SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 2, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The leadership of two renowned educational institutions, the University of San Francisco (USF) and the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), announced today they have signed a letter of intent to explore integrating operations and academic programs in the arts to elevate the next generation of artists.

The agreement approved by the trustees of each institution calls for a period of due diligence leading to USF acquiring SFAI and the integration of the undergraduate and graduate arts programs to benefit students through collaborative opportunities. The program would be known as the San Francisco Art Institute at the University of San Francisco ([email protected]). SFAI’s historical buildings, art and film collections, and assets would be acquired by USF.

SFAI, founded in 1871, is among the nation’s oldest and most prestigious schools of contemporary fine art. Celebrated artists who have studied or taught at SFAI include Ansel Adams, Kathryn Bigelow, Joan Brown, Enrique Chagoya, Bruce Conner, Angela Davis, Jay DeFeoRichard Diebenkorn, Mike Henderson, Mildred Howard, Toba Khedoori, George Kuchar, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Annie LeibovitzCristóbal Martínez, Alicia McCarthy, Barry McGee, Catherine Opie, David ParkMark Rothko, Carlos Villaand Kehinde Wiley.

USF — the city’s first university — was founded in 1855 by the Jesuit order of Catholic priests and brothers to provide educational opportunities for largely immigrant families in the Bay Area. Today, USF enrolls more than 10,000 students from around the world in 230 undergraduate, graduate, professional, and certificate programs in the arts and sciences, business, law, education, and nursing and health professions. Among USF alumni are san francisco Major London Breed, NBA player and coach Bill Cartwrightco-founder and former CEO of BEA Systems Alfred Chuang, poet and musician Michael Frantiartist and philanthropist GordonGettyCalifornia Supreme Court Justice MartinJenkinsNBC journalist Vicky Nguyenand the late California historian Kevin Starr.

The two institutions have been in conversation about possible integration of operations and academic programs in the arts at various times over the past decade, and faculty have collaborated on exhibitions, programs, and initiatives in and beyond classrooms and studios.

With the signing of a letter of intent, SFAI and USF agree to explore an integration that recognizes the prestige and history of both institutions while opening new doors for future opportunities under a combined entity. The period of due diligence will include reviewing and assessing finances, the physical assets at SFAI’s Chestnut Street campus on Russian Hill, the process of academic accreditation for the newly created program, and other matters, including employment opportunities.

Current SFAI students who complete their degree programs at USF would receive the same academic and co-curricular services, opportunities, and support that USF students traditionally receive.

It is expected that the review would be completed before summer to allow for integrated operations beginning in the fall.

USF board chair John F Nicolai said: “USF is delighted to join with SFAI and to work with the faculty, staff, and leadership to explore this exciting opportunity to create a distinctive program of arts education, unique in higher education. We believe [email protected] would be a tremendous benefit to the Bay Area, the nation, and the world. Together, the two institutions would create a premier arts curriculum, with an intensive studio environment and a vital liberal arts education.”

SFAI board chair Lonnie Graham said: “We were foremost impressed by USF’s profound commitment to social justice and especially by its deep understanding of the power of the arts to be a significant pillar of change in the world. USF has shown the depth of its commitment to be a major force for change in legal systems, social programs, education, and technology. This union would create an innovative confluence of the arts and academics to advance a curriculum that reinforces the value of the arts in changing the world.”

The period of due diligence will include a collaborative process of curricular redesign and development by USF and SFAI faculty to ensure the new integrated academic unit would reflect the vision and mission of both institutions.

Pending comprehensive financial review, the letter of intent calls for USF to assume responsibility for SFAI’s property and assets on Chestnut Street. Those assets include the Anne Bremer Memorial Library; the Diego Rivera Gallery and the artist’s monumental mural; professional exhibition space; extensive digital, photo, and film labs and studio space; and a rooftop amphitheater.

Addressing the due diligence process, Rev. Paul J FitzgeraldSJ, president of USF, said: “We are committed to transparency and openness in our collaboration with faculty, staff, and students, and look forward to imagining the design of this new program with our communities. Additionally, we are very aware of how vital SFAI is to the Bay Area’s cultural, artistic, and philanthropic communities, and we anticipate productive conversations with these essential partners.”

San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch (left) with Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (10) Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers have limited NFL draft capital in 2022, but postponing those four players at the start of the off-season can help correct this in good part.

Since head coach Kyle Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch took on their respective roles in 2017, the San Francisco 49ers have been no stranger to notable professions.

There have been some blockbusters like EDGE Dee Ford’s 2019 pickup truck from the Kansas City Chiefs and perhaps the most notable ones, acquiring quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots just before the 2017 NFL trading deadline. Other offers were also mixed in.

With the close of trading in 2021 in the rearview mirror, the next time that Lynch and Co. can conclude such a deal could take place at the beginning of the League New Year in spring 2022.

And there are certainly some steps Lynch should take, especially after handing out multiple NFL first-round draft picks and a third-round selection last April to snag quarterback Trey Lance.

While many of these proposed trade ideas wouldn’t bring in anything of the kind in return, this could help top up overall design capital for Lynch and the Niners over the next year.

Of course, like any other team-to-team transaction, San Francisco can’t just trade “bad” players for something nice in return. Good luck trying to make this happen if you are a general manager.

Here are four, however, Lynch should explore moving.

49ers Trade Candidate No. 4: Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

Let’s get that out of the way first as it’s the most obvious.

Right or wrong, the 49ers have stayed with Garoppolo as an established starter this year despite investing in Lance.

Signed the next year, however, according to Over the Cap, the Niners can redeem $ 25.6 million of Garoppolo’s $ 27 million via a trade to another team.

Granted, this team would either have to have enough cap space to absorb that hit and / or Garoppolo would have to forego his no-trade clause and possibly accept a pay cut as he would admit he was going to have that kind of money on open market would not get if released directly.

That said, there are still teams Garoppolo might prefer anyway, and the off-season quarterbacks market in 2022 will be terribly provocative, especially with limited options in the NFL draft.

Meanwhile, San Francisco is hoping Garoppolo will close the year out as well as possible, in return adding net worth, thereby opening the door for Lance in 2022.

San Francisco has more than 2,000 streets, from major arteries to a maze of alleys and dirt roads. There are also over 220 parks, about 120 miles of hiking trails, as well as lakes, attractions, and public spaces.

After 14 years in the city, I thought I knew well, but when my partner Brett Lider decided to ride every road and trail during the pandemic, I learned how much I didn’t know. Every time he uploaded a new running route and photos, he just reiterated how much there was still to be discovered.

I learned that Brett was not alone in his endeavors. Many others have undertaken this quest through running, walking, and cycling. I spoke to seven of these city explorers to learn more about their travels, and it turns out it’s not just about getting a destination; It’s also what you learn about the city and yourself along the way.

Toby Silver, who has lived in San Francisco for 25 years, started his project in 2017. “It was the beginning and the celebration of my 20th year in San Francisco. As a big birthday was approaching, I wanted to write a lyrical song of praise for the city, my love for running and my urge to discover and find joy and meaning in life by connecting people and places. And not with words, but with my feet and a camera, ”he said.

Everyone has their own personal definition of what it means to explore each street. For Joy Durighello, who was born in San Francisco, it is “anything that is paved with at least one street sign and a house entrance”. Others aim to visit every public road, as well as private roads, and all of the city’s parks, stairs, and paths.

Frank Chan, who has lived in Russian Hill since 2002, did all this and more: “During the brief period at the beginning of the pandemic, when the Presidio Golf Course was closed to golfers, the public was allowed to move freely. I ran the 18 holes one after the other as if I were playing a round. “

And how do you find out how many of the over 1,500 miles of San Francisco you’ve seen? There are many options, from analog to digital – some use paper maps and others use apps like Strava to record the activity and then import it into other apps like StreetFerret and CityStrides to see what percentage of a city they have visited.

When Chan uploaded his running routes to CityStrides, he found that he had already covered 30% of San Francisco. Motivated by his goal, he ran the remaining 70% in just three months.

Chan’s friend Russell Gong also took the project to extremes. On New Year’s Eve 2020 he ran 17 hours straight to get closer to his goal. “That day, I drove downtown north of Market as part of a full-day race. I ran it like a lawn mower, up and down all the downtown streets and then east to west to cover all the horizontals. I started at 5am, stopped for donuts after an hour. At lunch a colleague brought me a burrito and a beer. Later that day, Frank [Chan] came out and ran a few miles with me. I made it back home at 10 p.m. with plenty of time to tidy up and watch the ball fall with the family. “

But you don’t have to cross all of San Francisco to see it, and you can gradually work towards your destination. It took Travis Monson, a tour guide and photographer who wrote about his project for SFGATE, six years to finish his walking tour, which began the week he moved to the city from Utah in 2011. “The motivation came and went in the first few years. In 2014 I received a book from Gary Kamiya called “Cool Gray City of Love” that opened my eyes to the city in a new way. After reading this book, I made a real commitment to achieving my goal, ”he said.

Lynn Adachi, who has lived in the Bay Area for 30 years and in San Francisco since 2016, is also taking a more relaxed approach: “We’re looking for good cafes and other goodies that we can have at the end of our walk,” she said. “Sometimes we center our walks in new areas around neighborhood events and festivals.”

And it would not be a proper search if there were no obstacles to overcome. Silver wrote that “Climbing fences, stealthy running at night or early in the morning was not uncommon. Nothing ever felt like an obstacle, more of a problem to be solved. For some of the private roads I kindly inquired and got those Permission, while on the islands of Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and Treasure and Yerba Buena it was often an act to ask forgiveness when caught. I occasionally met a stray dog, saw myriad raccoons and coyotes, and some friendly domestic and alley cats and on an excursion (which took us to Mount San Bruno), a mountain lion. ”

Lider, a white man, recognizes his privilege to be able to do all of this. “I was inspired by the BLM movement and the murder of Ahmaud Arbery while running. I wanted to draw attention to our unequal access to – and safety – the outdoors, ”he said. “Some of us sneak into private streets to check off our lists. Could a colored runner do the same without taking more risks? “

For Brett Lider, driving on any street has brought to light some more serious problems in our city, including illegal garbage disposal and the housing affordability crisis.

Brett Lider

But where the challenges are great, the rewards are great. “I learned that I knew so little about the city where I spent most of my life,” said Gong. “There have been wonderful discoveries of small hidden communities, strange architecture, and parks that I’ve never heard of. I have a much better sense of direction around the city now, having seen everything on foot. I also know where there are many public toilets now! “

Adachi had a full list of the things she loved on her trip including “Gravel roads in Glen Park, all the murals and artwork on the houses and walls, the lovely tiled stairs, the views from different hills, the beautiful gardens, and quirky things who have favourited people flaunt inside and outside their homes.

Monson’s project even helped him start a new career. “I learned so much about myself from these walks. They have been a source of meditation for me and have enabled me to truly disconnect from work and life,” he said. “I also learned that I love taking photos and documenting the city from my perspective. I’m in the process of publishing a book on San Francisco, and I plan to have more photo exhibitions in 2022 to share my work. “

For those who would like to embark on this quest, our explorers had a few tips for you. Monson recommends getting a pair of walking shoes and recording your walks in a journal. Gong reminds people to plan toilet stops and carry a mask and money for food and drinks.

While the completion of a project like this one offers a satisfying sense of completion, San Francisco is always in flux. “During my runs, despite our relative density, I saw how much unused land there is in places like SoMA and Bayview / Hunters Point. I was reminded of how much of the city is under construction and always evolving, ”Chan said. “New roads will be built in the coming years.”

The first domino fell in January 2020.

Then-director of the San Francisco Department of Public Works, Mohammed Nuru, has been charged with a series of federal corruption charges, including lied to the FBI – crimes that could land him in jail for up to 25 years.

At that time, US Attorney David Anderson commented on the allegations with the words: “Corruption flows into San Francisco from all over the world”.

The next two years seem to prove him right. Several heads of the city administrations have since been dismissed from their offices on charges of corruption. City workers and contractors have pleaded guilty to charges of bribery, money laundering and fraud; others confess their innocence as the charges continue to mount.

The state and local investigation has touched building inspectors, real estate agents and even a Chinese billionaire. From the public works to the mayor’s office to the public utility commission, new fees arise month after month, hydra-like.

With so many interconnected allegations floating around town, it can be difficult to keep track of exactly who is involved in what. Based on the coverage of Joe Eskenazi, we created an interactive website to show the connections between the people and organizations that play a large role in the investigation. As more and more players are swallowed up – and as connections are made between players – we will update this item.

Click the circles below to learn more. Click on the lines between the circles to understand why the two are connected. This diagram works best on a large screen.

Some were calculatedto have others pleaded guilty. Others had no charge was brought. See how they’re connected.

A full screen version of the diagram can be found here.

Please note that inclusion in this table does not necessarily mean misconduct, but is only in connection with city investigations. The table does not claim to be complete either – there will be links that are not included here. We will update the table as the investigation progresses.

Test your knowledge

How well do you know the corruption scandal that rocked San Francisco for the past two years? Click the question fields to view the answers.

Question 1: Who pleaded guilty to bribing Mohammed Nuru with a Rolex worth nearly $ 40,000?

Question 2: How many of all the individuals and organizations on our map who have pleaded guilty to the indictment are directly linked to Mohammed Nuru?

All of them. At least 8 people and the disposal company Recology have pleaded guilty to the charges in connection with the corruption investigation in the town hall. They are all directly related to Mohammed Nuru.

Question 3: How Much has Recology over-billed San Francisco taxpayers since 2017?

Question 4: How are former Public Utilities Commission chief Harlan Kelly and former Chief Inspector Bernie Curran connected?

Question 5: How are Mayor London Breed and federally indicted restaurateur Nick Bovis connected?

Question 6: How many jumps can you make from Balmore Hernandez to Rodrigo Santos the least?

We think the answer is three – from Hernandez to Mohammed Nuru, to Tom Hui, to Santos.

Question 7: Who oversaw the wedding of Former City Administrator Naomi Kelly and Former Director General of the Public Utilities Commission, Harlan Kelly?

Willie Brown, the former mayor of San Francisco.

Question 8: What non-profit had a sub-account that was used by Mohammed Nuru as a slush fund? The San Francisco Parks Alliance. Funds were deposited into the account by Recology executives as part of a bribery program and allegedly used to fund lavish parties.

Question 9: What service did Walter Wong affiliate Alternate Choice LLC in San Francisco provide? Alternate Choice LLC provided the city’s much maligned Renaissance trash cans. The poorly made cans aggravated the San Francisco garbage problem and added to Public Works’ expensive, ongoing efforts to build their own perfect custom garbage can.

Question 10: What did Balmore Hernandez, Alan Verela and William Gilmartin plead guilty to in bribing Mohammed Nuru? A $ 40,000 John Deere tractor. It was allegedly sent to Nuru (using the name of his girlfriend Sandra Zuniga) to be acquired on a deal for an asphalt factory.

The A’s will begin scouring other markets for potential relocations on instructions from Major League Baseball while they continue to watch the construction of a new waterfront ballpark in downtown Oakland, the team said Tuesday.

A new stadium has long been a priority for the A’s who proposed a 35,000-seat baseball stadium at the downtown Howard Terminal site and accompanying mixed-use development, a $ 12 billion project.

The opening of the relocation facility could add urgency as the A’s have asked Oakland City Council to vote on the proposal by July.

“The future success of the A depends on a new ballpark,” A owner John Fisher said in a statement Tuesday. “Oakland is a great baseball city and we will continue to pursue our waterfront ballpark project. We will also be following MLB’s direction to explore other markets. “

The A play in the outdated Coliseum, their home since 1968, and in recent years the NFL Raiders and NBA Warriors have left Oakland to move to Las Vegas and San Francisco, respectively. The proposed Howard Terminal ballpark, which is expected to cost more than $ 1 billion and will be funded by private funding and project-related revenues, is the team’s most advanced move in building a new home in Oakland.

In addition to the baseball stadium, the proposed project includes 3,000 residential units, 1.5 million square meters of office space and 270,000 square meters of retail space. According to A’s proposal, the project is expected to generate $ 955 million for the Oakland City General Fund and $ 450 million for social benefits. It is also proposed to use $ 855 million in tax revenue from the site to fund infrastructure costs.

Major League Baseball said in a statement Tuesday it was “concerned about the progress of the A-ballpark’s new efforts with local officials and other stakeholders in Oakland.”

“The A’s have worked very hard over the past four years to build a new ballpark in downtown Oakland. They invested significant resources while facing multiple roadblocks,” the MLB statement said. “We know they continue to be very committed to success in Oakland. With two other sports franchises recently leaving the community, their commitment to Oakland is more important than ever.

“The Oakland Coliseum location is not a viable option for baseball’s vision of the future. We’ve directed athletics to explore other markets while they continue to operate a waterfront ballpark in Oakland. Athletics needs a new baseball field to stay competitive. So it is now in our best interests to consider other markets as well. “

Justin Berton, a spokesman for Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, said in a statement: “We share the urgency of MLB and their continued preference for Oakland.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf (right) answers questions while A President Dave Kaval looks on during a press conference at A’s corporate headquarters in Oakland, California. Wednesday, November 28, 2018, announces early plans for the construction of a new ballpark at the Howard Terminal.

Jessica Christian / The Chronicle

“Today’s statement makes it clear that the only viable way to get the A’s roots in Oakland is to have a waterfront ballpark. … Now, with the recent start of the financial discussions with the A’s, we are calling on our entire community – including regional and local partners – to band together and support a new, financially viable, world-class, fiscally responsible neighborhood that will improve our city and city Region and keeps the A’s in Oakland where they belong. “

As recently as last year, the A’s may have wanted to open the Howard Terminal baseball stadium in 2023. However, A’s president Dave Kaval said in an interview Tuesday that due to delays, “the earliest event could likely be 2027”.

The lease of the A in the Coliseum ends after the 2024 season, but could probably be extended. Kaval said MLB’s direction on Tuesday was “a confirmation that time is running out, that we really need clarity about our future and the location of our home.

“We have a great vision for a downtown baseball stadium at the Howard Terminal,” said Kaval. “But for the same reason, progress in this area has not been rapid enough and we are concerned, as is the state-of-the-art league.”

Kaval has asked Oakland City Council to vote on the project before the summer break. Council chairman Nikki Fortunato Bas said in a statement Tuesday that the council “has a duty to keep the A’s in Oakland”.

“I met Dave Kaval on April 30th and told him that the leadership of the council … is ready to meet with A to discuss the project,” Bas said. “You did not reply and I tried to repeat our offer today. We are also waiting for additional information from the A’s about the project so that the city staff can plan the term sheet for the city council. “

Opponents of the project raised concerns about the impact on transportation and the environment, saying it would affect the shipping business in the Port of Oakland. The East Oakland Stadium Alliance, which opposes the project, has asked the A’s to explore the building at the Coliseum site.

“If they were to focus on rebuilding the Colosseum, which is already approved for a new stadium village, there would be no threats to force the city to give away public funds to support a luxury development complex in the region’s industrial job center,” said the group in a statement.

A’s ideas for a ballpark near Laney College in Oakland or a move to Fremont or San Jose failed. According to ESPN, Las Vegas, the current home of the A’s Triple A daughter, would be the “most likely option” for the A if they moved. Commissioner Rob Manfred previously listed Las Vegas, along with Montreal, as a candidate city for a possible MLB expansion. Portland, Ore .; Charlotte, NC; Nashville and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Kaval said it was “a real (MLBs) decision as to which locations we would look at.” … But this process will begin immediately. “

Tuesday’s news came with the A’s in Boston to start a series against the Red Sox. On the field, the A’s have had a successful run in the last few seasons and reached the playoffs for three consecutive years. Bay Area-born manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday afternoon the news “certainly doesn’t preclude the A’s from building an Oakland stadium and the team is” focused on playing. “

“The A’s have long been an important organization in Oakland,” said Melvin. “I think that’s still the hope. … We continue to play in Oakland. Until something really changes, it’s the same for me and the same feeling that I’ve always played there. “

For wine lovers, opening a special bottle can be like a tour of the wine region itself. The nuances of soil, climate and even the personality of the winemaker can be revealed in each glass. The release of this year’s limited Stags Leap District Appellation Collection offers a journey through one of the world’s most renowned Cabernet Sauvignon destinations with 17 different Stags Leap District wines, all from the exceptional 2017 vintage.

This year, Appellation Collection loyalists and buyers also have the opportunity to meet the winemakers and winemakers through a series of interactive virtual tastings so Cabernet Sauvignon enthusiasts can learn more about each of the coveted wines.

“Each of these bottlings stand on their own, but as a collective they tell a complete story of the Stags Leap District and show the distinctive traits of the wines of this region – grace and power, lush texture and lively fruit,” said Nancy Bialek, Executive Director of Hirschen Leap District winemakers. “Our virtual tastings deepen the experience and offer the opportunity to hear directly from our winemakers about this unforgettable vintage.”

The 2017 growing season was beautiful, starting with welcome rains that ended a year-long drought and grapevines drank deep in preparation for summer to come. The summer was mild until August, and then – as if fully aware of the holiday celebrating the hard work that makes America tick – the harvest quickly began after a Labor Day heat surge. A cooling phase shortly before the harvest led to a nice tannin development and wines that are rich, round and very well structured – classic characteristics of the Cabernet Sauvignons in the region. Most of the fruits in the appellation were picked before the forest fires broke out that year, so the wines were safe.

Only 150 sets of the wines are available. Each collection contains 17 bottles of 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, beautifully packaged and ready to ship for the holidays. Featured wineries include Baldacci Family Vineyards, Chimney Rock Winery, Cliff Lede Vineyards, Clos du Val Wineries, Ilsley Vineyards, Lindstrom Wines, Malk Family Wineries, Odette Estate Winery, Pine Ridge Wineries , Quixote Winery, Regusci Winery, Shafer Wineries, and Silverado Leap Wine Cellars, Stags’ Leap Winery, Steltzner Vineyards, and Taylor Family Vineyards.

“This is a treasured gift for any Cabernet lover and an incredible addition to a wine cellar,” continued Bialek. “It’s a way of traveling bottle by bottle through the district and exploring the terroir that makes the region so recognizable.”

The Stags Leap District is a historic Napa Valley appellation with records of viticulture dating back to the 19th century. The district bordered the Vaca Mountains to the east and the Napa River to the west and was the first AVA (American Viticultural Area) in the United States to be approved due to the specific nature of its soils. The wines have an international reputation for quality and are critically praised for their particularity.

The 2017 Appellation Collection is exclusively available from October 15 to December 15, 2020 and costs $ 1,999 for the 17-bottle set, which comes in two boxes with detailed tasting notes for winemakers. Ground shipping is included. To purchase or register for the virtual tasting series, visit www.stagleapdistrict.com/AppellationCollection.
