THU/15: HOLIDAY GAIETY SF Symphony conductor Edwin Outwater and drag goddess Peaches Christ just slayed London’s Royal Abert Hall with their holiday extravaganza, don’t miss this annual cavalcade of queer entertainers (Sister Roma, Monet X-Change, Marga Gomez, Jocquese Whitfield, many more) donning their gay apparel and jingling all the way, backed by a full orchestra. The Symphony has a whole lineup of fun seasonal programs, including Harry Connick, Jr, and a Merry-achi Christmas, make sure to check out their site. 7:30pm, Davies Symphony Hall, SF. More info here.

In this bawdy and blasphemous musical, Angel, Winnie, Trixie, and Trampolina are trying to sell off their manger—yes, that manger—before it’s foreclosed upon. Crises arise, secrets are revealed, Jewish-Gentile tensions surface, and mayhem ensues, all in glorious four-part harmony.” New Conservatory Theater, SF. More info here.

THU/15-SAT/17: KILLING MY LOBSTER’S VERY SPECIAL HOLIDAY SPECIAL Forget Charlie Brown and the Grinch — Killing My Lobster, the self-described “eggnog of sketch comedy troupes,” are brewing up a hilariously schmentzy parody holiday variety show and performing it for you.
Christmas is less than two weeks away, which means it’s time to start chugging spiked eggnog and kick that holiday spirit into high gear. Just call us Santa’s little helpers as we’ve rounded up all of SF’s jolliest holiday events, from heartwarming opportunities to help those in need, holiday pop-ups at the city’s best bars to a slew of stage performances, and gingerbread houses that are so big you can walk inside of them.
Now-December 27
War Memorial Opera House/Civic Center
Going to a performance of the Nutcracker is a quintessential holiday tradition, especially in San Francisco since the SF Ballet was the first ballet company to ever perform the show in the United States. This version stays true to the original with giant mice, a growing Christmas tree, and Tchaikovsky’s timeless score, but with lots of SF-specific twists that you’ll want to be sure to keep an eye out for.
Cost:Tickets range from $10 (SRO) to $375 (Box Center).

Friday, December 23 – Monday, December 26
Congregation Sherith Israel/Pacific Heights and Virtually
Chinese food and Christmas might be a Jewish cliché, but it’s one we appreciate very much, especially when that cliché manifests in the form of a Jewish comedy show in a pop-up Chinese restaurant inside an inclusive Jewish synagogue. Food will be provided by Green Chow Down, and laughs will be provided by a slew of stand-up comedians.
Cost: $90 to $100

Drink festive cocktails at a bunch of holiday pop-up bars

Ongoing through Saturday, December 31
Various locations
Raise a glass to long weekends or escape visiting relatives at one of several holiday bars that have popped up around SF. Pacific Cocktail Haven (Union Square) has transformed into “Miracle,” the beloved pop-up that occurs all over the country (but only in one bar per city), and its sister bar, Kona’s Street Market (SoMa), is taking a tropical twist on the holiday with a “Sippin’ Santa” theme. Trade Routes (Russian Hill) is fully festive with a “Tinsel Time” theme, including a boozy Frosty the Slushie concoction and other cheer-inducing drinks. If you’re willing to plan ahead, book a reservation for Tinseltown at Trademark Bar (SoMa), where you’ll find the halls have been fully decked, and you may get to interact with some of Santa’s helpers and maybe even the jolly old you yourself. Horsefeather (Divisadero Corridor) also has a Christmas cocktail menu, as does The Madrigal (Civic Center), and there are two Deck the Halls locations in Cow Hollow this year: Outre and the Blue Light. Prefer your festivities with a side of devilish mayhem? Rye Bar’s Krampus pop-up is what you need.
Cost: various

Ongoing through Saturday, December 24
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts/SoMa
We’ll always love the Nutcracker, but if you’re looking to mix it up this year, you’ll want to get tickets to Smuin’s The Christmas Ballet, which kicks off with beautiful classical ballet set to beloved carols and then transforms in the second act to “red hot contemporary numbers” set to pop favorites. Go on Tuesday, December 20, if you want to experience the LGBTQ+ night performance with a cameo from Lady Camden, first runner-up on the most recent season of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Cost: $25 to $99

Marvel at larger-than-life edible holiday displays at local hotels

Ongoing through Saturday, December 31
Fairmont San Francisco/Nob Hill and the Westin St Francis/Union Square
We don’t like to pick favorites, but if you’re only going to visit one hotel to get your Christmas fix, it should be the Fairmont, which is where you’ll find a two-story, life-sized Victorian gingerbread house that stands 25 feet tall, that you can walk inside.
The infamous SailGP event hits San Francisco Bay this weekend showcasing the world’s best foiling sailors on the F50 foiling catamaran. The event, now in its second season, continues to create drama and magic on the water in the world’s best sailing venues for a winner-takes-all-prize.

The F50 is a further iteration from the AC 50 launched early in 2017 for use in the 35th America’s Cup in 2017 in Bermuda and has been a boost to the huge and growing interest in foiling watersports anywhere there is breeze and water. Perfect for kids like Marin groms Henry Vare (13) and Morgan Headington (15) who thrive on fast and exciting.

The pair will be flying high on the Bay along with six other youth wing foilers when they participate in a wing foiling freestyle exhibition and slalom racing events between the official SailGP races which take place between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz starting at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday, with a practice session for all fleets on Friday afternoon.

Henry’s dad, Michael Vare, spearheaded the opportunity for the youngsters, reaching out to SailGP Inspire, the League’s community outreach program, to coordinate a youth event as part of the San Francisco SailGP stopover. He said the kids are ecstatic to be involved in such a high-profile event doing something they love and excel at. As part of the program, the kids will meet with the SailGP teams and be a big part of the action this weekend.

“The kids put together their bios including their favorite tricks and who they ride for, so they’re very excited,” Vare said. “SailGP Inspire will provide them with bright colored jerseys, they’ll have numbers on their wings and there will be commentary shoreside about this growing sport of wing foiling,”.

Vare and Headington followed their dads into wing foiling some 2 1/2 years ago and now the dads are taking a bit of a back seat as the kids’ passion for wing foiling grows. But that’s okay, says Geoff Headington, a long-time competitive water sports enthusiast, who loves being out on the water with his son.

“I feel like it takes some of the pressure off me from a competitive standpoint,” Headington laughed. “It makes me happy to support him and make sure he’s on the right gear, watch him go and give him tips and instructions, I’m becoming more of a coach than a competitor. I get a lot of joy seeing Morgan improve.”

The boys dialed in some pre-event training when they raced a wing foil regatta several weekends ago on the Bay, the first ever to be raced in the US and hosted by the St Francis Yacht Club. They’re stoked for this weekend.

“I’m really excited to have the great opportunity to race between the F50 races because of the novelty that it has,” Morgan, a sophomore at Redwood High said. “Some of my sailing idols are skippers of these boats and being able to sail alongside them, especially in the same event, is awesome. I’m also excited for the freestyle exhibition because that style of winging is my favorite part of the sport and its super fun to try tricks, even if you fly uncontrollably through the air and bellyflop into the water.

“I’ve been working on my 360 spins for the freestyle event, as well as tactics and mechanics for the slalom racing. For the racing I’ve been practicing speed gybes and my VMG (velocity made good) angle downwind.

Henry, an eighth grader at Del Mar Middle School, was a regular at the St Francis Yacht Club wing foiling race events last year and at just 12 years old placed 3rd overall at the end of the season. He’s been an inspiration for both his peers and adults wanting to get into the sport and is psyched for this weekend.

“I am really looking forward to performing in front of an audience!” Henry said. “I’ve been practicing my racing skills and freestyle tricks leading up to the event.”

Supporting activities that are on the pathway for the next generation of sailing athletes to become inspired and involved in SailGP is as important to the event as staying at the leading edge of technology which ultimately benefits the kind of foiling watersports, like winging, that we regularly see on San Francisco Bay.

“The F50 is constantly being updated, with new wingsails in Season 2 and new T foils being built now,” Russell Coutts, co-founder of the SailGP circuit said. “With the new foils (expected in October) they are predicted to exceed 55 knots of boat speed. The new wings are modular which allow us to use a smaller (faster) configuration in strong winds. The next development will be new rudders. We are also increasing the ‘righting moment’ by making adjustments to the rudder settings which will also make the boats faster.”

Coutts continued, “The F50 is a very good boat for what we are doing because they can now sail both in very efficiently light winds and very strong winds which opens a lot of additional venue possibilities. They are also transported in containers which is essential for this League.”

The month of June is filled with many things – the end of the school year and the start of summer vacation, Father’s Day and the anticipation of the vacation.

June is also Pride month for LGBTQ + communities in the US and other countries around the world.

Pride Month is a time to honor our country’s diversity in terms of sexual orientation and gender identity.

The first Pride Parade took place in New York City in 1970. The annual event coincides with the 1969 Stonewall Riots.

One of the most iconic symbols of Pride Month is the rainbow flag, created by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978. The colors of the flag are associated with diversity.

Every year, LGBTQ + communities honor Pride Month with a variety of events and activities such as parades, festivals, screenings, and concerts.

While many in-person events were canceled due to the pandemic over the past year, communities across the state and across the country are planning a mix of in-person and virtual events to celebrate Pride Month.

Below are eight in-person events taking place in Colorado and Wyoming that celebrate Pride Month 2021.

1. Boulder County Pride is scheduled for Monday June 7th through June 13th with a jam-packed calendar of events including a motorcade, drive-in movie screening, name and gender change clinic, storytimes, and mixers. The free event is open to all ages. More information is available at www.outboulder.org.

2. The Pride Kickoff will be held on Friday, June 11th, 5pm to 10pm at Ellson Farms, 10450 W. Bowles Ave., Littleton. The event features live performances, vendors, food trucks, and more. All age groups are very welcome. Tickets cost between $ 10 and $ 60. Further information can be found at https://bit.ly/3i9GlNU.

3. The City of Avon is holding Pride in the Park at 1 W. Benchmark Road at noon on Saturday, June 12th. The event includes yoga, a fashion show, guest speakers, parade, dance party, and more. The free event is open to all ages. Further information can be found at https://bit.ly/3g8nccq.

4. Pride on the Rooftop is scheduled for Friday, June 25th at 6pm in the Desk Chair Workspace, 201 E. 4th St., Loveland. Attendees can enjoy food, drinks, live entertainment, guest speakers, and award shows. Tickets are $ 50 per person and include a glass of beer or wine, tapas, desserts, and all activities. The event is aimed at adults aged 21 and over. Further information can be found at https://bit.ly/3z1zD2k.

5. Laramie PrideFest runs throughout June with a variety of events and activities. The grand finale of the events begins on the weekend of June 25th to 27th with a drag / burlesque show, Pride proclamation and parade, Pride in the Park and a candlelight vigil. The free event is open to all ages. Further information can be found at https://bit.ly/2TG0y3G.

6. Denver Pride starts on Saturday June 26th and runs through June 27th in downtown Denver. Festivities include a 5K, virtual Pride parade, family events, a film festival, and more. More information is available at www.Denverpride.org.

7. The Pride Ride will begin on Sunday June 27th at 9:00 am at Trek Bicycle Fort Collins South, 931 E. Harmony Road, Fort Collins. Bring your bike, helmet, and water for a fun day of biking and socializing. All age groups are cordially invited to take part in the free event. Further information can be found at https://bit.ly/3za8pH4.

8. Colorado Springs is hosting its Pride Month events on July 11th and 12th from 11am to 6pm at America the Beautiful Park, 126 Cimino Drive. Festivities include a 5K, The People’s March, and more. Tickets cost 2 euros at the box office. The proceeds will be donated to the community.
Berkeley City Council passed an ordinance to cut spending on animal products in half by 2024 and encourage the city to serve vegan food at public gatherings, prisons, senior centers and city buildings.

The mayor of the city, Jesse Arreguín, co-sponsored this measure, which is the first of its kind. She calls on the progressive city to offer plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, whole grains and seeds in public buildings.

The development is the result of the advance of Direct Action Everywhere, or DxE, an animal rights group in Berkeley that is advocating the same thing in San Francisco, Chicago, and other major cities.

DxE pushed for Berkeley to be 100 percent plant-based, but the city refused to give it all.

Schools were exempt from the ordinance because they were run by the independent school district.

The resolution cites reducing meat and milk consumption as part of Berkeley’s efforts to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The city has also initiated several environmentally relevant measures, reported KRON4.

In 2019, it became the first city in the country to ban natural gas pipelines from new buildings, and in the 1970s it was also the first to implement a garbage recycling program.
