Miami is smack-dab in the middle of summer — and it’s not the hot-girl kind. Temperatures have hovered in the high 80s and low 90s for days, and the humidity makes it feel like the 100s. The forecast shows no sign of the mercury dipping any time soon.

On top of all that, Miamians are feeling the heat when the electric bill arrives every month, providing yet another reason to sweat — as if we need it.

Florida Power & Light (FPL) warned in May that power bills were going up this year by as much as 18 percent owing to pandemic-induced supply-chain disruptions, and while Miamians struggled to balance costs with air-conditioning needs, HVAC (heating , ventilation, and air-conditioning) professionals from around the world will descend upon the warm, moist Magic City to discuss the future of the industry.

July 20-21 brings the RefriAmericas conference to the Miami Airport Convention Center, where industry experts from Latin America, the Caribbean, and beyond will exchange ideas on how to implement more efficient cooling systems amid rising global temperatures.

“The HVAC industry is very aware of the changes happening in the climate from to human-made gases and activities, and we’re trying out best to remedy that on the domestic side,” Max Jaramillo, founder of Latin Press and organizer of RefriAmericas , tells New Times.

As the A/C experts put their heads together on how to keep the planet from overheating while keeping people cool, they have some tips for Miamians looking to beat the heat and not break the bank.

“Turning off your air conditioners during the day is not recommended,” Ernesto Porras, a mechanical engineer and HVAC consultant, tells New Times in Spanish. “With the humidity so high, if you turn it on at the end of the day, the job of recooling the house will take a lot of energy.”

Porras also recommends something that might seem obvious but that most people might ignore: maintenance.

“The most basic thing people can do is make sure their units are well maintained. Clean the fans and change the filters monthly,” Porras says.

Porras and Jaramillo agree that a dirty A/C unit will have to work almost twice as hard as a clean one to keep a house cool — and your electric bill will reflect that.

One less-intuitive tip Porras advocates is to turn off and unplug electrical appliances while they’re not in use. He says leaving a TV or computer screen on during the day will radiate heat, and though you probably won’t be able to fry an egg on either of them, they contribute to the overall temperature inside your home.

Other simple fixes include installing curtains to cover windows during the day to block sunlight and keeping your thermostat a few degrees higher than you normally would during the day so the A/C isn’t working overtime while the sun is out.

And, if you can afford it, both Porras and Jaramillo recommend installing newer A/C units if your house is running on old machinery.

“Units in the older apartments in Little Havana where I live are probably using twice as much energy,” Jaramillo says. “By investing in a more efficient, newer unit, which will cost money upfront, you could waste less energy in the long run and save.”

San Francisco County has the highest COVID-19 case rate of any other county in California with a seven-day average of 13 cases per 100,000 residents, state data showed on Tuesday. By comparison, Los Angeles is reporting 5 cases per 100,000 residents. And San Francisco isn’t the only Bay Area spot sitting at the top of the list. All counties in the region except Solano have among the highest rates in the state.

But multiple experts say this news isn’t alarming, and does not warrant any policy changes. Despite the region’s ranking, cases are extremely low compared to what they were amid the winter surge when the city’s seven-day average soared above 250 cases per 100,000 at the peak.

“No I’m not concerned,” said Dr. George Rutherford, director of UCSF’s Prevention and Public Health Group. “I don’t think it’s any reason to go back to putting the brakes on and our masks back on. We have lots of hospital capacity.”

“I am not too concerned as our hospitals remain eerily quiet — only 2 patients with COVID hospitalized today at the main UCSF Health hospital on Parnassus, compared to close to a 100 in this hospital on January 25,” UCSF infectious diseases expert Dr. Peter Chin-Hong wrote in an email.

“I don’t anticipate any lockdowns, and I am not even sure any restrictions will be re-implemented as long as our hospitals remain protected.” Chin Hong continued. “There may be disruptions in the community in the workplace and schools as people need to be taken out to isolate for at least 5 days if infected. Is it interesting that countries like the UK, Denmark and South Africa have removed the mandate for a compulsory Isolation when infected and this softens the potential disruptions to life in this way.”

While San Francisco’s case rate may not be concerning, you may still be wondering why it’s higher than other places. UCSF’s Dr. Monica Gandhi believes a primary reason is the city’s robust testing apparatus.

“We do a lot of testing in San Francisco with mass community testing sites established via a collaboration between UCSF and the San Francisco Department of Public Health,” Gandhi said. “This allows us to detect slight increases in cases better than other counties in the setting of BA.2 (now 72% of strains in the US) and with increased movement of the population.”

Rutherford agreed that testing is playing into the city’s higher rate and added that the city is a medical hub and people are coming to the city for care that requires testing. “Theoretically, positive tests should be reported back to the county of residence, but that might not always be happening,” he said.

The highly transmissible BA.2 variant — that’s spreading at a time when more people are traveling and society is reopening — is another likely factor, said Chin-Hong.

“A combination of spring break travel, visitors from lots of other parts of the country and world (Asia, Europe), reopening and the resumption of large indoor events like sports and concerts,” Chin-Hong wrote in an email. “This is all fueled by BA.2, which is more transmissible in a city that is compact. There may be more susceptible people to infection in San Francisco and the Bay Area (compared to other parts of the state) who haven’t gotten Breakthrough infection with BA.1 and whose immunity to infection has waned. Strategies that have been used in the past to avoid infection may not work quite as well with COVID.”

Could the Bay Area be at the start of a BA.2-driven surge?

The experts that SFGATE talked to all said they don’t expect cases to skyrocket.

“There’s going to be some sort of a sawtooth pattern and it’s not surprising that things are going to be up and down,” said Rutherford. “We’ll see some clusters and bumps from BA2, but I think the overall pattern is it’s going to broaden the base of that curve as it comes down.”

Chin-Hong emphasized that the region has high vaccination rates and this combined with immunity people infected with COVID gained during the original omicron surge “will provide enough immunity ammunition to protect people from getting seriously ill and so protect our hospital resources so we can continue to take care of the spectrum of non-COVID illnesses without interruption.”

Walgreens said it was closing some stores in San Francisco due to an increase in retail thefts.

Police data obtained from the Chronicle did not show high rates of shoplifting reports in the shops that were closing.

An expert said people leaving town during the pandemic could harm Walgreens’ business.

Walgreens announced Tuesday that it would close five of its San Francisco locations for “organized retail crime” Saturday.

While the report says the chain experienced retail theft, other factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and store oversaturation were cited as potential factors in the decision to close stores.

Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso said retail theft at its San Francisco locations had increased five times the chain’s average in recent months, SFGate reported.

However, the data from the San Francisco Police Department received from the Chronicle contradicts claims made by Walgreens, as one of the stores slated to close since 2018 has only reported 23 shoplifting incidents per month since 2018.

“Organized retail crime remains a challenge for retailers across San Francisco, and we are not immune to it,” Caruso told SFGate. “To combat this problem, we have increased our investments in security measures in stores across the city over this time to 46 times our chain average to create a safe environment.”

San Francisco Mayor London Breed dismissed Walgreens’ reasons for closing the shops.

“They say (shoplifting is) the main reason, but I also think when a place is not generating revenue and when it’s saturated – SF has a lot of Walgreens locations across the city – so I think there are other factors coming into play “she told reporters last week.

The story goes on

Dean Preston, supervisor for San Francisco’s 5th District, which will be affected by a store closure, said the pharmacy chain was “out of the community” and had “long planned to close,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“Weird that some would be so offended that I would suggest that a huge corporate chain shut down retail locations for the very reason they told investors they were going to shut down, rather than the reasons outlined in their external PR are specified, ”said Preston in a tweet on Friday.

In a 2019 filing by the Security and Exchange Commission, Walgreens announced it would launch a Transformational Cost Management Program that would close 200 stores in the US to save $ 1.5 billion annually through 2022 in spending.

A May study published by Stanford economist Nicholas Bloom found that 15% of San Francisco residents left and did not return during the pandemic, which the Chronicle says could explain Walgreens’ dwindling customer base in the city.

San Francisco has relatively high rates of property crime, which according to the Chronicle, criminal justice researcher Magnus Lofstrom may be due in part to the Bay Area’s enormous income equality.

Walgreens did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

OAKLAND (KPIX) – The COVID positivity rate has fallen again in California, with hospital admissions falling in many parts of the state, including the Bay Area.

In fact, it might not be long before the region is back to where it was in May and June.

CONTINUE READING: San Jose opens first city-approved RV site for the homeless amid neighbors protests

“The models show us that we will be at a low level by mid to late September, again at a low level of cases; the pleasantly low values that we had for so long, ”said Dr. Monica Gandhi, UCSF Infectious Disease Expert.

Thanks to high vaccination rates and some extra precautionary measures, the Bay Area is leaving the delta rise. It is extremely good news that Gandhi fears he is getting lost in a barrage of different headlines about the state of the pandemic.

“I think we have mixed messages where people talk a lot about breakthroughs,” explains Gandhi. “But David Leonhardt did a really great article in the New York Times this morning. He really said your risk of breakthrough depends on whether you are in a place with low or high infection rates. Makes perfect sense. “

“You just have to look at what happened in Florida and Texas and the South to say, ‘This could have been us,’ right? If we had had lower vaccination rates, ”said UCSF epidemiologist George Rutherford. “We have achieved a lot with this.”

CONTINUE READING: USGS: 7.0 magnitude earthquake hits the Mexican coast near Acapulco

Rutherford says Delta has uncovered the risk of parts of the population being exposed, noting that there are still corners of the region – and age groups – where more needs to be done.

“We have to work to improve our vaccination protection,” said Rutherford. “We have to anticipate when pediatric vaccines will be available, children 5-11, which will hopefully be sometime in October.”

There’s another reason why it would be a great achievement to overcome Delta. Many experts consider the variant to be so transferable that it simply cannot become contagious. If so, the virus may have hit its best.

“As soon as people get more and more immunity, no other virus can prevail,” said Gandhi. “So it’s the only terrible silver lining for Delta; it affects a lot of people and leads to a lot of immunity. “

MORE NEWS: High tech defense for homeowners in forest fire areas uses drones, 3D

“Monica is right about 110% of the time. So I think she’s probably right, ”said Rutherford. “I don’t see any big new mutations coming down the pike.”

San Francisco may be the first major American city to achieve herd immunity to the coronavirus, experts say.

San Francisco is still recording a low number of coronavirus cases, around 13.7 per day, said Dr. George Rutherford, professor of epidemiology at the University of California at San Francisco, but they don’t seem to be getting enough foothold in the population to cause major outbreaks.

“This is what herd immunity looks like,” said Rutherford. “You will have isolated cases, but they will not spread.”

Health officials still disagree on what percentage of the population needs to be immune to Covid-19 in order to achieve the much-touted “herd immunity” status when so many people have antibodies to the virus that it is not far about the virus can spread community.

Throughout the pandemic, vaccination goals to achieve herd immunity have been a moving goal, according to a briefing from the Yale School of Medicine, with experts initially estimating that if 60 to 70% of the population were immune, the virus would be difficult to spread . With multiple variants floating around, some of which are more contagious, estimates are rising. Many experts now estimate that herd immunity is achieved when 80 to 90 percent of the residents are vaccinated.

San Francisco was close to that goal. Nearly 80% of San Francisco residents eligible for the coronavirus vaccine have had at least one vaccination, and 68% are fully vaccinated, according to the city health department. Among the total population, Asians and Pacific islanders have vaccination rates even higher than the city average, statistics show, while the black population lags behind by about 16 percentage points.

Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a UCSF deputy dean specializing in infectious diseases, believes San Francisco already has enough residents with antibodies, considering those who have received immunity from the coronavirus to achieve herd immunity. But he said the virus is unlikely to ever go away completely in the US.

“I hope people still go out and get vaccinated and not rest on their laurels,” he said. “The virus will always be something to think about.”

San Francisco has several advantages in its pursuit of herd immunity, noted Rutherford. The city has few children compared to other places, so a larger percentage of residents are eligible for the vaccine. The population was thrilled with following the Covid safety measures and finding the vaccine. And it has compact geography with a dense community spanning 47 square miles that has allowed teams of health workers to go door-to-door to reach closings and others who may be struggling to get vaccinated.

“San Francisco has developed a national model for equitable distribution of vaccines,” said Mary Ellen Carroll, director of the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management, in a statement announcing the program last month. “The door-to-door vaccine and delivering this life-saving service to the elderly and the disabled who are at home will help get San Francisco through the last mile of our vaccination program.”

Chin-Hong noted that the city’s history of being at the forefront of the fight against the AIDS virus may also have instilled a confidence in health policies that other regions lack.

“San Francisco has a long history of openness and integration of academics and public health into its community and politics,” he said. “Northern California was very pro-vaccine and wearing masks was popular here too.”

A handful of counties across the country have even higher vaccination rates than San Francisco. This includes Hamilton County, New York, where 75% of eligible residents were fully vaccinated, according to an analysis of data maintained by the New York Times. But none of these counties is home to a major city.

The state of California preparing to meet most of its Covid restrictions on 15th Angeles Times. The state has one of the highest vaccination rates in the country, but it still lags behind 11 states, including Vermont, Massachusetts, and Hawaii.

However, Chin-Hong said the fact that California also had a major Covid-19 outbreak this winter means the number of immunized residents in the state is particularly high.

“California is something like the Covid-Safehouse of the United States at the moment,” he said. “If you look at the burden of disease, this is one of the safest places.”

A crackling fire in the fireplace sounds great this time of year. There is something that a wood fire lacks that a gas insert lacks: on the one hand, the crackling sound, along with the sight and smell of logs burning on the stove.

Before we break out the chestnuts, however, we should consider the maintenance required to keep a fireplace safe.

Andy Looker has been a chimney sweep for over 30 years. He and his wife, Jill Looker, run Clifton Park Chimney Maintenance. Andy learned the trade from his brother Pete, the founder of the State Chimney Sweepers Guild.

The capital region offers a lot of variety for a chimney sweep due to the age range of the housing. The lookers might be asked to service a two-sided brick fireplace built in recent years or step into a hearth installed more than a century ago.

If Dick Van Dyke singing “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from “Mary Poppins” immediately comes to mind when you hear “Chimney Sweep” please know the Lookers heard all of your jokes. Despite the soundstage choreography you see in the film, Sweeps don’t spend much time on the roof. Most of the time, their work can be done in the house.

There are two types of fireplaces (without wood stoves), Looker explained: brickwork and pre-fabricated metal. The latter is far more common, Looker says, because they’re safer and easy to install. The newer the house, the more likely it is that there is a precast metal part.

If you’re in the market and interested in a home with a fireplace, a chimney and fireplace inspection, separate from the regular home inspection, is important, according to Jill Looker. A certified chimney sweep examines the smoke vent (the pipe that carries smoke up and out of the chimney) for cracks with a camera. They also measure the distance from the inside of the smoke chamber to the outside of the facing brick. Less than 16 inches, says Andy Looker, is a sign that the heat is getting too close to combustible materials – like your mantelpiece.

In the case of a brick fireplace, not only the condition of the firebox and the flap must be taken into account, but also how well the fireplace is supported from below.

According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a chimney made of bricks, blocks, or stone and mortar can hold 6 or 7 tons. The job of a sweeper is not only to clean the chimney and chimney, but also to examine the supporting structure. Any shifting or setting down can cause the front stones to peel off and open a crack between the damper frame and the front stone. This can lead to a fire. In years of experience, Looker has seen the risk of fire increase when heating oil becomes more expensive and people put wood stoves in fireplaces to use the chimney – except that the facility was unsafe.

A fireplace can take longer between cleanings if the user burns oven-dried wood. It doesn’t just have to be hardwood – that’s a myth, Looker says, but it has to be dry. You can burn hardwood because it gives off more heat for longer than, say, pine, but it is also safe to burn.

A chimney will stay cleaner if the fire burning in the chimney heats up quickly to 300 degrees and burns for several hours to prevent creosote from forming. Creosote is a mixture of tar and soot. If you look up your chimney and see a lot of shiny things on the sides, that’s bad news, Looker says.

Another reason to rent a sweep before preparing for winter is to avoid roasting a living thing.

“One of my jobs is to get dead animals out of the chimney,” says Looker. “Fleas will live on a decaying raccoon, so I left jobs covered in fleas.” The songwriters didn’t take that into account when they wrote: “A ‘Sweep is as happy as luck can be, Chim Chiminey, Chim Chiminey, Chim Chim Cher-Oo.”

SAN FRANCISCO experts have solved the code in the “340 Cipher” posted to the San Francisco Chronicle in 1969 by the Zodiac Killer, the elusive person who terrorized the California Bay Area decades ago and killed five people, the newspaper reported on Friday morning.

According to code breaker David Oranchak, the cipher attributed to the killer says: “I hope you have a lot of fun catching me. … I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise earlier because I have enough now.” Have slaves to work for me. “

RELATED: New Theory Emerges On The Identity Of The Zodiac Killer

In a statement to our sister station ABC7 News on Friday, the FBI confirmed that they knew the cipher had been cracked by “private individuals”.

The agency said the case was still an “ongoing investigation”.

“The Zodiac Killer has terrorized multiple communities in Northern California, and although decades have passed, we continue to seek justice for the victims of these brutal crimes. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation and out of respect for the victims and their families, we are at this point make no further comments, “said the FBI.

In December 1968, the Zodiac killer killed two teenagers on Lake Herman Road in Benicia. A couple were later shot dead in July 1969 while parked in Blue Rock Springs Park in Vallejo. One of the victims died.

In September of that year, a masked suspect stabbed and killed two people in Lake Berryessa, Napa County, California.

RELATED: I-Team: Friend Confesses To Be Zodiac Killer

In October 1969, a San Francisco taxi driver was shot dead.

The identity of the Zodiac Killer has been a mystery for decades. Investigators were hoping a cipher would reveal the killer’s name, but the 340 doesn’t.
