “70 children in San Francisco will need help in June – that’s why I need storage space, that’s why I have to speak up and organize things,” says Rebuffel. “Being at home when something is messed up takes you one step down. I’m not doing an HGTV reveal, but when that stuff is really pretty and put away it’s easy to get to the next level – it’s the same path for those people who have been homeless or lost everything in a fire or from domestic violence ran away. And I know that I can make a difference. “

From her headquarters on Potrero Hill, Jessica McClintock ran a clothing empire that at its peak ran dozens of stores across the country, supplying women with dresses, handbags, watches, glasses and a perfume reminiscent of Jasmine.

The influential designer died in her sleep on February 16, in the middle of what her website called the Month of Romance, “when most weddings are planned.” McClintock was 90 years old.

McClintock sold fantasy as well as plaster. Her silky, silky creations cost three figures, not four or five. In later years they were sold at Marshall’s, not Saks, and Nordstrom Rack, not Nordstrom. But at the height of her empire, in the 1970s and 1980s, she adorned dozens of women in calico, jute, and lace for proms, graduations, and the wedding altar.

One of them was Hillary Rodham, who wore a ruffled long sleeve McClintock dress when she married her law school sweetheart, Bill Clinton, in 1975.

The Jessica McClintock look was called the Prairie Girl aesthetic and was very, very tall until it wasn’t like that in any way.

Her success was a mixture of inspiration and an almost burdensome work ethic.

“Time is everything,” she liked to say. “The competition is tough. Decisions have to be made quickly. “

McClintock was born Jessica Gagnon on June 19, 1930. Gagnon, the daughter of a shoe retailer and beautician, was from Presque Isle, Maine. She learned tailoring from her grandmother and never officially studied design. She graduated from San Jose State University and taught young students at Nimitz Elementary School in Sunnyvale in the 1960s. Her first husband, Al Staples, died in 1963. She and her second husband, Fred McClintock, a commercial airline pilot whom she once referred to as “the love of my life,” were divorced in 1967.

Jessica McClintock’s reinvention as Style Maven began a few years later. She remembered selling barefoot dresses in Berkeley in 1969. A year later, she invested $ 5,000 in a friend’s clothes store in San Francisco called Gunne Sax, and in a few years her fashion was being sold worldwide. She opened her first store in San Francisco in 1981. Your empire is said to have annual sales of $ 100 million.

Not only did McClintock work long hours, he asked her colleagues to do the same. Her half-brother and vice president of the company, Jack Herich, thought moving to California in the 1960s to work for McClintock would lead to an easy life.

“I thought I was going to be a beach goer,” he said in 2011. “I’ve been to the beach once every 40 years.”

McClintock’s half-century career was not without controversy. Two decades ago, a clothing store in the Mission District that was sewing their clothes was found to be in breach of labor standards and liable for unpaid wages. She and others paid $ 120,000 to settle the case.

After their stores closed, McClintock’s fashion and other products were licensed and continued to be sold in non-valet stores. She was still at work in her eighties overseeing licensing deals and marketing strategies. A Chronicle reporter asked her in 2011 if it was okay to sell mid-thigh strapless dresses to young girls.

“Are you kidding?” McClintock said. “With everything in the world today? Everything is so seductive! Sure, I’ll keep the clothes short. But the girls can wear leggings. “

On the McClintock corporate website, which it survives, the domain was described as “an enchanted lifestyle brand … always in touch with the desires of young women”.

In 2018, McClintock and her son established the Scott and Jessica McClintock Foundation to support environmental efforts, particularly those related to elephants, rhinos and mountain lions.

She is survived by her son Scott. A memorial service will be held in San Francisco at a later date.
