PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Wheeler struck out 11 in seven innings, Bryce Harper hit a three-run home run and Kyle Schwarber added a solo shot to help the Philadelphia Phillies earn a four-game win over the San Francisco Giants by 6 :1 to complete victory on Monday.

Harper singled deep against Giants rookie Mason Black, spoiling the major league debut of the Giants right-hander, who pitched in the fifth inning against the team he rooted for as a kid.

“I hope he enjoyed it with his family, his teammates and everything else because there is only one debut,” Harper said.

This season's Phillies are winning as many as the ones Black cheered for as a child.

The major league-leading Phillies (25-11) won their sixth straight and have won 10 of 11 and 17 of 20 to open a three-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East.

The Phillies have also won 10 straight games at Citizens Bank Park, just two wins shy of matching the team record set in 2012. Philadelphia also set a franchise record with 11 consecutive wins against NL West opponents.

“I feel like we win in different ways every night. And it's a completely different player who makes it big, be it a hitter or a pitcher. It’s never the same guy, which is nice,” catcher JT Realmuto said. “There is not too much pressure on a player. We all feel like we play really well together and have a lot of fun, and the guys contribute every night.”

Harper hit a home run for the second straight game and his eighth hit of the season made it 4-0 against Black (0-1). Black made his major league debut in front of his parents, younger brother, girlfriend and numerous friends and family who came to watch him play against his favorite childhood team.

The 24-year-old Black – rated the seventh-best prospect in baseball according to MLB.com – was the Giants' third-round pick in the 2021 draft out of Lehigh University. Black recorded a 1-2-3 first inning that included strikeouts by JT Realmuto and Harper, the latter of which was caught in the 88 mph changeup.

Black allowed eight hits, five runs and three walks. He struck out four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Wheeler (4-3) showed the rookie how it's done. He rebounded from an 0-3 start – he allowed a total of six runs in his first three starts – to win his fourth straight start. Wheeler allowed one run, walked one and lowered his ERA to 1.64.

“Today Wheels did what Zack does every time he goes out there. It was fun to watch and keep us in the game,” Harper said.

Matt Strahm pitched a scoreless eighth and Orion Kerkering pitched the ninth to complete the five.

With shortstop Trea Turner out for at least six weeks with a left hamstring strain, his replacements are starting to fill the void. Bryson Stott moved from second base to shortstop and snagged a great grounder from Wilmer Flores in the first to set up an inning-ending double play. Whit Merrifield started second and gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the fourth.

Harper had a three-run toss in the fifth and Nick Castellanos, who hit 37 doubles last season, got his first hit of the year later in the inning for a 5-0 lead.

Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm went 0-for-4, ending his hitting streak at 18 games.

HUGE BREAK

The Giants lost for the sixth time in seven games, falling 6-14 on the road. They lost two of three games in Boston and ended their 10-game trip with three games at Colorado, the only team behind San Francisco in the NL West. Maybe there will be a Mile High fortune change for the Giants — they are 18-8 at Coors Field with a plus-51 run differential since 2021.

“We need to clean up,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We have to play better. We left home one game under .500 and not playing very well. I thought (the road) could be a pretty good spot for us since we hadn't been playing well. And now we’re playing terribly.”

After 2-1 with two outs in ninth place, the Giants combined it with a bizarre RBI triple and scored eight runs in the last three innings. San Francisco had to use nine different pitchers.

“That was the toughest performance of the year for our club,” said Giants manager Gabe Kapler.

That’s a strong statement considering the courage the NL West leaders have shown throughout the season. That latest win came just two nights after the Giants made up a 4-0 deficit in the ninth inning in a 5-4, 10-inning triumph in Arizona.

The Giants played their third consecutive extra inning game. They leveled the game with a two-out rally in ninth place and then bounced back after losing a three-round lead in 10th place.

LaMonte Wade brought the Giants on the 11th Belt followed with a double shot over the right field wall. Kris Bryant crowned the rally with an RBI double.

“That’s a really good lineup,” said Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff. “Of course a lot of these guys have multiple World Series rings. A moment is not too big for either of these guys. You saw everything. “

All four of the Giants’ 11th innings were run by Sal Romano (0-1) in his Brewers debut.

Belt also hit a solo shot in the fourth solo and has three homers in the last two nights. Bryant and Buster Posey both had three hits.

Jake McGee (4-2) landed 9-5 at the end of the 11th. McGee was not supposed to line up on Saturday but was called upon when the game reached the 11th.

“I didn’t have my brace down there or my cup or anything, so they had to do that in extra innings,” said McGee, who was running for the third night in a row.

The Brewers were deprived of a 2-1 win when Tommy La Stella hit a drive in the ninth inning that fell in front of right fielder Avisaíl García on the warning trail. La Stella has been credited with a triple that Bryant scored from the start.

García backed away until he was in front of the wall and took a few steps to the right to find the fly, but never touched the ball when he reached for it.

“I think he got stuck on the wall a bit and then struggled to change direction,” said Brewers manager Craig Counsell. “I think he was preparing to catch against the wall and the ball just didn’t get there and he got a little tied up and his feet got tangled and he couldn’t recover from it.”

La Stella’s hit thwarted Brent Suter’s hopes of saving his first career at the age of 31.

“You have to give La Stella credit,” said Suter. “He just got a barrel on an up-and-in pitch. He got it up there and it moved and all. “

Milwaukee couldn’t reach out to All-Star Josh Hader, one of several brewers on the COVID-19 injured list.

Posey hit a two-run single through a drafted infield and Brandon Crawford drove home a prey fly run to help the Giants take a 5-2 lead over Miguel Sánchez in 10th place.

Luis Urías reduced the lead to 5-4 by starting the bottom of the 10th with a two-run homer to center Jarlin García in the middle. A failure later, Willy Adames also sent a García pitch over the midfield wall to tie him.

The Brewers led 2-1 into ninth as Woodruff pitched six strong innings and Tyrone Taylor broke his slump.

Woodruff struck eight, allowing six hits, a run, and a step.

Andrew Benintendi’s tenure with the Royals was not optimal.

After Benintendi was transferred from the Red Sox to Kansas City in February as part of a three-team, seven-player deal, he fought during his first spring training in Arizona, which happened to carry over to the regular season.

In his first 15 games as a member of the Royals, the 26-year-old pitched an overwhelming .193 / .270 / .246 slash line, six walks and 17 strikes over with just three additional hits (all doubles), four RBI and three stolen bases 63 record appearances.

During that time, Benintendi – most notably Kansas City’s # 2 hitter – failed to serve a single ball and scored a dismal wRC + of 51 to prove his efforts.

On the morning of April 21, it looked like the previous round one picks were still on their way to the regression that began in the final month of the 2019 season.

But against the Rays that day, Benintendi did something he hadn’t done in a while: make very hard contact, and he did it twice, rolling up a pair of balls in the fourth and eighth innings.

Both balls the left-handed squared went for lineouts, but the fact that he was more than once in solid contact was encouraging – and a harbinger of positive things to come.

Since then, Benintendi has been on the move lately. He hit the base on Saturday with an eight-game streak and undoubtedly put together his best performance of the season so far against the Twins at Target Field.

The Cincinnati native, who finished in seventh place and started in left field for Kansas City, hit the record with two 3-4 home runs – scoring his second and third homers of the season, two RBI and three runs while leading his squad to an 11-3 win over Minnesota.
