KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KWCH) – Wichita State’s furious comeback and its bid for the Hall of Fame Classic title both fell a basket short in a 67-63 loss to San Francisco, Tuesday afternoon at the T-Mobile Center.

After cutting a 13-point deficit to two over the last five minutes of the second half, WSU (3-2) came up empty on three different opportunities to tie or take the lead. Jaykwon Walton hit 8-of-11 shots and set new career highs with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Craig Porter Jr. scored 16 points on 5-of-20 shooting and stuffed the box score with nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and a pair of blocks in 38 minutes. Gus Okafor added 10 points and seven boards. San Francisco (6-0) shot 39.3% from the field but knocked down 12-of-34 threes. Josh Kunen was a perfect 5-for-5 from deep on his way to a team-high 15 points. Tyrell Roberts handed out seven assists in 37 turnover-free minutes.

WSU trailed 27-14 with less than 4:00 to play in the opening half after missing 21 of its first 26 shots but finished the half on a 9-0 run. Porter rebounded his own miss and hit a twisting corner three ahead of the halftime buzzer to send the Shockers into the locker room down just 27-23. USF bridged halftime with an eight-minute scoring drought before sinking five shots in a row to build its lead back to double-digits. Hawthorne hit a three for a 60-47 USF advantage with 6:22 to play in the game. WSU ramped up its rebounding and full-court pressure down the stretch and finally made some shots.

Walton and Okafor hit back-to-back threes to key a 10-0 run over a span of less than two minutes. After driving for a layup, Porter stole a pass near midcourt and fed Walton for a dunk to cut the deficit to 60-57 with still 3:20 to go. The Shockers twice missed three-pointers that would have tied the game. USF’s Kunen sank his fifth triple of the day with 1:27 to go to push the Don lead back to 63-57. Again WSU responded. Okafor put back a missed free throw with just a under a minute left to make it a two-point game, 63-61.

Following a defensive stop, the Shockers took possession with 32 seconds remaining but turned it over when a driving Walton lost his footing and the ball. USF iced the game at the free throw line.

The Shockers return to action Saturday, Nov. 26, against Tarleton State.

Veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo entered the Week 18 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams knowing full well that this could have been his last game as a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

What followed was a comeback for the ages and adding at least one more game to Jimmg GQ’s career. Garoppolo trailed 17-0 at the end of the second quarter and looked utterly lost in a game they had to win. Garoppolo led the 49ers back to a 27-24 overtime win.

With the win, San Francisco heads to Big D to face the Dallas Cowboys in Sunday afternoon’s NFC Wild Card Playoffs.

Related: NFL Playoff and Super Bowl Predictions

At a meeting with the media on Wednesday, Garoppolo admitted his uncertain future has weighed on him all season.

“It’s always in the back of my mind,” Garoppolo told reporters. “It really was in mine all season. I knew what season it was, knew everything that was and wasn’t going on behind the scenes. It was a little bit different.”

Related: Brave Predictions for 49ers Cowboys NFC Wild Card Game

Jimmy Garoppolo’s future remains clouded ahead of the NFL playoffs

January 9, 2022; Inglewood, California, United States; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (10) celebrates as he leaves the field after defeating the Los Angeles Rams in overtime of the game at SoFi Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

A few months earlier, the 49ers had exhausted two prospective first-round picks and a third-round pick to trade for quarterback Trey Lance. You’re not trading that capital unless you expect the quarterback to start sooner rather than later.

With Garoppolo injured (thumbs) in Week 17, Lance helped the 49ers stay in the playoff race with a 23-7 win over the Houston Texans. In that game, the small-school product completed 16 of 23 passes while rushing for 280 yards on two touchdowns. For some, this may have been the beginning of “Trey Area” in Santa Clara.

In fact, many called for Garoppolo to be benched at halftime against the Rams last week before the veteran made a comeback for the ages.

Related: Bold Predictions for the NFL Wild Card Playoffs

What does this mean for the Super Bowl quarterback? It’s cloudier than ever.

On the one hand, Garoppolo has a $26.91 million cap hit for next season. San Francisco escapes by saving more than $25 million. For his part, Lance’s cap hit is just $7.75 million. From a financial and team building perspective, it makes sense for San Francisco to trade or release Garoppolo.

All of this is complicated by the fact that these 49ers with Garoppolo under center had a ton more success than other quarterbacks during the Kyle Shanahan era.

Record with Jimmy Garoppolo: 31-14

Record without Jimmy Garoppolo: 8-26

Those are some absolutely absurd splits right there.

Realistically, Garoppolo’s future could depend on what happens in Dallas on Sunday and possibly progressing in the playoffs.

Much like we saw after the 49ers’ performance in the Super Bowl in February 2020, a deep run in the playoffs would make it difficult for San Francisco to leave Garoppolo. Recall that a month after the Super Bowl appearance, the team’s leadership decided against going after Tom Brady.

As for Garoppolo, he wants to continue as long as possible.

“These guys on this team, I love this team. i love the players i love everything about it It’s a good group to be here, a fun group. We want to keep this thing going for as long as possible,” the quarterback said.

OAKLAND (CBS SF / BCN) – It’s finally here: Oakland officials say they expect to release the final environmental impact report on the proposed new stadium for the Oakland A’s at the Howard Terminal on Friday morning.

The report is expected to be posted on the city’s website at 8:00 a.m. City officials will recommend that the Oakland Planning Commission certify the report and send it to the city council for approval.

CONTINUE READING: Former Atherton school assistant, babysitter advocates no appeal against child pornography charges

The planning commission will take up this recommendation on January 19th and the city council can approve the report in February.

“The release of the final environmental impact report is an important milestone in our journey to building a new waterfront ballpark area that will create up to 18 acres of beautiful public parks, more affordable housing and good jobs for Oaklanders,” said Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.

Oakland A released renders of their planned new ballpark at Howard Terminal near Jack London Square in Oakland (courtesy Bjarke Ingels Group)

“The 3,500-page document is thorough and comprehensive and ensures that the project is environmentally friendly and sustainable,” said Schaaf. “The completion of the EIR also keeps us on track to bring the 2022 project to the final vote in the city council – and brings us one step closer to keeping our beloved A’s rooted in Oakland.”

The final EIR does not contain any “material” new information and does not need to be re-circulated, thereby delaying a vote on it.

A’s proposal not only envisages a new stadium with around 35,000 seats, but also apartments, a hotel and a performance venue with 3,500 seats as well as commercial space.

The entire development would be on approximately 55 acres in the Jack London Square area.

CONTINUE READING: School districts warn of threatening campuses from TikTok challenges; Gilroy HS cancels Friday courses as a preventive measure

The approval of the overall project consists of an environmental assessment, project assessment and project agreements. The city and the A’s are well advanced in the approval process, although the A’s are considering moving the team to Las Vegas.

A’s President Dave Kaval has said it’s Howard Terminal for the A’s or they are moving out of Oakland.

The approval of the final environmental impact assessment by the city council would complete the environmental assessment process.

City officials are waiting for the A’s to revise the plans and present them to the city as part of the project appraisal process. The two now draft and negotiate the project agreements, which are of a financial nature.

A lawsuit could delay the project, but for a limited time. Assembly Bill 734 sets a limit for the duration of a lawsuit over the project.

Frequent questions raised by the draft EIR included railroad safety, parking, bridges over the railroad tracks near the proposed park, and questions about why a ballpark cannot be built at the Oakland Coliseum site. City officials answered any of the questions or concerns.

Answers to these questions were not available on Thursday, but the answers will be part of the final EIR released on Friday. More than 400 comments were made on the draft EIR.

The Oakland A’s did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the publication of the final EIR on Thursday afternoon.

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – The Little Italy neighborhood of San Jose is the newest community to face problems due to the combination of COVID and nearby homeless camps.

“People see that and then turn around and drive back in their car. We don’t want that, ”says Pino Spatola, the owner of the Paisano restaurant.

CONTINUE READING: Walnut Creek Police Arrest Suspected Shoplifter, Bring Back $ 2,000 in Stolen Goods I.

Spatola says aggressive people living in the camps near his restaurant in Paisano have also threatened his workers.

“Outside they started chasing one of my employees. They started pounding on their car, ”Spatola said.

The restaurant is one of the pillars of San Jose’s Little Italy, a two-block community of historic Italian-American houses and shops near the SAP Center. It is also adjacent to the Guadalupe River Park, which has many camps and a large population who live on the river banks.

Squatters have set fire to empty houses in the neighborhood, and neighbors say there are always break-ins and thefts.

It is too much for an Italian language school for children. The owner posted a message on Facebook detailing the combination
of COVID and the homeless problem is “a nightmare”.

CONTINUE READING: Pedestrian was killed by a driver hit and run in San Jose

The school is now permanently closed.

“A safe environment is very important to the school,” said Joshua Devincenzi, president of Little Italy San Jose. “We are of course sad because they were our first shop here in Little Italy.”

He said the loss of the neighborhood school and coffeehouse were recent setbacks, but the community is still making headway.

The police patrols have been strengthened, a local museum is being built and Google is helping with the move of The Poor House Bistro
the free space next to Henry’s Hi Life Restaurant.

“We are not yet finished as a district. We’re still here, we’re still open for business, ”said Devincenzi.

“My business is doing very well,” said Mr. Spatola, who wants to stay in the neighborhood and help Little Italy grow.

Tony Bennett won over generations of fans singing “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”. And on his 95th birthday, the beloved singer left his heart on the stage of Radio City Music Hall. Six months after Bennett and his family announced that he had Alzheimer’s disease, Bennett sang with Lady Gaga to a sold-out audience in a two-concert series billed as his last New York appearances in early August. Related video above: Lady Gaga struggled to “stick together” when Tony Bennett remembered her name Now the rest of the world has a chance to watch the August 3rd moving show in a TV special, “One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, “which aired on Sunday. In addition to his signature song, Bennett played standards such as “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Steppin ‘Out With My Baby” and duets with Lady Gaga including “Love For Sale” and “Anything Goes”. His family members have said that sometimes Bennett doesn’t know where he is or what is going on around him. But on the stage in the TV special, the legendary actor didn’t miss a beat. When Lady Gaga shouted “New York, New York” before Bennett took the stage, Lady Gaga burst into tears when she paused to talk about him. “He’s my friend. He’s my musical companion. And he’s the greatest singer in the whole world. And I’m counting on you, New York, to make him smile. So you better cheer. You better scream. You laugh.” better. You better cry. You better give your soul. ” The Radio City Music Hall audience honored the end of the deal. Bennett got his first standing ovation before he even sang a note – and garnered at least a dozen more cheers over the course of the night. At one point the camera panned to a viewer who shouted, “We love you!” Bennett, whose singing career spanned eight decades, is no stranger to performing in front of throngs of enthusiastic fans. Still, before the concert, family members told “60 Minutes” that they weren’t sure what would happen during the show, knew everything would be fine. “It became himself. It just turned on. It was like a light switch,” she told “60 Minutes” on a segment that aired last month. That’s because music and gigs are so deeply rooted in the singer. According to Bennett’s neurologist Dr. Gayatri Devi. “People react differently depending on their strengths. In Tony’s case, it’s his musical memory, his ability to be a performer. It’s an innate and hardwired part of his brain,” Devi said on “60 minutes.” “Even though he doesn’t know what the day might be or where his apartment is, he can still sing the entire repertoire of the American Songbook and move people.” Bennett released his first album in 2014 with Lady Gaga collaboration which became a Cole Porter- Tribute album entitled “Love For Sale” released. It received six Grammy nominations last week. Following the nominations, Lady Gaga told BBC Radio 2’s “The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show” that it was heartbreaking to see what Bennett is going through. She told “60 Minutes” that Bennett had called her “Sweetheart” every time she saw him since the pandemic started, and she wasn’t sure he knew who she was. But when she got on stage to join him on the radio during the City Music Hall concert, Bennett seemed in no doubt. “Wow,” he said as she swirled around in a shimmering gold dress. “Lady Gaga!” An expression of joy crossed Lady Gaga’s face. She leaned forward, her head in her hands, before making another whirl. “I had to hold it together because we had a sold out show and I had a job to do,” Lady Gaga told 60 Minutes. “But I’m telling you when I went on stage and he said, ‘Lady Gaga’, my friend saw me and it was very special.” After the successful shows at Radio City Music Hall, Bennett said the future tour will stop performing. His son and manager Danny Bennett told Variety that these New York concerts would be his last. “This was a tough decision for us as he is a capable artist. However, this is the direction of the doctors,” said Danny Bennett. “It’s not the singing aspect, it’s more the traveling. Look, he’s getting tired. It is decided that it’s just getting too much for him to give concerts now.” Lady Gaga told 60 Minutes that she was in Bennett’s final appearance at Radio City Music Hall. “It’s not a sad story. It’s emotional. It’s hard to see someone change. I think the beauty of it and what was the challenge is to see how it affects them in some ways, but to see you how it doesn’t affect his talent, “she said. “I think he really pushed through something to give the world the gift of knowing that things can change and you can still be great.”

Nicolas Dromard has worked his way up from the ensemble to the lead role in two high-profile musicals: Wicked, in which he jumped from swing on the first national tour to an acclaimed run as Fiyero in the San Francisco production, and Mary Poppins, in which he jumped from swing in the original Broadway cast to a star-turn as Mary’s chimney sweep buddy Bert. When the show ends on March 3, Broadway.com had a chat with the Canadian-born actor about his emerging career and dream role.

How does it feel to come full circle with Mary Poppins and end the Broadway run as Bert?
Great! It’s such an honor. At first we were shocked and saddened that the show was coming to an end, but six and a half years on Broadway is a great run. The show has an incredible message and it makes the audience so happy. It’s a privilege to say I was the last Bert on Broadway.

What is fun about playing Bert?
I think Bert is one of the best male roles on Broadway. He is the narrator, he sets the mood and he is omnipresent – he is constantly on stage and dancing. What other role can you dance on the ceiling in?

To the right! What is this moment like?
It’s a roller coaster ride. “Step In Time” is my favorite part of the show. There’s an adrenaline rush and I get butterflies in my stomach every time. They trap me and I just do it. It’s such an impressive stunt: I go up a wall and 30 seconds later I’m back down. It’s over so fast! I wish it was longer.

You danced on ceilings all over America. Does the New Amsterdam Theater feel different?
The set is different on tour – the Banks house opens up like a pop-up book, unlike the Broadway set which is a three story house! But coming back to New York was like riding a bike again.

What memories do you have of playing Fiyero in Wicked’s San Francisco Company?
It was so much fun. In 2009 I left Poppins on Broadway to join Wicked. Fiyero is a dream role because you can kiss the blonde, kiss the green, swing on a rope and bow! Bert is a beast compared to Fiyero. It’s very physical.

You were also on The Boy From Oz ten years ago. Any good Hugh Jackman stories for us?
He’s just great and I want to work with him again. He’s so excited; I’ve never seen anyone work that hard before. And his dressing room was always open – when your mom and dad came backstage after the show, he chatted with them.

You were born and raised in Ottawa, Canada and didn’t speak English until you were seven. Are you still fluent in French?
Oh yes, with my family. My grandmother doesn’t speak a word of English, but my parents do. You translated for the Canadian government.

At what age did you lose your French accent?
I still have a slight French accent, but I can hide it. It still comes out when I’m tired or have had a glass or two of wine.

You’ve played squeaky clean roles for quite a while now. Desire to be bad?
Naturally! I would love to play in Jersey Boys and play Tommy DeVito.

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 conference set the schedule for their final football weekend.

The conference announced on Sunday that its teams will play six games, including Washington ranked 16th in Southern California in Friday’s Pac-12 championship game.

Oregon will face number 21 Colorado on Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum in Southern California. The winner of this game could slip into a postponed title game if the Trojans or Huskies are unable to play due to COVID-19 issues.

Saturday’s games also include Washington State in Utah, Stanford at UCLA and Arizona State in Oregon State. Arizona will meet California at a time and place to be determined. The Wildcats sacked coach Kevin Sumlin on Saturday after losing to the state of Arizona.

The Pac-12 left the schedule open for the last weekend of the season to have flexibility in a year when the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in cancellations and postponements across the country.

USC secured a spot in the Pac-12 title game for the first time since 2017 by beating rivals UCLA 43-38 on Saturday.

Washington won its third Pac-12 North title in five years with a 38-21 win over Colorado.

The conference went to a home-hosted model for that season’s championship game.

Further coverage of the cancellation of the Cal game on Saturday and the opponent from Saturday this week in the Daily News in print and online.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – Scenes from the most bizarre New Year’s Eve ever – closed beach parking lots where crowds would normally gather, quiet Union Square, connected hotels, and empty restaurants and bars.

Everywhere you looked on the last day of the year it seemed like a reminder that 2020 was a year like no other.

So it was significant that the only crowd that ABC7’s Kris Reyes found was not for a celebration, but for the ceremonial closing of a San Francisco landmark.

RELATED: Here’s a look back at the San Francisco New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show from years past

The Cliff House sign came down in front of a tearful crowd and officially closed the restaurant after 157 years.

END OF AN ERA: The sign went down in San Francisco’s iconic Cliff House restaurant. The restaurant announced this month that it will be permanently closed after 157 years. From shipwrecks and a fire to the 1906 earthquake, the Cliff House saw it all. https://t.co/U4gUBeXqeX pic.twitter.com/QV6hNFPvQ1

– ABC7 News (@ abc7newsbayarea) December 31, 2020

“I’m actually glad we had the earthquake this morning. We took that off our disaster bingo card, but it’s so indescribably sad that the Cliff House is closing,” said Jonathan Alloy, who was married at the Cliff House Has.

“I think we won’t take a break until 12:01 pm,” said another spectator who was crying when the sign came down.

There will also be no fireworks, instead many will be at home. The programming is unlike anything we’ve ever had – virtual concerts and ball drops, online chats, a socially distant stroll in the open air.
Even so, there are always those who find the bright spots. Semaj Temple said she was grateful for the 2020 lessons and all the free time she had with them.

“I look forward to all of the new things that will come with change and how I can adapt to those things,” she said.

Back at the Cliff House, accepting change is not that easy. The crowd lingered there for a while, taking in a sight that will not extend into the New Year.

“I don’t think things will go back to normal, I don’t think things will ever go back to normal,” said Tom Hontalas, who owned Loui’s, another popular San Francisco restaurant that was closed from the pandemic.

He remains hopeful, but until 2020 he has a simple farewell: “Good liberation.”
