SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Frustrated San Francisco Mission District business owners and residents are fed up with repeated vandalism destroying their neighborhood.

Video shows what might look like the line to get into a night club, but it’s actually a mob of people at an organized spray paint party, according to witnesses. More than 100 people showed up to tag the block, including a vacant building, a parklet and several storefronts.

At one point, a fight breaks out. It all happened Friday night on 18th Street near Mission Street.

The day after the landmark was removed from San Francisco’s Cliff House, marking the end of an era at the popular tourist attraction, the historic building was covered in graffiti.

Residents and visitors who took a New Year’s walk on Friday morning were greeted with sprawling black graffiti letters over the normally immaculate white building overlooking the Sutro Baths and Ocean Beach.

And it wasn’t the only place in the area. The empty Louis’ Diner just up the street, which was also closed in July after 83 years, also had graffiti on the walls.

The Cliff House officially closed on Thursday after restaurant owners Dan and Mary Hountalas said they couldn’t reach an agreement with the National Park Service on a long-term lease or continue to operate at a loss during the pandemic. The restaurant ended its in-house dinner in March due to the pandemic and ceased operations entirely in July after a brief, money-losing attempt to only offer a take-away service.

The closure also affects a café in the Lands End visitor center.

Park Service, which controls the property, said it offered the family a three and a half year lease extension but turned the offer down.

“However, this decision does not mean that the Cliff House building will be permanently closed,” the agency said in a statement calling the closure a “temporary cessation of services”. “The NPS is committed to maintaining this iconic building.”

However, the closure and the sudden appearance of graffiti raise questions about the long-term future of the Lands End tourist area.

The Cliff House is the third and last major restaurant in the area to close this year. The Seal Rock Inn restaurant, just up the street, announced its final closure in August shortly after Louis’.

While valet parking has announced it will resume service at Cliff House, the advertising process has currently been suspended due to the pandemic, so it is not clear when the building will be inhabited again.

The agency has announced that it will take measures to prevent vandalism. A spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new graffiti on Friday.

Elected regulator Connie Chan, sworn in to represent the Richmond District on Jan. 8, described the graffiti as “disheartening” and “disappointing,” especially so soon after it was closed. She said she intended to facilitate discussions with the community about what residents in the area would like to see.

Chan said the closure underscores the need for The City, legacy and small businesses to help.

“It’s a challenging situation,” said Chan. “I know it’s not just in Outer Richmond, but really in our entire city. How can we recover from the economic and social impact of the pandemic as a city, not just in this area? “

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – The New Year brought a disturbing discovery at the home of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in San Francisco, where early Friday morning vandals sprayed their home and left a severed pig’s head in front of their garage.

The graffiti says “cancel rental” and “we want everything” – possibly with reference to coronavirus stimulus tests. There was also a severed pig head in a pool of red paint in front of the garage door.

She wasn’t the only lawmaker targeted.

Vandals also sprayed the door of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky with “WERES MY MONEY” on Saturday. “MITCH KILLS THE POOR” scrawled on a window. An obscenity directed against the Republican senator was painted under the mailbox.

McConnell released a statement Saturday condemning the vandalism at his Louisville home.

“I have spent my career fighting for the First Amendment and defending peaceful protest,” he said. “I value every Kentuckian who has participated in the democratic process, whether they agree with me or not. That is different. Vandalism and fear politics have no place in our society. “

Meanwhile, San Francisco police said they received the first call about the Pelosi vandalism around 2:00 a.m. on Friday. Spokeswoman Pelosi was not home as she is currently in Washington DC

Neighbors, while understanding the frustration with the politics on Capitol Hill, say that this type of vandalism does nothing to resolve the issue.

“I don’t think this is a useful trail, and it’s a terrible start to this new year when we’re hoping for less anger and hatred than we faced last year,” he told Audrey Carlson, a neighbor from spokesman Pelosi.

KPIX reached out to Spokesman Pelosi’s office for comment on the incident but has received no response.

The San Francisco Police Department has not released any information about any suspects in the case. In addition, nobody came forward and took responsibility for the vandalism. Some of the graffiti mention UBI (Universal Basic Income) and “Cancel Rent” so it is possible that the culprit is someone implicated in these movements.

Pelosi helped lead a bill last Monday to increase the number $ 600 stimulus checks to $ 2,000275 House members voted in favor of the bill and 134 voted against.

This bill, which was a rare case in which President Donald Trump and Democratic officials agreed on an issue, has since been upheld in the U.S. Senate by Republican majority leader Sen. Mitch McConnell.
