George Naganuma was born in San Francisco. His mother, June Yamamoto, was born in Hawaii and his father, Leo Naganuma, was born in Japan. George saw active military service during the Korean War and was interned on the Gila River Reservation during World War II. He followed in the footsteps of his father, who was the first Japanese American to obtain his plumbing license in the United States. George's first job was as an apprentice pipefitter at Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard. He received his associates degree in mechanical engineering from Cogswell Polytechnical College in 1949 and received his California State Contractor's License in 1961. In the same year he took over the family business Naganuma Plumbing. He has been a consultant for Servadei Service Inc, Higash & Associates, Kalman Mechanical Contractors and Keller & Gannon. He worked at New City Plumbing Inc., where he helped build housing, schools and health care facilities. Through his later companies, Metro Plumbing, Inc. and GM Plumbing, Inc., he worked at UCSF, supporting the hospital's major construction and renovation projects. George served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Master Plumbers Association of San Francisco, an organization that has supported plumbing businesses for over 100 years. He was its last chairman until 2016. George was active in the Japanese-American jazz scene, playing drums and hand drums. George was a lively and active person who enjoyed bowling, golf, hunting and fishing. He was a long-time member of the Presidio Golf Club and served as its president for two years. George was an avid traveler and traveled not only throughout the United States, but also visited Mexico, Tahiti, Hong Kong, Japan, Scotland, England, Italy and France. George married his wife Mary in 1964 and they have lived in San Francisco for 52 years.

He was husband to Mary Naganuma, father to Gary (Debbie), Richard (Maureen) and Kenneth (Suzanne), Kathleen and Claudine (Joel), stepfather to Glenn (Karen), Judith and Ruth (Ken) and grandfather to Chris, Nick , Alex, Micah, Allison and Brooke and step-grandfather of Dae, Garrett, Kelly and Noel and brother of Jean Shigematsu.

From the sumptuous melody and harmonies of “Refuge,” to the sly, sexy Latin groove of “Igualmente,” to the alluring intricacies of “Aftermath” and “Let’s Make a Break for It,” Refuge is every inch the work of an adept and highly attuned ensemble. It’s clear that the players are intimately familiar with not just the compositions, but the possibilities they offer.

While Cotsirilos is the album’s leader and composer, the quartet functions very much on a level playing field. The pieces require close interaction among all four musicians—the entirety of “A Faint Light” hinges on the pocket they create—and even the solos achieve their high caliber through the full band’s chemistry. Cotsirilos’s Byzantine line on “Planet Roxoid” succeeds by virtue of Saunders’s anticipating his every step, and the guitarist pays it forward with an equally empathic accompaniment of Fisher’s bass solo on “The Three Doves.”

Cotsirilos claims to receive inspiration from recordings of Beethoven’s cello sonatas—because, he says, they were written with an aim “for instruments to enhance each other.” His work with his quartet on “Refuge” leaves no doubt that this is so.

In 1969, Cotsirilos enrolled at UC Berkeley. A sociology major, he briefly left school halfway through his studies to play guitar in a blues band. When he re-enrolled at Berkeleyhe separately became a student of Warren Nunes, a legendary guitarist in East Bay musical circles. Nunes brought Cotsirilos under the sway of jazz, learning about the great guitarists as well as the ideas and techniques of other instrumentalists like Miles Davis, John Coltraneand Chick Corea.

Even as he studied music more seriously—training on classical guitar through the San Francisco Conservatory of Music—Cotsirilos completed his sociology degree, then attained a law degree. He maintained a dual career for years working as a criminal defender and lecturer at Berkeley’s prestigious School of Law, while also performing alongside Pharoah Sanders, Etta Jamesrenowned drummer Eddie Marshalland Bay Area stalwarts Mel Martin other Mark Levin. He released his first solo album, “Silenciosa,” in 2003, followed by three trio albums with Fisher and Marabuto.

In 2017, around the same time he expanded his trio to a quartet (with Saunders on piano), Cotsirilos retired from the law profession and devoted himself full-time to music. “Refuge” is one of the beneficiaries of that decision—and so is the jazz audience.

NS. GEORGE – Several fire trucks and ladder trucks lined a quiet residential street south of St. George Golf Club early Wednesday morning after a resident called 911 and reported smoke coming from the roof area.

Several locomotives arrived at the residence on South Bloomington Hills Drive just before 6:30 a.m. and confirmed that the smoke was coming from the roof.

St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker said the fire appeared to have started in the attic above a laundry room right next to the garage and then spread to a series of trusses just above the garage. The family was able to safely evacuate the house and waited outside for the fire department to arrive.

Firefighters broke through the ceiling where they found active flames that had completely burned several eaves. They extinguished the fire shortly after their arrival and began overhauling the area looking for burning embers, including pulling material from the burned area to extinguish any smoldering areas and prevent reignition that could cause a secondary fire.

Stoker went on to tell St. George News that there was recent work being done in the attic that housed the HVAC system, an area that appeared to be the starting point for the fire that continued to smolder for some time before it spreading to other supporting strands.

“It looked like there was some air conditioning going on in the attic,” said Stoker.

Although the fire was reported at 6:30 a.m., fire investigators have reason to believe that the fire did indeed start much earlier based on the significant damage to a number of the trusses that burned through, a process that is likely to be sizable Amount of time would have taken time.

Fortunately, Stoker said, the homeowner noticed scorching discoloration on several walls inside the house and then smelled smoke when the power went out 911.

It was lucky the homeowner noticed the signs and checked outside, he said, as the roof can hold the fire, lowering heat and smoke to the lower floors while keeping the active flames confined to the attic where they last for longer Time can burn time before the inside of the structure is breached.

In addition to the structural damage caused by the burned-out roof trusses, the house also suffered some smoke damage as well as the damage caused by the fire fighters penetrating the burning flames in the attic.

Stoker said residents will stay with their family members until repairs can be made. The houses on both sides of the affected apartment were also evacuated as a precaution; however, the adjacent houses remained undamaged and no injuries were reported.

SANTA CLARA, Calif .– As they enter a critical phase of two games against the NFC West Division’s top opponents, the San Francisco 49ers will welcome some key reinforcements.

When the Niners begin preparing for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, they will meet George Kittle, kicker Robbie Gould and running back Jeff Wilson Jr. back on the training field.

According to San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan, the Niners will open the training window on Wednesday for Kittle (calf), Gould (groin) and Wilson (knee), all of whom were injured. Once this window opens, the team has three weeks to activate the player for the 53-man roster.

While opening the practice window for Kittle, Gould, and Wilson is a step in the right direction, it doesn’t guarantee they’re ready to play against the Cardinals. Kittle and Gould should have a chance to return this week, though Wilson may take a little longer as he has been out with a ruptured meniscus since May.

“It will be his first time playing football in a long time so I don’t know if he will be ready this week, but at least we know he will be back soon, too,” Shanahan said.

The 49ers are also close to reclaiming linebacker Dre Greenlaw from a core muscle injury sustained in a Week 1 win against the Detroit Lions. Shanahan said the team hope Greenlaw’s training window will also open on Wednesday but are “not sure yet”.

Two other Niners who could return this week are Dee Ford and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who both missed Sunday’s win against the Chicago Bears with concussions. They were close enough to play in that game that they traveled to Chicago with the team and Shanahan is optimistic they will be evacuated in time for Wednesday practice.

In less promising injury news, Niner’s running back Elijah Mitchell will be restricted in training on Wednesday as he struggles with a rib injury. And Free Safety Jimmie Ward’s status is even more meager as he recovers from what Shanahan called a Grade 1 quadriceps exercise.

Left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) and receiver Deebo Samuel (calf) managed to beat the Bears OK, but the Niners will continue to watch them this week, Shanahan said.

The San Francisco 49ers lost heartbreakingly to the Green Bay Packers in Sunday Night Football 30:28 after a game-winning 51-yard field goal from kicker Mason Crosby after time ran out.

One of the key games for the 49ers on the track was 3rd and 10th with their own 25.

Kittle, who caught seven passes for 92 yards, was second on the team with nine passes, just behind Deebo Samuel, who was thrown ten times on Sunday and took five of those passes.

After the game, Kittle, who is often viewed as temperamental, encouraged his team to swallow the loss and move on to the next weekend, trying to get better from week to week.

“You know, what I said after the game was take 24 hours, mourn the loss, do whatever you want with it,” Kittle told NBC Sports after the loss. “We’re coming in [next week and] We’ll look at the tape. Look in the mirror, see what you can do better, and then take that into the next week. “

While fixing the mistakes from the last game is important, Kittle looked forward to next week as he plans to cheer the Seahawks at home in the far end of their two-game home stretch.
