The man who was washed out to sea while fishing off a rock on Monday near Muir Beach has been identified as Jose Padilla, a San Francisco restaurant worker.

Padilla washed ashore Friday, near the spot he was fishing with his two cousins. His fiance Shauna, Hinson confirmed the news on Everloved.com, where she posted about the accident while raising funds for a memorial service.

“He was fishing with his cousins near Muir Beach and was knocked off a rock by a sneaker wave,” Hinson wrote. “His cousin tried to save him but was unsuccessful. The US Coast Guard was unable to locate him after 18 hours, even with the help of Marin County Sheriff’s dept., the National Parks Service (NPS), and CHP.”

Hinson wrote that the money would help “bring him home to his family in Honduras. Before that, we want to host a memorial to give everyone an opportunity to say goodbye. These funds will help pay for that service and for additional expenses of getting him back to his mother.”

Padilla’s cousins were rescued by helicopter on Monday, after the tide came in and stranded the trio on rocks. A witness told Marin County firefighters they saw one of the men swept off the rocks around 1:30 pm The other two weren’t injured, authorities said.

The National Park Service said in a tweet the men hiked to the water from the Muir Beach Overlook.

Hinson’s page collecting funds for the memorial can be found at https://bit.ly/3gJ6e5b.

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday that the man who was shot and killed by police at the San Francisco International Airport on Jan. 20 was 37-year-old Nelson Waynezhi Szeto.

Szeto, whose city of residence is unknown, died after a confrontation with police near the BART station entrance at the airport’s International Terminal. Initial reports from officials said Szeto was armed with two handguns, but an investigation by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office later revealed that he had two airsoft guns.

The situation started with multiple reports made about a suspicious individual in the International Terminal, officials said.

The San Francisco Police Department responded at 7:26 am and established that the suspect “appeared to be armed with a handgun,” the police department said in a statement.

Officers reportedly tried to calm down Szeto using nonlethal measures, but he continued “to advance,” and officers fired multiple shots “to neutralize the threat,” airport spokesperson Doug Yakel said in an email statement Jan. 20.

A medical team administered CPR, but Szeto died from his injuries, officials said.

A bystander in the area was also injured in the gunfire and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Yakel said.

The California Department of Justice announced that same day that it’s investigating the shooting. Under Assembly Bill 1506, which was passed in 2020, a state prosecutor is required to “investigate incidents of an officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian.”

Under the bill, Szeto is considered an “unarmed civilian” as he wasn’t in possession of a deadly weapon. Airsoft guns are considered “replica guns” and “are not considered deadly weapons unless they are used in some particular manner likely to produce death or great bodily injury (eg, as a bludgeon).”

MORRO BAY, San Luis Obispo (AP) – A man who was killed in a shark attack in central California on Christmas Eve was visiting his family and had decided to boogie board, friends and family members said.

Tomas Butterfield, 42, of Sacramento, was killed Friday morning in Morro Bay, near Morro Bay State Beach, a California State Parks spokesman confirmed to the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

Butterfield was traveling to the area for a family reunion at his mother’s house, Grant Butterfield, his uncle, told the newspaper.

Butterfield moved several times after his mother and father’s divorce and attended high school in Alaska, his uncle said.

“His mother would go on vacation somewhere, fall in love with the place and eventually move there. So there was a lot of movement, ”he said. “They landed in Ketchikan, Alaska.”

Tomas was unmarried and had recently worked for his father in a medical laboratory equipment repair company in Sacramento. He loved fishing, boogie boarding, and golf, said his uncle.

“Tomas was very calm and had a certain ironic sense of humor,” he said. “If you could get the full laugh out of him, you were a winner.”

Butterfield was dragged out of the waves after a surfer saw him face down in the water while a boogie board drifted nearby. He died on the scene.

The shark was likely a white man, said Eric Endersby, director of the port of Morro Bay.

Morro Bay is about 200 miles north of Los Angeles.

A person in San Francisco became the first in the United States to have an identified case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office confirmed on Twitter on Wednesday.

The case has been identified by the San Francisco Department of Public Health and UCSF, the governor’s office said.

The person returned from South Africa on November 22, said Dr. Infectious disease expert Peter Chin Hong told KCBS Radio on Wednesday afternoon. The person was fully vaccinated but had not received a booster.

. @ CAPublicHealth, @SF_DPH & @UCSF have discovered a case of the Omicron variant.

As we learn more about Omicron, there is no need to panic, but we should remain vigilant.

We know how to protect ourselves from COVID – get vaccinated, get boosters & wear a mask.

– California Governor’s Office (@CAgovernor) December 1, 2021

The Biden government decided late last month to restrict travel from southern Africa, where the variant was first identified and widely used. Case clusters have also been identified in around two dozen other countries.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tightened US testing rules for overseas travelers, including requiring that all travelers be tested within one day of boarding a flight to the US regardless of vaccination status. It also considered ordering tests upon arrival.

Officials said these measures would only “buy up” the country to learn more about the new variant and take appropriate precautions, but given its portability, the arrival of Omicron in the US is inevitable.

This is a development story and will be updated.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
