Sun-soaked San Diego is home to the least affordable metro housing market in America.

The city surpassed its northern California neighbor, the notoriously pricey San Francisco, earlier this year, according to a report by real-estate analytics company OJO Labs.

“Pricing is out of control,” Kathy McSherry, a Compass real estate agent in San Diego, told The Post Saturday, a day after she sold a 1,400-square-foot home for $1 million, a property originally listed at $900,000. She currently has a $1.65 million offer pending on a $1.4 million listing for a 1,500-square-foot property.

“We’re getting multiple offers on everything,” McSherry said, including more than 20 bids on a one-bedroom condo in central San Diego.

OJO’s affordability metric compares median home prices to local incomes. The median home sold price in San Diego climbed 14.3 percent in January, to $764,000, bringing the city’s “unaffordability” score to 8.1 — the ratio of home-sold price to median household income, OJO reports.

Average home prices are still higher in San Francisco, but due to median household incomes, San Diego is considered less affordable. georgeclerk

Median home prices remain higher in San Francisco than San Diego, but homes there are considered more affordable because of higher average incomes.

Home prices declined 4.2% in San Francisco over the past year, the steepest drop of any of the 50 metro markets measured by OJO Labs. The only other area in the red was Fort Myers, Fla.where home prices declined 0.2%.

Gasper and his wife Minnie Pulizzi are walking from San Diego to San Francisco to combat the sky-high gas prices.

That trek is roughly 500 miles.

Eyewitness News caught up with the couple, who are in their 80s, for a recent report on the rising gas prices.

Gasper says he can remember when gas was 25 cents a gallon in 1959.

The last time someone made such a journey was last April, when a man in a bear suit trekked from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

The man who went by Bearsun started his journey from Little Tokyo in LA County in his attempt to reach viral fame. A deputy stopped him along the way and gave him the all-clear to continue safely.

This was a bear-y unique situation. You may have seen a large teddy bear walking through town. One of our deputies got to meet the individual inside the bear & learned his goal is to complete a walk from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
The Pulizzis will likely walk a full 100 miles more than Bearsun did in his journey. The couple is 50 years old.

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco Giants first base coach Antoine Richardson and San Diego Padres third base coach Mike Scheldt hugged the field before their game Wednesday, a day after Richardson was fired following an incident he said included Scheldt’s suspension of “racist undertones.”

Richardson said Shieldt used an expletive and told Giants manager Gabby Kapler to take control of Richardson on Tuesday night. At the time, Richardson said he interpreted Scheldt’s comment “as if I were to be under the control or piece of property or enslaved.”

On Wednesday, the two men chatted in the square and shook hands before addressing the media about the exchange. They hug after talking to reporters.

“I don’t think he’s a racist,” said Richardson, who is black. “I think, however, for the point, that he recognizes that some of his words, ours, are powerful and moving. And we just want to spread awareness of a situation that I think is important to our community.”

Scheldt, who is white, admitted he used inappropriate language and said he appreciated Richardson saying he was not racist.

“I am grateful to Antoine for making that clear,” Scheldt said. “He’s obviously misinterpreted, and I think he knows it, my value as a human being is to love people. That’s exactly what I stand for. So I appreciate him explaining that to myself and my family.”

He said, “I don’t know Antoine’s heritage. I can’t walk in his shoes. I can only have sympathy and love, which I have, and always have in my life.”

Padres’ third base coach Mike Scheldt, right, speaks at a news conference next to Giants first base coach Antoine Richardson on Wednesday. Photo by Associated Press/Jeff Chiu

Richardson told reporters Tuesday night that his expulsion stemmed from an incident that began when Scheldt approached his San Francisco hideout.

Richardson said he asked Scheldt what he needed. The Giants coach said that Scheldt used an expletive and told Kapler to “control” Richardson. “At the time, I went up a notch and said, ‘Excuse me, I didn’t believe what I heard’ and he was sent off, after Tuesday’s game,” Richardson said after Tuesday’s game.

Scheldt said on Wednesday that Padres’ players and coaches had upset the Giants team. Stephen Duggar He stole second base in the second half with San Francisco leading 10-1. When Schilt went for third base training at the top of the third, he and Richardson exchanged words.

“There are some feelings running through. We looked at each other and then I looked into the bunker to find a couple who don’t really need to reveal their names, but guys I’ve had relationships with since they were younger or I am,” said Scheldt.

“I was looking for some support to try and defuse the situation. I couldn’t find her and then we exchanged words. I won’t touch who started it. We’re past that point… and I could have handled it differently with my words.”

Schilt said he believes something positive will come from the controversy.

“The truth is, we’ve approached this difficult solution publicly as men, with a solution in our hearts without any animosity. And I think it’s a great example of how people connect together regardless of backgrounds, colors or situations,” he said.

After Richardson was sent off, Giants assistant coach Alyssa Naken took his place at first base. Nakin made history as the first woman to coach on the field in a MLB season game.

The Giants won 13-2.

The median home selling price in San Diego rose 14.3% in January 2022 to $764,000, bringing the city’s pricelessness index — a ratio of home selling price to median household income — to 8.1, according to OJO Labs.

Though San Francisco still has the most expensive housing stock of any subway in the U.S., a 4.2% annualized decline in home selling prices in January put San Francisco’s unaffordable value for the first time since OJO Labs began recording the data pushed below 8 in July 2021, according to Patrick Kearns, director of storytelling at OJO Labs. In January 2022, San Francisco’s unaffordability score fell to 7.9 from 9.2 last month.

Other least affordable subways are Los Angeles; Handy, AL; Pensacola, FL; and Boise, ID round out the top five. According to data from OJO Labs real estate search site Movoto by OJO, Austin, TX saw the largest increase in home prices of any metro area in the United States, with home prices rising 35.5% year over year.

On the other hand, Green Bay-Appleton, WI, in terms of homes sold, continued to be the cheapest of the nation’s top 50 metro areas. The median price for a home sold in Green Bay-Appleton was $149,900, an increase of 11.9% over the previous year as of Jan.

Before Diego Rivera was Mr. Frida Khalo, Frida Khalo was Mrs. Diego Rivera. During their tumultuous relationship, Rivera was one of the most famous artists in the world. It would be nearly half a century after her death in 1954 for Khalo to be similarly exalted, and her fame now far surpassed his.

A breathtaking memento of Rivera’s talent can be seen at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in the summer of 2023. The marriage of northern and southern artistic expression on the continent, better known as the Pan American Unity Mural, is on loan from the City College of San Francisco while its permanent home at the CCSF is being renovated.

Created for the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition, the mural is a living, 10-part “portable” fresco depicting a past, present, and future that the artist believed shared across North America. Completed with the assistance of local artists and assistants, using scenes from the Bay Area as a backdrop, the mural celebrates the creative spirit through portraits of artists – including Kahlo – craftsmen, architects, and inventors who use art and technology as tools to shape society.

As amazing as the mural is – 22 feet high by 74 feet wide and made up of ten frescoed panels – the move of the artwork from CCSF to SFMOMA was almost as impressive.

abstract

Atthowe Fine Art Services workers remove Pan American Unity’s central lower panel from the wall … [+] at the Diego Rivera Theater of the City College of San Francisco.

Image: Katherine Du Tiel / SFMOMA.

This exhibition is the culmination of four years of extensive research, research and preparation that brought the two institutions together as well as scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), an international team of restorers, Diego Rivera fellows and Atthowe Fine Art Services, a local Expert in art removals and rigging. These teams examined the technical, conservation and scientific requirements to move such a monumental and fragile work of art.

“Removing the first large board from the CCSF cinema wall was the most frightening thing for me,” Michelle Barger, SFMOMA’s director of conservation, told Forbes.com. “The fragile fresco, which measures just under 5 square feet and is only 1¼ inches thick, had to be cut from a 12-foot thick concrete wall and carefully removed from an impossibly tight fit with no room for error.”

The extraction of the first plaque by Atthowe Fine Art Services and Sheedy Drayage began in April 2021 and the first plaque arrived at the museum on May 2nd.

“All of this happened while the panel was suspended blindly from ropes threaded through the roof of the building and held outside by a huge crane,” added Barger.

Weighing in at over 60,000 pounds and covering nearly 1,800 square feet, the mural had been embedded in the Diego Rivera Theater at the CCSF since 1961. The masterpiece was stored 20 years earlier.

Truckin ‘

A large blackboard on Howard Street outside SFMOMA is waiting to be craned over the power cables … [+] and rolled into the museum.

Image: Katherine Du Tiel / SFMOMA.

One obstacle overcome – the safe removal of the plates from the CCSF – the next challenge was to get the huge plates to the SFMOMA, eleven kilometers away. Tractors with flatbed trailers were the answer.

Prior to shipment, two full-size replica panels were constructed and subjected to vibration and torque tests in a laboratory to create a database of stress effects on the mural. Using this data, the researchers created a system of sensors attached to the surface of the mural that enabled the UNAM team to monitor the panels in real time from the truck cab as it was being dismantled and moving through San Francisco make sure they were exposed to as little stress as possible.

The drives started at 4:00 a.m. on Sunday morning to minimize traffic.

“SFMOMA employees followed a route dictated by the city of San Francisco in their cars,” said Barger. “Due to the oversized height of the panels and the extremely low loading area – it was less than 30 cm above the ground – we had to avoid hills, MUNI bus routes and underpasses because we couldn’t clear them. Not an easy job in San Francisco! The drive usually takes less than 20 minutes by car, but it took up to two hours because we had to stay below five miles an hour to prevent vibrations from building up and causing damage. “

Tight pressure

Few buildings in the world are spacious enough to house the presentation of the works of art. The street level Roberts Family Gallery at SFMOMA, where the mural can be seen, was purposely designed to show large-format installations of contemporary art. Pan American Unity fits perfectly.

“It’s just tall and wide enough to safely install and display this massive work of art,” said Barger. “You have to have a few meters of free space for the portal system (hoist), and we only have centimeters free. Likewise, the largest wall panels simply fit into the posts (dividers) of a removed glass window. “

In the gallery, the wall panels are attached to a steel structure that offers both stability and a versatile fastening system so that Pan American Unity can be safely moved and displayed again in the future. This system is replicated when the mural is returned to the CCSF’s new Performing Arts Center.

Pan American unity

A large upper panel and a small lower panel await installation in the Roberts Family Gallery at … [+] SFMOMA.

Image: Katherine Du Tiel / SFMOMA.

“For years I have had the feeling that the true art of America must arise from the fusion of machinism and the new creative power of the north with the tradition rooted in the soil of the south, the Toltecs, Tarascans, Mayas, Incas, etc., and would like to choose that as the theme for my mural. ”Diego Rivera described his vision for the project in April 1940.

Pan American Unity offers an expansive panorama of the Bay Area that combines idealized scenes of cities before the conquest of the Valley of Mexico City (left) with depictions of the development of Northern California (right). Rivera’s imagery ranges from ancient civilizations to Bay Area architectural icons, including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.

At the center of the mural is a towering figure that combines a sculpture of the Aztec earth goddess Coatlicue with modern machines. Around him he depicts many notable contemporary and historical figures from all over the continent: inventors and their inventions (the ruler of Texcoco Nezahualcoyotl from the 15th, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler), artists, architects and actors.

Producing this amazing level of detail in this format remains an enormous achievement.

“With fresco painting, the clock resets itself every day and you have to finish your composition while the plaster is still wet,” explains Barger. “The ambitious scale of this mural and the limited timeframe of the summer exhibition meant Rivera had to work fast and cover large areas every day, often over four feet wide. I am overwhelmed by the complexity of his multi-layered narratives and his masterful brushwork, all of which were achieved under these very restrictive conditions. “

Rivera also included current events in the composition.

In a lower panel, he refers to scenes from Hollywood films such as The Great Dictator, Confessions of a Nazi Spy and All Quiet on the Western Front to draw attention to the growing threat posed by fascism and the United States to join World War II to encourage.

With so much eye candy, every guest is attracted to something different.

“I keep coming back to Rivera’s masterful portrayal of a woman diver soaring high above San Francisco Bay,” said Barger. “Subtle shades characterize the otherwise raw plaster of your white swimsuit.”

The ailing San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) is considering selling its iconic Diego Rivera mural The Making of a Fresco Showing the Building of a City from 1931 to complement its foundation, which reportedly came in at just $ 10 million in June . Allegedly, Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas is said to have expressed interest in the $ 50 million mural that is said to have work for his Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which is currently under construction in Los Angeles.

The SFAI, one of the oldest and most prestigious art schools in the country, has had difficulty staying open home and laying off faculty and staff since March. The school reversed an announced closure decision in July but has yet to find a way to pay off the debt while raising approximately $ 19 million in operating costs.

The site-specific Rivera tableau, which shows workers on a trompe l’oeil scaffolding, which shows a fresco depicting a city under construction, is only one of three in the city by the renowned Mexican muralist. The plant is located on the school’s campus on Chestnut Street, which was acquired by the University of California’s Board of Regents when it bought nearly $ 20 million of SFAI debt last fall to help keep the school from collapsing maintain. Should the SFAI fail to pay this debt by 2026, the campus and mural will become the property of the University of California after the lease expires.

The mural could be saved on-site through a foundation that SFAI is alleged to be actively seeking, or through a plan that has the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art buy the work and leave it on campus.
