The popular Fleet Week flight show and boat parade are back live and in person after the post-pandemic celebration went live in 2020. Expect the official viewing areas around Fisherman’s Wharf and on Marina Green to be quite large on Sunday October 3rd through October 11th.

For many indoor activities and crowded outdoor events, specific guidelines apply to vaccinations and / or requirements for negative test evidence. Please check Fleetweeksf.org and specific venues for the latest updates and announcements.

What is San Francisco Fleet Week?

Founded in 1981 by then Mayor Dianne Feinstein, San Francisco Fleet Week is the largest celebration in the country for the US armed forces, especially the Navy and Coast Guard.

Every October – coinciding with the Italian Heritage Weekend and overlapping with the city’s largest free outdoor music festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (celebrated online in October) – locals and visitors alike visit Embarcadero, Marina Green, Fisherman’s Wharf and around around the bay for a parade of ships and weekend air shows (October 8-10). In the four decades since its inception, San Francisco Fleet Week has become a model for similar celebrations across the country.

This year the participants can be there all week and get an insight into the daily life of a seaman on guided boat tours. The USS Hornet Museum in Alameda is also open for tours and guided tours during Fleet Week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Other planned events include an Honor Our Fallen concert with the US Marine Corps 1st Marine Division Band at the Fall Theater; a dog show in Duboce Park with trained K9s to prove their skills; an online retrospective of the veteran’s art show – through 2022 for in-person events – plus plenty of wingsuits, parachutes, and more live airborne entertainment. At Marina Green, participants can visit the Humanitarian Aid Village / STEM Education Center and learn how the military responds to disasters.

What’s the mood?

Fleet Week brings out people of all ages who want to honor soldiers in uniform and those who come mainly to see the planes and naval ships in action. On board ship tours, people may have the option of holding portable rocket launchers, aiming howitzers, and even cranking a mortar into firing position. Children can be seen on their parents’ shoulders, marveling at the aerial photographs, while others lie on blankets in the fields of Marina Green or stroll along the paths on the bridges of San Francisco.

For those with pets, it is a good idea to leave them at home if they don’t like loud noises.

People visit a Navy CH-53 helicopter on the flight deck of the USS Essex, which is docked at Pier 30-32, as Fleet Week 2017 begins. Photo: Michael Macor / Die Chronik

Where is it?

Most of the official Fleet Week events take place along the Marina and Embarcadero, with a few other stops in town. The K9 Heroes dog show will take place on October 9th at 10am in Duboce Park. Box seats and VIP seats for the air show and the boat parade are available online.

For the weekend air shows, get to Marina Green Park early to find the best seating. Twin Peaks, Pier 39, and Crissy Field also offer great views. Viewing is free. Premium seats are available for purchase.

How do I get there?

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – Salesforce’s annual conference Dreamforce opened on Tuesday morning for the first time since 2019 on Tuesday morning. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be scaled back from the usual 170,000 participants.

“Dreamforce is known for being such a big event. There will be 1,000 people here this year and over 160,000 will attend online,” said Colin Fleming, Salesforce senior vice president of global brand marketing.

RELATED: Dreamforce 2019 in full swing at San Francisco’s Moscone Center

Salesforce still put a lot of emphasis on presentations. Howard Street between 3rd and 4th Streets is closed and has been converted into an outdoor convention floor with a stage where big names like the rock band The Foo Fighters will perform.

The Foo Fighters will perform on this stage for Dreamforce in San Francisco tonight. The Salesforce Convention was canceled last year and will be smaller this year – with 1,000 participants instead of the usual 170,000. Vaccination and daily testing required. pic.twitter.com/6mjKsEiGCn

– Amy Hollyfield (@amyhollyfield) September 21, 2021

“We have Will Smith, Emmy Award winner Jason Sudeikis … Dreamforce Magic is back here in San Francisco,” said Fleming.

But it’s not quite the magic that businesses in the area need.

The owner of The Grove restaurant on Mission and 3rd Street says the 170,000 visitors last year really lifted his business.

“It was incredibly important to us and everyone around the block. They (Salesforce) bought the restaurants, parts of the museums. It was a big part of our annual budget, our viability. Those three days were equivalent.” for three weeks, “said Kenneth Zankel.

However, he went on to say that 1,000 people sound good by COVID standards.

WATCH: Here’s what Bay Area traffic controllers are doing to prepare for the return of the San Francisco workers

“If it weren’t for last year it would be really disappointing, but 1,000 is better than zero. And hopefully this is the beginning of further development, ”said the restaurant owner.

He said business picked up again on Monday when people arrived in San Francisco for Dreamforce.

“When you look at the people walking around. That didn’t happen down here, ”he said, looking down Mission Street.

In a gruesome twist, it won’t be open for happy hour or dinner at Dreamforce. It closes at 3 p.m. because it can’t find enough workers to fill the evenings, another lingering effect of COVID-19.

“We get it bit by bit, but it’s a fight. It’s the ultimate strange dichotomy, you have a demand and then you can’t meet it,” said Zankel.

RELATED: How will downtown San Francisco businesses on Union Square recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?

The number of people isn’t the only change at Dreamforce this year. Participants will also be presented with pandemic safety protocols.

“We will be doing multiple tests on site, vaccination of course, with tests every single day we attend the conference,” said Fleming.

Dreamforce runs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

NOVATO (KPIX) – An in-depth report from the Centers for Disease Control highlighting a serious COVID-19 outbreak at a school in Marin County gives a clear picture of the do’s and don’ts for schools reopening in full.

The outbreak occurred at Our Lady of Loretto School in Novato in May 2021. The new details of how an unvaccinated teacher inadvertently spreads the virus is having a greater impact on all school communities.

CONTINUE READING: COVID: Unvaccinated teachers in Marin County infected students in May Delta variant outbreak

An unvaccinated teacher who showed symptoms nonetheless worked at the school for two days before receiving a test and infected at least 26 others, including students, parents and siblings.

“I think it caused a lot of suffering to the school and the students,” said mother Annie Smith.

A seating map detailed in the CDC report shows how the nameless teacher quickly spread the virus to half the classroom in late May, infecting 8 out of 10 students in the first two rows.

“This is our largest outbreak in the county that we have investigated to date,” said Dr. Lisa Santora from Marin Health and Human Services.

The teacher read aloud to the students but did not wear a mask.

CONTINUE READING: COVID: Bay Area health officials reaffirm face-to-face training amid Delta variant concerns

Dr. Lisa Santora is one of the authors of the report, which is based on 230+ on-campus tests, contact tracing, and whole genome sequencing, showing the highly transmissible Delta variant even in vaccinated adults.

“With the alpha variant, one or two other people could get sick if you were sick. With the Delta variant, we see the attack rate between five and six people, ”said Dr. Santora.

It’s the perfect example of how the combination of the unvaccinated and no mask can lead to widespread transmission in school that is preventable.

Layered protection, including masking, staying home with symptoms, and getting vaccinations when allowed, can keep schools open and safe for personal learning.

“It was pretty crazy, but we are glad that you are back in school now and can experience it again in person,” said Dr. Santora.

Health experts say if this can happen in Marin County, where it’s heavily vaccinated, the consequences can be much worse in largely unvaccinated communities across the country.

MORE NEWS: Oakland teachers, staff demonstrating for increased COVID testing in schools

KPIX contacted the school and the Archdiocese of San Francisco, which oversees the parish schools in Marin County, but so far there has been no response.

Schools in San Francisco will reopen in person starting Monday

Teachers at the John Muir Elementary School in San Francisco were busy on Friday preparing their classrooms for the school reopening on Monday. Every school in the district has been approved by the health department to reopen.

SAN FRANCISCO – Teachers at the John Muir Elementary School in San Francisco were busy on Friday preparing their classrooms for the school reopening on Monday.

“This is the day we dreamed of,” said Vince Matthews, superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District.

Matthews said the district has been working to develop plans to get students into class and keep the coronavirus out if possible.

“We are committed to implementing all public health standards and protocols. Each campus has been cleared to reopen by the SF Department of Public Health, ”he said.

This means that all windows can now be opened and closed and all schools have adequate ventilation.

San Francisco schools also follow California health guidelines by requiring that all teachers and staff be vaccinated.

Those who are not vaccinated will have to have a weekly COVID test starting September 7th.

The district is still collecting data on the vaccination rates of its employees. But first results showed a vaccination rate of 98%.

“We look forward to entering the new school year with your new protocols. We have updated them to create the safest conditions for students, families and all workers at school sites,” said Cassondra Curiel, director of the United Educators of San Francisco.

Students in San Francisco this year will learn that there is such a thing as free lunch.
The district checks every child in the district with a free meal, regardless of family income.

From Sunday, everyone 18 years of age and younger can drive Muni free of charge for the next 12 months. You have to wear masks.

The schools also pay special attention to the mental health of the students.

Around 700 students have opted for distance learning. That is less than 2% of the entire school district’s student body.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) begins the new school year on Wednesday, allowing all students to return to campus for the first time since the pandemic began.

“Aside from a small group of elementary school students who were able to return to a hybrid model, this is the first time all of our students are returning to campus from pre-K through 12,” said Superintendent Dr. Shawnterra Moore. “We’re going to be very careful, making sure we’re communicating health and safety expectations and holding ourselves and each other accountable, but we’re happy to have children back.”

Some of the changes include updated HVAC systems, a new focus on healthy hand hygiene, mask requirements for students, staff and visitors, and the addition of 30 mobile disinfection units.

“It’s an ultraviolet, antimicrobial machine,” said interim director of the facilities, John Daley. “Everything that the light hits – it kills the bacteria in the room.”

Daley explained that the units can sanitize a classroom in around 3-4 minutes and an auditorium in around 30 minutes. This cleaning process is done every day after school.

“We call it zapping – we zap every room in the school,” he continued. He says the district will keep these long after the pandemic.

“The amount of germs that is going to be eradicated to keep our children in the classrooms and at school will increase sharply,” he said.

The Hong family attended Buri Buri Elementary School on Tuesday to help their daughter Isabella orientate herself before her first day of school in more than a year.

“We’re nervous, but I think it’s best for Isabella right now to go back to school, be with her friends and socialize – but obviously with a mask and all,” said Christian Hong. “We would not allow her to go back to school – we would teach her at home – if she did not take these measures.”

Superintendent Moore said some families choose to keep their children out of the classrooms by completing an independent study program, but the vast majority of the over 8,000 students in the district will be back in the classrooms.

“Right now I’d say about 80 are interested,” she said.

“There may be students who do not want to wear masks – and such individual situations are handled on a case-by-case basis,” she continued. “Wearing masks has really proven to be a containment strategy that can really minimize the transmission of the virus.”

Workers at four different grocery chains in Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville told the Oakland Post that they will not be receiving any hazard pay in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Oakland and Berkeley city councils each unanimously passed ordinances last February requiring large grocery stores to pay workers an additional $ 5 an hour due to COVID-19 threats, both ordinances stated that once the cities Reached the yellow level, this indicates a minimum of COVID-19 spread – this requirement would end.

Workers at Whole Foods, Grocery Outlet, and Trader Joe’s, based in Oakland or Berkeley, reported that they received their final paychecks in early July, about a month after those cities hit yellow on June 8.

The Oakland Post contacted Oakland City Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas, who drafted The Grocery Store Worker Hazard Pay Emergency Ordinance, to inquire about the termination of Hazard Pay. Bas chief of staff Miya Saika Chen admitted that the ordinance was “bound by state guidelines for safe reopening” and that Oakland had reached the yellow level.

Immediately after Oakland and Berkeley hit the yellow tier of the COVID-19 spread, as state restrictions such as capacity limits were lifted and the Delta variant continued to spread, positive cases of the virus began to rise. A graph showing the data collected by Alameda County shows that the total number of cases in the last 14 days when the county entered the yellow tier on June 8th was 455. By the end of July, that 14-day total exceeded 4,000 cases for three consecutive days, an approximately nine-fold increase.

In response to questions about the phasing out of security due to the increase in COVID-19 cases, Chen stressed the impact of vaccination, as vaccines have been effective in preventing serious health effects related to the virus.

“Our top priority must be to ensure that everyone has accurate information about the vaccines and safe and fair access to the vaccines to prevent another wave of infections,” she said.

Neither Bas nor her staff responded when asked if the council could do or plan to do anything to reintroduce risk money for grocery stores. The Oakland Post asked Berkeley City Councilor Terry Taplin the same question that drafted Berkeley’s Liability Ordinance. He responded by saying that Berkeley city council must issue a new ordinance to reintroduce dangerous goods payment for grocery stores.

“The city is currently examining several options to respond to the Delta variant,” said Taplin. “I will need to consult with the city team and the legal department to discuss what can be done about the new hazard allowance.”

Oakland and Berkeley are unable to pass new hazardous materials payment ordinances through city council action this month as council meetings in both cities are suspended until August. But both Oakland and Berkeley city councils could revisit the issue in September when sessions begin again. The grocery store workers the Oakland Post spoke to believed they should have earned some hazard compensation for their hard work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“[The hazard pay] was so helpful, ”said a Whole Foods employee in Berkeley. “It’s so expensive to live here and I can barely make it. I was able to put some money away and not skimp when I got it. “

Like all workers interviewed for this article, this worker feared retaliation from her employers for talking to the press about her salary and asked not to be named.

With temperature controls suspended, the Berkeley Whole Foods worker said he did not feel safe at work. They also claimed that there was an outbreak of the virus in the convenience food section of their store in May. Although the Oakland Post reached out to Whole Foods to inquire about hazard surcharges, temperature controls and the alleged COVID-19 outbreak, their media team has not responded.

The city of Emeryville, which borders both Oakland and Berkeley, has never required grocery stores to offer their employees a COVID-19 hazard payment. A worker at a Pak ‘N Save in Emeryville who has been with the job for about a year said he had paid the Emeryville minimum wage, which is currently $ 17.13, and has never received any dangerous goods compensation. They said the low pay hit some of their employees particularly hard with families. Children sometimes wait in the Pak ‘N Save break room during shifts as wage rates make it impossible for some grocery store workers to afford childcare.

“They pay us the lowest they can literally pay us,” said the Pak ‘N Save worker. “Many are fed up with it. Lots of people quit. “

Wendy Gutshall, a spokeswoman for Safeway, the company that owns and operates Pak ‘N Save, confirmed that the Emeryville store did not pay any risk money and that Safeway stores in Oakland and Berkeley require payment of the US $ 5 risk money. Dollars stopped after these cities reached the yellow level. Gutshall said Safeway and Pak ‘N Save paid workers March through 13.

Although they are not currently receiving any danger pay, workers at Pak ‘N Save in Emeryville have been exposed to COVID-19. Emails to a Pak ‘N Save employee relayed to The Oakland Post by a regional HR manager indicate that workers in the store were exposed to COVID-19 three times between July 21 and July 28.

The same worker shared a photo of a letter the store posted in its break room, stating that one of its employees recently filed a complaint with the California State Department of Industrial Relations alleging that the store was open for several days Working after you report you must experience COVID-19 symptoms due to staff shortages in the store.

When asked about the complaint, Gutshall said she could not speak to her directly, stating, “For privacy reasons, we cannot provide details on one [worker’s] Situation. “She said workers with COVID-19 symptoms are instructed to go home that the company is in close contact with those workers to investigate their contacts with other workers and to ensure they are receiving adequate medical care , and that these workers have access to 80 hours of quarantine money.

Gutshall says workers must check their temperature when reporting to Pak ‘N Save and Safeway to work. The Pak ‘N Save employee interviewed by Oakland Post said such temperature controls are optional in the store they worked in.

Both the Pak ‘N Save employee and the Whole Foods employee interviewed by the Oakland Post said that as the pandemic progressed, more and more of their employees have quit, which has caused their workload to intensify and increase .

“Everyone has to do a little bit of everything,” said the Pak ‘N Save worker. “We don’t have enough inspectors or enough people walking around the store to help customers and clean up. but [Pak ‘’N Save] is not even ready to raise wages to meet labor demand. “

“The work is getting more and more stressful,” says the Whole Foods employee. “We’re walking on a skeleton crew. And now we have our regular salary again. “

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) – On Pentecost Sunday, the Christian Church’s birthday, the massive Grace Episcopal Cathedral on Nob Hill in San Francisco celebrated something of a rebirth and opened its doors to worshipers for the first time since the pandemic began.

There is a tradition at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco that the ornate Ghiberti front doors remain closed except on special occasions or when the bishop is visiting. On Sunday both conditions were met and the doors were wide open.

CONTINUE READING: Frustrated San Francisco crime victims are demanding that DA Boudin step up enforcement or stand aside

Bishop Marc Andrus presided over Sunday Mass when the cathedral welcomed its congregation for the first time in more than 14 months.

“We saw it on Zoom every Sunday, but this is a great day to see everyone together,” said longtime parishioner Toye Moses. “God must be praised that we are alive today.”

During his sermon, the bishop thanked the people for their patience.

The bishop’s voice broke with emotion as he thanked the people for their patience.

“I am so thankful to you. You protected yourself and your neighbors. You literally saved lives, ”said Bishop Andurs.

CONTINUE READING: Oakland Coliseum bulk vaccination facility closes after administration of more than 500,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses

The masks were kept on and the only singing came from the cathedral’s male choir, but just being in the building with its stained glass windows and high ceiling inspired a feeling you can’t get from Zoom.

“It’s great! And for me the spirit and the height of the building is a nice, strong feeling,” said Linda Rae Hardwick, who was visiting on Sunday.

That is the intention. The cavernous interior, the huge historical murals, the larger-than-life statues, says the bishop, they are all meant to make people feel small – to remind them that there is something bigger out there.

“Everything comes together in this building. It gives us a vision of harmony, beauty and space, which is important, the idea that there is a reality of love that is greater than us, greater than the problems we face, ”he explained.

After the service, the congregation reported outside to receive communion on the front steps. It may have been a safety precaution for COVID-19, but it was also a reminder that while you can get inspiration inside the church walls, you usually have to go outside to help others.

“A lot of people have been under great stress and stress this year,” said parishioner Alma Robinson. “We hope that we will be able to be a better community, then be a better country.”

MORE NEWS: Residents evicted in 2-alarm fire in Oakland Apartment Building

On Sunday at 8:45 am, as part of its reopening ceremony, the church will present a special arts program in which images in honor of Pentecost and the month of heritage of the Asian and Pacific islanders will be projected onto the exterior facade of the cathedral.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – It appears California is now getting its students fully back into class.

Today, two of the state’s largest districts, San Francisco Unified and Los Angeles Unified, began a return to face-to-face learning.

After months of intense back and forth, dozens of preschools and elementary schools opened their doors in San Francisco.

What lessons have we learned and where do we go from here? We had a special guest with us at Getting Answers, California State School Superintendent Tony Thurmond.

RELATED: Some SFUSD students are returning to class for the first time since March 2020

That return to school for SFUSD and to Los Angeles was such a struggle. California was one of the last countries in the county to reopen schools. Why do you think this took so long here in San Francisco and across the state, and what ultimately helped solve this problem?

“You know you can look for a lot of reasons, but I’d point it out if we think about what we were just a few months ago. We had some of the highest rates of COVID-19 infection during the winter,” Thurmond said. “So much so that many of our counties had absolutely no hospital bed capacity. We have suffered more than 60,000 deaths and more than three and a half million COVID-19 cases. We have been in a difficult position. But lately where we have now gotten a clear picture how to use rapid COVID-19 testing and ventilation, and other resources, will enable us to keep our schools open safely, besides that, we now have a way our schools can be opened and stay open, safe and us are working with 1,000 school districts across the state to make this happen. I think we’re at 9,000 out of 10,000 of our open schools that will be open soon, so obviously things have really turned in a different direction. “

RELATED: “Sign of Hope”: More than 30 San Francisco Public Schools Set to Reopen

Now the vaccination authorization is open from this week for people aged 16 and over. State law requires that public school students receive the vaccines they need. What’s your plan for the COVID-19 vaccine?

“Yeah, it’s exciting that we’re going to see this week that 16 years and older, like you said, can get the vaccine,” Thurmond said. “Look, I am aware of your discussions with the FDA and CDC about the ability to distribute vaccines to young people younger than 12. Some have asked some manufacturers and we are monitoring this and for sure I don’t think it is It is possible to really get into a conversation about the requirement of the vaccine until we have heard from our top health and safety staff whether the vaccine can be safely made available to young people, and we are monitoring and looking forward to it to learn more about what we could do next. “

He mentioned the importance of public information in clearing up uncertainties about the vaccine, which is why webinars helped create confusion.

“I did a webinar last week to focus on how we can get more vaccines in the Latino community, you know, how we get over fears,” Thurmond said. “On Wednesday we’re running a similar webinar on vaccines for the African American community. I think there are people with concerns from all walks of life, and we’re trying to get a message across that vaccines are safe. You know, I’m proud to say it was painless and quick. And I think we’re in a place now where we’re trying to help everyone see the benefits of vaccines. “

We have to ask about this developing situation in Knoxville. Several people shot at a local high school, including a Knoxville police officer. Obviously, that’s way out of your reach. But we saw school shootings here in the state, back in November 2019 in Santa Clarita, just before the pandemic. In this regard, what steps can you take to make hallways safer for the safety of students and parents?

“It was so heartbreaking to learn about the Nashville shooting, and obviously our hearts go out to these families, those who were affected,” Thurmond said. “You know, as you say, we worked with schools before the pandemic to prevent shootouts, and we work with programs like the Mental Health First Aid program, which trains teachers and educators to recognize someone Who it could be I support what President Biden is calling for about how we get these guns off our streets and look to these communities for the memento of the executive branch. “”

The CDC director said just last week that she does not foresee that schools will have to be closed again for security reasons for these new COVID-19 variants. However, new research shows that they may be much more prevalent in schools than initially thought. What is your idea about it?

“The most important thing I can say is that people have to keep wearing face masks and using social distancing,” Thurmond said. “It’s scary to hear that all of these other states, you know, Utah, Texas, have all of these places that said you don’t have to wear a mask.” I think they miss the point. Even with the vaccine, a person can transmit COVID-19 and so we need to think about it. I think the research is mixed, but I trust what Dr. Fauci said. Dr. Fauci has said we are seeing a plateau of falls, but at a much higher rate than predicted, which tells us that there is a chance that it may have to be shut down again. I think we can control our own destiny. “

Social inequalities in education only got worse during this pandemic, and we got clear signs of how. Distance learning, internet access, parents who have multiple jobs, etc. How is your office working to resolve this at the state level?

“You know I am grateful,” said Thurmond. “This was the system that had to go into distance learning overnight, and our system wasn’t designed for it, and that also means we discovered nearly a million children with no access to high-speed internet who got caught in the pandemic, many, too without a computer. Although a lot of our teachers and educators are really ajar, our students and parents have been resilient, even though people have leaned to try to get our distance learning to work, there have been some inevitable bumps and the same learning gaps that we tried to close many of these loopholes exacerbated during the pandemic. “

What about the psychological side of things? It is clear that this is a crisis for so many teenagers and young adults.

“I think the number one thing we should look out for when students are just returning to campus is how well their mental health is working and where they need support.” said Thurmond. “This is so different, they’ve been gone for a year, many of them don’t have direct contact with students and their peers. And so we’re working on a number of mental health programs right now, including medical and other I have a national coalition on mental health Health working with our psychologists and others to support our students. The number one social-emotional well-being of our students is the number one thing to look out for right now, and how we can support our students, and we are doing it. “
