The gathering brought together more than 100 executives, program directors, community leaders, public officials, and other key stakeholders from around the Golden State working to close the digital divide and create digital equity. The goals of the summit were to highlight best practices; learn more about current and future needs of vulnerable communities; and identify challenges, solutions, and available funding resources. The summit also served as a moment to celebrate the work of Comcast’s valued digital equity partners across California, who worked throughout the pandemic to help drive Internet adoption and provide digital literacy training for those in need.

In addition, the company announced it has exceeded its expanded goal to launch 1,250 Lift Zones before the end of this year. Comcast’s award-winning Lift Zones program provides free WiFi access in neighborhood community centers nationwide. Since September 2020, Lift Zones have enabled nearly six million free WiFi user sessions for students, veterans, seniors, and adults.

According to a consumer survey of users who visited a Lift Zone:

• 4 in 10 report they would not have had Internet access without the Lift Zone.

• 50% of low-income households in major Comcast markets are within walking distance of a lift zone.

• 58% of Lift Zone users strongly believe that the site helps them achieve more.

• 58% report the Lift Zone reduces stress with studying, working remotely, and/or managing tasks online.

• 56% say the Lift Zone is critical for success at school, work, and/or managing tasks online.

• 92 percent of sites report that being a Lift Zone helps them increase digital equity in their communities.

The Lift Zones program is part of Comcast’s Project UP – a comprehensive initiative to advance digital equity and build a future of unlimited possibilities. Backed by a $1 billion commitment, Project UP will help reach tens of millions of people with the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to succeed in a digital world.

Matlin portrays a custodian at a school for the deaf, whose burgeoning romantic relationship with a hearing speech teacher (Best Actor Oscar nominee William Hurt) becomes rocky due to their differing thoughts on speech and deafness. The film also received Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Piper Laurie) and Best Adapted Screenplay (which original playwright Medoff cowrote with Hesper Anderson).

The Killers

This 1964 thriller was the second feature film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s classic existential short story (the 1946 version starring Burt Lancaster may be more well-known). Hemingway’s tale has long been praised for the economy of its storytelling, and this film, too — courtesy of Gene L. Coon’s screenplay and Don Siegel’s direction — keeps propelling the action forward. Things begin when two hitmen (portrayed by Lee Marvin and Clu Gulager) arrive at a school seeking a teacher (John Cassavetes), and things only intensify from there. The film is fairly brutal for its time, and anticipates some of the violent action Siegel would also later incorporate in films like Dirty Harry. The Killers was originally intended to be one of the first made-for-TV movies, but NBC deemed it too intense for television, and the film was released to theaters. Also starring Angie Dickinson, Ronald Reagan, Claude Akins and Norman Fell, it remains a noir crime classic on par with the Lancaster-led film.

Orson Welles’ 1941 classic is regularly at, or very near, the top of many people’s list of greatest movies of all time, and watching it again (or for the first time) tonight, you will be reminded why. After nearly 80 years, the stunningly original innovation that Welles put into the film’s direction and camerawork, with the help of Oscar-nominated cinematographer Gregg Toland, helps it look like it could have been made in the modern era — it’s easy to forget it was produced in the early ’40s. It’s all the more impressive when you realize that Welles made this masterful, Best Picture Oscar-nominated film when he was only in his mid 20s. Along with directing (for which he received an Oscar nomination), producing and cowriting Citizen Kane (with Herman J. Mankiewicz; the duo won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay), Welles also stars in his Best Actor Oscar-nominated title role, a not-so-subtle dramatization of tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Welles leads an equally incredible cast that also includes Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, Everett Sloane and more.

For those who want to whisper secrets to the real Santa Claus, the Great Dickens Christmas Fair is for you.

Let’s call it miracles on Geneva Avenue, because children know one when they see one. There are large crowds who meet the legend with a real beard and a deep laugh.

Santa Claus, played by veteran 80-year-old actor Will Wood, isn’t a dull-eyed department store that’s overfed and stuffed into a polyester suit.

Wood is a highlight of the fair, which takes place at Cow Palace every year until Christmas in the 20th year.

It’s a Bay Area tradition for many families who love to stroll through Victorian London at dusk with a stretch of snow on the ground and 1,000+ lights created for a magical, unforgettable landscape.

Wood calls it a Christmas card that comes to life.

“You see the whole family in costume,” he said. “People come with the spirit of true faith.”

Thousands of children have sat on Wood’s lap over the years, and their affectionate inquiries range from world peace to helping a sick grandmother. Every now and then there is a surprise, like the 5-year-old who asked about a Lamborghini.

Santa Claus is one of more than 800 characters walking around. Queen Victoria, accompanied by Prince Albert, also mingles with the visitors.

She loves it very much. After all, this is London without bad weather or Brexit.

“I have no idea what you are talking about,” said the Queen when asked about the controversy of the 21st century. “I leave all politics to my ministers.”

It’s a full British experience on the 3.5 acre site. Visitors can see a show, try delicious treats like banger and mash, learn to fence, or play boot the cat. At Mr. Fezziwig’s dance party, you can practice waltzes, jigs and polkas with patient actors who know the steps.

When the afternoon turns into evening, there’s the popular adult-only show, the Saucy French Postcard Tableaux Revue.

Costumes, says fair manager Kevin Patterson, are “admired but not needed”.

“It’s both an experience and a visual feast,” says Patterson. “We want people to feel like they are in the story. We work very hard to ensure that people get carried away with the feeling and the aesthetic. “

Patterson, whose parents Ron and Phyllis started Mass, remembers the awe he felt as a child when he got lost wherever it is Christmas Eve.

There is so much to see – from sailors with eye patches to chimney sweeps with rotting teeth – trade show attendees forget their phones.

Scrooge never used one. Why should they do this?
