Don't get too excited by the title of the new Norwegian film, “Sex.” The act itself is actually only briefly discussed in this fascinating film, the first in a new trilogy from writer-director Dag Johan Haugerud, relying mostly on the words and descriptions of the main characters rather than much visual information. Haugerud, winner of the Europa Cinemas label for best European film in the Panorama section of the current Berlin Film Festival, where it had its world premiere this week, has announced this as the first of three films – “Sex, Dreams” and then “Love” – with the same cast and which, overall, will explore themes of desire, identity and freedom, not to mention sexuality and the place of gender in our lives and society. This first standalone film also leans heavily on masculinity in ways not usually discussed by men, but here they do in a profound way in this thought-provoking film that also puts Norway's most famous city, Oslo, in the spotlight.

Haugerud's dialogue-driven script is full of monologues delivered in conversational dialogues with either two male colleagues (never named) from a chimney sweeping company and/or their wives. It begins with the boss (Thorbjørn Harr) telling an unseen person about a dream in which he encounters David Bowie, who thinks he is a woman. The dream is described in detail and clearly disturbs him, as he has never experienced such a vivid depiction of gender, his sex and his image from the perspective of others, in such a graphic situation, whether in a dream or not. The camera soon reveals that he is not speaking to a therapist (my first thought) but to a colleague (Jan Gunnar Røise), who then decides, albeit hesitantly at first, to tell of a recent real-life encounter he had with a man in the kitchen of a house where he was working on the chimney, a stranger who, he says, saw him as an object of desire and asked him point blank if he wanted to have sex with him. He tells his colleague that he immediately refused – they are both married – but that he quickly returned after leaving and, he says, ended up having sex with the man. What's more, he even tells his wife (Siri Forberg) all about it in a matter-of-fact way afterwards.

More from Deadline

One can imagine that the story didn't go down well, and for the rest of the 2 hours and 5 minutes, her character is all about becoming more and more deeply disturbed about what this all means, not just for their marriage, but for her, her family, and whether her husband is actually gay. In these intimate and lengthy conversations, he assures everyone that just because he did it once with a man doesn't mean he's an alcoholic. Harr's character also confesses to his wife (a more understanding Birgitte Larsen) his own strange dreams in which David Bowie sees him as a woman, and has to digest the fact that this has more of an impact on his marriage than on his lifelong understanding of his identity and the way he is seen.

Once we're past these heavy, if sometimes tedious, discussions, Haugerud manages to lighten things up a bit, as Harr's character takes his son Hans Petter (Adrian Jenure Skaaland) to a doctor (a wonderfully incisive and natural Anne Marie Ottersen) to examine the boy's injured hand, but at the same time asks her about his own ailments. In a somewhat whimsical way, she begins a story about two young gay men, one of whom is seriously ill. Haugerud suddenly thrusts us into flashbacks to tell this story within a story. I, for one, was glad to get out of the claustrophobic conversations sparked by the chimney sweeps' revelations and into something else, anything else. The slow and deliberate pacing, with minimal camera movement in so many scenes between them and their wives, makes everything seem longer than it is.

Aside from that, Sex is full of wry observations about human behavior and life's unanswered questions about who we really are. The superbly chosen actors, especially Røise and Harr, tell the story in a subdued, almost deadpan style. The camerawork, which also puts Oslo himself in the spotlight, is masterfully executed by Cecile Semec. And as befits such a profound film, it all ends with a musical dance sequence – of course – in which Harr's character performs on stage with his choir while Røise's character and his entire family, now seemingly content to carry on with their lives as before, watch from the audience. No explanations are needed, but perhaps we'll get one as the trilogy moves into the next chapter.

Producers are Yngve Saether and Hege Hauff Hvattum.

Inspired by the debut of Leo Villareal’s The Bay Lights, San Francisco Travel launched the festival in 2013 to brighten the longest nights of the year. Illuminate SF has grown since its inception from six to 62 temporary and permanent eco-friendly light art installations created by a diverse array of acclaimed international and local artists, including Olaf Eliasson, Jenny Holzer, Daniel Libeskind, Jorge Pardo and Jerry van Eyck, along with San Francisco Bay-based Jim Campbell, Johanna Grawunder, Dorka Keehn other Brian Goggins.

Illuminate SF light art installations can be experienced across the city from the Embarcadero to the Inner Sunset, North Beach to Bayview, and while flying in or out of san francisco International Airport (SFO). The works come to life at dusk, turning evenings into an illuminating adventure, especially when combined with exploring San Francisco’s world-class restaurants, nightlife, cultural events and holiday activations.

“There is nothing like celebrating the festive season in San Francisco’s captivating glow,” said San Francisco Travel President and CEO Joe D’Alessandro. “The city has one of the country’s most extensive collections of light art, and this holiday season Illuminate SF will be even bigger and brighter. And in keeping with San Francisco’s ethos of inclusivity and accessibility, nearly 80% of the light art installations are free for visitors and residents to enjoy.”

“We are thrilled to be the presenting sponsor for this year’s Illuminate SF and to showcase our majestic wind baffles that light The Parks at 5 M,” said Christie Donnelly, Director of Development for Brookfield Properties. “The Illuminate SF lighted art tour starts at 5 M and is quintessentially san franciscouniting community through arts, culture and experience.”

Spectacular New Additions to the Illuminate SF Festival of Light
The Wind-Baffles: The iconic wind baffle structures that anchor The Parks at 5 Ma new, vibrant community connected to the surrounding fabric of San Francisco’s SOMA District by a cohesive network of public spaces, are the brainchild of Jerry van Eyck, founder of !melk, an award-winning urban design and landscape architecture firm. Built to mitigate wind, the baffles or “wind breakers” are artfully illuminated from the outside and complemented with a soft glow that radiates through the perforations in the upper zones. Though made from steel, a material associated with heaviness and industry, the baffles are often referred to as “flowers” for their stem and leaf-like design elements. Come nightfall they transform into breathtaking sculptures and suddenly seem to float.

Helical Trace: A permanent installation inside the new LUMA Hotel in Mission Bay, Helical Trace is local artist Jim Campbell’s latest contribution to San Francisco’s Light Art Trail. The dynamic light installation can be seen from the street through the lobby’s floor-to-ceiling three-story windows. The prolific artist who installed Day for Night atop the Salesforce Tower created this striking installation that looks different from every angle and uses the reflection of the windows to amplify its movement. At a distance, the helix form gives the illusion of water across light. The figures within climb an infinite stretch of waterfall, allowing Campbell to create delight out of physical struggle.

Franchise Freedom: Immersive Arts Alliance will bring the acclaimed aerial light performance Franchise Freedom to san francisco for five nights beginning Jan 12. Created by internationally renowned Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta of DRIFT, Franchise Freedom is comprised of 600 illuminated drones that will fly from Treasure Island over the San Francisco Bay towards the Embarcadero, allowing visibility along the shorelines in san francisco, Sausalito, Emeryville other Berkeley.
Lucy in the Sky: One of two new light art installations joining the City’s extensive Civic Arts Collection, Erwin Redls Lucy in the Sky is a landmark artwork in the city’s new Central Subway (first opening for weekend service on Nov 19). Located in the Union Square/Market Street Station, the immersive installation is comprised of over 500 translucent 10 x 10-inch light panels, each containing an array of color LEDs. The panels are suspended along the entire length of the concourse level’s ceiling, spanning nearly 670 feet. Installed in a diamond-shaped pattern, the light panels are computer programmed to slowly change color and display simple patterns, creating a kaleidoscopic experience.

Untitled: Along the Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit (VN-BRT) Geary Street Station’s north and southbound boarding platforms, Jorge Pardos lighting sculpture brings a pop of whimsical light and color. Hung from the ceiling, this intricate neon artwork (featuring the word “peace” in Farsi “صلح”) explores the cultural taboos that reflect on gender and political authority through Talepasand’s lens as an Iranian-American woman.

A single beacon of light glows from within a suspended steel cube, producing immersive patterns that ripple and change as visitors move through the space. Similarly, Agha’s Teardrop (after Robert Irvin) interweaves delicate, traditional Islamic decorative geometric patterns and architecture with modern materials. The work is inspired by jaalis (intricate, carved screens), which cast moving shadows as the sun rises and falls.

San Francisco music festivals don’t get much more beloved than Stern Grove.

Now in its 85th year, the free summer concert series has been a staple in the Bay Area, but its status was put in jeopardy last year after a flood severely damaged the park grounds. Thankfully, renovations are nearing completion, and the reopening party is going to be one to remember.

The June 12 kickoff features two historic Bay Area acts — rap legend Too $hort and prolific horn section Tower of Power — both of whom were originally scheduled to perform for the 2021 season finale. The rest of the lineup was announced in unconventional (and accidental) fashion with an advertisement on Muni.

Traditionally, the Stern Grove concerts were first come, first served. As a result, attendees would arrive in the early morning hours to secure a parcel of grass for picnic blankets and coolers. That changed with the pandemic, which led the organizers to launch an online reservation system. Tickets are still free, and go on sale 12 days before each show, with additional tickets released throughout the week prior to the event.

Ticket reservations will open for the June 12 event at 2 pm at Stern Grove’s website.

The Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival is coming back to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park this summer after the 2021 edition was pushed back to October because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A limited number of “Eager Beaver” tickets went on sale Wednesday for the festival taking place between Aug. 5-7. General admission three-day tickets, starting at $359 apiece, and VIP three-day tickets, which went for $799, were quickly sold out.

Some three-day tickets remain for the most expensive package, Golden Gate Club in collaboration with Ken Fulk, which promises an “ultra-luxe festival experience” including fine dining and front stage viewing for a whopping $4,495 per person.

Heads up, foodies: I’m now sending alerts every time I publish a story. Sign up for texts from me here. Thanks to those of you who’ve already subscribed and offered your thoughts!

… While many festivals and local events are returning this year, one beloved local institution’s future is uncertain. The Gilroy Garlic Festival Board announced Friday that the annual festival has been canceled indefinitely. The organization cited lingering concerns from the pandemic and prohibitively expensive insurance required by the city of Gilroy, to the tune of $1 million. The festival is normally held over the last weekend in July to celebrate the stinking rose in all its delicious iterations, from classics like garlic fries to unconventional creations like garlic ice cream. This is a sad end to an event that families have cherished for more than 40 years and has earned the small farm community of Gilroy international recognition. We all remember the tragic mass shooting at the 2019 festival, when a 19-year-old Gilroy native killed three people and wounded 17 others before turning the gun on himself. It would be extremely difficult for an event to hold the same place in the community’s heart after such horror, but after canceling the festival in 2020, the organizers gamely held a drive-through version over three weekends in July 2021.

“The festival is part of our heritage. Now we must ensure that it is part of our future,” the organizers said in the announcement. While they believe that the festival will never be a massive event, they hope to create a smaller, more intimate local iteration. Several companion fundraisers will be held throughout the summer, including a golf tournament, a concert at Clos La Chance Winery and a farm-to-table dinner. Visit gilroygarlicfestivalassociation.com for more information…

The Felton and Scotts Valley farmers markets reopen the first week of May.

(Kevin Painchaud / Lookout Santa Cruz)

… Next week, we welcome back the seasonal Felton and Scotts Valley farmers markets. Located off of Highway 9 in downtown Felton, the Felton farmers market reopens a week from Tuesday, and will run every Tuesday from 1 pm to 6 pm through October. In addition to organic fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers, artisanal bread, seafood, meat, eggs and other staple foods, the market has expanded its food truck rotation with an emphasis on highlighting cultural, hard-to-find foods. Scrumptious Fish & Chips will be there every week, and Dos Hermanos Pupuseria, Mattia Pizza Truck and Rogue Pye will rotate.

The Scotts Valley farmers market starts up again next Saturday, May 7, from 9 am to 1 pm, and will run every Saturday morning through Thanksgiving. Find it at its new home, off Scotts Valley Drive in the Boys & Girls Club parking lot. Visitors will find an abundant selection from regional farms and food businesses, and regular pop-ups by Chicken Foot and Dos Hermanos Pupuseria. New this year, Watsonville-based Hidden Fortress Coffee will sell breakfast favorites like French toast, pancakes, bacon and sausage in addition to its small-batch, organic roasted coffee and espresso.

Both markets will celebrate opening day with free strawberry shortcakes to visitors, made with fresh local strawberries and whipped cream on Beckmann’s Bakery shortbread. Doesn’t that sound like a sweet way to kick off summer? More info at santacruzfarmersmarket.org …

Phil’s Fish Market & Eatery will move from its location on Sandholdt Road in Moss Landing.

(Via Facebook)

… Concerned community members took to social media when it was revealed that Phil’s Fish Market & Eatery will be leaving its current location in Moss Landing. Fans feared that the beloved restaurant and fish market would be closing for good after news broke that the neighboring Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute is planning to expand and will demolish the restaurant in order to build a new two-story, 33,000-square-foot marine research facility in its spot on Sandholdt Road. But the reports of Phil’s demise were greatly exaggerated, with Phil DiGirolamo himself clearing the air. While it is true that the establishment is planning to move, “We will not be closing,” DiGirolamo insisted in a Facebook post. DiGirolamo and MBARI are working together to find another suitable location before the move, so no one has to say goodbye to Phil’s famous cioppino, clam chowder or crab cakes.

If you haven’t had the opportunity yet, I highly recommend stopping by Blossom’s Farmstand & Coffeeshop next time you’re in Corralitos. The rose-colored adobe building is full to the brim with local goodies, including fresh produce, eggs, local art, Blossom’s own line of fermented foods – I adore its vegan kimchi – and its herbal apothecary. The coffee shop serves warm drinks, baked goods and homemade savory snacks. Discover why this local spot is so special in last week’s Eaters Digest.

This might be appealing to only a small portion of readers, but if you, by chance, are looking for an easy and delicious way to prepare beets, I have a great recipe for you. I love beets when I eat them in restaurants, but until recently rarely prepared them at home because I couldn’t find a preparation that gave me the results I wanted – beets with a tangy, pickled flavor, free from their ruddy skin with a tender , rich texture – that was so easy. I finally found that recipe, and it’s so simple. To make it, wash your beets and trim off the stem end, then poach them in a mixture of one part vinegar with four parts water until you can pierce them easily all the way through. Poaching is a fancy way of saying to cook them in liquid at a low temperature. In this case, the beets should be submerged or nearly submerged in the vinegar/water mixture, and kept at a low simmer, covered with a lid, for about an hour. Feel free to mix up the type of vinegar and add some aromatics, depending on what you’re using them for. I used a cup of red wine vinegar and added a clove of crushed garlic, a palmful of peppercorns and a couple of bay leaves.

Once they’re done cooking and have cooled, you can slough the skin off with a paper towel. You will definitely make a mess – and beets stain, so be prepared. Chop them up and they’ll keep in a closed container in the fridge for a week, ready to liven up your office salad. I actually blended some into homemade tomato soup and it was surprisingly good. The sky’s the limit!

Billed as one of the largest cultural gatherings of its kind on the West Coast, the 55th annual Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates San Francisco’s Japanese food, music and rich history over two weekends, starting Saturday, April 9 and continuing through April 17.

Each year, tens of thousands of attendees indulge in some of the tastiest street food bites on offer at over a dozen vendor booths, run by various nonprofit organizations in the Bay Area that provide support to Asian communities. (In addition to food booths, many of Japantown’s favorite restaurants will stay open during the festivities.)

One of those booths is Kimochi, Inc., a senior service agency that has operated in Japantown since July 1971. In addition to caring for elders in the community through nutrition, recreation and transportation services, Kimochi is back this year, nourishing festival-goers with its highly sought-after Teri Burger for $8.

Kimochi executive director Steve Ishii, who has worked for the nonprofit for 45 years, told SFGATE that the Teri Burger was created because they wanted to offer something tasty for younger festival attendees, alongside the more traditional foods — such as tamasen and bowls of piping hot udon — sold at other vendor tents.

With the help of a trained chef from Japan who worked for the nonprofit’s nutrition program, Ishii says they developed a homemade teriyaki sauce that many have tried — but failed — to replicate through the years.

“For the two weekends, we generally anticipate around 6,000 burgers for all four days,” Ishii said. “It’s a whole production, but not only for ourselves, but for all of the nonprofits in the community in general. Participating in Cherry Blossom is sometimes our only way of fundraising.”

Kimochi volunteers will grill about 6,000 signature Teri Burgers during this year’s Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival.

Couresty of Kimochi, Inc.

The festival is one of the biggest opportunities for many participating nonprofits to raise money toward its annual funds, and that’s why attendees will not see any commercial businesses selling food or other items within the festival proper during the celebration.

“I’m not sure of any other festivals that happen in the city where the food vendors are 100% nonprofit groups,” said Bradley Menda, the food bazaar committee co-chair for the Cherry Blossom Festival. “These are all community organizations making or serving specialty items that they’ve been doing for many, many years.”

As one of the busiest food tents each year, Ishii estimates that in one day, he has about 30 to 40 volunteers help at the Kimochi booth, located on Webster and Post streets. Besides the smoky aromas of barbecue patties billowing from Kimochi’s tent, there’s a rotating array of grillmasters flipping burgers and toasting buns. Others form an assembly line to top the sizzling patties with freshly chopped lettuce, tomato, onion and, of course, the secret teriyaki sauce.

“The secret sauce is doused over the meat. Our Teri Burgers are, we call it a sloppy burger, because there’s a lot of the teriyaki sauce that we put on there. That’s historically what everyone has craved,” Ishii said. “We’ve had some people come from Vallejo and just wait for us to start up. They’ll order like 10 to 20 burgers so that they can just take it home and have it amongst the family. So that’s nice, there’s a following for these burgers.”

Courtesy of David Adams

Besides the Teri Burger, festival attendees can expect a variety of sweet and savory eats such as Spam musubi from the Boy Scouts Pack and Troop 58, deep-fried gyoza and Oreos from the Japanese Community Youth Council, shaved ice and fried mochi from Kagami Kai , takoyaki from Soto Mission (Sokoji) and much more, so save room.

“The food, to me, it’s instrumental. The fact that people could either walk around and enjoy the festivities, the arts and crafts, the foods, the stage — it just gives them nourishment to see all of the festival,” Ishii said. “Every festival should have a food area. It’s a nice day and I think a lot of people want to stay and enjoy everything the Cherry Blossom festival brings.”

The 55th annual Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival takes place over two weekends, starting on Saturday, April 9, through April 17 in San Francisco’s Japantown.

In the sign of the times, the Sundance Film Festival announced today that it will go live in 2022.

The original plan was to hold the prestigious indie festival founded by Robert Redford in 1981 in a hybrid form, with a combination of online events and “personal Utah elements”. Unfortunately, all that has changed with the Omicron variant. This is what the organizers say in the announcement:

“We were looking forward to our first full hybrid Sundance Film Festival and our teams spent a year planning a festival like no other. But despite the most ambitious protocols, the Omicron variant, with its unexpectedly high transmission rates across the country, is reaching the limits of health security, travel and other infrastructures. And so we announce today: The personal Utah elements of the festival will go online this year. “

…

“While it is a huge loss not to have a personal experience in Utah, we don’t believe it is safe or doable while overwhelming thousands of artists, audiences, staff, volunteers and partners from around the world for Eleven Day Festival Communities are already struggling to provide basic services. “

The Sundance Film Festival – a program organized by the nonprofit Sundance Institute – is scheduled to begin Thursday, January 2022, and last eleven days.

Like so many arts organizations here in the San Francisco Bay Area and around the country (and in the world), Covid has been an ubiquitous and daunting challenge to live programming.

We hope that these nonprofits can continue to navigate these troubled waters and soon enough achieve the semblance of normalcy we are all looking for.
