FAIRFIELD (BCN) – Police in Fairfield red-tagged a commercial building and a residence last week for being too dangerous for occupation or habitation after more than 1,500 marijuana plants were discovered being grown illegally inside the two buildings.

Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Bell Avenue at about 7:15 am last Friday regarding a suspicious incident and possible burglary. Once on scene, major damage to a roll-up garage door was detected and the front door to the building was ajar. Inside during a search, police found multiple rooms filled with more than 900 marijuana plants, grow lights, illegal and exposed electrical wiring modified plumbing, ventilation systems and unknown chemicals.

No one was located inside the commercial building.

During the early morning hours of last Saturday, police were dispatched to the 3000 block of Dover Avenue following up on a report of a residential burglary in progress and gunfire being exchanged. When officers arrived, they found the front door pried open, broken glass and the front door riddled with bullet holes. During the investigation, more than 600 marijuana plants were found inside along with firearms, grow lights, illegal and exposed electrical wiring ventilation systems and unknown chemicals.

There have been no arrests.

After adding over 700,000 new cases throughout the last week, the US now has more than 48.9 million confirmed cases of COVID-19. There have been more than 780,000 COVID-19-related deaths — the highest death toll of any country.

New cases continue to rise at a faster rate. In the past week, there were an average of 1,508.3 daily new coronavirus cases per 100,000 Americans — an increase from the week prior, when there were an average of 0.8 daily new coronavirus cases per 100,000 people.

While COVID-19 has spread to nearly every part of the country, cities continue to be the sites of major outbreaks. Experts agree that the virus is more likely to spread in group settings where large numbers of people routinely have close contact with one another, such as colleges, nursing homes, bars, and restaurants. Metropolitan areas with a high degree of connectivity between different neighborhoods and a large population may be particularly at-risk.

The San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley, CA, metro area consists of Alameda County, Contra Costa County, San Francisco County, and two other counties. In the past week, there were an average of 0.3 new coronavirus cases every day per 100,000 San Francisco residents, less than the national figure. The metro area’s average daily case growth in the most recent week is essentially unchanged from the week prior, when there were an average of 0.1 daily new cases per 100,000 San Francisco residents.

The spread of coronavirus depends on a variety of factors and can vary even between neighboring counties. Within the San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley metro area, COVID-19 is growing the slowest in San Francisco County. There were an average of 661.2 new cases per day per 100,000 residents in San Francisco County during the past week, the least of the five counties in San Francisco with available data.

Case growth in the San Francisco metro area is relatively uniform at the county level. In Contra Costa County, for example, there were an average of 936.5 new cases per day per 100,000 residents in the past week — the most of any county in San Francisco yet relatively in line with the case growth rate in San Francisco County.

Just as San Francisco County has the slowest case growth in the San Francisco area, it also has the lowest incidence of cases overall. As of December 9, there were a total of 6,566.9 confirmed cases per 100,000 residents in San Francisco County, the fewest of the five counties in the metro area. For comparison, the US has so far reported 15,085.6 cases per 100,000 Americans nationwide.

New cases continue to rise, albeit at a slowing rate. In the past week, there were an average of 165.5 daily new coronavirus cases per 100,000 Americans — a decrease from the week prior, when there were an average of 235.2 daily new coronavirus cases per 100,000 people.

While COVID-19 has spread to nearly every part of the country, cities continue to be the sites of major outbreaks. Experts agree that the virus is more likely to spread in group settings where large numbers of people routinely have close contact with one another, such as colleges, nursing homes, bars, and restaurants. Metropolitan areas with a high degree of connectivity between different neighborhoods and a large population may be particularly at-risk.

In San Mateo County, for example, there were an average of 227.4 new cases per day per 100,000 residents in the past week — the most of any county in San Francisco yet relatively in line with the case growth rate in Marin County.

Just as Marin County has the slowest case growth in the San Francisco area, it also has the lowest incidence of cases overall. As of February 3, there were a total of 13,074.8 confirmed cases per 100,000 residents in Marin County, the fewest of the five counties in the metro area. For comparison, the US has so far reported 23,032.9 cases per 100,000 Americans nationwide.

“Nashville is on the map, not for the country, not for the Southeast, but for the whole world as a real estate investment market,” said Joel Sanders, Founder and CEO of Apartment Insiders. “It used to be one of those flyover markets where that kind of money only went to New York City or San Francisco, and now those investment dollars are going to Nashville.”

According to recent censuses, the number of companies and corporations with international connections in Nashville has almost doubled in the past 10 years. This in turn creates more jobs and more real estate needs.

The countries with the most immigrants are Great Britain, Australia and Japan.

“Nashville has always had this interesting connection with Japan,” said Sanders. “We have Nissan, we have Nissan, we have Bridgestone, even Mitsubishi just got a bunch of jobs here, and even the current Senator from Tennessee was the ambassador to Japan, so there was this unique bond.”

In December, non-stop flights from Nashville to London via British Airways were resumed at Nashville International Airport. Airport leaders said more international offerings will be added in the coming years.

When Steven Pitsenbarger goes to work as a garden manager amid the greenery and beauty of San Francisco’s Japanese tea garden, he often takes a trip back in time.

He was taken there frequently by his single mother and five siblings during their childhood in San Francisco when the garden was still vacant. It is a place whose history he has been researching tirelessly for many years and lecturing at conferences and workshops across the country. It is also home to a grove of Cryptomeria trees – one of his favorite spots in the United States’ oldest public Japanese garden.

The Mill Valley resident, who studied ornamental horticulture at the City College of San Francisco, started out as a gardener at the Japanese Tea Garden in 2007. Pitsenbarger is also on the board of directors of the North American Japanese Garden Association.

Q How did you get into this field?

A I worked in an office job and felt like I was losing touch with myself and the world, trapped in that fluorescent cubicle. I remember exactly one day watching a grove of trees at work in front of the window and thinking about how I wanted to be outside. I quit with no real plan. I saved some money so I wouldn’t have to work for a while and spent about three months at home working on my own garden. That was my therapy. I should have known then that I should be doing gardening. I ended up starting my own business and painting houses for 10 years. That took me to a point where I again didn’t feel satisfied with my work. I thought about the things I wanted to do, what I would be happiest to do, and gardening was one of those things.

Q What do you love about Japanese gardens?

A When I went to school I had been doing an internship at the Conservatory of Flowers and thought to myself, maybe I want to end up here. But after being in the Japanese Tea Garden for a couple of weeks, I thought I had found my place. There’s something about a Japanese garden that just clicks with my brain. At its core, Japanese gardening is a connection between people and nature, and I have always been drawn to nature.

Q How was it when the garden closed at the beginning of the pandemic?

A On the one hand, being in the garden all by myself was fantastic and I was able to do things that I normally can’t do in the garden when it is full of people. But since the garden was empty there was a sadness. All this beauty happened and people couldn’t experience it. It also gave me a bit of perspective because our world was turned a bit upside down. So much has changed in our lives, but when you look at the garden, it’s like the world is still going, spring is still in progress, the flowers are still in bloom. The world doesn’t stop just because of us.

Q Why was it important to you to get to know the history of the garden?

A Often times, when you get into an older garden, try to determine the intent of the design. It’s difficult in our garden because so many hands have worked on the design over the years. But I didn’t just want to be informed about Japanese gardens in general, but also about our garden, so that when I make a decision – I take this tree out, I move this stone – I want to make informed decisions. I ended up walking down all of those rabbit holes trying to put together a full story about how the garden became where it is today. I am in the process of writing a book about the garden because there are many fascinating stories about the garden, but also that the information out there is based on myths, family stories and many exaggerations and sometimes just inventions that are generally known.

Q Do you spend a lot of time gardening at home?

A I have a garden in Mill Valley but can’t say I spend a lot of time in it. It’s pretty easy. It’s hard to garden all day and then to garden at night when I come back. With managing the garden, playing and writing music, taking care of two dogs, there are plenty of things to keep you busy.

Boston and San Francisco have long been established as the two largest biotech hubs in the country, research and development houses that have spread their tentacles to every level of the industry. However, as space has grown, these two hubs have placed tighter barriers to entry – meaning cities like Seattle could have the chance to build their own innovation hub.

The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Triangle is the fastest growing area for life sciences employment, closely followed by the Atlanta Area and the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Triangle, according to a new report from JLL. The team compared employment rates in the industry between the last five years and the previous five years.

On that assessment, life science positions in the Seattle area increased 3.1% compared to 3% in the Atlanta area and 2.9% in the Central Florida Triangle. In terms of wage positioning – a metric that compares relative wages across biotech hubs – the Seattle area ranked fourth, just behind Los Angeles, the Twin Cities, and the North Carolina Triangle of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill.

In the JLL report, titled “Life Sciences Emerging Markets Index: Ready for a Paradigm Shift,” the team examined not only the “dynamics” of biotech hubs, but also their abundance of talent and “potential” to attract a workforce .

“While Boston, San Francisco and San Diego will always be a permanent fixture in the life sciences pantheon, the incredible dynamism of the industry is opening up new markets that are of growing interest to life science investors and companies alike due to their lifestyle, cost of living and demographic advantage.” wrote JLL.

In terms of total STEM degrees, the megacities were obviously at the top of the list: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, DC. The list is rounded off by the areas of Houston and Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Toronto and Atlanta.

The report also outlined an index of “potential,” which it defined as a matrix of housing availability, an existing millennial workforce, government corporate taxes, and R&D funding for higher education. With this metric, the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord Triangle in North Carolina has narrowly displaced the Seattle area. Immediately below these front-runners were the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colorado area and the Austin, TX area, including two cities along Interstate 35 – Round Rock and Georgetown. A few other surprises on the top 10 list included Boise, ID, and the greater Nashville area.

Part of what defined the potential of these areas was corporate tax rates, and on that front Washington and Texas are ahead. Both states have an enterprise rate of 0% – only North Carolina is close to 2.5%. Meanwhile, California, New York and Texas topped the list of R&D spending on higher education, a landmark in IP manufacturing and business tracking, JLL said.
