When Taco Bell removed the “Grilled Stuft Nacho” from its nationwide menu in 2015, Chris Sandberg was crushed.

The specialty item – a triangle-shaped tortilla filled with beef, crunchy red strips, sour cream and cheesy jalapeño sauce – was “the best thing I ever had at Taco Bell,” Sandberg said.

The day he discovered the dish, he liked it so much, “I had it every day for a week,” Sandberg said. “The following week, it was discontinued.”

After it was taken from the menu, he moved on and tried other items, but none measured up for him. It stayed fresh in his mind. And on Jan. 4, 2021, he decided to start a daily exercise challenge on TikTok, in the hope of getting Taco Bell’s attention.

Sandberg shared a video of himself, breathless in his bathroom mirror, saying, “Day one of exercising every day until Taco Bell brings back the Grilled Stuft Nacho.”

The seven-second clip went viral with hundreds of thousands of views. Sandberg doubled down on his unusual – and somewhat illogical – effort to apply pressure to the restaurant chain through physical activity. He posted another mid-workout video the following day, and every single day thereafter. In the roughly 470 days since he started chronicling his daily exercise routine on TikTok, Sandberg has shed more than 85 pounds.

“I’ve put in an unbelievable amount of physical work,” said Sandberg, who lives in San Francisco, is self-employed, and produces social media videos and short films. He emphasized that he does not work for Taco Bell and never has.

The goal of his workout antic is twofold: While his primary objective is to bring back his beloved Grilled Stuft Nacho, when he began his Taco Bell challenge more than one year ago, Sandberg – who weighed close to 300 pounds before the pandemic – what also seeking to lose weight. He decided to merge the two missions.

“I do understand the irony in exercising every day for a fast-food item,” he said. “It started as a joke that has clearly gone way too far, but I can’t stop now.”

Although Sandberg initially executed the idea in jest, he quickly realized “it resonates for people,” as losing weight can be a stressful struggle for many. He wanted to find a way to make his experience lighthearted.

Sandberg grew eager to get in shape after “I read that people who were overweight were more vulnerable to COVID, so that had been at the back of my head for a while,” he said, adding that he was 275 pounds when he started the exercise challenge, after losing 15 pounds over the preceding few months.

Sandberg thought that publicly sharing his weight-loss journey on social media might help hold him accountable while also potentially motivating others. He wanted something to set himself apart, a cause that might be comical enough to compel Internet strangers to cheer him on.

“I didn’t want the journey to be about a number on a scale,” Sandberg said. “I wanted it to be fun. I wanted the goal to be something that had nothing to do with my weight.”

Enter the Grilled Tier Nacho.

“Everyone loves Taco Bell,” Sandberg said in a bold culinary statement. “That’s just what came to me.”

Plus, he believed his efforts might actually work.

“Doja Cat wanted them to bring back the Mexican Pizza, and look what happened,” Sandberg said. “The Grilled Stuft Nacho is better than the Mexican Pizza, and the world needs to know that.”

According to the Taco Bell Fandom Wiki, the Grilled Stuft Nacho first appeared on the menu in 2013 but was discontinued in March 2014. It made a brief reappearance in 2015 before it was pulled for good. Some people were peeved, though probably no one as much as Sandberg.

“There is a common belief that everything at Taco Bell tastes the same, but the Grilled Stuft Nacho is the exception,” Sandberg said, explaining his appreciation for a specific sauce.

“I want to make this clear,” he said. “The cheesy jalapeño sauce is different than their creamy jalapeño sauce. Without the cheesy jalapeño sauce, it is just not the same.”

Sandberg found an online community that shared his taste in fast food. Someone started an online petition four years ago pleading with the chain to bring back the specialty item. The petition collected 792 signatures – including Sandberg’s. The appeal was not enough to revive the dish, so Sandberg decided to take matters into his own hands.

First, he began with at-home workouts, then incorporated weightlifting, high-intensity interval training and long-distance running into his regular fitness routine.

“There are days that you want to give up,” Sandberg said. “On the days that you do want to work out, that’s when you push yourself physically, but on the days that you don’t want to work out, that’s when you have to push yourself mentally.”

As the sun spreads onto 18th Street in the Mission District, it’s not uncommon to see Rafael Garcia juicing grapefruits in the Tartine Bakery kitchen, and, as the moon rises that same evening, it’s not uncommon to see him bringing a power washer into one of more than a dozen restaurants in the city. He’s recognizable by his iconic look: diamond earrings on either side of his chinstrap beard, a smile so joyous it forces his eyes to squint. But few regular customers, or even fellow staff, realize Garcia has a robust cleaning business that works primarily with restaurants in San Francisco and Oakland. His client list, now at 14, includes some of the Bay Area’s buzziest and best restaurants: Frances, Octavia, Wahpepah’s Kitchen, Understory, and Reem’s.

Rafael Garcia, who works as an assistant general manager at Tartine, began his tenure at the bakery on Guerrero Street after working as a janitor at a sausage company in San Francisco. It was 2011 and, while the cleaning job was fun, he wanted to gain a new set of skills. He started working front of house at the bakery, stocking cups and doling out croissants. “At that time, my English wasn’t so good,” Garcia says. “I had to learn to communicate with other people outside of Spanish.”

Garcia is as standard a sight at the Tartine Bakery as the country loaf itself. Paolo Bicchieri

As he put in his six-odd years of working at Tartine, his wife Rosa Lopez was gaining skills in residential cleaning. It was her idea to launch Lopez Cleaning Services in 2017 when she decided to launch her own house cleaning business. Tartine was looking for a new cleaning contract at the time, and he suggested they start there. “Five or six months later, they noticed it was looking good,” Garcia says. “So they invited me to clean the Manufactory when it opened.” In no time, he was responsible for both businesses, the commissary kitchen, and the 9th Avenue Tartine location when it opened — not to mention the gigs at customers’ homes that his partner, in life and business, was also taking on.

If there’s a textbook example of the power of word-of-mouth community, it’s Garcia and Lopez Cleaning Services. In short order he picked up contracts at Smallworks, a framing shop, and Mr. Muggle’s, a pet-sitting service, both of which are in the same Mission District milieu as Tartine — geographically and socially. When Nick Beitcher, owner of Midnite Bagel, went out on his own, he asked Garcia to clean his commissary space in the Dogpatch. Lopez Cleaning Services will handle the new retail location in the Inner Sunset, too.

“Rafa was the guy,” Beitcher says. “He knew every nook and cranny of the [Tartine] space and could do anything — equipment to fix, recipes that needed to be translated to Spanish, he was just the guy.” He’d watch Garcia go from a full shift at the bakery to a cleaning job that wouldn’t end until three in the morning, and he says he is blown away by Garcia’s work ethic. “He’s an incredibly hard worker,” Beitcher says. “There’s never any doubt he’s going to do what he says he’s going to do.” Garcia is sheepish, but acknowledges it’s been these kind of personal reviews that have allowed his business to flourish.

Garcia is considered the resident master of any and all equipment, gear, and repair. Rafael García

The work does add up. Garcia says he and his wife love it — the hustle and grind — and really loves having clients and customers from both his business and his job at Tartine. Organizing his life, though, and feeling a sense of control is a main motivation. “We wanted to have our own time, our own schedule, and also for sure to make more money,” Garcia says. “To be free. Not living month to month.”

It’s been a hard time for Tartine. But not so for Garcia, though he did lose about 40 percent of his clients in the first year of the pandemic. The cleaning company has two rotating employees now, and he just added carpet cleaning and moving services to his offerings. There’s no limit in sight, he says. “Me and my wife, we’re growing together,” Garcia says. “I cannot know, but I want to make everybody happy. If you have a new opportunity, you have to take it.”

Inside an unassuming grocery store situated in the shadow of Sutro Tower on Arguello Boulevard and Cabrillo Street, a bold proclamation is plastered everywhere.

From a handwritten sign displayed in the front window to the menu board behind the deli counter and the ATM screen that’s tucked into a far corner, it doesn’t take long to spot “Home of the World Famous Turkey Sandwich” at Arguello Market in San Francisco — it’s even printed on the back of the store’s popular crewneck sweatshirts and on the bottom of every receipt.

The shelves are well-stocked with standard supermarket offerings, from organic produce and fresh loaves of bread to canned goods and boxes of cereal, not to mention a wide selection of beer and wine, perfect for an impromptu picnic in nearby Golden Gate Park.

But Andy Rothschild, who grew up four blocks away in the Inner Richmond and has been a frequent customer for most of his 32 years of life, said he’s never really viewed Arguello Market as a place to buy groceries.

To him, it’s the mecca of turkey sandwiches in San Francisco.

“I have listened to many people in front of [or] behind me in line place their orders … whenever someone orders something other than a turkey sandwich, I feel sorry for them for doing it wrong,” he said.

Rothschild won’t come out and say that Arguello Market offers the most out-of-the-box sandwich in town. (There are spots like Deli Board and Turner’s Kitchen for that, he said.) But it’s the no-frills approach that’s kept him coming back for decades.

“Arguello may have the best singular sandwich,” he said. “It isn’t fancy, but the roast turkey is just so good. Any true fan is getting it on Dutch Crunch, with avocado, and if you want my insider tips, the move is to get it with dark meat and pepper jack.”

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

Owner Sal Qaqundah, who bought the market in 1984, said the roast turkey sandwich is his best-seller by a long shot. The store makes around 150 turkey sandwiches every day, encompassing about 70% of the orders made at the deli counter. The market also goes through 12 turkeys weighing 25 pounds each during the lunch rush. On a recent visit, I watched the golden brown birds twirl and glisten beneath the heated glow of the rotisserie oven while I placed my order and the savory aroma wafted through every aisle.

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

“I don’t smell it anymore because I live in it,” Qaqundah said with a laugh. “I’m here almost every day.”

When he moved to Southern California from Palestine as a teenager in 1969, he started working at grocery stores and diners to pay his way through college, including Ralph’s and Denny’s. His second-ever job was at Spires, a 24-hour diner chain that had a $1.49 chicken sandwich special on Monday nights.

“People lined up outside of the restaurant for that and they were busy from 3-10 p.m. nonstop,” he said. “And because of the quality, the quantity, the service and the price, they kept coming back. It really stuck in my mind.”

Deli customers order a hot roasted turkey sandwich at Arguello Market.

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

Qaqundah graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a degree in speech pathology and taught for two years in Huntington Beach. It was a rewarding job, he said, but he wasn’t earning enough money and still had to work nights at various restaurant gigs until 2 a.m. to make ends meet. Around that time, a family friend living in San Francisco mentioned they had spotted a market for sale downtown and encouraged him to check it out.

“I saw it as a chance to start my own business and excel,” Qaqundah said.

In June of 1975, he packed up all of his things and moved to the city.

Qaqundah’s first store, Cable Car Market, was on the corner of Bush and Powell streets across from Uncle Vito’s Pizza. It was a runaway success, due in part to the central location and heavy foot traffic, but after about nine years, he lost his lease and was given 30 days to vacate the premises.

As he hunted around the city in search of a new space, he came upon a now-shuttered market on Chestnut Street called Victor’s. Even though it wasn’t up for sale, he went inside and noticed they were selling fresh whole turkeys, which he found intriguing.

“God works in mysterious ways,” Qaqundah said. “I never forgot it.”

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

In 1984, he bought Arguello Market. It was run-down and hadn’t operated as a grocery store since the ’40s, he said, but when he saw the deli counter, he knew it had potential. For one, it reminded him of the chicken sandwich special at Spires and how he wanted to bring something like it to San Francisco.

He remodeled everything, from the light fixtures to the shelving to the flooring and the refrigeration. The deli counter was the only component left untouched, and while he didn’t have the means to duplicate a restaurant-quality chicken sandwich, he decided to try his hand at selling turkey sandwiches. So he started with one bird per day in 1987, and eventually graduated to two and three as the popularity of the special — then just $3.69 — skyrocketed.

“It was big enough that it could be lunch and dinner for many people,” he said. “I remember telling my customers, ‘The only drawback about this is you’re going to come back again.’”

Years later, I’d discover just about everyone had an opinion on The Sandwich. When I decided to consult Twitter, I received more than 50 replies with takes ranging from “Best Turkey Sandwich I’ve ever had” to “I was so disappointed” and “it has divided [my] entire household.”

“It’s above average at best,” one argued. “Yellow Sub is the best sandwich spot in the city and it’s not even close.”

“[It’s] An indispensable member of San Francisco‘s sandwich ecosystem,” another proclaimed.

Emails and direct messages arrived in my inbox by the dozen. People shared their tried and true advice: Order dark meat only. Try the cranberry sauce. Avocado is a must. Eat it with provolone or pepper jack, topped with pepperoncinis, or as a boxed lunch with potato salad. Order The Sandwich before noon or it’ll taste too dry. Take it out to Golden Gate Park for the ultimate dining experience.

And, like Rothschild, most insisted that Dutch Crunch was the way to go.

Others sent multiple-paragraph-long odes to the turkey sandwich. For some, it was a point of childhood nostalgia, a trusty cure for hangovers, and a meal they returned to whenever they could, even if they had moved out of San Francisco or to another state.

“I’m not really sure why this sandwich got me so passionate, but here we are …” concluded one message from Sam Johnson, who grew up in the Sunset and is now an attorney with the Tulare County Public Defender’s Office in Visalia.

Although he’s also not sure how it developed such a loyal following, he suspects Arguello Market’s proximity to the University of San Francisco, where he went to law school, and its access to Golden Gate Park, make it a popular choice.

An employee wraps a hot roasted turkey sandwich at Arguello Market.

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

“The Arguello sandwich is one of my favorite things in the city. It’s not flashy or particularly innovative but it’s so great at what it is,” he said. “I always feel at home when I eat it, and whenever I am in town, I try to stop by — even if it’s as I’m about to get on the highway and need to wait the four hours before I get home to enjoy it.”

Pete Bogdis, a former employee of the San Francisco Plumbing Company from 2001 to 2016, said he’s “eaten hundreds of them,” stopping at Arguello Market for lunch almost every time he was working in the area.

He attributes the popularity of the sandwich to word-of-mouth.

“That’s how I discovered them,” Bogdis said. “My boss brought me there once and I was hooked. I’d tell other tradesmen on jobsites about them, if they were ‘cool.’ Those of us in the know didn’t necessarily want the secret getting out. But over the years, the line got longer and it became common knowledge.”

Qaqundah chalks the hype up to the consistency of his product, which has been about the same since he introduced it 35 years ago, with the occasional improvement made here and there.

It’s a level of dedication Qaqundah’s son, Peter, admires about his father as he ensures the flavors and quality of ingredients remain familiar to those who passed on the good word and let others in on their neighborhood secret.

“Now, it’s a cult classic, if you will,” said Peter, 33, who has been helping out at the store since he was 12 years old. “He takes a lot of pride in everything he does at the store and is very meticulous and on point.”

The sandwich starts with bread sourced from Wedemeyer Bakery. Once sliced, each half is slathered with a mixture of mayonnaise and dijon mustard. Then, the carved and seasoned turkey is carefully arranged on top, followed by Kosher pickles, green and red leaf lettuce, a variety of tomatoes (that Qaqundah won’t divulge), and sweet Italian red onions.

But where did the “world famous” title come from?

Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

Over the years, Qaqundah said the turkey sandwich was reviewed by multiple publications, named a “fundamental San Francisco sandwich spot” by Eater and one of the “best fall eats” in the city by Yelp, and was even featured in the first episode of the Travel Channel’s “Shoestring Getaways” series, which concludes with hosts Christine Williams and Jules Hatfield chowing down on the sandwiches under the Golden Gate Bridge.

But when the popularity of the sandwich took off in the early ’90s, he said he was surprised to find that tourists from as far away as England and South Korea visited Arguello Market after receiving a recommendation from a local. He also discovered that longtime regulars who moved away would often return to the market for a taste of home.

“Many of them will cry when they come back, whether it’s been a year or five years or 10 years,” he said. “We wanted to keep that legacy alive. We say it’s ‘world famous’ because this is a jewel of San Francisco. It’s like a landmark. We want to keep it going.”

The sandwich is still as sought-after as it ever was, even though the price is now up to $10.99, partially due to the cost of turkey surging in recent years. Qaqundah said he’s paying three times what he was prior to the pandemic, but it hasn’t hurt sales.

“Last weekend, the line was out the door from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” he said. “We had to pause DoorDash.”

<img decoding="async" class="landscape" src="https://s.hdnux.com/photos/01/25/11/64/22322483/3/1200x0.jpg" alt="An employee holds a a hot roasted turkey sandwich at Arguello Market in San Francisco, Calif. on Apr. 10, 2022.
Douglas Zimmerman/SFGATE

He doesn’t anticipate things will slow down anytime soon. But in a city transforming as rapidly as San Francisco, it could be that customers are coming in for more than just a convenient lunch.

“It seems like there’s a tendency these days to change things up and evolve for the sake of staying fresh and not being stale,” Johnson said. “But the turkey sandwich is something that has been there. There is something to be said for that.”

Quick Response Firearms is one of the newest gun shops in Twin Falls. It is locally owned and operated. You have some really amazing things in there. The store is moving, but they won’t move far.

Right now they are behind Albertsons next to the liquor store on Blue Lakes Blvd. The shop is pretty small but full of really great stuff. If you’ve been around this complex recently, you may have noticed a sign with the Quick Response Firearms logo on the front of the complex. You will be moving to the front of the building. In fact, they are in the process of moving some things as we speak.

I’m not sure when the new store front will open for trading. I think their new location, while not far from the previous one, will work wonders for their business. If you didn’t realize Quick Response Firearms was back there, you could easily drive by or never know it existed. Now their new storefront will face Addison Avenue with a large sign that is welcoming and eye-catching.

The business actually only started online and has only grown since then. If you’ve ever walked in there you know that the people there are some of the nicest, knowledgeable, and interesting people on the planet. They’re great salespeople too. Almost every time I walk in there, I go out with a new toy.

The new store front isn’t open yet, so keep walking to its original location.

Nothing screams summer like a tropical cocktail served in one of San Francisco’s most famous tiki bars. And next month, you can do just that.

On Thursday, the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar announced via Instagram that it would reopen for nightly service every Friday and Saturday on July 9th. Details were thin, but Eater reports that once the restaurant and bar are fully open, diners can expect to be seated on a first come, first served basis. And yes, the thunderstorms are coming again.

The famous Tiki bar, located in the Fairmont San Francisco Hotel, has been temporarily closed since March 2020 when the pandemic shutdowns began and has not yet shared any updates on its social media channels. On Instagram, the Tonga Room wrote that it plans to share more while counting to the bar reopening.

With warmer days and a newly opened San Francisco, the expected return of the Tonga Room is a sign that nature is healing. Just try not to get overwhelmed by excitement and end up in the bar pool.

Aspen trees in full autumn foliage spray the sky over Hart Prairie in shades of gold on Wednesday afternoon. The turn of the year lasts for at least another week.

Autumn in Flagstaff is a magical sight. It really is one of the best places in Arizona to see stunning fall colors. The cool mountain air, the radiant sky, seemingly untouched forest meadows and lush aspen forests make leafing through from mid-September in the higher elevations and until the end of November in the lower elevations a top seasonal attraction for locals and visitors.

Because Flagstaff’s autumnal beauty is so incomparable, many of these magical places can be crowded with long lines of cars and swarms of people, all trying to see the gold, red, and orange tones. Some, like the ever-popular Lockett Meadow and West Fork in Oak Creek, can quickly turn into nightmare, attracting hundreds of people each day. But those aren’t the only options. Numerous other spots that are easily accessible on foot allow leaf-gazers to skip the long waiting times and bask in the autumn colors without the crowds.

Not only can hiking offer a better experience, but research shows that just a 30-minute walk can improve both your mental and physical health. Remember to wear light layers to ensure comfort throughout the day as temperatures can change drastically. Don’t forget to pack water, snacks and a camera!

Explore these trails and destinations for an enchanting glimpse of the fall colors:

Raise your glass and sing a song of celebration! It’s time for a toast. We asked Atlas Obscura readers to send us their funniest, most heartfelt, most memorable drinking salutes, and our cup runneth over.

We received hundreds of submissions. They include old-country sayings passed down through multiple generations, goofy toasts heard at the local bar, and (unprintable) blue rhymes your embarrassing grandpa trots out on holidays. Many celebrate togetherness, or triumphing over a world that’s trying to keep you down, but nearly all of them are unforgettable.

Fill your glass and check out some of our favorite submissions below. You might just pick up a few new ways to salute your crew. But either way, just for reading, here’s to you!

To Your Health

May your beautiful lips never blister!

“It was my dad’s favorite toast and he was the BEST! Every holiday and party started with that toast and still does, only now the second toast is, ‘here’s to dad!’” — Hedy Schmidtchen, Frederica, Delaware

May you live for as long as you want, and never want for as long as you live!

“This was a toast I’ve seen Bud Abbott (of Abbott and Costello) use many times.” — Greg Firestone, Louisville, Kentucky

Strike hands with me. The glass is brim. The dew is on the heather. And love is good, and life is long, and friends are best together.

“A Scottish toast used in a Quaich Ceremony, for newlyweds. There is another verse after the one above, for the couple. I did not include it here.” — Abbie Jenks, Pelham, Massachusetts

To absent friends, and to ourselves, as no one is likely to concern themselves with our welfare.

“It is a combination of two classic Royal Navy toasts; the former customarily given on Sundays and the latter on Wednesdays. We always toast seated, as is the naval custom.” — lycanthropejeff, Savannah, Georgia

Health to those I love, wealth to those who love me.

— Kitty, United States

I drink to myself and another and may that other be he who drinks to himself and another and may that other be me!

“I have fond memories of my mother often lifting her glass with this toast, many moons ago. I don’t know where or when it originated.” — Gini Kuhn, Denver, Colorado

You’re born in pain, you live in fear, you die alone, Merry Christmas.

“Heard it at a holiday concert of Scottish musicians. So, so Scottish. And you don’t need to wait for Christmas.” — Bob Hicks, Florida

To the Poets, Philosophers, and Wise Men and Women

We lit the candle from both ends, it wouldn’t last the night, but ah my fellows and my friends, the flame it burned so bright.

— Robert Baker, Santa Ynez, California

May the best of the past be the worst of the future.

“Got it from an old friend of mine.” — Roger Steinbrink, New Orleans, Louisiana

To high winds and mermaids!

“It says so much but one might have to think about it for a second to catch its drift. I don’t remember who first shared it with me but it is one I come back to frequently and when I do, my companions often nod their heads in agreement.” — Dorothy Granger, Bloomington, Indiana

Rejoice, and be of good cheer! For THEY are out there, and WE are in here!

“One of Hugh Hefner’s friends announced his arrival at a quiet party with this joyful declaration. I like the idea of old drinking buddies having a close enclave, where knaves are not welcome.” — Scott Myers, Rochester, New York

May our children have wealthy parents.

“Years ago, but as for who or whom… no clue. Seems pretty universal in terms of appeal (which I’ve tested in a number of countries and cultures) and ALWAYS bring out smiles and heads nodding in approval.” — John Fogg, North Garden, Virginia

Here’s to it, and from it, and to it again, and if you don’t do it when you get to it, you may never get to it to do it again!

“I learned it when I was in my 20s, and a ski bum at a resort in Utah called Alta. We called it the ‘Alta Toast.’ It was fun to try to say when inebriated.” — Leah Sanford, West Valley City, Utah

To the confusion of our enemies!

“I don’t remember where I first heard, or read, about it.
To the regiment! [Group replies] I wish I was there!

“When I lived in Beijing, a group of my British and Irish mates there used to use this as a toast. One of the English guys just started saying it and it caught on. I didn’t know what it meant, or where he got it from, and we never discussed it. (I’ve just Googled it, and it actually comes from a British sitcom called Early Doors, which takes place in a pub. Even on the show, it was just a toast that some of the characters used, it was never explained.) I just liked the sound of it. It was kind of ridiculous, but fun to say, and it sounded like something a grizzled, stiff upper-lipped British World War II officer might say. There was a camaraderie to it, which chimed in a way with what you experience when you live abroad. In my group, hardly any of us had family with us. Your friends became your family. So I guess—and we would have ridiculed each other for suggesting this—a little toast like this boosted that sense of being in it together. Beijing is a transient city, people are always coming and going. So one by one, those friends moved on, and now we’re all in different places. I haven’t said it for years, and I don’t think I would try it in a new group. It’s all about that place, Beijing, that bar, Paddy O’ Shea’s, those times and that group of friends. And though life is great, there are times when, yes, I wish I was there.” — Iain Shaw, St. Louis, Missouri

Poison all around.

“Friends in France say it. It’s a throwback to the idea that toasting was to cause a mix of fluids to make sure if one glass contained poison, they all now did.” — Jason Nadler, Long Island, New York

Fish, tin, and copper!

“This is a traditional toast from Cornwall, in the U.K. The toast refers to the historical industries of Cornwall, fishing and mining for tin and copper in which my Cornish ancestors were engaged.
“It was the custom in my Polish/Slovak family to toast with na zdravie, which is Slovak for “(to) your health!” A sister-in-law, not yet familiar with this phrase, politely asked why everyone was wishing each other “nice driveway.” It became a favorite family joke.” — Leslie, Texas

Up yours!

“For many years, I worked overseas in the oil industry, in small towns and camps in 10 or 15 different countries. I was often the only American in my company housing. We bachelors were usually housed in shared accommodation, so I was often sitting around in the evening with people of several different nationalities. The after-dinner recreation often turned to drinking and the conversation sometimes turned to ‘What’s the common toast in your country?’ As the answers went around the room, the Frenchman saying “A votre Santé,” the Finn saying “Kippis”, the Irishman saying “Sláinte,” the Brit saying “Cheers,” I did not want to admit that we Americans just copied the Brits and said “Cheers.” After all, I’m not just the only American in the room. I’m a Texan. So when the conversation came round to me, I raised my glass and said “I’m from Texas, and in Texas, we say ‘Up yours!’” — Don Pollock, Austin, Texas

“My father-in-law John Sadowski, long retired, was a hard working man. He liked to unwind at the end of his work day by sitting in front of his garage and drinking beer. Welcoming all to join him in his relaxation routine, when asked how many had he had, his answer was always the same, ‘First one today!’ When I married into the family, it was a rite of passage to learn this traditional Sadowski toast. When we travel, we make an effort to learn how say these three words in other languages (ie: Erste Heute, Le Premier du jour, Primo per Oggi). Ultimately, it is a reminder of the love of family and friends, celebrating together, around the world!” — Wally Walsh, Long Island, New York

Fisherman’s Wharf
Scoma’s is one of the most classic seafood restaurants in SF, serving “pier-to-plate” dishes from local fishermen who bring their daily catch straight to the restaurant’s pier. That, of course, means your best bet is to order what’s just rolled up, including the cioppino with dungeness crab, scallops, prawns, clams, mussels, and the market fish. But no judgment, sometimes you just want a really good fish fillet sandwich, and when that happens Scoma’s – made with fresh flounder and served with fennel salad, lettuce and fries – is always just the thing. Whatever you order, you’ll enjoy it both indoors and outdoors with a view of the water (especially as long as the al fresco dining is maintained in the waterfront parking lot). And you can even enjoy it at the weekend brunch where you can find a very overdone Bloody Mary that is almost a meal in itself.
How to book: Reservations are possible at Howl.

All the drama in the 2021 NFL Draft started with the number 3 overall standings the San Francisco 49ers traded for the Miami Dolphins, and it cost a small fortune to do so. Everyone knew the Niners did it to pick a quarterback, but no one knew which one had the eye of GM John Lynch and Coach Kyle Shanahan. It turned out to be the roughest of the five first-round QBs at Trey Lance, which absolutely means the 49ers plan on reigning Jimmy Garoppolo to take center stage this year. William Hill Sportsbook gives San Francisco an Over / Under of 10 wins, while the SportsLine projection model predicts 9.6.

If the Niners had taken the much more pro-able Alabama Mac Jones in third place overall or even Ohio state’s Justin Fields, perhaps Jimmy G would be playing in New England at this point.

However, Lance, who started just one season at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State, means that Lance will likely get a Redshirt year in 2021, much like Patrick Mahomes did as a rookie at Kansas City. Unless, of course, Garoppolo gets injured or the 49ers are terribly out of the gate.

SportsLine odds makers put Garoppolo as the -400 favorite to start Week 1 and Lance at +250. Lance is +650 to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

San Francisco is a 7.5 point favorite for the season opener in Detroit. This is the third time in the Super Bowl era that the Niners opened en route against the Lions. The last two times came in 1981 and 1984, and SF won the Super Bowl both times.

The Niners were one of the big disappointments of last season 6-10, largely due to injuries. Garoppolo only played six games and didn’t do very well on those with a 92.4 rating. The Niners were 3-3 in those games. In defense, the team played without Star Pass rushers Nick Bosa (knee) and Dee Ford (back) for most of the season.

In the free agency, San Francisco was able to re-sign Trent Williams on a six-year $ 138.06 million deal that will make him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. Former Pro Bowl Center Alex Mack was signed out of the Falcons. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk agreed to a five-year $ 27 million contract that guaranteed $ 10 million. That’s crazy money for a full-back, but the Niners use their full-backs more than any other team.

The 49ers’ 2021 schedule is considered the 19th toughest in the league as their 17 opponents – the Bengals visit is their 17th game – played a total of 132-138-2 last season.

San Francisco 49ers Trends / William Hill Sportsbook odds
