The LJ Kruse Company in Berkeley, California, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The plumbing and heating company has been continuously owned and operated by the Kruse family since it was founded by Louis Joseph Kruse in 1916. Andy Kruse, president and part of the third generation of leadership, said in a statement, “We are very excited to enter our second century of plumbing, heating and cooling services in the Bay Area. I often think about what my grandfather Louis would say if he saw the operation today. While the past is important to us, we are more focused on the future as the fourth generation is now about to take over.”

Founder Louis J. Kruse was the son of a German immigrant who came to California to prospect in the gold fields of the Sierra foothills. Louis was born in Grass Valley in 1889, and when his father died in a mysterious mining accident a few years later, the family moved to San Francisco. Louis grew up in the city, enjoyed working with his hands, and learned to be a gasfitter at Lick-Wilmerding, then a vocational school.

After the great earthquake of 1906, Louis saw the tremendous potential for tradesmen in the East Bay and moved to Oakland. He built a home in the Rockridge neighborhood and opened his plumbing shop on College Avenue in 1916. After his death in 1946, his son, Edward H. Kruse, presided over the company's rapid postwar growth. The firm now operates in all five Bay Area counties and is run by the third generation, Dave and Andy Kruse. The fourth generation of Kruse leadership is ready to take the lead. They include Janell Kruse Yates VP, Nathan Kruse VP, Ben Kruse union plumber and Will Kruse dispatcher. “We need the youth and the energy that comes with it,” Andy says. “When our grandfather was young, he had a vision, and the next generation does too.”

The LJ Kruse Company operates two divisions from its 20,000-square-foot headquarters in Berkeley, California. (The building was renovated to LEED GOLD standards in 2012.) The construction division focuses on large commercial and residential projects with a strong emphasis on healthcare and design-build capabilities. The company utilizes in-house CAD, BIM and prefabrication techniques to install complex plumbing and piping systems in new and existing buildings throughout the region. The service division focuses on repairing and maintaining commercial, industrial and residential plumbing, heating and cooling systems. All field work for both divisions is performed by unionized plumbers, pipefitters and sheet metal workers and supported by an office staff of experienced managers and executives. The company is one of the few plumbing companies in the region that offers a range of services, from a one-hour service visit to your home to a multi-million dollar plumbing installation at a hospital.

WALNUT CREEK – As Cheryl Dumesnil and Tracie Vickers prepared for their wedding a decade ago, they thought about living in San Francisco, where other gay and lesbian families would surround them, or retreating to the suburbs where they grew up were.

Their choice of central Contra Costa County made them pioneers, the first two-mother family in their leafy Walnut Creek neighborhood.

“This is Tracie's suburban dream,” Dumesnil said Tuesday at their ranch house, as the couple's 6-year-old son, Brennan, quietly read a book and 4-year-old Kian marched around the kitchen, a singing troubadour playing a white guitar Guitar. Neighbors welcomed this family with cookies and open arms.

“After saying I would never move to the suburbs again, here I am,” Dumesnil said.

The family of four is among nearly 1 percent of California households – about 126,000 households – headed by same-sex couples, according to 2010 Census statistics released Thursday. If the numbers are accurate, they show that nearly a quarter of same-sex couples in California are raising children.

While San Francisco remains a gay hub – the city has more than 10,000 gay and lesbian couples, compared to fewer than 300 in Walnut Creek – the census found same-sex couples in every corner of the state, making it clear that Same-sex couples in many parts of the state, suburban and rural areas have far higher chances of having children.

“We are not just a special interest group concentrated in large urban centers,” Dumesnil said. “We’re basically everywhere, just trying to live a legally protected and fulfilling life.”

Fifteen years after the federal Defense of Marriage Act banned gay marriage and seven years after San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom defiantly ordered licenses to be granted to same-sex couples, gay and lesbian families remain at odds political crosshairs, but also say that society is increasingly at risk. I'm getting used to having them – and their children – with us. In turn, whether they have been previously counted or not, more same-sex couples are aware of identifying themselves on census forms.

Demographers warn that the numbers may overcount same-sex couples because opposite-sex couples miscoded each other in a confusing way. The errors are compounded because there are far more opposite-sex couples than same-sex couples.

Gay and lesbian couples are identified in the census when the head of the household reports living with a “husband” or “unmarried partner” of the same sex. Changes in the way the Census Bureau counts same-sex couples make it difficult to accurately compare with the 2000 census, when the count found more than 92,000 same-sex couples in California.
However, it is clear that the number of open same-sex couples nationwide has increased significantly over the last decade.

“We have evidence that over time, more and more people are willing to report (same-sex unions),” said demographer Gary Gates of UCLA's Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law. “We saw that these increases were the largest outside of well-known gay neighborhoods. I expect these increases would be larger in the Central Valley than in San Francisco.”

Same-sex couples in suburban and rural areas are far more likely to be raising children than their urban counterparts. National studies show that about 19 percent of children of same-sex couples are adopted, Gates said. Many more are children from previous heterosexual relationships.

“This type of pattern is much more common in conservative areas where people come out later in life,” Gates said. “The further you get from San Francisco, the greater the proportion of same-sex couples raising children.”

For some same-sex couples, life in the outskirts of the Bay Area still seems like living on a cultural frontier.

The census counted 138 gay male couples in Antioch last year and found that 30 percent of them have children. However, partners Joe Horacek and Jonathan Lee only know one other family like them, who lives on the other side of town.

The family moved from South San Francisco to Antioch in 2004 because they wanted a larger, cheaper home to raise their three adopted children. Horacek and Lee were among about 18,000 same-sex couples who married for six months in 2008, when gay marriage was legal in the state, before voters passed Proposition 8. Life in Antioch was simpler when the children were small; Her oldest children, 14 and 13, now struggle to fit in in a community where two fathers are a rarity.

“My son encountered some negative reactions from kids on Facebook,” said Horacek, a local teacher. “We don’t want to be the ones putting the targets on their backs. All children get teased about something, but usually it has to do with themselves. We add that additional liability for customization.”

Hosts who greet the family of five at local restaurants sometimes mistake them for two separate parties. Because her 9-year-old daughter doesn't have a mother, a school principal recently asked if she could play the role for a Mother's Day tea. Usually polite conversation smooths over an adult's confusion, but the couple sometimes wonders if life would be easier for their children on the other side of the East Bay hills.

“For the most part, no one has questioned us or given us any problems, but there is more assumption here that the children have both a mother and a father,” Horacek said. “I know that, particularly in places like Berkeley and Alameda County, conversations about different types of families and same-sex relationships are part of the curriculum. That’s not necessarily the case out here.”

Three percent of households in San Francisco and just over two percent of households in Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville are headed by same-sex couples, making these Bay Area cities with the highest concentrations of gay and lesbian partners. Other East Bay cities are close behind, and most of the neighborhoods outside of San Francisco with the census-highest number of same-sex couples are along the East Oakland foothills.

Same-sex couples from the East Bay are also more likely to have children than couples from San Francisco, although the same is true for heterosexual couples as well. Just over 4 percent of gay male couples in San Francisco and 19 percent of lesbian couples have children, compared to 11 percent of gay male couples and 22 percent of lesbian couples in Oakland.

Maya Scott-Chung and her multi-ethnic family also chose the East Bay because she found it more diverse.

“It wasn't just because we could afford to buy a house here, although that was part of it,” said Scott-Chung, who lives with her transgender partner and daughter in Oakland's San Antonio neighborhood . “It is important to us to live in Oakland because it is one of the most culturally, linguistically and economically diverse places in the Bay Area and probably the world. There are a large number of lesbian and two-mother families here.”

Nationally, lesbian partners are more likely to raise children than gay men – 32 percent of lesbian households have children, compared to 17.8 percent of gay male couples. Horacek said being a minority among minorities in a place like Antioch can be exciting and a little scary.

“Obviously gays have been in relationships for centuries, but this appears to be the first generation where this is happening in large numbers, particularly through the addition of children into the family,” he said. “We sometimes feel like we are soldiers at the front. Change is happening, but it’s still not mainstream here.”

Dumesnil said she and her wife have seen perceptions in Walnut Creek slowly change as they interacted with straight families at school events and in their neighborhood.

“Someone has to be out here,” she said. “In a way, the presence of the children was the great equalizer.”

A Nevada handyman was convicted Tuesday of killing an 81-year-old man who was strangled six years ago in the bedroom of a Newport Beach home.

An Orange County Superior Court jury found Anthony Thomas Garcia, 62, guilty of first degree murder for the April 11, 2015 slaying of Abelardo Lopez Estacion.

The jury, however, found the killing was not carried out for financial gain. Such a determination would have made it a special circumstances murder, which would have led to a likely sentence of life without the possibility of parole.

The conviction comes less than a year after another jury was unable to reach a verdict, leading to a mistrial and a second trial. The second trial was delayed several times mid-testimony after Garcia was placed in temporary quarantine due to being exposed to other jail inmates who tested positive for COVID-19.

The killing came in the midst of an ugly fight over the estate of Dortha Lamb, Estacion’s dying wife. Garcia was the former boyfriend of Lamb’s granddaughter, and two of Garcia’s daughters were Lamb’s great-granddaughters.

At the beginning of Garcia’s latest trial, Deputy District Attorney Seton Hunt told jurors that the case was about “family, greed, hatred and deception.”

Lamb – a self-made woman who owned valuable real estate in Newport Beach, San Clemente and Costa Mesa – had been with Estacion for more than 20 years, but only married him shortly before his death. At the time of Estacion’s slaying, Lamb was dying from terminal cancer and suffering from dementia.

According to testimony during the trials, Garcia and some of Lamb’s relatives believed that Estacion was abusing Lamb and taking advantage of her health issues to siphon money from her accounts. Garcia had told others that he wanted to kill Estacion, according to testimony.

A legal battle broke out, with Lamb’s family taking her from her Newport Beach home and trying to get Estacion kicked out of the residence and barred from contacting Lamb. A judge delayed a decision on whether to approve a temporary restraining order against Estacion.

Hours later, someone entered the Newport Beach home, cut power to the residence, and then smothered, struck, and strangled Estacion.

Prosecutors allege that Garcia drove from Carson City to Newport Beach to kill Estacion, then immediately drove back. They say he left his cell phone with his adult daughter, Samantha Garcia, to make it look like he was still in Nevada.

Samantha Garcia initially told investigators that she had her father’s cell phone the night of Estacion’s killing and carried out a fake text conversation between the two of them. But during both trials the daughter recanted those claims, alleging detectives pressured her to lie and saying she didn’t have her father’s cell phone that night.

During the trials, Garcia’s attorney, Alisha Montoro, described Garcia as a non-violent, devoted family man who lived a simple life. The defense attorney denied that Garcia believed his daughters were entitled to Lamb’s money, and told jurors that Garcia wasn’t even in California the night of the killing.

Garcia is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on April 28. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison.

Take the delicate phyllo-based pastries at an Oakland coffee shop teeming with faux flowers, where the owners are also serving up fragrant rose lattes and lemonades. And a Bay Area chain is hooking dessert lovers with soft serve in whimsical fish-shaped cones.

Other noteworthy newcomers are serving Korean tofu stews, craft spirits and chapli kebabs. And popular hot chicken operation Hotbird made its return to Oakland, where it debuted in 2017 as one of the first to offer Nashville-style chicken in the Bay Area.

Hotbird returns to Oakland

San Francisco’s Hotbird has moved to Oakland’s Uptown neighborhood. The spicy chicken spot, owned by Aaron Nam and Caleb Longacre, was a fixture at Oakland’s First Fridays in 2017 before moving to a food truck and eventual kiosk in Twitter’s Mid-Market building. The restaurant, featuring a mural of a fire-breathing red chicken, specializes in Nashville-style hot chicken sandwiches: crispy fried meat lacquered with pepper-infused oil and served with apple-vinegar slaw, a signature sauce and dill pickles on a buttered bun . Fish and chips, wings and cheddar-infused grits topped with charred tomato and pickled corn salsa, round out the menu. Beers for sale include IPAs from Berryessa Brewing Co. and Oakland Unite’s black lager.

Former Syrian restaurant owners open cafe

Pink paint and strands of frilly flowers adorn the former Jumpin’ Java space in Oakland’s Rockridge district, now home to Damask Rose Coffee. The cafe serves the usual coffee-based drinks along with specialty beverages such as rose lemonade and lattes. Among the pastry offerings are baklava, warbat (an Arabic pastry similar to baklava) and birds’ nests cradling pistachio fillings. The coffee shop is run by the former owners of Old Damascus Fare, one of the Bay Area’s few Syrian restaurants, which closed during the pandemic.

Korean eatery replaces beloved Berkeley Italian restaurant

Korean Superette has opened up in the space of the former Rivoli on busy Solano Avenue in Berkeley. The mini-mart and comfort-food operation sells packages of instant ramen and homemade kimchi alongside mandu (dumplings), tofu stew and bulgogi. While its kitchen closes at 7:30 pm, the market is open until 9 pm, allowing home cooks the chance to run in and grab some banchan, Korean side dishes such as pickled radish, to go with their meals. The restaurant kept Rivoli’s patio, allowing diners the option of eating indoors or outdoors.

Distilled spirits up for grabs

Richmond distillery Dissident Spirits, which produces craft rum, vodka, gin and acquavite d’uva, a grape-based liquor, has opened a tasting room. If you’re lucky, you’ll stop by on a day the staff is whipping up martinis and other cocktails with their small-batch booze. The distillery team is currently experimenting with amaro and whiskey, according to its Facebook page. Limited quantities of Dissident’s spirits are available for purchase.

Bay Area dessert chain Uji Time has opened its sixth location in Concord. The shop is known for its taiyaki cones, where batter is poured into sizzling-hot griddles in the shape of an open-mouthed fish. They’re topped with soft-serve flavors including matcha, ube, black sesame and vanilla, with an option to fill the cone with red bean paste or Nutella. Tri Valley gets a new Afghan spot

Afghan restaurant 786 Kabob House has opened in a strip mall in the foothills of Danville. For dessert, there’s a regional take on baklava, plus firni, an Afghan pudding flavored with cardamom and topped with pistachios.

New espresso bar comes to Berkeley

Berkeley native Tommy Judt has opened the Line Coffee, serving espresso drinks made with beans roasted in Vallejo. Drip and cold brew are also available. For heartier fare, there are caprese sandwiches, avocado toast and deep-dish quiche by the slice.

SUISUN BAY (KPIX) — Two Bay Area oil refineries looking to convert to processing biofuels are facing what some might consider unlikely opposition.

On the edge of Suisun Bay is Marathon’s Martinez refinery. Marathon would like to convert the facility into a renewable fuels manufacturing facility. Environmental groups have filed an appeal.

“56 years I’ve lived near the refinery,” said Pat Hendrickson of Rodeo. “Right across the street from me. I’ve never had any problems with them.”

For some longtime neighbors like Henderickson, the Phillips 66 Refinery in Rodeo is just another neighbor. Several KPIX spoke with Monday said they were not very familiar with the plans to convert this facility to biofuels.

“Well I don’t understand, totally, what the difference is going to be,” she said. “But I feel like, at this point, there’s really not much I can do about it.”

“These biofuel projects are a boondoggle,” said Hollin Kretzmann of the Center for Biological Diversity. “It’s greenwashing, plain and simple. Unfortunately the county has brought into it so far.”

The Center is one of more than a dozen environmental groups that have appealed to the changes. For example. they reject claims by Marathon that the conversion will significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and water use.

“Feedstocks, the soybeans and the corn oil, that are going to have to feed these huge massive facilities have to come from somewhere,” Kretzmann said.

The county planning commission has approved the conversions, opponents say that process was faulty. The Board of Supervisors will hear that appeal Tuesday.

“You know, we should not be making decisions on what types of stuff to burn into the air,” Kretzmann said of longer-term climate goals. “We should be moving away from this wholesale, and decommissioning these dirty facilities.”

“If there was a vote, I’d educate myself on what the difference might be,” Hendrickson said of the discussion. “But I don’t think there’s going to be a vote. What happens happens.”

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) — A blighted block in East San Jose is about to get some badly needed attention from an arts group that wants to expand and redevelop the area.

The School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza wants to build performance and rehearsal spaces, a cafe, and a mental health clinic on the block where a row of vacant storefronts has been hit with vandalism and homeless encampments.

“We will be filling a building that’s been vacant for seven or eight years,” said Chris Esparza, one of the school’s co-directors.

The site sits on the north side of Alum Rock Avenue at King Road, across the street from the school.

Esparza says the school has secured large financial grants from Santa Clara County and other supporters to begin the transformation which could revitalize the area. The mental health clinic will be run by Gardner Healthcare.

The redevelopment will also give a helping hand to the three small businesses already there.

“We’re going to focus on economic development, community development and cultural development, which we do best,” Esparza said.

The school sits in a neighborhood that was an epicenter for death and illness during the pandemic and the trauma that comes with it.

The plaza itself—busy again with meetings and performances—was a testing and vaccination site for the last two years.

“We need to fix some inequities that have existed and move forward and thrive,” Esparza said.

Neighborhood reaction so far is positive even though some communities might say no to a mental health clinic moving in.

“I’ve had family with mental health problems, friends have had it. I know people who’ve committed suicide over it. So, any opportunity that we can help people is always a great idea,” said Alvaro Perez, who lives in the neighborhood.
