MORGAN HILL (CBS 5) – Two people who live in a large home in Morgan Hill were arrested on suspicion of taking a handyman hostage and forcing him to make repairs to the home.

Investigators said the 50-year-old victim was lured to a home in the 200 block of Caldwell Court Monday morning. The sprawling 4,600-square-foot home has five bedrooms and is equipped with a pool, beach volleyball court and tennis court.

“He was assaulted, his life was threatened and he was forced to do work in the house,” Sgt. Jose Cardoza of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office told CBS 5.

Investigators said 36-year-old Jason DeJesus and 33-year-old Chanelle Troedson beat the repairman, threatened to kill him and forced him to repair several items in the home over a six-hour period. Repairs included a dishwasher and a broken door.

“The victim was pretty scared. He was pretty shaken up and scared by this whole incident,” Cardoza said. “What he told investigators is that he was just trying to do what he was told, which was to wait for the opportunity to escape.”

On Monday evening, authorities said the suspects forced the repairman into his truck. While one of the suspects was driving, the victim was told they were going to the home of a suspect's relative in Santa Clara to make further repairs.

They stopped at a gas station on Santa Teresa Blvd. and Cottle Road in South San Jose. The repairman escaped as the suspects left to pay for gas and snacks. DeJesus and Troedson were arrested by police shortly afterwards.

Other residents of the home declined an interview with CBS 5.

Investigators said the repairman had done work for De Jesus' mother two months ago.

“The work was not carried out at that time to relatives of the suspect and, moreover, there was a dispute about the services provided, the victim was not paid in full. “That kind of impacted what happened last night,” Cardoza said.

DeJesus and Troedson are charged with multiple crimes, including false imprisonment, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and conspiracy.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Sgt. Julian Quinonez or Detective Sgt. Dave Roberts at the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office at (408) 808-4500. Tips can also be left anonymously at (408) 808-4431.

Macy’s Christmas tree lights in San Francisco took place a week earlier

Union Square was lit up with Macy’s annual Christmas tree lights on Thursday. KTVU’s Jana Katsuyama reports that the event was held a week early to encourage sales in the collapsing retail corridor.

SAN FRANCISCO – A holiday tradition returned to Union Square in San Francisco on Thursday night when city officials gathered to light the Macy’s Christmas tree.

Seamus Stannard, 9, from San Francisco, was the star of the evening who was honored to push the giant button to light the tree through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Stannard then posed for photos with the city police and fire department and was given a shopping spree at Macy’s.

“It felt amazing,” said Seamus, “I’ll probably go shopping and see Santa Claus.”

“It feels very emotional,” said Sarah Bennett, Seamus’ mother. so it feels wonderful. “

The glow of the lights lifted the mood of many people.

“They are very beautiful. I like them because walking through them makes me feel like I’m in a fairy tale,” said Taia Ishchenko, a second grader from San Francisco who carried a bag with a newly purchased backpack. She was out shopping in Union Square with her sister, mother, and grandmother.

“We are all vaccinated and I hope this holiday will be more active. We’re going to go shopping now, we’re going to Apple to get a present for my eldest daughter, ”said Maria Ishchenko, Taia’s mother.

In-store decorations reflected a slow return to personal shopping.

“Every year it’s so beautiful. It’s a perfect time to cheer up after all this pandemic,” said Amanda Garcia from South San Francisco, who celebrated her birthday with tea at the Rotunda restaurant and some Christmas shopping.

Union Square is a vacation tradition for her, Amanda Barba and Sonia Flores, all of whom were from South San Francisco.

“We have been doing this for 14 years,” said Flores.

There were some differences this year, however.

“It seems to be a little quieter, not so alive,” said Barba. “It feels different, but I’m thankful it’s back. I mean, I’m thankful that I could come out and enjoy it a bit can .”

“I immediately noticed how empty it is,” said Flores, adding that the people they met were friendly. “The staff was very grateful to the people who were there that afternoon. We drove to four stops. “

The pandemic has taken its toll. Lease signs for vacant stores lined many of the blocks after H&M and other major retailers like Uniqlo and DSW closed their doors.

Many of the remaining stores will advertise Black Friday sales earlier this year, which coincide with the early tree lighting.

“Trying to start the holidays early, given some delays in various deliveries and the like, and just get out of COVID for some joy and mood early,” said Marisa Rodriguez, executive director of the Union Square Alliance.

The San Francisco police chief and mayor said they are planning additional patrols along with an ambassador program to increase security and welcome shoppers back.

“We have already started an increased effort in the Union Square Area and other parts, but during the holiday season,” said Police Chief William Scott. “The ambassador program we retired San Francisco cops stopped. Now we have 23. They also work in the area.”

“Nothing says Christmas like people having fun and shopping,” said Mayor of London Breed. “We’re doing everything we can to make sure this neighborhood, Union Square, is safe.”

Along with the Christmas tree, Union Square will also bring back the lights on the menorah on November 28 to celebrate Hannukah.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – A San Francisco man says he was held at gunpoint while washing his car, then robbed and imprisoned in a bathroom with his family.

Now he’s doing more than just sharing his story. He and his family took a proactive approach to security for their entire neighborhood.

It was a typical Friday night for the man in his forties who asked not to reveal his name as he washed his car at his house near McLaren Park.

A surveillance video from across the street shows a vehicle lapping the block at least four times before the incident happened. A gun is seen in the suspect’s hand as he approaches the victim, who drops his bucket and is forced into the garage.

“They took me to my house, where my family took us all to the bathroom,” says the man behind the sunglasses and face mask.

EXCLUSIVE: San Francisco couple forcibly robbed after being chased home

When two suspects made their demands, “They said where is the money, where is the money?” and stole thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry, and the husband’s wife and two daughters endured what they believed to be a bleak end.

“I thought either someone would be shot or someone would call the police, like our neighbors, and it would be a hostage situation,” said her 11-year-old daughter.

The man took off his glasses to reveal the deep bruises around his eye and stated, “They just pressed my face against the wall to let me know this was a real situation.”

The rest of the family was not physically injured.

Even so, this husband and father are aware that the emotional burden is much higher and burst into tears for a moment.

This story doesn’t stop there.

The father and 11-year-old daughter went out the next day and met with every single neighbor and left letters describing what happened to them.

“When you see a neighbor and a child tell them what happened … there is more heart. They take it to heart immediately,” says the man, who believes that a police officer who heeded the same warning Intimidates neighbors.

The family believes the immediate abandonment of their property kept them alive, and for that they are grateful.

“If they want your belongings, don’t let them harm you or your family or anything that is irreplaceable,” the daughter said.

The San Francisco man speaks out to show how neighborly love, like sharing a warning or surveillance video, can make a difference.

“I love the city, but the city is changing. Be careful. Be vigilant, if you have to wash your cars, do it with a neighbor.”

The SFPD continues to search for the suspects.

MORGAN HILL (CBS 5) – Two people who live in a large house in Morgan Hill were arrested on suspicion of holding a workman hostage and forcing him to do repairs.

Investigators said the 50-year-old victim was lured into a house on the 200 block of Caldwell Court Monday morning. The spacious 4,600 square meter house has five bedrooms and is equipped with a pool, a beach volleyball court and a tennis court.

“He was attacked, his life was threatened, and he was forced to work the house,” Sgt. Jose Cardoza of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office told CBS 5.

Detectives said 36-year-old Jason DeJesus and 33-year-old Chanelle Troedson beat the repairman, threatened to kill him, and forced him to fix several items around the house within six hours. The repairs included a dishwasher and a broken door.

“The victim was pretty scared. He was pretty shaken and scared of this whole incident, ”said Cardoza. “What he told investigators is that he was just trying to do what he was told and waiting for the opportunity to escape.”

On Monday evening, authorities said the suspects had forced the handyman into his truck. As one of the suspects drove, the victim was told they would be traveling to a suspect’s relative’s home in Santa Clara for additional repairs.

They stopped at a gas station on Santa Teresa Blvd. and Cottle Road in South San Jose. The handyman escaped when the suspects left to pay for gasoline and snacks. DeJesus and Troedson were arrested by police shortly afterwards.

Other people who lived at home declined to be interviewed by CBS 5.

Investigators said the handyman worked for De Jesu’s mother two months ago.

“The work was not being done to relatives of the suspect at the time, and there was also a dispute over services rendered, the victim was not fully paid. That kind of boil over into what happened last night, ”Cardoza said.

DeJesus and Troedson face multiple criminal offenses, including false imprisonment, kidnapping, attack with a lethal weapon, criminal threats, and conspiracy.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Sgt. Julian Quinonez or Detective Sgt. Dave Roberts at the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office at (408) 808-4500. Tips can also be left anonymously at (408) 808-4431.

“Major League Baseball is grateful to the Rockies, the city of Denver, and the state of Colorado for supporting this summer’s All-Star Game. We value their flexibility and enthusiasm to deliver a first class event for our game and the region. We look forward to celebrating the best players in our sport and entertaining fans around the world, ”said Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. in a statement.

MLB officials said they chose the Rockies because they were already in the process of applying for a future All-Star game.

“The Rockies had come up with a detailed hotel, event space, and security plan that took months to assemble, and the MLB staff had already made several on-site visits to Denver. In addition, Governor Jared Polis and Mayor Michael Hancock have pledged to provide the facilities and services necessary to support this year’s celebrations, ”officials said.

“Get ready for a truly epic home run derby one mile above sea level. It’s going to be a lot of fun, ”said Governor Polis.

According to Polis, officials appreciate the all-star game. The All-Star Game Celebration will result in sales of approximately $ 190 million in Colorado this year.

“This is incredibly good news for our small businesses, restaurants or hotels and our employees who have suffered from this pandemic,” said Denver Mayor Michael Hancock on Tuesday.

Both Hancock and Polis expect Coors Field to be at full capacity.

“The state is moving away from our voting system on April 16 as a mandatory policy. I think everyone expects a full, sold-out stadium in July,” said Polis.

The San Francisco-based company, whose merchandise is available in parts of the Bay Area, New York and, more recently, Seattle, said it served more than 400,000 meals in two years of operation.

The co-founders of Shef, both sons of immigrants who witnessed their own parents’ struggles to forge a new life, see the company’s mission as a social one, helped by the widespread pandemic unemployment among restaurant workers and others who Need income opportunities becomes even more urgent.

“When we started the company, our focus was on helping immigrants and refugees access significant economic opportunities from home,” said Co-CEO Alvin Salehi, a former technology advisor in the Obama administration. “We’ve heard the same stories over and over again: ‘My spouse works two jobs, I wish I could contribute to the household income, but I can’t afford to pay for daycare.'”

Shef’s name, a mashup of “she” and “cook,” pays homage to the co-founder’s mothers and the company’s demographics. It is said that 83% of cooks are women, 77% women in color and 92% people in color.

But Shef is facing a major roadblock.

“We found this to be illegal in most places in the US, which is why it hasn’t,” said co-CEO Joey Grassia, whose first food company, Kutoa, was inspired by the energy bars he made for himself in college had made.

California was the first state to legalize the sale of homemade meals with the Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations or MEHKO laws passed in 2018 and 2019. However, each county must develop its own program, including annual inspections. In the face of pandemic issues, most health departments lack the bandwidth. So far, only Riverside County has fully implemented this – although some counties in the Bay Area are now preparing for it.

The co-founders spend a lot of time lobbying to legalize their startup.

“We want to work with lawmakers across the country to come up with well-formed legislation to accelerate and accelerate the adoption of home-style meals with a view to post-pandemic recovery,” Salehi said.

Meanwhile, they say they are following the rules by requiring their Bay Area chefs to use commercial kitchens in place of their homes.

Now, Alameda County and the city of Berkeley, which has its own health department, are well on their way to getting home cook permits by spring.

“We think this is a good idea,” said Alameda supervisor Wilma Chan, who sponsored the legislation. “People do it informally; It would be much better to legalize it and have rules. “The county has closed some informal grocery vendors in the past few months.

Chan said she hopes some home cooks will eventually start their own pop-up restaurants to boost the local food economy.

San Mateo County passed a resolution to support household kitchens in 2019 but was held up by the implementation of the inspection process.

“If we had the resources, I would do it now,” said David Canepa, president of the board of directors who jointly sponsored it with regulator Don Horsley. “It’s more important than ever because of the economy.”

After hearing that Alameda and Berkeley are considering video inspections, he said he was encouraged by the idea of a cheaper way to conduct inspections.

Solano County also voted to legalize home cooks in 2019, but has not implemented its system.

Some shef cooks said they couldn’t wait to get permission to use their own kitchens.

California passed AB626 and AB377 in 2018 and 2019, respectively, so people can apply for permission to sell homemade meals. However, Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKO) permits are not available nationwide.

How does it work? Each county must set up an approval process that includes annual inspections. So far, only Riverside County has a full program. Alameda County and Berkeley (which have their own health department) are expected to have approval processes in place in the spring. Solano and San Mateo counties had started legalizing household kitchens but the pandemic stopped them.

How much can be sold? Home restaurants have gross sales of $ 50,000 per year, 30 meals per day, and 60 meals per week.

Is there any training? Home cooks and their assistants must complete an 8-hour course in food protection and pass an exam.

Any other logistics? The home cook can hire a staff member and get help from household members. Helpers must be certified as a grocer. Third-party delivery services are not permitted. The food can be eaten at the chef’s home, picked up to take away or delivered by chefs and their helpers.

Are there any foods that are not covered by the MEHKO regulations? A separate California law governs the operation of Cottage Food and allows 34 types of homemade foods to be sold, including baked goods, candy, dried fruit, dry noodles, vegetable and potato chips, vegetable soup mix, and other items.

“It sucks that Alameda County doesn’t allow home cooking,” said Beena Hasan, who commutes from her home in Pleasanton to commercial kitchens in San Jose or San Francisco to prepare food from her home in Pakistan. “That dampened a lot of things.”

Even so, she loves to make the recipes that she has collected from relatives over the years.

“What I would cook for my family at home is the type of food I cook for my customers,” she said. “I use organic as much as possible, mill my own spices, don’t use anything in boxes.”

Matt Jorgenson co-founded Josephine, a home cook marketplace similar to Shef. It was closed in early 2018 after about two years for legal reasons. He and his co-founders now work on the Cook Alliance, a nonprofit that has guidelines for legalizing home cooking.

He sees Shef “as part of the energy to make this widely known and accepted” but has some concerns that it is a venture-backed startup. Shef raised $ 8.8 million last summer.

“Any company that tries to do this with the best of intentions but raises millions of venture capital puts it in a ‘unicorn or broke’ mentality,” he said. “The pressure to get it working at the risk of chefs with direct liability will always be there.”

Shef’s co-founders said they had decided to raise funds to bring the company to as many people as possible in order to alleviate the financial troubles of the pandemic.

“We will not compromise the safety of chefs or customers as we grow,” said Salehi. “Our investors are focused on a mission.”

The company is cutting chefs’ income by 15%, but for now also charging them the cost of DoorDash deliveries. When counties legalize home kitchens, external delivery services are not allowed. As a result, chefs need to offer pickup, make their own deliveries, or allow food on-site.

Chef Mark Seiden, a longtime computer security consultant and self-described “old chowhound,” said he appreciated the opportunity to eat local Indian specialties that are not normally served in restaurants. For example, a shef cook from the Indian state of Kerala uses matta rice, a native variety grown there, he said.

Shef Food “is like what you would cook for your families at home,” he said. “The taste is authentic.”

He also found it to be good value for money, especially when taking advantage of the companies’ promotional offers.

“It’s like $ 20 for a combination of dishes that will give me dinner and a couple of lunches,” he said.

The downside: “It’s not an impulse buy,” he said. “You have to order two days in advance.”

After a decade as a home mom, Hasan said she found it “liberating and empowering” to put her culinary legacy into practice.

“There are people out there who can really benefit from the extra income,” she said. “Thank goodness my husband still has his job, but if we were in a different situation it would be a lifesaver.”
