Carnaval San Francisco is a colorful two-day festival held annually over Memorial Day weekend in San Francisco's Mission District. It celebrates Latin American, Caribbean and Afro-diasporic cultures through music, dance, art and cuisine.

Founded in 1979 by a group of artists and activists, it is now the largest multicultural festival on the West Coast. The free festival spans 17 blocks in the Mission District, primarily along Harrison Street between 16th and 24th Streets. It features five main stages with over 50 local artists, 400 vendors, international cuisine, crafts and various activities for all ages.

The highlight is the lively grand parade on Sunday with elaborate costumes, music and dance groups representing different cultures and traditions.

Recently-retired quarterback Tom Brady is a native of Northern California. He grew up a fan of the San Francisco 49ers.

In fact, one of the most iconic images of San Francisco’s 1981 NFC Championship Game victory over the Dallas Cowboys at old Candlestick Park was a then four-year-old Brady enjoying the dramatic win with his mother.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion has long considered finishing up his career with his childhood team. After Brady’s 20-year run with the New England Patriots, he wanted to sign with San Francisco ahead of the 2020 season before the team ultimately decided to stick with Jimmy Garoppolo.

As you already know, Brady opted to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — leading that team to a Super Bowl title in his first season before falling in the NFC Divisional Playoffs this past season.

So, why are we hearing increased chatter about Tom Brady being traded to the San Francisco 49ers? It’s come up a lot in recent days following the quarterback officially announcing his retirement.

Most recently, former New England Patriots quarterback Scott Zolak touched on this possibility. The Pats’ color analyst and radio show host said that he can only envision one scenario where Brady comes out of retirement. That would include him agreeing to be traded to the 49ers for the aforementioned Garoppolo.

In theory, Brady heading to San Francisco would work. He’d likely play one more season before Trey Lance takes over under center. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers continue to be linked to Garoppolo with the veteran likely to be dealt here within the next few weeks.

All the while, Brady doesn’t seem 100% committed to hanging up his cleats after announcing his retirement.

“You know, I’m just gonna take things as they come. I think that’s the best way to put it and I don’t think anything. You know, you never say never. At the same time, I know that I feel very good about my decision. I don’t know how I’ll feel six months from now. (Something could) change, it most likely won’t.

But I try to make the best possible decision I can in the moment, which I did this last week. Again, I think it’s not looking to reverse course, I’m definitely not looking to do that. But at the same time I think you have to be realistic that you never know what challenges there are gonna be in life. Again, I loved playing. I’m looking forward to doing things other than playing.”

It all seems great. It makes for fun speculation during a somewhat down time on the NFL calendar. But it’s not happening. Here’s why.

San Francisco 49ers are all in on Trey Lance

There’s a reason San Francisco’s brass and Garoppolo himself basically admitted a trade is in the cards following their ugly NFC Championship Game loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers exhausted three first-round picks and a mid-rounder to select Lance No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

We have absolutely no idea whether the raw and uber-talented Lance is ready to start under center. He performed pretty well in limited action as a rookie and boasts tremendous upside. But until the North Dakota State product sees regular season, he’s a true wild card.

It makes absolutely no sense for general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan to apparently admit selecting Lance was a mistake by trading for Brady.

A Tom Brady trade to the San Francisco 49ers could work in theory

Financially, the 49ers could afford to acquire Brady in a trade with the Buccaneers for Garoppolo. The 44-year-old signal caller would cost a mere $20.27 million against the cap in 2022 if he decided to unretire. Of that, the 49ers would be on the hook for just north of $12 million.

On the other hand, Garoppolo’s cap hit for the Buccaneers in a hypothetical trade would come in at $25.5 million. That’s not terrible given his winning ways and Tampa’s need for a quarterback to replace Brady.

There’s also a thing called compensation when it comes to blockbuster deals of this ilk. Right now, Garoppolo’s market is likely a second-round pick and a couple mid-round selections.

Is Tom Brady the greatest of all time or a cheater?

Remember, Carson Wentz netted the Philadelphia Eagles a conditional first-round pick and a third-round selection from the Indianapolis Colts last offseason. Garoppolo has been more successful throughout his career than his counterpart.

Given San Francisco lacks a ton of draft capital, it stands to reason that this could be a player-for-player swap. That’d be similar to when the New England Patriots did Rob Gronkowski a solid by trading him to the Buccaneers ahead of the 2020 season to team up with Tom Brady. New England acquired Gronk for a fourth and seventh-round selection.

This all seems fun. And again it could work. We’re just not seeing it for another reason.

Why would Tom Brady leave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the San Francisco 49ers?

Outside of his link to the 49ers’ organization throughout his life, it makes no real on-field sense for Brady to force his way from Tampa should he unretire.

The Buccaneers are legit Super Bowl contenders with him in the mix. The same thing could be said for the 49ers should they add Brady in a hypothetical trade.

For Brady, this would likely be seen as a lateral move. That’s one of the major backstories we must look at when determining that Tom Brady to the 49ers is nothing more than a pipe dream brought on by the media during a slow time in the NFL news cycle.

It’s not happening. Move on!

A Jimmy Garoppolo trade from the San Francisco 49ers can’t be made official until the new NFL league year opens up in roughly two weeks. In no way does this mean a trade won’t be agreed to here within the next few days.

49ers general manager John Lynch spoke to the media on Wednesday from the site of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

In doing so, the front office head told reporters that San Francisco has had discussions with other teams regarding a Garoppolo trade and plans to continue these talks as a free agency opens here soon.

The expectation has always been that San Francisco’s brass and Garoppolo will work together to find the 30-year-old signal caller a new home. Garoppolo touched on that immediately after the 49ers blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead in the NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams back in January.

“I was talking to John (Lynch) yesterday about finding the right destination. I just want to go to a place where they want to win,” Garoppolo told reporters back on February 1.

Jimmy Garoppolo Shoulder Surgery And Impact On Potential Trade

There’s another pretty big backdrop to all of this. It was noted earlier in the week that Garoppolo is set to undergo surgery on his throwing shoulder and could miss up to 16 weeks. While this timeline would still make him available for some of training camp and the preseason, it complicates things further.

Lynch touched on that bit of breaking news, indicating that “it is described as a minor surgery” and “the prognosis is really good.”

Amid reports of Garoppolo needing surgery, ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted that there’s still multiple teams interested in the quarterback’s services. How said surgery might impact his trade value remains to be seen.

Common logic seems to suggest that the 49ers can get a haul similar to what the New York Jets received from the Carolina Panthers for Sam Darnold last offseason. New York acquired a sixth-round pick in 2021 as well as second and fourth-round selections in 2022.

When looking at the statistical differences between these two quarterbacks (past two seasons), it’s easy to conclude Garoppolo has performed better.

Sam Darnold: 60% completion, 4,735 yards, 18 touchdowns, 24 interceptions, 72.3 rating (6-17 record)

Jimmy Garoppolo: 68% completion, 4,906 yards, 27 TD, 17 INT, 97.2 rating (12-9 record)

Looking at it through the lens of quarterback-needy teams, there’s as many as 10 who could be in the market for a new quarterback. Among them, Garoppolo has been linked primarily to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders.

Pittsburgh saw longtime starter and two-time Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger retire following the 2021 season. Meanwhile, Washington started three quarterbacks under center last season.

As for the Colts, they are preparing to move off Carson Wentz after just one season. That will likely come via trade or release ahead of the new league year. It’s an open question whether general manager Chris Ballard would view Garoppolo as an upgrade over Wentz.

Other teams that could show some interest in Garoppolo this month include the Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers.

When San Francisco traded up to the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Lance, there was some who believed that Garoppolo would be moved immediately.

That was never the plan behind the scenes. A small-school product from North Dakota State, Lance wasn’t ready to take over under center. While he displayed flashes in limited time as a rookie, growing pains were the name of the game.

Now, entering his first full offseason as a member of the 49ers, it’s time for Lance to prove that he can be handed the keys to the kingdom. Hence, why Garoppolo will likely be traded here soon.

In talking about his young quarterback on Wednesday, Lynch sounded an optimistic tone.

“He’s everything we thought he was when we traded a lot to go get him and more. I really believe that. There’s a tone of excitement. Of course, there’s some unknown. There always is in this game,” San Francisco 49ers GM John Lynch on Trey Lance, via NFL Network. “Trey’s made of the right stuff. Both talent wise and in his spirit of who he is, the intangibles. Guys like playing for him. Guys like being around him. We’re certainly excited to see what he can do.”

We wouldn’t expect anything different from Lynch given that San Francisco used three first-round picks and a mid-round selection for Lance. That’s especially true with Garoppolo firmly on the trade block. In reality, it’s a PR game to help hype up the youngster while attempting to create more leverage in Garoppolo trade talks.

For now, we wait and see what is going to happen with Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers. Talks will undoubtedly continue with general managers meeting up in Indianapolis during the combine this week. Perhaps something gets done in short order.

In the sign of the times, the Sundance Film Festival announced today that it will go live in 2022.

The original plan was to hold the prestigious indie festival founded by Robert Redford in 1981 in a hybrid form, with a combination of online events and “personal Utah elements”. Unfortunately, all that has changed with the Omicron variant. This is what the organizers say in the announcement:

“We were looking forward to our first full hybrid Sundance Film Festival and our teams spent a year planning a festival like no other. But despite the most ambitious protocols, the Omicron variant, with its unexpectedly high transmission rates across the country, is reaching the limits of health security, travel and other infrastructures. And so we announce today: The personal Utah elements of the festival will go online this year. “

…

“While it is a huge loss not to have a personal experience in Utah, we don’t believe it is safe or doable while overwhelming thousands of artists, audiences, staff, volunteers and partners from around the world for Eleven Day Festival Communities are already struggling to provide basic services. “

The Sundance Film Festival – a program organized by the nonprofit Sundance Institute – is scheduled to begin Thursday, January 2022, and last eleven days.

Like so many arts organizations here in the San Francisco Bay Area and around the country (and in the world), Covid has been an ubiquitous and daunting challenge to live programming.

We hope that these nonprofits can continue to navigate these troubled waters and soon enough achieve the semblance of normalcy we are all looking for.
