At 2:27 a.m. on June 10, Kate Sutherland received a notification. A person was discovered in her empty apartment at Tehama 33.

“When I opened the video, I happened to see a person strolling through my device and taking a video with a flash. That sent goosebumps down my spine,” Sutherland said.

The eerie video showed what looked like a person moving slowly in the dark. The building was empty for several days after a burst water pipe flooded the building. Kate ended her lease four days after recording this video.

RELATED: Residents of a luxury apartment in SF displaced after pipes burst that flooded all 35 floors

Luz Pena: “How did they explain what happened?”

Kate Sutherland: “You really know how to explain it. They kept saying it was unauthorized.”

Kate's story is just the tip of the iceberg. This week another resident caught a contractor using the toilet in one of the apartments and taking something on the way out. Hines, the real estate company that owns the building, confirmed the theft on Monday, saying in part:

“It was recorded that a contractor performing repairs on one of the units at Tehama 33 removed items from the unit. This contractor was terminated immediately.”

In the case of Stephanie Sunwoo, thousands of dollars disappeared from her bank account this morning.

“Two fraudulent checks were cashed on my account. They both total over $1,500 each in my bank account,” said Stephanie Sunwoo, 33, a Tehama resident.

RELATED: Residents of flooded San Francisco luxury building may not be able to return home until 2023

Sunwoo says her entire checkbook is in her bedside table in her empty apartment.

“The thought of someone going through the bedside table in my bedroom, taking a box full of checkbooks is really alarming, and now I'm very afraid of identity theft,” Sunwoo said.

Residents also report theft in the bike room.

“Our bike room was completely looted. There are remains of people's bicycles. Some people’s bikes are completely missing,” Sunwoo said.

Regarding theft, Hines said, among other things:

“While we have not yet confirmed the validity of these claims, we have temporarily withdrawn all contractors’ access to housing units while we work on a solution to increase safety measures.”

RELATED: Residents report 2nd water leak, suspected theft, at luxury SF condos

And for residents like Maarya Abbasi, these reports make them want to get all their belongings out of the building quickly. She says Hines makes it difficult.

“It just feels like a nightmare that never ends,” Maarya Abbasi said.

Hines does not allow residents to enter the building and only lets them use Hines-hired movers.

“That's something I asked Tehama too: 'What can we do if our property is damaged?' I was just told we had to get our own renters insurance,” Abbasi said.

Hines said they are providing locked storage units for residents who are scheduled to move out by the end of the month.

As for the theft of bikes, they said they did not know if bikes were stolen, but said a large number of bikes were left behind.

RELATED: New 'catastrophic' details reveal what went wrong at flooded luxury apartment building in SF

We also followed up and asked about the resident who said her checkbook was stolen and they said it was a police matter.

Statement from Hines on 33 Tehama – August 16, 2022

“It has come to our attention that on August 15, 2022, a contractor performing repairs on one of the units at 33 Tehama was on record removing items from the unit. This contractor was terminated with immediate effect. All construction workers in 33 Tehama are licensed. We are bonded and insured and work with reputable subcontractors. We ensure security on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and keeping our residents' belongings safe is our top priority.

There are very few allegations of other security issues in the units. Although we have not yet confirmed the validity of these claims, we have temporarily withdrawn all contractors' access to housing units while we work on a solution to increase security measures. These measures include, at a minimum, a comprehensive video surveillance system to capture footage while contractors are in residents' units to protect their property on an active construction site.

When we learned that the timeline for re-occupancy of 33 Tehama would extend into 2023 and informed residents that they would need to find alternative housing, we began working with the city government and local building owners to find housing for our am to secure most vulnerable residents, which include residents of the 60 units below market rate (BMR) at 33 Tehama. We were successful with the city, who responded promptly to the request. We continue to work with local building owners to find housing solutions for these residents. We hope that building owners in San Francisco with vacant BMR units will agree to support these 33 Tehama residents by offering them housing at this time.

As financial and lodging assistance for 33 Tehama residents ends tomorrow, August 17th, we have extended financial and hotel lodging assistance to tenants who meet certain income requirements through August 31st. We continue to work closely with building owners and in Partner with Supervisor Dorsey and other government officials to find a longer-term solution. “

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu said Tuesday that he will look into the loss of Twitter janitors’ jobs, which appears to be in violation of San Francisco law.

Members of the SEIU Local 87 went on strike Monday as their contract was set to expire Dec. 9. The contractor that employed them is set to be replaced by another contractor that Twitter would not disclose to the union, according to Olga Miranda, president of the union local. Twitter then moved up the janitors’ last day on the job to Monday, she said.

According to San Francisco law, when a company changes contractors for security or janitorial services, the contractor is supposed to rehire workers for at least 90 days after the transition.

When contacted by MarketWatch on Tuesday, Chiu said: “Elon Musk has a long history of flouting labor laws. While I’m not surprised this happened, I feel for those workers as well as all Twitter employees and contractors who have been laid off. We will be looking into this further.”

Miranda said 48 janitors in total are affected, 30 of whom were waiting to go back to work because many Twitter employees had been working from home and not as many janitors were needed.

San Francisco-based Twitter, whose communications team was reportedly almost entirely laid off at the beginning of November after Musk bought the company, has not returned a request for comment. Musk has cut about half of the company’s pre-acquisition workforce of 7,500 since he took over.

Also Tuesday, Ted Goldberg, a senior editor at KQED, San Francisco’s public radio station, tweeted that the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection is launching an investigation into news reported by Forbes that Twitter has set up bedrooms for employees at its headquarters.

“We need to make sure the building is being used as intended,” a representative of the department told KQED News.

Alex Tourk wants to build 2,000 tiny homes for San Francisco’s homeless population. And he wants your help to get it done.

The political operative turned public relations specialist is teaming up with the citizen volunteer organization RescueSF to get this idea off the ground, The Examiner has learned. The newly formed nonprofit is calling itself MyOwnLockandKey.org. the goal? Increase transitional housing options and get the homeless off the streets.

Tourk, who ran point on Project Homeless Connect for former Mayor Gavin Newsom, knows the landscape and he’s banking that his history of running campaigns and building political coalitions will help move the plan forward.

He’s going to need all that experience and then some, because this idea is going to run into some serious hurdles.

First off, where are you going to put all these tiny homes, also known as modular housing units in the homeless advocacy world? Tourk says he’s identified 50 parcels of land across San Francisco that could house modular housing, owned by The City, state, federal government and private entities, such as religious organizations.

I asked where these parcels were, and he told me they’re spread across San Francisco. And that’s where it’s going to get interesting.

As we all know, people feel strongly about homelessness. They want something done. But they don’t want it done in their backyards. Tourk says he has an answer. That’s where you come in. Over the next 20 months, Tourk and RescueSF plan to “organize a broad citywide coalition of 25,000 San Franciscans to support bringing modular/tiny home transitional supportive housing projects to sites throughout the City.”

Good luck with that. And I mean it. If anyone can pull it off, it’s probably Mr. Tourk. He’s a driven organizer. He could sell the Pope dope. Part of the plan will be to hold 500 house parties across The City, where neighborhood supporters could gather their friends to hear the pitch.

“I could be pollyannaish here, right? There could be people who are like, ‘What are you talking about? … Get them out of my neighborhood,’” said Tourk. “But you know what? I want to inspire people. That’s what true organizing is. It’s like selling a vision and getting people to buy into it. This idea that you’re going to keep dumping people in the tenderloin, in the Bayview, and this is going to somehow solve homelessness, just because it’s out of sight out of mind. If we really want to solve homelessness, we really want to make a dent in it, we all gotta participate, one way or another.”

OK, say you get the neighborhoods to buy in. Who’s going to provide the services needed? You can’t just give somebody a cabin and wish them luck. They’ll need services… and security.

Tourk believes The City is flush with cash (it is) and there are “a bevy of supportive services” available (um, not really). And he’s looking at the controversial nonprofit Urban Alchemy as a possible security solution.

OK. What about all the other nonprofits in town? The homeless industrial complex can be pretty territorial. Everyone wants to keep their piece of the funding under their own roof. On that front, Tourk figured the Coalition on Homelessness and the San Francisco Building Trades and Construction Council would be his biggest opponents. Both groups have traditionally opposed modular construction in favor of permanent housing.

But so far, Jennifer Friedenbach of the Coalition remains open to the idea and Rudy Gonzalez with the builders union is relatively supportive. Tourk says there are 1,300 union members who could benefit from building the 2,000 units proposed.

Funding may prove the biggest obstacle to MyOwnLockandKey. Tourk originally wanted to create a ballot measure that would make it possible to redirect some Prop. C money. (You know, the initiative that taxes the rich to help the homeless in SF) But that didn’t look politically expedient. Instead, his group wants to put this proposal in front of the Board of Supervisors and let them find the money. This could be Tourk’s Waterloo. Or Hamburger Hill. Many a dream has died in Room 250.

But this past week, the dream took a step toward reality. Not only is the group up and running, but they held a little party to kick things off. Tourk gathered a couple dozen of the biggest names in San Francisco’s homeless advocacy community at Civic Center Plaza to listen to his pitch and take a group photo.

“I picked this spot for a reason. And it really was three of them,” Tourk told the crowd. Turns out, George Moscone campaigned against the scourge of drugs and homelessness in the Plaza back in 1975. In 1988, this was ‘Camp Agnos,’ a homelessness tent encampment. And in 2004, Tourk and Judith Cain launched Project Homeless Connect on the same spot, spurring Tourk to say, “It made me realize that maybe my organizing skills were for something bigger than just electing politicians.”

“About a year ago, I met Mark (Nagel) and Laurie (Brooke), and these guys are doing amazing work at Rescue SF. They’re able to articulate a missing rung on the housing ladder, which is your transitional supportive, modular, tiny home construction. They are officially working with me as a policy arm of this foundation to help make sure we’re doing this appropriately, thoughtfully, with data and analysis. So again, today’s the beginning.”

Tourk points to existing, similar programs in Los Angeles, Oakland and Mountain View as his North Star. Not surprisingly, there were plenty of cheerleaders for his idea in the crowd at Civic Center Plaza.

“We’re very supportive of his idea,” said Brooke, co-founder of Rescue SF. “Having Alex come on board with his campaign experience and messaging experience, this could really take it to the next level.” She and her co-founder, Nagel pointed to an existing site at 33 Gough as their pilot.

The Examiner’s Sydney Johnson reported on the opening of that location, revealing that the site currently holds 30 cabins, with plans to expand to 70.

“Each unit is carefully and fashionably designed with details such as living plants, bookshelves and artwork, and features a bed, air conditioning, a desk and electricity,” Johnson wrote. “Bathrooms, showers and an eventual computer lab are all part of the development, which will get a wrap-around mural before the opening of all 70 units later this spring.” Generally speaking, residents would live in these cabins for months, rather than years. They’re intended to be a stepping stone rather than a permanent solution.

But the site also only has a temporary lease. The developer wants to build on the site. That’s why movable units are important in this plan, Tourk argues.

“It’s about time that somebody really did something, stepped up and helped,” said Gwendolyn Westbrook, executive director of Mother Brown’s Dining Room, a social service group that runs a safe sleeping site in the Bayview. “Transitional housing is what they need.”

Here, here.

It was a lovely, sunny day in San Francisco. There was a feeling of hope in the air. Many of these people have been fighting on behalf of the homeless for years and years. And they’re not going to quit.

As I walked away from the gathering, I passed the safe sleeping site run by Urban Alchemy near City Hall. Many of the sites appeared empty inside the fence. Across the street, dozens if not hundreds of people milled about in search of a fix.

They seemed a lot more interested in heroin than housing.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A San Francisco woman is thanking quick-thinking neighbors who saved her life after she was brazenly choked and tackled to the ground. Those individuals are now being commanded for their actions by community leaders and police.

“I noticed him yelling in the background. That’s when he ran after me,” says Wendy, who requested we only use her first name. The 28-year-old was soft-spoken and nervous speaking about what happened to her Friday afternoon in Visitacion Valley, not far from Bayshore. That man who was yelling at her, suddenly attacked.

Surveillance video used in the police investigation shows Wendy on her back. You can hear her blood-curdling scream for help.

“He grabbed me, started choking me down. I couldn’t yell after that since he was choking me and he had me on the ground,” said Wendy.

Wendy, who is the mother of a 6-year-old, thought she was going to die and blacked out.

“I was just thinking of my family, my son, praying to God, that someone would come out a see me,” said Wendy.

Video shows a man, not necessarily seeing her, but definitely hearing her cry for help, running in her direction. That, according to police, scared the suspect away, saying his quick actions “made a world of difference.”

Wendy agrees.

“They’re lifesavers. I really appreciate it, I don’t know how to thank them for what they did,” said Wendy.

I spoke to the man who heard Wendy scream and rushed over to help with his neighbor. He didn’t want to go on camera, out of fear for his safety. But says he was put on this earth to help others.

Supervisor Shamann Walton, who developed a public safety plan for his district to address crimes like this, also commended the neighbors for jumping into action.

A statement sent to ABC7 News reads in part, “We commend our Visitacion Valley neighbors, who jumped into action to save and assist the victim in a timely manner. Our office is committed to helping the victim and all victims of crime to connect to any services that they may need following these types of senseless ordeals.”

Wendy, who miraculously wasn’t seriously hurt, says until she saves up enough to buy a car – she’ll continue to walk. But with precautions. She plans to purchase pepper spray to protect herself from now on and recommends all women be aware of their surroundings while walking alone.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A luxury senior living center is coming to San Francisco in 2022. The apartment complex made headlines recently, as the cost to live there can run as high as $27,000 a month.

“It’s going to be a big community. We range from independent, to assistant living, to memory care. We dedicated a support and care team trained through the Mayo clinic,” said Michael Pounsberry, Coterie Cathedral Hill’s General Manager.

Located at 1001 Van Ness Ave the Coterie Cathedral Hill luxury senior complex is three months from opening its doors.

RELATED: Rent will cost up to $27,000 a month at new and luxurious senior living complex in SF

“Welcome to Coterie Cathedral Hill. We are right now standing in our 3,500 square foot living room and library space. It’s a beautifully designed space with hardwood floors, white oak throughout and accents of brass and leather,” said Tansy Mak, Related Companies Design Manager.

Waiting to move into one of the 208 units is Jim Meehan.

Luz Pena: “What was it about this specific community that attracted you here?”

Jim Meehan: “I’m in excellent health, but I live alone and I’ve reached the age where it’s sort of prudent for me to have assistance available, if I need it. I’m also looking forward to being part of a community of people.”

Residents will have access to an on-site nursing and wellness team.

“A lot of safety programs here at the property as well. We even have a watch called ‘Care Predict’ so residents will have a two-way communication should they need any assistance,” said Pounsberry.

WATCH: Inside a $27 million San Francisco mansion

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – A San Francisco man says he was held at gunpoint while washing his car, then robbed and imprisoned in a bathroom with his family.

Now he’s doing more than just sharing his story. He and his family took a proactive approach to security for their entire neighborhood.

RELATED: San Franciscans Are Concerned About Public Safety, 70% Say Quality of Life has deteriorated

It was a typical Friday night for the man in his forties who asked not to reveal his name as he washed his car at his house near McLaren Park.

A surveillance video from across the street shows a vehicle lapping the block at least four times before the incident happened. A gun is seen in the suspect’s hand as he approaches the victim, who drops his bucket and is forced into the garage.

“They took me to my house, where my family took us all to the bathroom,” says the man behind the sunglasses and face mask.

EXCLUSIVE: San Francisco couple forcibly robbed after being chased home

When two suspects made their demands, “They said where is the money, where is the money?” and stole thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry, and the husband’s wife and two daughters endured what they believed to be a bleak end.

“I thought either someone would be shot or someone would call the police, like our neighbors, and it would be a hostage situation,” said her 11-year-old daughter.

The man took off his glasses to reveal the deep bruises around his eye and stated, “They just pressed my face against the wall to let me know this was a real situation.”

The rest of the family was not physically injured.

Even so, this husband and father are aware that the emotional burden is much higher and burst into tears for a moment.

This story doesn’t stop there.

RELATED: Frustration Over “No Impact” For Organized Crime In SF

The father and 11-year-old daughter went out the next day and met with every single neighbor and left letters describing what happened to them.

“When you see a neighbor and a child tell them what happened … there is more heart. They take it to heart immediately,” says the man, who believes that a police officer who heeded the same warning Intimidates neighbors.

The family believes the immediate abandonment of their property kept them alive, and for that they are grateful.

“If they want your belongings, don’t let them harm you or your family or anything that is irreplaceable,” the daughter said.

The San Francisco man speaks out to show how neighborly love, like sharing a warning or surveillance video, can make a difference.

“I love the city, but the city is changing. Be careful. Be vigilant, if you have to wash your cars, do it with a neighbor.”

The SFPD continues to search for the suspects.
