Spring Cleansing Guidelines: A Room-by-Room Cleansing Information

When it comes to spring-cleaning, you’ve got to be prepared and organized before you embark on the endeavor that is getting every room in your house spick and span. Read: You’ll need a thorough spring-cleaning checklist to get the job done. (Our free version is available for downloading or printing here.)

But before you even establish a room-by-room game plan, embracing the strategy of looking at your home through the eyes of a real estate agent may serve you well, says Kristi Lord, co-founder of L’AVANT Collective, a home-cleaning products label based in Seattle.

“If you had to put your house on the market, what would you remove, fix or give an extra clean? All of a sudden, the dust on your moldings, the handprints on the windows, the upholstery or carpet smudges and the unorganized closets throughout your home that you have been overlooking all winter will become crystal-clear,” says Lord.

With that in mind, Rome —or your new sparkling digs — wasn’t built in a day. “A common mistake in spring-cleaning is trying to do it all at once,” offers Lord, noting that spring-cleaning can feel so overwhelming for some that it causes people to quit before starting. As Lord gently reminds us all, spring is three months long, so there’s plenty of time to get everything done.

Establishing your approach

Ferhat Bataray, a Tasker on Taskrabbit based in the San Francisco Bay Area, says to remember that depending on the size of your home, spring-cleaning timeframes may vary. Be sure to allot yourself appropriate time to get everything on your spring-cleaning checklist done, and enlist the help of loved ones to pitch in, if you can. (All you have to do is ask! You may be surprised at how many people would be happy to help — especially if you offer to cook them dinner or treat them to a few books that have been on their reading list.)

To accelerate the deep-cleaning process, Bataray also advises grouping similar tasks together, and in a logical order. “For example, clean the fridge and then clean the rest of the kitchen. Most people would make the mistake of cleaning up the kitchen countertops and sink first. But after cleaning out the fridge, the countertops would again be dirty,” he says. “So figure out what would make a mess and do that first before your basic cleaning.”

If you’re pressed for time, “start with your biggest priorities, then work down to smaller priorities,” adds Bataray. This might mean focusing on deep cleaning high-traffic areas such as doors, baseboards, kitchen shelves and floors to maintain a fresh and inviting space throughout spring, he says. Or, it might mean just tackling that coat closet that has been driving you crazy for years or finally organizing your pantry.

Doing something is better than doing nothing, and you may find that checking one thing off the list gives you the motivation you need to power through more spring-cleaning chores. “Start a list that feels manageable and break it up over several days and weeks, even going as far as time blocking a few hours a weekend for certain projects,” suggests Lord, noting the example of tackling two closets a weekend over several weekends or designating one month for indoor areas and one month for outdoor areas if you have a yard.

Last but not least, don’t be ashamed about enlisting the help of professionals. “Not everyone is able to have the time and ability to clean their home, or they simply may not want to do a certain task. A professional cleaner helps get those jobs done quickly and with ease,” says Bataray.

Kitchen cleaning checklist

Granted all the time you spend in your kitchen, it’s bound to get messy. While you should wipe away crumbs and clean up spills as they happen, now is the time to zero in on deep kitchen cleaning gunky drains, grease-slicked range hoods, the insides of major appliances and the outsides of small ones.

Start with a general tidy-up, and then do a deeper dive to thoroughly spring clean the kitchen.

Clean the kitchen sink

Empty drain catch.
Pour hot water down the drain.
Use cleaner and a pipe-cleaning brush to scrub inside the drain.
Use an old toothbrush to scrub the garbage disposal splash guard.
Spray faucet and basin with cleaner, then wipe down.
Replace sponges (or wash in hot, soapy water).
Clean and organize the cabinet under the sink.

Clean the dishwasher

Wash the dishes that are in it.
Empty dishes.
Clear the drain and any debris at the bottom of the dishwasher.
Do a rinse cycle with vinegar and baking soda.

Clean the stove and oven

Remove grates, burner caps and reflector pans, and wash separately.
Spray stovetop and range hood with cleaner, and wipe down.
Spot-clean as necessary with a baking soda paste.
Use an ammonia, dish soap and water solution to clean inside the oven.
Remove the range hood fan filter, soak in hot water and dish soap, and rinse.

Clean the microwave

Place water and vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave on high until boiling.
Wipe microwave interior down with a damp sponge.
Spray and wipe down the exterior.

Clean the refrigerator and freezer

Clear out the fridge and freezer.
Spray shelves, walls and drawers with cleaner, and wipe down.
Spot-clean any sticky spots.
Wipe down the gasket seal on the fridge and freezer doors.
Spray and wipe down the exteriors of the fridge and freezer.
Clean water and ice dispensers.
Wash and refill ice cube trays, return to freezer.
Get rid of any expired products (and anything past its prime).
Return food, drinks and condiments to the fridge and freezer.
Clean the drip pan under the unit.
Use a soft brush and vacuum to clean condenser coils and fan.

Clean walls and floor

Dust and spot-clean walls, baseboards and moldings.
Wipe down backsplash; degrease with cleaner, if necessary.
Vacuum the floor to remove dust, dirt and debris. Mop hardwood, stone or tile floor with the appropriate floor cleaner.
Wash area rugs.

Clean light switches and plates

Use a microfiber cloth to wipe down light switches and plates.
Wipe them down with rubbing alcohol or wash with liquid cleaner. Turn the electricity off first.
Clean the dirt out of crevices with cotton swabs.
Replace bulbs, as needed.

Clean windows and ceiling

Dust and clean window frames and sills.
Spray windows with cleaner and wipe clean or squeegee.
Vacuum dust out of corners.
Clean ceiling with a dry microfiber mop.

Clean counters, shelves, cabinets and drawers

Move appliances, decorative items and anything else covering kitchen surfaces.
Spray and wipe down surfaces, including fronts of cabinets, handles and drawer pulls.
Return appliances and decorative items to their places.
Tidy any clutter on countertops, in drawers or in the pantry.
Reorganize your kitchen junk drawer.

Clean small appliances

Coffee maker

Put a paper filter in the coffee machine.
Brew a vinegar and water solution.
Turn the machine off halfway through brewing for about 30 minutes.
Turn on machine and finish brewing.
Pour out solution, replace filter and brew clean water a few times.
Wipe down the outside of the coffee maker.

Keurig

Clean the cold water reservoir, drip tray and pod holder.
Descale and replace water filter, as necessary.
Wipe down the outside of the Keurig.

Coffee grinder

Grind bread or raw rice.
Empty crumbs and dust with a small brush.
Wipe down the outside of the coffee grinder.

Stand mixer

Wipe with a damp microfiber cloth. To remove old or stubborn marks, add some baking soda to the cloth.
Use a dry toothbrush or toothpick to loosen and remove caked-on food.

Blender

Fill the blender halfway with warm water and a few drops of dish soap.
Put the blender on its base and let it blend for 30 seconds.

Bathroom cleaning checklist

Since the bathroom is one of the most-used rooms in the house (and the place where everyone cleans up), it needs more attention than other rooms. You probably do a cursory clean of it every week or so, but your bathroom spring-cleaning efforts should go further to remove soap scum build-up, graying grout, mold and hard water stains.

Clean bathroom fan

Check the bathroom fan filter and change, if necessary.
Vacuum vents (or clean with a microfiber duster or cloth).
Remove vents and soak in hot, soapy water. Clean any residue with rubbing alcohol. Let covers dry before reinstalling

Clean bathroom sink area

Remove any hair or debris from the drain.
Pour hot water down the drain.
Use cleaner and a pipe-cleaning brush to scrub inside the drain.
Clean and organize inside the medicine cabinet, drawers and the under-the-sink area.
Disinfect handles and drawer pulls.
Spray and wipe down the mirror above the sink.
Spray faucet and basin with cleaner, then wipe down.

Clean toothbrushes

Soak toothbrush bristles in vinegar for 30 minutes, rinse and let air-dry.
Replace any old toothbrushes. Remember: Standard toothbrushes should be replaced at least every three months or after recovering from an illness.
Rinse toothbrush holder in hot water. Use a small bristle brush or pipe cleaner to scrub the inside of the toothbrush slots.Fill the holder with antibacterial mouthwash and let sit for several minutes. Rinse with clean water and let air-dry.

Clean shower

Remove all items from the shower. Get rid of any products you don’t need or use.
Spray the inside of the shower with cleaner. Wash walls, shower caddy, door / curtain, floor and drain cover.
Use a soft-scrub brush and cleaner to scrub soap scum build-up and grout.
Seal grout, if worn out.
Clean and descale shower head.

Clean bathtub

Remove bath products, toys and other items from the tub.
Wash any soap scum or mold off containers and bath toys.
Toss old loofahs, dull razors and empty bottles.
If your tub is porcelain, use a powder cleaner to scrub away soap scum. For acrylic tubs, try vinegar and water (avoid acetone, bleach and abrasive cleaners).
Scrub the faucet and drain.

Clean toilet

Spray the outside of the toilet with cleaner. Wipe down the tank, handle, base, seat and lid.
Sprinkle toilet cleaning solution into the bowl, then clean with a brush and flush.
Disinfect the toilet brush holder.

Clean windows, walls and ceiling

Dust and clean window frames and sills.
Spray windows with cleaner and wipe or squeegee.
Vacuum dust out of corners.
Wipe down the walls, baseboards and moldings with an all-purpose cleaner, bleach or vinegar solution.
Clean ceiling with a dry microfiber mop.

Clean floors

Shake out bathroom rugs, then launder.
Sweep or vacuum the floor.
Apply cleaner, then mop.

Clean washcloths and bath towels

Collect washcloths and towels, then launder.
Add a cup of distilled white vinegar during the final rinse to remove odors.

Clean hair brushes

Use scissors or a comb to pull hair out of the brush.
Soak brushes in a solution of warm water and shampoo.
Lay brushes with bristles down on a towel, then let air-dry.

Clean makeup bag and makeup brushes

If your makeup bag is beyond cleaning, toss and replace it. Otherwise wipe it down or launder it, depending on the material.
Take stock and toss any products you don’t use.
Toss any expired makeup products. As a general rule of thumb, get rid of anything that you’ve had for a year or more.
Clean your makeup brushes.

Out with the old, in with the new: Pack away winter clothes, shoes and boot, then bring out your spring and summer favorites.
Toss, donate or give away things that you don’t love or no longer fit.

Reorganize your shoe rack, so the ones you’ll wear most often will be easy to grab and go.

Clean headboard

Use a lint roller or the upholstery attachment of your vacuum to remove dust and dirt from your headboard.

Remove decorative pillows and throws from bed, set aside or clean as necessary.
Strip the bed. Remove the duvet cover from the duvet.

From the ‘Slutcracker’ to ‘The Nutcracker,’ a information to vacation dance and theater

Just as the last scraps of turkey are turned into sandwiches, and the Christmas lights twinkle by night on Boston Common, the theaters begin to glow with images of holiday cheer wrapped up in music and dance. A listing of performances—traditional or new, sacred or not—are offered below for your enjoyment.

And while you’re out, people-watching is another part of a holiday trip to the theater—especially the sight of the little girls dressed up in their best finery. I hope you see one or more of them wearing their own pink tutus, to match the Sugar Plum fairy on stage. Whatever your pleasure, don’t forget to bring candy canes for intermission, and take time for hot chocolate before returning home.

‘The Nutcracker’

If you are lucky enough to have a child making a stage debut as a mouse or a reindeer, or cherish memories of being the same, no doubt you are humming melodies from Tchaikovsky’s score for “The Nutcracker.” The 19th-century ballet by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa is based on ETA Hoffman’s novella about the young girl, Clara, who leaves her family on Christmas Eve (but returns safely home again) to travel the world on an adventure.

First brought to the USA (in part) by Anna Pavlova in 1915, finally presented in full-length by San Francisco Ballet in 1944, the 1954 production for the New York City Ballet, re-created by George Balanchine, became the granddaddy to hundreds of showings over the decades that have followed. Boston Ballet founder E. Virginia Williams created the local tradition in 1965 for her fledgling company, starring soloists borrowed from NYCB, and an orchestra led by Arthur Fiedler. Our list includes some, but not all, of the many New England productions.

Mikko Nissinen’s ‘The Nutcracker’
Boston Ballet | Opera House (Nov. 25-Dec.31)

Boston Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” features 50-plus company members with apprentices, hundreds of children from the Boston Ballet school, and more than 350 costumes and sumptuous sets designed by Robert Perdziola. The breathtaking production is performed to Tchaikovsky’s full score performed by the Boston Ballet Orchestra, led by Mischa Santora. And yes, the tree does grow, the snow does fall, and the flowers waft beautifully in their second act Waltz.

Anthony Williams’ ‘Urban Nutcracker’
City Ballet of Boston | Boch Center Shubert Theater (Dec. 17-23)

Directed by Anthony Williams, a founding member of the Boston Ballet, and performer in the early productions. Now in its 21st year, Williams has re-imagined his “Urban Nutcracker” in Boston’s landscape. Tchaikovsky’s music, as interpreted by Duke Ellington, will be performed live. The movement ranges from ballet to hip-hop, tap and doo-wop, delivered by a large cast of children, local performers and professional dancers. “Anthony Williams’ Urban Nutcracker” will be broadcast on public television, with a documentary, “Beyond the Stage: The Urban Nutcracker, Community and the Arts” starting Nov. 25. (For those in Greater Boston, GBH 44 will air the program on Dec. 17 at 8 pm)

‘A Christmas Carol’

The many stage versions of “A Christmas Carol” harken back to 19th-century Boston when Charles Dickens read portions of “A Christmas Carol” to a “large, enthusiastic” audience at Boston’s Tremont Temple on Dec. 2, 1867. A few of the contemporary productions are listed below:

San Francisco 2022 Voter Information: Registration, Deadlines, and Sources

It’s been a wild year for elections in San Francisco. In February, over 70% of voters ousted three school board members. Then, in a mid-April special election, SF Supervisor Matt Haney won the 17th Assembly District seat. Most recently, there was the June primary election, where voters recalled District Attorney Chesa Boudin. If all of that voting has given you ballot burnout, take a big drink of water because we’ve got the all-important midterm elections coming up on Tuesday, November 8.

Midterm elections typically garner lower voter turnout, but are a concrete way to influence local and national politics. Here in San Francisco, we’ll be voting on races ranging from State Governor to City District Attorney, with propositions that could impact whether our state’s constitution grants the right to reproductive freedom, plus much more. Here’s everything you need to know about voting in the 2022 midterm elections in San Francisco:

What are the key races and propositions on the ballot?

In addition to statewide elections for California Governor and US senate races, there are several local races and propositions to pay attention to.

SF Board of Supervisors have 5 of the 11 seats up for election, which is conducted via ranked-choice voting. Newly redistricted District 6 which split up the Tenderloin and SoMA stands to be one of the most interesting races, with incumbent Matt Dorsey, former communications director for the SFPD who was appointed by Mayor London Breed to replace Matt Haney in May, facing off against activist Honey Mahogany, who would be the first trans supervisor in SF if elected. The District Attorney race includes Brooke Jenkins, the current district attorney who was appointed in June by Mayor London Breed after Chesa Boudin’s recall, against two opponents, both of whom once worked on the police commission. John Hamasaki, who has the support of progressive SF District Supervisor Dean Preston, and whose campaign is run by Boudin’s former campaign manager. Jenkins’ other opponent is Joe Alioto Veronese, a civil rights attorney, former police and fire commissioner, and the son of former mayor Joseph Alioto.

San Francisco’s public defender office hasn’t had a contested race in 20 years, but that’s about to change as Assistant District Attorney and former Deputy Public Defender Rebekah Young is facing off against incumbent and London Breed appointee Mano Raju.

This ballot includes all of Mayor London’s school board appointees, Lisa Weissman-Ward, Ann Hsu, and Lainie Motamedi, who were selected after the recall election in February ousted three people on the board. They face competition from Alida Fisher, Gabriela Lopez (one of the members who was ousted in February), and Karen Fleshman.

Statewide propositions to pay attention to include Prop 1, which will amend the state’s constitution to include reproductive freedom as a constitutional right, and Prop 26 and Prop 27, which, respectively, will allow for sports betting on tribal lands, and for online and mobile sports wagering outside tribal lands. Another proposition that could make a big impact on the state is Prop 30, which would add a personal income tax for those making over $2 million and use that to fund programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Opponents say it’s a big tax increase that disproportionately benefits large corporations, with the ride-share service Lyft spending $15 million to fund the over 90% of the YES on 30 campaign.

There are a handful of local measures on the midterm ballot, including Proposition D, which seeks to streamline the approval process for affordable housing, including increasing housing access so that households who make up to 140% of the area median income can apply, so long as the average household income is no more than 120% of AMI. Proposition E is another affordable housing measure that competes with Prop D with further restrictions, including providing housing for households with income up to 120% of AMI, with an average household income of no more than 80% of AMI. Proposition M would place a tax on owners of vacant residential units in buildings with three or more units that have been vacant for more than six months. The tax would range from $2,500 to $5,000 per vacant unit in 2024, and would increase to a maximum of $20,000 (with adjustments for inflation) if the same owner kept that unit vacant in consecutive years.

Those who want to move towards a future that’s less dominated by auto traffic should study Proposition I, which, with a YES vote, would repeal the Board of Supervisors’ ordinance that keeps JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park and the Great Highway car-free and open them back up to private vehicle use. In contrast, a YES vote on Proposition J would reaffirm the Board’s ordinance to keep JFK Drive as an open recreation space and closed to private vehicles permanently. Related, a YES vote on Proposition N would allow the City to take over the underground parking garage below the Music Concourse and use public funds to acquire, operate, or subsidize public parking.

Finally, Proposition C would provide an oversight commission, inclusive of seven members appointed by the Mayor and Board of Supervisors, for the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing.

How can I register to vote in San Francisco?

Registering to vote is easy. There are a few rules: You must be a US citizen, a resident of California, and be at least 18 years old on Election Day. In order to register, you cannot currently be serving a state or federal prison term for a felony conviction, or found to be mentally incompetent to vote by a court.

You can register to vote online. If you do not have a signature on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), you will need to print, sign, and mail the application.

You can also register using a paper Voter Registration Application. To receive a paper registration application by mail, contact the Department of Elections or call 415-554-4375. Voter Registration Applications are also available at your local post office, San Francisco Public Library branch, or DMV office.

When is the deadline to register to vote?

In California, the deadline to register to vote for any election is 15 days before Election Day. That means the last day to register for the 2022 Midterm Elections is Monday, October 24. After the deadline, you can file for Same Day Voter Registration, and vote on a conditional basis.

Can I vote early?

Absolutely! Official ballot drop boxes will be available 24/7 at 34 convenient locations across San Francisco, beginning Monday, October 10, through Election Day, November 8, at 8 pm.

Beginning Tuesday, October 11, you can also vote in person (or drop off your ballot) at City Hall. The voting center will be open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm; on the two weekends before Election Day, October 29-30 and November 5-6, from 10 am to 4 pm; and on Election Day (Tuesday, November 8), from 7 am to 8 pm.

Can I vote by mail?

Yes! In California, registered voters automatically receive a mailed ballot before every election. You can return your ballot by mail (no postage required), drop it in any official ballot drop box, or at any polling location. Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked by November 8.

How do I find my polling place?

There will be 501 polling places open from 7 am to 8 pm on Election Day for in-person voting and ballot drop-off. Find your polling place on the Secretary of State’s website. Use the Voting Site Wait Times Lookup Tool to look up your assigned polling place, get directions to your polling place or the Voting Center, and check reported wait times.

How do I vote absentee in San Francisco?

You may still vote in the upcoming election if you are a civilian living overseas or in another state temporarily, in the military, or other uniformed service member. Get the FAQs and more info online.

How do I know if/when my vote was counted?

Track your ballot using the Voter Portal or sign up to receive automatic notifications on the status of your ballot via email, SMS (text), or voice call.

How can I volunteer as a poll worker?

Election Day poll workers in San Francisco are paid a stipend between $225 and $295 for their service, which can include setting up polling places by 6 am sharp, checking in voters using precinct rosters and issuing ballots, closing the polls, and transferring custody of voting material. The Department of Election recruits nearly 2,000 poll workers every Election Day.
