In January, dressed in a crisp white shirt and slacks, with a tidy, consciously androgynous hairstyle, Christina Ku, a director at NTT Docomo Ventures, the Silicon Valley investment arm of the Japanese telecom conglomerate Docomo, gestured to the whiteboard behind her as she took her team through a breakdown of her investments and exits. Ku spoke confidently and authoritatively, unfazed when one colleague flickered out of existence, and two more arrived outfitted in Colonel Sanders-esque suits. All in a day’s work when you’re meeting in the metaverse, she says.

There’s been massive investment in the metaverse, even before Facebook rebranded itself as Meta in October 2021. The global metaverse space was valued at $38.85 billion in 2021 by market data platform extra, which estimates that number will balloon 22% in 2022 and rise to $678.8 billion by 2030. “Investors [are] pouring capital into the space,” says Fred Schebesta, a futurist and cofounder of Hive Empire Capital, a blockchain investment fund. “We’ve never seen such a rapid explosion of growth.” Ku, an investor in the space, has been trying to move all of her meetings—and some reluctant colleagues and entrepreneurs—to the metaverse, which she defines as a digital world interaction and immersion.”

Ku’s been fascinated with the potential of the metaverse for years. In many ways, it began with Pokemon, she says. Like millions, in 2016 Ku became obsessed with Niantic’s Pokémon Go mobile game. She snagged a rare Koffing in Tokyo’s Haneda airport, a couple of Psyducks in Austin, and hunted down a Mudkip during a crypto conference in Croatia.

Her San Francisco neighborhood was a hotbed for rare Pokémon, and “friends visited just so we could catch them,” she recalls. This augmented reality experience across multiple physical spaces demonstrated a wider application for technology that had previously been relegated to the “hardcore gamer” sphere. The rollout of Virtual YouTuber concerts heightened her excitement. In March 2020, she watched, enthralled, as Kizuna AI streamed a concert in 5G, noticing how thousands of fans responded to the VTuber in realtime. “The way that realities and communities merged was fascinating,” Ku says.

Ku’s investments in early to mid-stage startups reflect her excitement—her portfolio includes WaveXR, which develops VR music concerts for celebrities; Light Field Lab, which designs holographic hardware; and Arcturus Studios, which develops 3D video capture tools.

Her metaverse all hands-meeting in January was not without hiccups—some of her 15 or so colleagues who attended struggled with the user interface of their newly issued headsets, and with navigating around Meta’s Horizon Workrooms. But Ku still found it beneficial. “We are investing in the metaverse, so it makes sense that we would eat our own dog food,” she says, admitting that Workrooms’s avatar fashion was “limited” and that her headset grew uncomfortable during the three-hour session.

Even with these limitations, she says the metaverse is especially attractive in a business context. “Everybody was democratized,” she says. The relative conformity of people’s avatars made it easier to “focus on what they were saying, and how they interacted with you.” In Ku’s opinion, the unconscious biases so inherent in most interactions—age, sex, height, etc.—were noticeably absent.

She’s been pushing business contacts to have meetings in the virtual world. A couple of months ago, Ku toured an NFT gallery with the founder of a stealth startup; both parties logged on via their VR headsets. “Walking” through the gallery together brought the concept to life, she says. “I wouldn’t have been as excited if he’d just shown me a presentation.” But despite her prodding, she’s had relatively few metaverse meetings—even with metaverse-pitching startups. She says that mostly they send her video demos or Decentraland links.

Ku finds the widespread reluctance to meet in the metaverse frustrating. If startups were able to pivot their pitches to Zoom during COVID-19, why not the metaverse? It would streamline her whole process. “I can meet 10 CEOs in the same [amount of] time” it would take to meet one in the real world, she says.

In her metaverse evangelism, she’s even tried loaning VR headsets to some of her VC friends at other firms, but most won’t even unbox them. “They’re uncomfortable because they don’t understand it,” Ku says.

But I’m game for a virtual meeting. In March, I boot up my PC, update my Oculus Rift drivers, and head over to Rec Room, a social VR game, to meet Ku for a follow-up interview. The bright primary colors of the Rec Room universe feel dizzying—we’re here because I couldn’t get VRChat or Spatial, two popular meetup spaces—to play nice with my setup.

For my avatar, I opt for shoulder-length brown hair instead of my regular blond, a tidy mustache, and a fitted red dress with a Peter Pan collar. Then I wander around the main lobby waiting for Ku to arrive, stumbling across a plushie furry-esque store, a laser tag arena, and a bunch of kid-size avatars that throw Frisbees at my head while humming a song from Encanto.

“Where are you?” I text Ku, and a message appears on my avatar’s virtual watch, teleporting me to her “dorm room.” The sudden locomotion makes me queasy. Ku’s room is generic, auto-filled with a wastepaper basketball hoop, bunk bed, and avatar mirror. Ku’s avatar, outfitted in an orange-and-white basketball jersey, with sweatbands on her wrists, looks around the space and laughs. “I don’t see dorm rooms being a part of business interactions,” she says. “But it’s roomy.” I see what she means. I’m just glad everything has stopped spinning.

We stand in front of her mirror as she walks me through the avatar design process. “One of the appeals of the metaverse is that you can have different identities, different personalities, different personas,” she says, cycling through an array of skins: a sports fan, a world traveler, a van lifer. “They’re all different versions of yourself. All of these personas could be me.”

Of course, it’s still early days for this whole space—and before we get better tech, a bunch of housekeeping needs to be worked out: compliance, 5G connectivity, and content moderation being the most pressing, she says. Then there are the innovations that level up the game; Ku has met startups developing touch and smell metaverse add-ons. “This adds to the multilayered sense of the metaverse,” she says.

Even as more companies head back to the office, Ku says the global return to IRL interactions has no bearing on this trend, noting, “People have gotten a taste of what is possible.” In many ways, the Great Resignation is proof of people’s desire to keep—or keep elements of—this new normal. Ku says we’re not at the metaverse inflection point yet but it’s coming; she predicts buying a headset will become as commonplace as buying a laptop or phone. “People are changing the way they think about personal interactions,” she says. “There will always be a place for in-person, but the metaverse can remove a lot of that. This is the future.”

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 8, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Governing Board of the San Francisco Health Plan (SFHP) has announced that Yolanda Richardsoncurrently the Secretary of the California Government Operations Agency, will succeed John F. Grgurina, Jr.as Chief Executive Officer, effective April 4, 2022.

Richardson was selected after a rigorous nationwide search, facilitated by recruiting firm Russell Reynolds Associates, which included extensive interviews with SFHP Governing Board members. Mr. Grgurina supported the Board in its search to ensure the new CEO would uphold SFHP’s mission to improve health outcomes of the diverse san francisco communities through successful partnerships.

“Finding someone committed to SFHP’s mission and culture to support our members, the safety net providers of san francisco and our staff were the most important factors to me.” said John F. Grgurina, Jr. “Yolanda is a true advocate of affordable health care for all and has had a lifelong commitment to service with proven capabilities to lead through extraordinary times; I am confident she will guide SFHP through its next stage of evolution.”

Secretary Richardson has more than 20 years of healthcare leadership experience, including her current role as Governor Newsom’s Secretary of the California Government Operations Agency, leading 11 state departments and offices essential to the effective administration of California state government. In Jan 2021, Governor Newsom called on Yolanda to help increase the pace of vaccine administration statewide and ensure vaccines were distributed equitably. She launched a “Get Out the Vaccine” campaign in partnership with UCLA and community organizations statewide to promote vaccinations, knocking on more than three million doors to help Californians access the COVID-19 vaccine. For her wide-ranging work during the pandemic, Yolanda was named “Public Administrator of the Year” in 2021 by the American Society of Public Administration (Sacramento Chapter) and one of five “Warrior Women” leading the fight against COVID-19 in 2021 by California Women Lead.

Prior to joining the Agency, Secretary Richardson helped found Covered California, one of the nation’s most successful health insurance exchanges. Beginning in 2011, she helped grow the organization to become one of the nation’s most successful Affordable Care Act exchanges. By the time she left the role of Chief Deputy Executive Director in 2016, Richardson’s efforts had helped enroll millions of Californians in health coverage and cut the state’s rate of the uninsured by half.

“I am honored to be selected to lead SFHP, a strong, innovative organization with a compassionate mission and an outstanding network of health care providers, staff and members,” said Secretary Richardson. “I am excited to return to SFHP where I once served as COO and as CEO, I will continue to build on SFHP’s innovative culture and advance its vision into the future.”

“There are no words to describe the remarkable impact that John F. He has shepherded SFHP through a remarkable decade and a half, with an extraordinary increase in the member population. Although he will be sorely missed, we wish him nothing but the best on his well-deserved retirement,” said SFHP Governing Board Chair, Dr. Steven Fugaro, MD. “Secretary Richardson has proven to be a dynamic leader and the Board strongly believes that she is the right person to carry on Mr. Grgurina’s legacy of optimizing the MediCal experience for our Members, Providers and Team Members.
The loved ones of a Bank of America executive found beaten to death in her home are urging that her alleged killer be charged with special circumstances charges as the Los Angeles County Attorney General has criticized his progressive policies and a faced with a recall attempt.

Michelle Avan, 48, had recently been promoted to a senior vice president position when she was killed by her former boyfriend, colleague Anthony Turner, authorities said. She was found at her home in the Reseda neighborhood of Los Angeles on August 5, 2021.

Avan’s loved ones are frustrated that District Attorney George Gascon’s office has not filed special circumstances charges against Turner and says he could potentially be paroled after 10 years if convicted.

Michelle Avan, 48, was allegedly beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend. Her family is urging prosecutors to charge him with crimes under special circumstances.
(Courtesy of the Avan family)

“He’s entitled to everything that a killer shouldn’t be eligible for,” Avan’s brother Patrick Miller told Fox News.

Turner faces first-degree murder and burglary charges. He was released on detention days after his arrest. Fox News has contacted Gascon’s office.

Avan’s relatives plan to gather outside the prosecutor’s office on Thursday to urge him to seek more serious charges.

Authorities said Turner broke into Avan’s home on August 3 and killed her before leaving the next day. Her body was discovered by her son, Trevon Avan.

Gascon has been criticized since taking office in December 2020 for his controversial policies, which include not seeking bail for some criminal suspects, refusing to prosecute certain crimes and not seeking increased sentences for others.

Opponents are in the midst of a second recall attempt against the progressive prosecutor whose efforts to re-imagine how crimes are handled in California’s most populous county have drawn the ire of other district attorneys, law enforcement officials and die-hard crime advocates.

A previous recall failed to gather enough signatures from registered voters. Recall supporters have said that crime has risen since Gascon took office, although crime began to rise in the months leading up to his election, as well as in other cities across the country.

The only criticism they all voice is that Gascon, a former San Francisco district attorney and deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, has abandoned crime victims in favor of protecting criminals’ rights.

Desiree Andrade, whose son Julien was murdered in 2018, is part of the committee leading the recall against him.

<img decoding="async" src="https://a57.foxnews.com/static.foxnews.com/foxnews.com/content/uploads/2022/01/640/320/Michelle-Avan.jpg?ve=1&tl=1" alt="Michelle Avan attends the 48th NAACP Image Awards at Pasadena Civic Auditorium on February 11, 2017 in Pasadena, California.

“In the case of my son, they all faced special circumstances… and these will be dismissed. They all faced the death penalty or life without parole, and now they face only 25 years of the possibility of parole,” she told Fox News. “It’s a slap in the face for me. So I can see the Avan family being upset about this. There are no more consequences.”

Some of Gascon’s own prosecutors have also publicly opposed his policies.

“George Gascón says facts are important. They do,” Jonathan Hatami tweeted Monday. “Homicides and shootings are at a 15-year high in LA. Releasing criminals on $0 bail, defunding the police, refusing to prosecute crimes, issuing blanket policies, and failing to hold people accountable are not reforms and only lead to violence.”

The Avan family hopes prosecutors will bring the most serious charges in Turner’s case, but they’re not optimistic.

“I don’t think his policies are designed for the people he was elected for,” Miller said, adding that he believes Gascon’s policies are politically motivated. “We expect justice if something happens. It enables you to make justice seem not the norm.”

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – Union Square in San Francisco is losing another major retailer, with DSW – the Designer Shoe Warehouse – being the newest store in the neighborhood to shut down for good.

“Things I used to know aren’t here anymore,” said Linda Hill, who was visiting from New Jersey.

“It’s a lot sadder than it was before COVID,” said Judy Keith, a visitor from Texas.

Marisa Rodriguez, the new executive director of the Union Square Alliance – formerly known as the Union Square Business Improvement District – hopes to change that perception.

“It’s always disappointing when a cornerstone of our community has to be closed. As far as I know, they are closing more than just their location here in San Francisco, ”said Rodriguez.

She agrees that there is a problem with the image of Union Square that she attributes primarily to the pandemic and the toll it has taken on tourism and retail. It is Rodriguez’s goal to address the image problem.

“That perception will soon go away,” she said. “Union Square is ready and waiting for visitors. We have so much to offer. “

The holiday season has already begun with the return of the traditional Christmas tree and ice rink to Union Square.

“It will be lit on November 18th,” she said. “People love the ice rink. In contrast to last year, when everything was closed, it is open. “

She also noted that some companies are moving in while others are moving in.

Omega, the watch store, has just opened in Union Square, one of nine upcoming openings and reopenings, according to Rodriguez.

“These range from restaurants, wine bars, retail stores – we even have a mattress store,” she said. “We are very excited about all of this.”

Perception won’t change overnight. But Rodriguez believes it will continue to move in the right direction when people venture back into the world and relive Union Square.

SAN FRANCISCO – Dick Tidrow, a former Major League pitcher and longtime front office member of the San Francisco Giants, has died. He was 74.

The Giants announced his death on Wednesday on behalf of the Tidrow family. He died unexpectedly on Saturday in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

“Our entire organization is heartbroken at the news of Dick’s death,” said Larry Baer, Giants president and CEO. “So much of our success over the past three decades is directly related to Dick’s contributions. We will all miss him very much and our thoughts are with Mari Jo and his entire family during this difficult time. “

Tidrow set up parts of 13 major league seasons for the Indians, Yankees, Cubs, White Sox and Mets. The 6-foot-4 right-handed man had a career record of 100-94 with a 3.68 ERA over 620 appearances with 138 starts.

Tidrow most recently served as senior advisor to the Giants to the president of the baseball business. He spent 28 seasons in half a dozen roles with the Giants after joining the franchise as a major league scout prior to the 1994 season.

The former pitcher’s leadership was vital during the Giants’ three World Series championship seasons in 2010, ’12 and ’14. The 2010 championship was the first for the franchise since moving west in 1958.

“Dick was a unique and special person whose influence and impact was legendary throughout the game, and whose fingerprints are all over our three World Series trophies,” said Brian Sabean, executive vice president and senior advisor for the Giants. “On a personal level, we have shared some incredible ups and downs and I am forever grateful for his 40 years of friendship and support.”

Before returning to his native San Francisco, Tidrow worked as a Special Assignment Scout for the Yankees from 1985 to 1993.

“Crushing! We lost another great baseball man!” Former Giants infielder Kevin Frandsen posted on Twitter. “The ‘ninja’ was so influential to all of us. His random moments when he showed up, maybe said a few words that might help you, a few words that you might not want to hear at the time. But he was ALWAYS HONEST! “

Tidrow was born in San Francisco on May 14, 1947. A retired Marine, he attended high school and college in Hayward, a suburb of East Bay, graduating from Mount Eden High in 1965 and Chabot Junior College two years later.

He leaves behind his wife Mari Jo, three children – Andy, Matt and Richelle – and a grandchild, Trista.

From Dr. Marcy Adelman-

Dr. Karyn Skultety, Executive Director of Openhouse, will step down from her position at the end of May. In her statement to the community, she said it was a family decision to move to Colorado. She wrote: “COVID-19 has forced us all to ask questions about ourselves, our families and our lives. It also reminded us of how quickly things change. My family and I are privileged in many ways, and we have managed to maintain that perspective even amid the tremendous challenges of the past year. Nevertheless, I am shaped by this pandemic. I’ve seen my children fight. I went through a COVID-19 fear with a family member that highlights my role as caregiver for my parents in old age. “

She continued, “I love being your manager. I love and call me at this time by the person I am outside of my work: a woman, mother, daughter, sister, and a LGBTQ + selected family member. “

Tim Sweeney, co-chair of the board of directors of Openhouse, said, “We are grateful for Karyn’s determined and competent leadership over the past four years, which has kept the organization beyond the strength, self-sufficiency and sustainable model of care includes embrace this transition. While we are saddened that she is leaving our family and community, we fully support her need to focus on the changing needs of her immediate and extended family. “

In the four years that Dr. Skultety was at Openhouse, she reshaped and reinvigorated the organization by advancing and empowering seniors, expanding services, creating new models of care, and delivering the kind of leadership that creates an environment where people feel seen and heard and cared around. Out of gratitude, the Openhouse board member honors Karyn by calling the balcony of the Openhouse Community Activity Center in 75 Laguna as Dr. Karyn Skultety Balcony.

Under Karyn’s leadership, open house seniors are honored and celebrated for their many accomplishments, and encouraged and supported to lead in all aspects of the community. Karyn elevates LGBTQ + seniors at every opportunity and urges the larger LGBTQ + community and beyond to do the same. Karyn said to me for the San Francisco Bay Times, “Our job and mission is to look at our LGBTQ + elders and let the world see the individuality, beauty and wisdom associated with age and living as who we really are. I look forward to welcoming a successor who will continue to focus on the voices and experiences of the LGBTQ + seniors we serve. “

Dr. Skultety also introduced racial justice training for all board members and employees. Karyn understands that it is up to leadership to set the bar by being proactive and using organizational resources to create a space where everyone can thrive.

Dr. Skultety led the organization in collaboration with Mercy Housing through the construction of the Openhouse Community Center at 75 Laguna and the 79 new residential units at 95 Laguna. Together with the 42 apartments in 55 Laguna, these 79 apartments form a total of 121 apartments in which LGBTQ + seniors are welcome – one of the largest LGBTQ + senior housing complexes in the country.

While Karyn was completing the open-house campus at Laguna 55-95, she also advanced the organization by providing services to the community. During her time as managing director, Dr. Skultety the number of LGBTQ + seniors available to more than 3000 parishioners. This includes both open house residents and older LGBTQ + adults from across the city.

The variety and number of services has grown exponentially, with programs that offer assistance in securing housing, making it easier to navigate the often confusing care system for older adults and adults with disabilities, to the voluntary program for home visitors, and a cornucopia of classes for fun , Conviviality and education.

In collaboration with On-Lok, Dr. Skultety is also the country’s first community-based adult daytime program developed for and with LGBTQ + elders. This is a much-needed program that includes services for seniors who are physically and cognitively disabled.

The pandemic delayed the opening of the Openhouse Community Center at 75 Laguna and thus the opening of this innovative program. The grand opening will hopefully take place sometime later this year. If this is the case, the day program for adults in the community will be put into operation and the Dr. Karyn Skultety Balcony opens – a fitting tribute to an extraordinary leader from a grateful congregation.

Dr. Marcy Adelman, LGBTQ + Long Longevity Psychologist and Policy Advisor, oversees aging in the community. She is a member of the California Commission on Aging, the board of directors of the Alzheimer Association of Northern California, the California Master Plan on Aging Equity Advisory Committee, and the San Francisco Dignity Fund Oversight and Advisory Committee. She is a co-founder of Openhouse, the only nonprofit in San Francisco dedicated solely to the health and wellbeing of older LGBTQ + adults.
