A recent Monday, 2:05 pm: Tim Armstrong always thought of himself as an artist. He sacrificed the middle-class lifestyle his parents gave him as a child to follow his creative dreams.

“I came out to pursue the neo-beat culture in San Francisco, the ’90s version, which was to be romantic, pursue your art and live in North Beach,” Armstrong said. “I think of myself as a (Lawrence) Ferlinghetti. Look at this beard.”

He signed up for classes at the San Francisco Art Institute, but gave up one semester short of graduation. His professors wanted to groom artists fit for galleries, and Armstrong was into large-scale, temporary art made from flour that lasted only as long as the rain held off and hungry birds stayed away.

He found a small apartment in North Beach for $200 a month and soon landed work at the San Remo Hotel on Mason Street as a handyman. It didn’t pay a lot, but it gave him the flexibility to pursue his art.

Seventeen years later, the 53-year-old Armstrong has become an integral part of the quirky hotel on the edge of North Beach, which was built in 1906 to house refugees from the great earthquake and fire.

“He knows where all the bodies are buried, he’s been around so long,” said Tom Field, who has owned the San Remo with his brother Robert since 1972. “He is our curator, handyman and decorator. He does all kinds of things that I’m not even aware of.”

Wearing suspenders and signature green Carhartt work pants, Armstrong scurries about the 65-room hotel with “bathrooms down the hall,” looking for the next problem to fix.

“Sometime people vomit in the sink and toilets overflow. I have to deal with it,” Armstrong said. A more pleasant duty is maintaining the Field Brothers’ collection of a dozen-plus antique cars, one of which he drives to the front of the building every day — eye candy to attract customers.

It’s all part of a job that allows the bohemian lifestyle he relishes. Ironically, he doesn’t have much time now to create art, but he still has that mind-set.

As he organized 100-years worth of junk in the hotel’s storage areas, he came across all manner of old photographs and interesting objects. Now, one wing at the San Remo is devoted to antique baby photographs he found and framed. Another is lined with rock posters from the 1960s.

In a way, the artist who shunned the gallery path now hath his own gallery. Nothing is for sale.

“I curate whatever I find and put it on the wall,” Armstrong said. “If it looks good, it stays.”

When he was evicted from his apartment two years ago, the Field brothers let him stay for free in cramped sleeping quarters in the warehouse where the vintage cars are kept. They say he can stay until the right place comes along.

“All my friends have been evicted, and I’m living rent-free in San Francisco. I’m easy to please,” Armstrong said. “Other guys my age, they want to be in love and want their own private bathroom, but I’ll just take what comes my way. What else can you do? I mean, I get to live in San Francisco.”

“Poupelle of Chimney Town” manages to do something most people would tell you is impossible: Feel empathy for a pile of smelly trash. It’s a fitting feat for a film that encourages you to keep believing in your dreams even if everyone else believes them or tells you you’re wrong.

Based on a picture book by Akihiro Nishino, who also wrote the screenplay, “Poupelle of Chimney Town” is set in a city with so many chimneys that a thick layer of dark smoke hangs between it and the sky above. The authorities have convinced all residents that there is nothing beyond the smoke — or outside the city limits — and those who believe otherwise are persecuted as heretics.

But Lubicchi (voiced in English by Antonio Raul Corbo) — a young chimney sweep who recently lost his father — believes in the existence of stars and dreams of being able to see them one day. After he befriends a sentient, anthropomorphic pile of garbage that he names Poupelle (Tony Hale), he becomes intent on proving it.

There’s a rustic charm to the stylized 3DCG animation, particularly in Lubicchi’s design and movements. There’s also a playfulness in the way the film toggles with perspective in depicting the dense, smoky, steampunkish town, and in sequences that are reminiscent of video games. Director Yusuke Hirota even throws in a lively, Halloween-themed musical number that likely will appeal to kids.

The strength of Nishino’s adaptation is in its heart. “Poupelle” takes big emotional swings in depicting Lubicchi’s relationship with his father and his new friendship with Poupelle. And Poupelle is an endearing amalgam of the Tin Man and Scarecrow from “The Wizard of Oz.”

Less effective is the film’s attempt to channel story time, which for anyone but the youngest viewers will make parts of the narrative feel repetitive.

The film also takes aim at engaging with larger themes in both subtle (the perils of pollution) and overt (stifling oppression) ways. The most intriguing — if underdeveloped — is the critique of capital and centralized banking presented within the late exposition surrounding the origin story of Lubicchi’s smoky town.

But those shortfalls do not distract from “Poupelle’s” most resonant messages. Even in a world where people would rather stifle imagination, it’s important to keep looking up. “Poupelle” serves as a good reminder for viewers of all ages to not let their fears — or those of others — keep them from pursuing their dreams.

Nearly 100 people turned out for a town hall rally outside City Hall on Friday to honor Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and draw attention to the stubborn distance between his dream and reality for many of San Francisco’s black residents.

The three-hour event, organized by Bay Area grassroots organization Wealth and Disparities in the Black Community, featured a variety of speakers — including local politicians, civil rights attorneys, community organizers, city workers and residents — who hammered out a unanimous conclusion:

On the eve of the civil rights leader’s 93rd birthday, being black in San Francisco hasn’t gotten much easier.

“The big question is, how are Black San Franciscans doing right now?” said Phelicia Jones, founder of Wealth and Disparities. “I would say not too well.”

African Americans moved to San Francisco in large numbers during World War II to work in shipyards amid segregation, increasing the local black population from less than 5,000 to 32,000 in 1940, or 5% of the city’s population. According to recent city data, blacks still make up just 5% of San Francisco’s residents, but that’s down from 13% in 1970. And today, they make up 35% of the city’s homeless.

The average income for a black household is $31,000 compared to $110,000 for white families, and about 19% of black children in the city live in poverty.

“We’re the exact same people who fled the South’s lash, only to face housing discrimination, over-policing and mass incarceration,” said Adante Pointer, a civil rights attorney. “They unleashed the gates of hell on the church to repel our pride.”

Supervisor Shamann Walton said the Board of Supervisors is trying to fill some of these systemic gaps. The city established a redress task force in May and, starting last year, diverted $120 million in funds for local law enforcement agencies (about 7% of the sheriff’s and police department’s budget) to the city’s black neighborhoods. Funds are earmarked for small business grants and loans; educational and social justice programs for youth; and assistance with drug and mass incarceration rehabilitation, among other services.

“We’ve accomplished some things, we’ve channeled resources to the black community,” Walton said. “But even with these steps, there is still a long way to go.”

Walton said he doesn’t think it’s a coincidence that sensationalized petty crime coverage increased after the board agreed to shift funds from law enforcement to the black community.

“Every step we take forward, they try to hold us back,” Walton said. “It’s not surprising, it’s not new.”

The rally comes as Mayor London Breed is pursuing a controversial strategy to crack down on crime, drug use and public nuisance in the Tenderloin, an area home to homeless people who are disproportionately black and brown.

Supervisor Matt Haney, whose district also includes the tenderloin, said it was important to continue King’s fight.

“Black people continue to face inequalities in many areas of life, whether it’s education, housing or dealing with law enforcement,” he told The Chronicle. “This is a time to recommit to the work of civil rights and social justice for every black resident of our city.”

Police Officer Domingo Williams said he attended the event to show solidarity with his black community and to establish himself as an “access point” for local residents who mistrust his profession.

“I’m here to build confidence and I understand it’s going to take a while, and for good reason,” Williams said. “Black people have every reason to distrust law enforcement. I’m here to let people know I’m an option and a resource.”

Other Bay Area residents such as Dellfinia Hardy, Lynn Westry and Ramona Massey, all City of San Francisco workers, said they were at the event to show their support and agreed that the pitch that night would be a long-distance effort .

“Two years isn’t enough to fix that,” Westry told The Chronicle of the city’s black neighborhood investment plan. “Yes, funds have been diverted and that’s great, but we need to make sure we approach change in a systematic way if we want real change to reach the next generations. That would have dr. King wanted.”

It took months of work – between the City of San Francisco, Warner Bros., and the good folks at the Castro Theater – and featured many movie stars, starting with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. But the US premiere of “The Matrix Resurrections”, partly shot in San Francisco, on Saturday, December 18, was primarily a tribute to the visionary director Lana Wachowski.

Twenty-five years ago she and her sister Lilly Wachowski – then known as the Wachowski Brothers – had a Bay Area premiere of “Bound” in the historic Castro Film Palace during Frameline, the biggest LGBTQ + film festival worldwide. Lana, a transgender resident in San Francisco, who was directing this time alone, was determined to bring the latest chapter in the “Matrix” series to her favorite theater, which will be 100 years old next year.

“In high school, I struggled with my identity. I went to the movies with popcorn and sticky bottoms and it was a kung fu movie and I knew everything would be fine, ”she told the crowd. “I didn’t think I could become a Hollywood director. I didn’t think I could be a transgender woman and a director. “

The Castro demonstration of “Bound” helped her “imagine another outcome for my life,” she continued. And now: “I would like to say ‘thank you’ to this beautiful city, in which I fell in love with my wife 20 years ago.”

Karin Wachowski, who was in attendance, is an executive producer on the film.

Undoubtedly, the premiere of “The Matrix Resurrections” was a more gigantic affair than “Bound”. Castro Street was cordoned off in front of the theater and the security precautions were strict, even SWAT team members were stationed on the roof.

“It’s like the president is coming,” said a Castro employee.

A video was projected on the front of the theater and people unable to get tickets for the special screening could wait in a “fan zone” for Reeves and his cast to wave their hands and maybe sign autographs.

Mayling Suazo was right at the front of the fan zone with books, magazines and a “John Wick 3” Blu-ray with Reeves. Suazo and her husband drove out of Sacramento that morning to get a seat, even though they didn’t have tickets, in hopes of getting Reeves’ attention.

“Maybe he’ll sign my album,” said Suazo.

Fans started gathering as early as 9 a.m. for the 7 p.m. event. Castro Theater owner Steve Nasser, whose grandfather built the theater, which opened in 1922, bought coffee for everyone who got there early.

“This is one of the biggest premieres we’ve ever had,” said Nasser. “It cuts right at the top with ‘Milk’ premiering,” he noted, referring to Gus Van Sant’s 2008 biopic, in which Sean Penn played San Francisco-based gay politician Harvey Milk.

The premiere and after-party, which included Waterbar and Epic Steak along the Embarcadero with nightly fireworks in the bay, was filled with celebrities: Reeves, Moss, Wachowski, Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul Mateen II from the Bay Area, Jonathan Groff, the new star Jessica Henwick, Jada Pinkett-Smith and son Jaden Smith, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and husband Nick Jonas, the Mayor of San Francisco London Breed and even former San Francisco Giants player Hunter Pence who spent the night with his wife Alexis Cozombolidis danced in the waterbar.

Speaking at the Castro’s opening address, Breed noted that “when The Matrix was filmed in San Francisco, Lana Wachowski committed herself to that city and committed to doing more.” That meant creating jobs, even for some local kids from Opportunities for All, a youth development program in San Francisco who served as paid interns.

Wachowski responded by thanking the mayor, who makes a cameo in the film, for “turning no to yes” during filming across town.

Reeves, who was particularly shy about public appearances, also enthusiastically thanked San Francisco on stage before quickly passing the microphone over to Moss, who was delivering one of the most moving speeches of the evening. Although in constant demand since her breakthrough with the first Matrix in 1999, which starred in two Marvel series – Jessica Jones and Daredevil – and many other film and television projects, she didn’t become the breakout star some have predicted.

“The Matrix Resurrections” should dispel all doubts: at 54 she still has it. In fact, her pairing with Reeves, 57, makes the film one of the few action franchises with a middle-aged romance.

“I didn’t know how much I needed to be Trinity again,” she said of her Matrix character. “I hope from the bottom of my heart that you love the film as much as I made it. It was such a nice experience with Lana and all the beautiful artists who made this film. “

“The Matrix Resurrections” (R) opens in theaters on Wednesday December 22nd.

When designing a maximalist oasis in San Francisco, Emilie Munroe says the design process “started the old-fashioned way, with a package of torn magazine inspiration images”. The designer and her clients communicated by email and by exchanging links and online portfolios. “Also, since the project was carried out entirely while on-site protection, when face-to-face interactions and time on site were scarce, it seemed like the perfect old-fashioned way to start a successful customer relationship.”

The end product resulted in spaces that exuded warmth, color and personality as Munroe knew immediately that the design of this home would “revolve around pieces and ideas that exude joy, arouse curiosity and have a strong aesthetic voice”. She adds that wallflowers (that is, the type of people, not the decor) are definitely not welcome here!

Cameron Scott is in the spotlight after driving the truck that hauled the 139-year-old Victorian Englander House seven blocks down the streets of San Francisco last Sunday.

“One of my dreams was to move a building across San Francisco,” said Scott. “It was amazing to see all the people who came out.”

The 27-year-old told CBS Sacramento that there is a lot of pressure to be the one behind the wheel.

“Before you take the first train, you keep thinking through your head: ‘Did I do that? Are the blocks out of the way of the tires? ‘ You know, you are thinking about everything that could happen next, ”Scott explained.

This is nothing new for his family business Scott Heavy Movers. The Sacramento-based company has existed since 1959 and is known for moving massive objects such as buildings and bridges.

“It’s crazy because that happens every day, the only difference between this one and a normal one is that we were in San Francisco,” he said.

In the Sacramento area, Scott Heavy Movers is currently working on a FEMA-funded project to build houses out of the floodplain.

“We probably did six or eight last year and that’s great because it really helps a lot of people,” said Scott.

The move cost the owner more than $ 400,000. Moving Victorians around town was common during the 1960s redevelopment, but it got more difficult over time, making Englander House the first San Francisco Victorian to move since 1974.

The Scott family feels proud to know that their work helps save history.

“If not, this building would have been demolished, which is a terrible idea because it’s a beautiful building inside and out,” said Scott. “To know that we have moved is a great feeling.”

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – While Anh ‘Peng’ Taylor was recovering Thursday from the wounds she suffered in a brutal attack on a street in San Francisco, her family began detailing their amazing journey from war-torn Southeast Asia to the Bay Area to share.

The 94-year-old was born in Haiphong in 1926 of Chinese and Vietnamese descent. She immigrated to Laos later in life when Vietnam was involved in a war. She worked as a cook in a restaurant she owned, where she met her future husband. They married in Bangkok and lived there for a few years before moving to Hawaii and then to San Francisco in the early 1970s.

Her husband, a US war veteran, died almost two years ago. She has lived in the same apartment in San Francisco’s criminal Tenderloin neighborhood for 45 years, taking her daily walks and waving to her neighbors.

On Wednesday at 10.15 a.m., she was allegedly attacked in Block 800 on Poststrasse by 35-year-old Daniel Cauich, who was taken into custody two hours later.

She was stabbed in the wrist, suffered additional cuts and was hit in the head. According to the police, she did nothing to provoke the attack. Taylor just took her daily walk.

“She only takes short walks with her stick, she doesn’t bother anyone,” says friend and neighbor Miranda Benvenuti. “She gives us cookies.”

“It’s just sad that someone (the suspect) is such a monster and so cruel,” added Benvenuti.

Her niece spoke to Betty Yu from KPIX 5 and told her that from her hospital bed, her aunt asked her, “Why should this happen to me?”

It wasn’t immediately known whether Taylor was targeted for her race or a casual victim in a crime-ridden neighborhood. But since the COVID-19 pandemic began, violence against Asian Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area has increased astonishingly.

There have been dozens of attacks, some fatal, in Oakland, San Francisco and South Bay.

According to a report by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, released June 1, 12 hate crimes were committed against Asian Americans in San Francisco in the first quarter of 2021 – a 140 percent increase from the first Quarter of 2020.
