Housing in San Francisco: It’s expensive.

For “fun” this week, we scoured Zillow, looking for San Francisco homes that sold under $1 million in July 2022. There weren’t many candidates. In fact, after eliminating listings with incomplete information, just eight sales made the cut. Without further ado, here’s what sub-seven-figures will get you in the Paris of the West.

461 Allison Street

Neighborhood: Crocker Amazon

Sold for: $880,000

Two beds, one bath and 925 square feet of space for a cool $880,000. The interior sports nice-looking refinished hardwood floors, and there’s lots of natural light throughout, especially in the living room. The kitchen is tiny, even accounting for the square footage, with hard-to-reach cabinets. The garage has a decent amount of storage space.

View the full listing here.

226 Brookdale Ave

Neighborhood: Sunnydale

Sold for: $939,000

This two-beds, one-bath property sold for well over its listing price of $799,000. It’s right next to McClaren Park, on a quiet street corner, according to the listing agent. The home is 1,040 square feet, and offsets a relatively unassuming living room with a genuinely spacious kitchen.

View the full listing here.

60 Castillo St

Neighborhood: Sunnydale

Sold for: $990,000

It’s impossible to miss the exterior paint job on this two-bedroom, one-bath property, which is the featured image of this article. The listing promises a “spacious kitchen with stainless steel appliances,” plus “windows and skylights allow for natural sun light throughout the home.” Unfortunately, there aren’t any images of the interior, so you’ll have to take the agent’s word for it.

View the full listing here.

778 Edinburgh St

Neighborhood: Excelsior

Sold for: $975,000

Another two-bedroom, one-bath home coming in a hair under 1,000 square feet (975, to be exact). It’s located near BART and Muni, has a perfectly nice-looking kitchen, and the newly remodeled bathroom is in great shape. It’s the exterior here that isn’t necessarily a draw: it’s wedged between other houses. Click the link below to see what I mean.

View the full listing here.

818 Huron Ave

Neighborhood: outer mission

Sold for: $981,000

This two-bed, one-bath home has “tons of upside potential,” writes the listing agent. The only problem? A second bathroom and flex space were added without permits. Surely, the new owner is figuring out what to do about this space, which is technically 965 square feet, presumably excluding the yet-to-be-permitted additions.

View the full listing here.

126 Margaret Avenue

Neighborhood: ocean view

Sold for: $895,000

A 1,150-square-feet property with two beds, one bath and a lovely terraced backyard, which seems to currently feature an enormous trampoline. There are cool panoramic views in both the living room and dining room.

View the full listing here.

242 Naples Street

Neighborhood: Excelsior

Sold for: $950,000

The lone three-bedroom, two-baths property on this list, 242 Naples Street is a 1,280-square-foot, single-family home that was originally built in 1948. No interior shots are available, which is a bummer, because the exterior is an intriguing shamrock green.

View the full listing here.

120 Rutland St

Neighborhood: Viz Valley

Sold for: $710,000

At 625 square feet, this one bed, one bath is closer to the size of an apartment. It’s got an unassuming interior, but does come equipped with a comparatively large garage, and actually sold for well above its listing price of $598,000.

Nothing screams summer like a tropical cocktail served in one of San Francisco’s most famous tiki bars. And next month, you can do just that.

On Thursday, the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar announced via Instagram that it would reopen for nightly service every Friday and Saturday on July 9th. Details were thin, but Eater reports that once the restaurant and bar are fully open, diners can expect to be seated on a first come, first served basis. And yes, the thunderstorms are coming again.

The famous Tiki bar, located in the Fairmont San Francisco Hotel, has been temporarily closed since March 2020 when the pandemic shutdowns began and has not yet shared any updates on its social media channels. On Instagram, the Tonga Room wrote that it plans to share more while counting to the bar reopening.

With warmer days and a newly opened San Francisco, the expected return of the Tonga Room is a sign that nature is healing. Just try not to get overwhelmed by excitement and end up in the bar pool.

About 200 employees at a major hospital in San Francisco and the University of California, San Francisco’s health system, most of them fully vaccinated, tested positive for the coronavirus this month and most had the highly contagious Delta variant, according to a hospital official.

Some of the cases were asymptomatic, most included mild to moderate symptoms, and two required hospitalization, officials said. The infections were found to be Delta-related because most of the samples in San Francisco were tested for the variant that is now prevalent in the city.

About 75 to 80 percent of the 50+ infected employees at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital are fully vaccinated, said Dr. Lukejohn Day, the hospital’s chief physician, in an interview on Saturday. The University of California, San Francisco, in a statement released Friday, said 153 of the 183 cases were reported in their hospitals, clinics and on campus was fully vaccinated. [Update: On Aug. 2, the university clarified that 146 of the cases were among staff members in its health system, and that 37 were among U.C.S.F. researchers, other university staff and students. It also reported that, of the two people hospitalized, one was vaccinated and the other was not.]

None of the infected San Francisco General staff members were hospitalized, and most had mild to moderate symptoms, said Dr. Day. The asymptomatic cases were discovered through contact tracing.

With no vaccinations, said Dr. Day, the hospitalization rate would be much worse.

“We’re worried right now that we’re seeing an increase here in San Francisco and the Bay Area,” said Dr. Day. “But what we’re seeing is exactly what the vaccine data showed us: you can still possibly get Covid. But when you get it, it’s not serious at all. “

On July 11, San Francisco ordered that workers in high-risk workplaces, including hospitals, should be vaccinated by September 15. This includes that all employees and trainees must adhere to the new UC system-wide Covid-19 vaccination mandate, with limited exceptions for medical or religious exceptions. ”

Staff at both hospitals continue to wear personal protective equipment, said Dr. Day. But the number of personal infections reported in July is about as high as it was during the height of the winter wave.

“We are nervous that we could possibly exceed it,” said Dr. Day.

San Francisco’s popular fireworks celebration will return to the city’s waterfront this weekend for the first time since 2019.

The show kicks off at 9:30 p.m. this year, and while the fireworks can often be seen from many spots in San Francisco – if the fog isn’t too thick – the city says it’s best along the north waterfront between Aquatic Park and pier can be seen 39.

Anyone planning to attend the show or a large personal holiday gathering is encouraged to get a full vaccination, get a negative COVID-19 test before attending the event, or wear a well-fitting face covering. People who are not yet fully vaccinated should celebrate safely by holding outdoor gatherings and continuing to wear face masks when interacting closely with people outside their household.

“Although today we celebrate our hard work during the pandemic, it is more important than ever for any San Franciscan to get vaccinated so we can continue to attend these grand gatherings,” Mayor London Breed told a press conference Thursday. “If you plan to come to the fireworks this weekend and are not vaccinated, please get tested. We are so close to ending this pandemic! “

With the return of vacation traditions to the city, vacation traffic is also returning. The American Automobile Association expects travel volume to recover almost entirely to pre-pandemic levels, with the second highest Independence Day travel volume ranking second after 2019. AAA predicts 47.7 million Americans will hit the streets and skies, up nearly 40% from last year.

Pier 39 advises visitors to be aware of public transportation when planning trips to see the fireworks, as water access and parking will be very limited.

“We expect larger crowds than usual,” said a representative.

Bob Partrite, COO of Simco Restaurants, who owns the Fog Harbor Fish House at Pier 39, said its restaurants will add staff and stay open a little later on July 4th.

“We are planning a very busy weekend, the whole weekend is busy, hoping people will come from out of town,” he said, adding that the fireworks in the bay will be “one of the best around” .

“I don’t think this year will be as busy as it has been in the past, but I think we’re going to see some strong numbers,” he added.

In order to accommodate the fireworks and the influx of visitors, BART will provide additional trains at the Embarcadero station after the end of regular operations and advise visitors to be at the station by 10:40 p.m. to take a train home.

The regular BART service ends on July 4th at 9:00 p.m. and passengers can only enter the system at Embarcadero Station after the regular BART service ends.

About 30 minutes after the fireworks end, BART will run two special trains from Embarcadero Station to Richmond, Antioch, Berryessa and SFO / Millbrae, all of which will stop. Muni will also offer shuttles along the Embarcadero to the BART, and passengers are encouraged to pre-load their Clipper cards with enough cash to get home after the show to avoid long lines. Masks are still required on the trains, and on Monday, July 5, BART will return to normal weekday operations.

San Francisco’s pyrotechnic show comes as many parched Bay Area counties crack down on home fireworks over the holiday weekend. Drought conditions only worsen in the state, with the Santa Clara Fire Department warning they would adopt a zero-tolerance policy this year. San Mateo County announced in early June that it would increase the fine for illegal fireworks tenfold – from $ 100 to $ 1,000 per incident – with a separate $ 1,000 fine for each party host that sets off fireworks, either legal or illegal.

Instead, party-goers and fireworks fans are encouraged to watch fireworks at authorized professional shows or on television.

Chef Amaryll Schwertner owns the Ferry Building’s Boulettes Larder, which is closed during the fireworks.

“We are not participating,” she said, citing the large crowds and safety concerns in the ferry building.

Also the return to the port of San Francisco is the Bay Ferry Service. From Thursday, the ferry service will increase the number of trips in and out of the city for both visitors and commuters. Bay Ferry will offer a record 136 weekday Transbay departures on five routes, and a new ferry service will offer direct 20-minute trips between the Seaplane Lagoon Ferry Terminal at Alameda Point and downtown San Francisco.

San Francisco Fleet Week will return in October with its Air Show, Parade of Ships, and Humanitarian Village, as well as joint military and civilian disaster planning exercises. The annual event honoring the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces attracts millions of visitors each year and generates over $ 10 million in annual revenue for the city.

Elaine Forbes, executive director of the Port of San Francisco, told the conference that the port is “proud to once again welcome major events on the boardwalk and eager to see residents and visitors return.”

“The waterfront has something for everyone with more exciting options on the horizon,” she added.

Nina Riggio, an intern at the San Francisco Chronicle, contributed to this report.

Closing a bar or restaurant can mark the end of an era, especially for the customers who loved the space and have visited over the years. But the silver lining for some of the companies featured in this month’s round-up of closings is that the end doesn’t necessarily mean the end: some are closing to rethink themselves, with plans to start a new business again open.

In one case this month, the closure means a newer, bigger space – like the one with The Kebabery in Oakland. Here is a curated selection of companies that closed in San Francisco and beyond over the past month.

Below is the list of restaurants, bars, and other food businesses in the Bay Area that were permanently closed in July. For more restaurant and bar closings in the Bay Area in 2021, click here.

Bar in San Francisco Good Trip says au revoir, but the Bon Vivants crew hasn’t completely given up their space yet – another bar concept by the group is already in the works and the space is being renovated for an early opening. Read more at sf.eater.com.

Courtesy Chris Castleman / Fiddleheads Cafe

After months of controversy in Mendocino during the pandemic, Fiddleheads Cafe permanently closed on July 4th. The building that housed the cafe was bought by new owners who refused to renew owner Chris Castleman’s lease from month to month. Read more here.

The kebabery closed its dig in Oakland in July, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone forever. Instead, the group will move to a more suitable room that has a larger kitchen and space for Sesame a Tiny Bakery, its pastry shop. Read more at sfchronicle.com. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst, but operate independently.)

Fort Point Beer’s first brewery company, Mill Valley beer factory, closed after 11 years in business. Founders Justin and Tyler Catalana first opened Mill Valley Beerworks in 2009, before later establishing the Fort Point Beer Company and its four subsequent taprooms. Read more here.

Patty’s Inn lived to see 88 years as a dive bar in San Jose but closed forever to make way for a google campus. This campus will include an office development, residential units, parks and retail space. Read more here.

Posie in Larkspur has put down its ice cream scoop for the time being. After the lease expired, chef and owner Kyle Caporicci decided not to renew and instead move to a new business called Ghost Dog Creamery. Read more here.

Top round roast beef closed its doors in early July after four years in the Mission District. The advantage is that head chef Ricky Lopez will open his own restaurant concept on the premises in August. Read more here.

The San Francisco Giants (59-35) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (59-37) not only fight for the top spot in NL West, but also for the best record in Major League Baseball.

In Tuesday’s matchup, the Dodgers outperformed the Giants 8-6 to even reach the four-game series with one game apiece and reach the division’s leading Giants within one game.

With Julio Urias on the hill against Logan Webb in Wednesday’s matchup, the latest MLB odds suggest Los Angeles, a -163 favorite, has a golden chance to win their second straight game against San Francisco.

However, does that mean bettors should ride the Dodgers at home too?

Fortunately, our MLB PRO report gives a very clear answer.

Giants vs. Dodgers tips

Sharp action

Put simply, the fierce betting we have seen at Giants vs. Dodgers has so far been both significant and one-sided.

Action Labs’ Bet Signals report two unique waves of smart money beating San Francisco with plus money, bringing that price down from +175 to +140 at DraftKings.

Could the Dodgers buyback finally show up between now and the first pitch? Absolutely. But at the time of writing, it is clear that sports betting with Giants money from reputable bettors is tough.

Top experts

And the icing on the cake? One of The Action Network’s MLB betting experts also found that San Francisco is too irresistible to miss at the price, and it matches our top baseball bettors with the smart.

Selection for PRO reports: Giant +140
