Why All of the Billionaires Are Shifting to Hawaii

Thu, 31 Mar 2022 16:55:57 +0000

In 1969 a young idealist, on her first trip to Hawaii, checked into the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a sublime pink confection of a place in Waikiki Beach, on the island of Oahu. She threw open the balcony curtains, only to have spoiled the view of the surrounding mountains when she looked down onto the parking lot of the neighboring Sheraton Waikiki, then under construction. In April of the following year, the woman in question released “Big Yellow Taxi,” a protest song inspired by her stay at the legendary resort. A couple of the lyrics—“You don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone” and “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot”—became bywords of the ’60s counterculture.

If Joni Mitchell were to check in today, and her antennae were still finely tuned (according to local lore, the line “They took all the trees and put ’em in a tree museum/And charged all the people a dollar and a half just to see ’em” refers to Foster Botanical Garden in downtown Honolulu), the vista might inspire an entire catalog of new music. Pilloried by its detractors for being as ersatz as an Elvis movie, Waikiki has more than lived up to its planners’ promise to become a Bain de Soleil–covered bastion of resort living. And the gentrification doesn’t stop there.

In a turn of events that in another era might have galvanized a generation of tambourine-wielding folklorists, the rest of this remote Pacific archipelago has become Eden for the one percent.

EBay founder Pierre Omidyar, who spent part of his childhood in Hawaii, is now back as a full-time Honolulu resident. Salesforce boss Marc Benioff holds court on the Big Island, along with Starbucks capo Howard Schultz. Oprah is over in Maui, as is Jeff Bezos. If they squint they can make out Peter Thiel’s lair in Makena, on the south shore. In December, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan bought an additional chunk of land on Kauai, bringing their total to more than 1,500 acres. And the film producer Allison Sarofim is in Kahala on Oahu, where her family owns the old Clare Boothe Luce estate.

“Going there has taught me the concept of pono, which means living in harmony with each other and the environment,” Sarofim says. “It’s a fundamental value that is deeply ingrained in Hawaiian culture, and it’s my hope that people see and understand that part of Hawaii, as opposed to simply a beautiful vacation destination.”

Promoted for 120 years as a tourist escape for its sun, surf, and great year-round weather, Hawaii is a victim of its own success; Sales of properties costing $10 million or more have increased sixfold in the last year.

“We always thought people wanted authentic experiences, and we encouraged them to come and live like a local,” says Chris Kam, president and COO of Omnitrak, a Honolulu-based research company. “Somewhere along the line that messaging got interpreted as ‘Move to Hawaii and become a local.’ ”

One of Omnitrak’s recent findings, Kam says, has been a trend during the pandemic of outsiders immersing themselves in a place they’re considering moving to, a fad well suited to the kaleidoscope of sights on offer here. This development has been encountered firsthand by Titus Kinimaka, a long-haired 64-year-old big wave surfer who is also an actor and the owner of the Hawaiian Surf School in Kauai, where the students include tech bros and corporate bigwigs.

“There are a lot of really interesting things going on below the surface, if you’re willing to make the effort,” he says. “I’m not surprised that a lot of these people who come decide to stay.”

The first gentrifiers of the islands were mostly robber barons, but today’s status-conscious transplants are more likely to come from Palo Alto or Wall Street. The Big Five (the sugarcane conglomerates that wielded considerable power in the early 20th century) may have gone the way of traditional instruments like the pahu, but a scan of the map and headlines reveals that serious money from the mainland is as prevalent as ever.

Though there are no formal programs or tax incentives to attract residents from out of state, the draw of Hawaii, beyond the Gilligan’s Island escapist fantasy, its isolation and the perception that it’s a safe place to visit and, by extension, remains to live. Then there is the allure of the not insignificant anonymity of a largely TMZ-free zone.

The charge of the billionaire brigade, at least as portrayed in the media, is being led by the notoriously press-shy Zuckerberg, who purchased several hundred acres on Kauai in 2014 for $53 million and shelled out $120 million on subsequent expansions. Last year he became the poster boy for “There goes the neighborhood!” anxieties when he infamously shared a video of himself, slathered in zinc cream, surfing on a hydrofoil—an image that is not likely to be featured on official tourism channels.

Larry Ellison and Bill Gates

Sean M HaffeyGetty Images

Before him, Oracle co-founder and megadeveloper Larry Ellison had, by 2012, bought most of the land on the island of Lanai for $300 million, and he has since spent some $500 million developing it, including the famed Sensei Lanai resort. And Bezos recently splurged on a secluded 4,500 square-foot $78 million megamansion with girlfriend Lauren Sánchez on La Perouse Bay, near the southern tip of Maui, about two miles from the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea, where the HBO series The White Lotus was filmed .

But it is the 35-mile Kona-Kohala coast, on the northwest part of Hawaii Island, as the Big Island is also called, that continues to attract the likes of Walmart heir S. Robson Walton, Emerson Collective billionaire Laurene Powell Jobs, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, and Benioff, who wears Hawaiian shirts to work and named his dog Koa, or warrior.

They join Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, who bought the Four Seasons hotel and the surrounding Hualalai Resort in 2006, going on to build an oceanfront home valued around $75 million at Hualalai’s tony Kukio Golf and Beach Club. For his part, Bill Gates reportedly stays up the coast at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, even though, since 2007, he has co-owned the Four Seasons hotel management company with Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal. (Last year Gates became the majority shareholder.) It is increasingly hard to see the forest for the megayachts.

There are waiting lists for private jets, and good luck getting into the right golf club without the right connections, although Bezos and Co. can always emulate Charles Schwab, the founder of the brokerage company, and billionaire investor George Roberts, who founded their own golf course on the Big Island in 2003. The club is said to be open to just 100 members, invitation only.

Not surprisingly, a lot of these tech arrivists are buying their way in with the help of organizations, such as the Hawaii Community Foundation, that connect donors with charities. Benioff recently made the news as a good neighbor by coordinating the donation of 1 million face masks to Hawaii County Civil Defense through the University of California San Francisco, where he funded the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine. In 2016 Zuckerberg incensed locals by building a six-foot-tall wall along the perimeter of his enormous estate, so he then poured more than $22 million into various nonprofit organizations on Kauai, including $4 million to save the Alakoko Fishpond. In January he gave $50 million to the University of Hawaii, its largest cash gift ever.

According to John De Fries, president and CEO of the Hawaiian Tourism Authority, it all sounds like a lot of movement, but the change has been more gradual than most people know. “Obviously, it’s highlighted right now by the top entrepreneurs and global game changers,” De Fries says, “but before those headliners came here, the wealthy kind of came here quietly.”

Doris Duke and James Cromwell

De Fries is referring to the decades-old migration of high society, led principally by transplants from San Francisco, which has been beating a path to Hawaii ever since Laurance Rockefeller, the son of John D. Rockefeller, built the landmark Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Kohala Coast in 1965. Rockefeller tapped his friend Lurline Matson Roth, who was possessed of not only immaculate taste but also a substantial shipping fortune, to design a template for the beau monde to luxuriate in style, like Luce and Doris Duke, whose estate, Shangri La, became part of the modern mythology of Hawaii. (Her feud with Barbara Hutton escalated there, when the Woolworth heiress decided to help out her friend by redecorating Duke’s Xanadu.)

“If you cut a tree, you can read the rings, and Hawaii has a lot of rings,” says designer Michael S. Smith, referring to the melange of architectural influences at play in the islands, everything from Balinese to Midcentury Modern and Mediterranean . “But the essence of Hawaii style really comes from the fabulous homes of these grandes dames.”

Luce commissioned the Russian-born Hawaii modernist master Vladimir Ossipoff to build her a post-retirement sanctuary that exalted the lush tropical splendor. Halenai’a, or House of the Dolphins, was finished in 1967, and 32 years later the beachfront manse was acquired by Allison Sarofim’s father Fayez. Today Sarofim too preaches the gospel of environmental conservation: “Like many, I go to Hawaii to recharge, and a crucial part of that experience for me is to connect with nature.”

The land remains Hawaii’s most precious inheritance, one that requires caretaking by everyone, visitors and locals alike, from generation to generation. De Fries, who was born in Waikiki, learned that early on from his grandmother. When asked to explain the concept of a glass half full versus half empty, her reply was that it is always 100 percent full—with the water we drink and the air with breathe. And all of it filled with light.

“She taught me that until you learn to value what’s intangible the same way you value what is tangible,” De Fries says, “you will just keep repeating the same lessons in life. Each is a life-giving force: Our ancestors referred to them as ha, that breath of life; wai, the water we drink; and i was in reference to the light or spirit in the glass. In this story is the essence of who we are as a place and as a people. And it speaks to our fullest potential, because we come from the land of life-giving water with lessons to learn and lessons to teach.”

Hawaii Is ‘Evolving The Franchise’ – CBS San Francisco

Tue, 28 Sep 2021 12:49:24 +0000

(CBS) – NCIS welcomed a new addition last week when NCIS: Hawii made its series debut on CBS. The newest version of the NCIS universe, Hawaii, stars Vanessa Lachey as Jane Tennant, the first female agent in charge of NCIS Pearl.

CBS’s Matt Weiss caught up with Lachey to discuss her way to the show, what Hawaii hopes to achieve and the new BOOM-ing episode tonight.

CONTINUE READING: Deadly rip tide warning for Northern California beaches

MW- Hello Vanessa! Congratulations on the premiere last week. Now that we get started, how does it feel to not just be a part of this show but to be the head of the entire team?

VL- It’s an honor and I don’t take it lightly. I’m excited this is a developing franchise and it’s amazing to be a part of. They said they had trouble finding Jane Tennant during the audition and I was actually on another CBS show, a comedy, believe it or not. So talk about reversing the roles that we were told on March 31st that the comedy is not progressing and I ended up getting very sad and confused.

Then I heard about NCIS: Hawaii and booked the job through mid-April. I was surprised and my career has completely turned left, but I’m so glad it went that way. Here we are now and I live in Hawaii.

MW- Not the worst place to turn your life upside down.

VL- Yes, exactly. Maybe it’s just finally turned on the right side!

MW- [Laughs] Here we go! So we’re an episode with very positive reviews that I am sure will be great to hear. It definitely feels like NCIS to me, but it’s fresh at the same time.

VL- Thanks very much! Yes, it evolves the franchise to show more of a personal life and the vulnerabilities of the family and characters. We’re trying to be loyal to NCIS, but we’d also like to add a few layers that set it apart.

MW- As Jane Tennant, you will be the first female agent in charge of NCIS Pearl. What does it mean to you playing a character like Jane and what are some of your favorite traits about her?

CONTINUE READING: Simone Biles talks about Olympic bouts before taking the stage in San Francisco

VL- Oh god, it’s my honor to play them. There are women out there in NCIS so I love that you know making it the norm.

For qualities that I love, I love that they don’t take no for an answer. She will continue to strive for what she wants in a male-dominated profession while doing it with grace. She’s a great mom too. She always has her children on her mind, even when she is at work.

She runs 44 special agents, but she always thinks about her children and always puts them first. She has a love for the country and she honors her country.

At the same time, at the end of the day, she is a vulnerable woman who just wants to love. There’s a lot about her that I love and that’s why I fell in love with this character. When I got the job, I broke down completely because I said to myself, I can do this, I am her, I believe in her, I know what she stands for. I felt like that was me.

MW- Episode two is coming out tonight and I love the title. Episode two is simply called “Boom”.

VL- There’s a lot of explosives out there, a lot. It will keep you busy and hold the edge of your seat. We also introduced a new character, his name is Boom Boom. He’s my explosive type and I think you will really like him too.

We really threw it out of the park with these episodes, we’re going strong out the gate. I hope everyone feels the same way!

MW- Well, we’re all excited to see what happens tonight and the rest of the series progresses. Congratulations again on the role and thank you Vanessa for the time!

VL- Thanks Matt!

Overwatch execs react to OWL shifting playoffs on-line in Hawaii

Thu, 26 Aug 2021 11:11:48 +0000

Source: Ben Pursell for Blizzard Entertainment

The Overwatch League had to cancel its live playoffs in Dallas and its live final in LA this week in response to worsening COVID conditions and related visa challenges for APAC teams. The move has sparked some violent reactions, with some professionals expressing disappointment while others expressing anger over the change and how the postseason will continue to be dealt with.

Here are some of the most notable reactions we saw when the Overwatch League switched the postseason to an online format with NA teams playing out of Hawaii.

OWL players are responding to playoffs being moved to Hawaii and played online

The most common reaction to the announcement has been disappointment and sadness from many players, including Gladiators player Shu, Houston Outlaws player Crimzo, and former pro McGravy, who all looked forward to the NA-based LAN events.

Some players, overcoming disappointment, criticized OWL’s plan to host NA teams in Hawaii during the postseason. San Francisco Shock player Nero stated that NA will be at a “massive disadvantage” in response to the decision, although he admitted that nothing could be done about it.

Houston Outlaws player Danteh expressed his frustration with “jet lag + lost practice time + worn setups aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh”.

Perhaps most controversial is that Atlanta Reign’s Gator posted numerous tweets about the situation. First, on his own side, he said, “What a joke, they can’t get one thing right”. He also responded to the Overwatch League announcement by saying, “Make a right decision.”

Both comments sparked some backlash from OWL fans and journalists. In response to the backlash, Gator went on to state that he is not upset about the cancellation of live events due to COVID, but he is upset that the Overwatch League playoffs will be played online rather than on the LAN and that 5 NA teams will do so be forced to travel to Hawaii again.

In a tweet, Gator suggested that it would be preferable for both regions to play separate playoffs and then, after being quarantined, host a single final somewhere on the LAN, as they did in 2020. He also pointed out that due to Pelican’s lung collapse, he will not be able to compete now that the final is in Hawaii because Pelican, an MVP contestant and star DPS player for Reign, cannot travel due to his illness.

Gator’s teammate Masaa responded with a much less tactful response, just a video of someone laughing hysterically to show his disapproval of the Overwatch League’s post-season plans.

Even if the cancellation of the live events was necessary, it is clear that the players are not happy with the situation and the reputation of the OWL 2021 postseason may be damaged a bit.

Admor HVAC Inc. retains Hawaii clients cool, smiling

Mon, 16 Aug 2021 22:08:24 +0000

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Not everyone knows Admor HVAC Inc.

But you certainly know the daughter of the owner and her catchphrase “I love my Fujitsu”.

Get the latest news on the go NOT 2GO, KHON’s morning podcast, every morning at 8

“It’s interesting because I have a job in retail, but I wear a mask all the time and people only recognize me by my eyes,” said Keli Santos. “People say, ‘Do I know you from anywhere?'”

This “somewhere” has naturally appeared in commercials for and with her father Drew Santos since she was three. There was no turning back.

Business Matters: Building a Better MLS System

“And that one picture got the whole ‘I love Fujitsu’ phenomenon in a nutshell,” said Drew Santos, President of Admor HVAC. “Nobody was doing TV commercials at the time, and I wanted to do things outside of the box and really shake up the industry. So we started producing our commercials. “

The popular TV commercials took Drew on an unusual journey that began after visiting a customer when he was a young man selling air conditioners in a small warehouse in Halawa. It turns out that this customer changed his life.

“He said, ‘What is your dream?’ And I told him I wanted the largest HVAC wholesale company in Hawaii. I want to be a superstore, ”said Drew. “So he took me to Sand Island in his car and opened a 30,000-foot warehouse and said, ‘Is this big enough for your dream?'”

Business Matters: Flowers with flair at ‘Hele Mele Botanicals’

It was then that Drew began writing his own story. He decided to start an advertising campaign with himself, the Fujitsu brand and his daughter Keli. Keli admitted that some of the ideas seemed pretty cheesy.

“What if you see dad posing with all the models? That’s a big eye roll, that’s a big eye roll, ”Keli said and laughed. “All my friends say, ‘Is that your father? ‘And then I say,’ Yeah, but it’s okay, I love him, he’s my father. ‘ I have to love him, no matter what. “

Although business is booming now, according to Santos, there are many challenges along the way. The greatest thing is to gain the trust of your customers as a recognized outsider.

“I think it comes down to working hard and always doing more than your competitors are doing. Work when they’re loose, I never get complacent, ”Drew said.

It’s a work ethic that his entire team shares, he says.

“I couldn’t build this business without an incredible team of people. Some of them with us 25, even every 28 years. They gave their heart and soul. I really appreciate that, and I really appreciate that, ”Drew said.

Back to his number 1 spokesman, she really loves her Fujitsu, and for good reason. Fujitsu sends Keli to college.

“It really is. For everything I got, I thank Fujitsu for everything,” said Keli with a laugh. “I love my Fujitsu.”

California is transferring in direction of vaccine passports. In Hawaii, it was a large number.

Mon, 02 Aug 2021 11:16:26 +0000

“I think the wind seems to be blowing here,” said Dr. George Rutherford, epidemiologist at UCSF. “I don’t see the state or federal government stepping in. It will largely be a private sector solution that is government sponsored but not mandated. It will be like ‘no shoes, no shirt, no service’.”

Even if the state does not require companies to ask their customers to present digital vaccination cards, the simple provision of the digital infrastructure and the gentle stimulation of companies in this direction – which is already the case with the vaccination of employees – could be a de facto Create a system of vaccination records. The state’s digital IDs are not as easy to forge as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s physical vaccination cards and could become the preferred method of verifying vaccine status in the state.

Vaccination records are controversial. Some Republican-led states have banned communities from adopting a vaccination record, and even in heavily Democratic California, where 61% of the population is fully vaccinated, Newsom avoids using the phrase.

The only state where a version of “vaccine passports” has been introduced on a relatively large scale is Hawaii, a major tourist center with millions of visitors Annual visitors from the mainland. It didn’t go well.

In early July, Hawaii launched its Safe Travels Program, which allows travelers to skip a quarantine period or receive a negative test in order to provide proof of vaccination. According to local TV reports, the first day of the broadcast at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport was a mess.

As part of the program, travelers were required to post pictures of their vaccination cards to the Safe Travels website in advance. As soon as travelers arrived at the airport, the waiting time for the control lines was more than an hour and there were finger pointing.

“They said about 90% of the cards submitted through Safe Travels have not yet been verified by Hawaii,” one traveler told KHON2.

Meanwhile, the state said that 70% of travelers didn’t properly follow the instructions when uploading their cards. Originally, Hawaii only allowed uploading images from the official CDC cards, but later allowed vaccination cards from health care providers or hospitals to be uploaded.

“Uploading the vaccination card is not easy. Unless you are tech-savvy, regardless of whether seniors are having difficulty uploading the carry card, or the phone functions do not have this ability to upload the card or vaccination card,” Bob Burr, the Operations manager of the agency behind Safe Travels, told KITV4.

California has no immediate plans to introduce vaccination records for travel, but Hawaii’s challenges with the Safe Travels system raise some questions about the California digital system. As soon as Californians submit information about their vaccination card (name, date of birth, cell phone number, email), they should receive their digital card with a QR code.

The operative phrase there is “should”.

Tens of thousands of Californians report delays in getting their QR codes, and a recent report from the San Francisco Chronicle describes some of the problems behind the scenes with the system (SFGATE and San Francisco Chronicle are both owned and operated by Hearst) independently ).

According to the Chronicle, many of vaccine site records are incomplete, with typos, or otherwise inaccurate, and the state has a team of 80 people who work on troubleshooting and correcting records. There is no timetable for when there will be minimal delays.

Only 1.4 million people have successfully received their digital records, which is about 3.5% of the California population. If restaurants, bars, sports venues, and other businesses considering vaccine passports choose to use the state’s digital system, it is highly unlikely that the state will be able to cope with the influx of vaccinees using their digital Find maps, process them quickly and efficiently, and thus create another Hawaiian airport location.

The other important lesson for California is how unvaccinated individuals respond to companies requiring proof of vaccination to enter.

Bars and restaurants on Oahu that were operating at full capacity were instructed to require customers to provide evidence of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result within the past 48 hours to enter, and Hawaii News Now reported that the facilities subsequently “Eaten alive” by unhappy customers have been using the policy.

“That would be difficult to handle and I didn’t want to get my employees into a situation,” said one restaurant owner who does not follow the order.

Reports of unruly restaurant goers are piling up in California, and the Hawaii Restaurant Association said it could not name a single restaurant that is still sticking to the order after widespread backlash.

From a practical standpoint, it seems unlikely that companies can rely on the state’s slow digital system as the primary method of checking vaccinations. Instead, companies must use physical vaccination cards that are easily forged or lost. However, physical cards still have the issues of compliance and the situation where employees can be confronted and harassed by customers.

The only development that could potentially differentiate the California vaccination record from the Hawaiian one is the full FDA approval of the COVID-19 vaccines, which in theory would remove the remaining excuses for not vaccinating. Rutherford expects full approval sometime in the fall.

“Once it is not just an emergency approval, certain people who have hesitated can move on and the vaccine can be more easily prescribed,” Rutherford said. “The reason places like the US military haven’t mandated the vaccine is because it’s not fully approved. Once that is the case, people can start pushing buttons and implement it. “
