100 years ago next month, San Francisco’s Nasser family opened the Castro Theatre: an event that came to define an era and a neighborhood. A century on, it is the longest continually family-owned movie palace in the US To mark the occasion, the Nasser Family in partnership with Another Planet Entertainment is scheduling a week of film screenings featuring iconic movies from each decade of the Castro’s history, June 3–12, some family and children’s programming, and a “Happy Birthday” special event on June 22—the actual date of the Castro’s opening day in 1922—with movies filmed in San Francisco. Concurrent with the centennial celebrations, the LGBTQ Frameline Film Festival will return after a two-year hiatus.

“It continues to be my family’s honor and privilege to own the Castro Theatre,” said Steve Nasser, of Bay Properties, Inc. “After two years of COVID-forced closures, it is such a joy and a pleasure to reopen and to work with the very best, and most sensitive local producers around, Another Planet Entertainment.” Steve and Elaine Nasser Padian are the third generation of this family to lead the company, founded by their grandfather Abraham and his sons having designed and constructed the Castro Theater in 1922.

“The Castro is much more than a theatre,” said Mary Conde, Senior Vice President for Another Planet who oversees the overall Castro Theater Project. “An LGBTQ touchstone, a film-lovers icon, a community landmark and an architectural gem, the Castro is unique. Another Planet is honored to restore, renovate, and revitalize the Castro as a home to everything we’ve come to love about the Castro, and expand its audience.”

Tickets for the special week of screenings are $16 weekdays and $18 weekend with the morning youth programming at $10/adult $6/youth up to age 12 and may be purchased online at https://tinyurl.com/3denv6uv

While there are no vaccine or masking requirements for entry, all attendees are encouraged to have been fully vaccinated and boosted. Masking and adherence to social distancing and proper hygiene protocols are strongly encouraged.

Another Planet Entertainment is partnering with Bay Properties, Inc., owners of the Castro Theater, on an evolution and preservation of San Francisco’s world-renowned entertainment and LGBTQ community landmark. With a long-standing history of working to preserve and improve historic buildings such as the Fox Theater in Oakland, the Greek Theater in Berkeley, and the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, Another Planet seeks to enhance the Castro Theater by implementing significant improvements to the sound, lighting, production, HVAC, ADA access, and the theatre’s trademark marquee, among other facets of the building.

The Nasser brothers got their start with a nickelodeon in 1908 in the Castro neighborhood. The Castro was designed by then-unknown architect Timothy Pflueger, who later designed the Paramount Theatre, the Pacific Cost Stock Exchange, the Pacific Telephone Building, and the Top of the Mark on Nob Hill. Pflueger chose an exterior design reminiscent of a Mexican cathedral. The large windows, the shape of the roof line of the front wall of the building, and the plaster wall decorations all combine to convey a look of grandeur in keeping with the large scale of many theaters built in the 1920s. Sound was installed in 1928. The marquee and the vertical neon sign are additions from the late 1930s, but the glazed tile street foyer, ornate tent-like box office, and the wooden doors are all from the early 1922.

The Castro’s interior is very diverse. One can sense Spanish, Asian, and Italian influences. The auditorium seats over 1400 in a fantasy setting that is both lavish and intimate. Both side walls of the auditorium are covered with classic motif murals that were created in a wet plaster process called scrafitto. This type of wall decoration is rare. On either side of the stage and screen (the small original screen has long ago been replaced with a large screen) are large organ grills. The Art Deco chandelier dates from 1937 when a small electrical fire destroyed the original parchment fixture. It is one of the few remaining movie palaces from the 1920s that has been in continuous operation under same family ownership.

Below is the schedule of Castro Theater 100th Special Film Screenings

Officials from the San Francisco Electoral Department said Tuesday the ministry had certified a petition calling for San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin to be recalled.

The special election to recall Boudin will take place on June 7, 2022 during the nationwide primaries.

About two weeks ago, the Safer SF Without Boudin group announced that they had collected 83,487 signatures from San Francisco voters wanting to recall Boudin – far more than the 30,000 needed for the June vote.

The group claims Boudin failed to prioritize public safety by being too lenient to repeat offenders.

Two former prosecutors for the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, former assistant prosecutor Brooke Jenkins and former prosecutor Don du Bain, have joined the recall.

Safer SF Without Boudin has said the recall effort will be democratic.

However, the Stand with Chesa group, which opposed the recall, has claimed that the recall efforts are being led by Republicans.

Make no mistake: this Republican run-down attempt is fueled by scare tactics and dangerous misinformation. They are driving this recall at a time when we should focus on public health and economic recovery from the devastating effects of the pandemic on our city, “Stand with Chesa said in a statement on the group’s website.

Boudin, a former assistant public defender for the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, took office in 2020 after beating former interim attorney Suzy Loftus in a close race. After his victory, Boudin said his office would focus on bold new initiatives like ending cash bail, reducing pre-trial detention, ending the three-strike rule and establishing a program to restore justice.

Since taking office, however, Boudin has faced severe criticism, including from the San Francisco Police Officers Association.

In January, when 45-year-old Troy McAllister was paroled for armed robbery, he fatally beat two women – Elizabeth Platt, 60, and Hanako Abe, 27 – while they were crossing the street while McAllister was driving a stolen car.

After revealing that McAllister had been paroled and arrested several times since then without charge, Boudin admitted the two women’s deaths were preventable and said his office would make “systematic changes” in how it worked with its partner agencies. including police and probation officers.

 San Francisco Criminal Justice Election

The reopening of the economy in California on June 15 ushered in the moment all restaurants and bars were waiting for: a return of customers and some semblance of normalcy for the businesses that struggled during the pandemic last year. A small handful of businesses didn’t make it all through June, from a well-known Oakland beer garden to a ramen shop that barely lasted a year. Here is a curated selection of companies that closed in San Francisco and beyond this past June.

Below is the list of restaurants, bars, and other food businesses in the Bay Area that are closed this month. For more restaurant and bar closings in the Bay Area in 2021, click here.

Beit Rima quietly closed one of its three locations and closed its Daly City branch last month – the Duboce Triangle and Cole Valley locations will remain open. The news was first noted by Tablehopper, who reported that Nick the Greek was moving in as the new location. Read more about Tablehopper here.

Blue bottle of coffee closed its Uptown Oakland location on Franklin St. in 2001, with four other Blue Bottle Coffee locations still in town. Read more here on Berkeleyside.

Falafelland SOMA has closed after two years in business, and despite an ardent endorsement of food critic Soleil Ho of the San Francisco Chronicle as a favorite. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently.) Read more about the Chronicle here.

Lost and found Oakland has been in hibernation for over a year, but Berkeleyside is the first to report that the beer garden is now marked online as permanently closed. Read more here on Berkeleyside.

The flagship location of Namu stone pot closed on June 6th. The restaurant announced it was closing in an Instagram post that read in part, “Due to this crazy past year and the state of the pandemic and COVID health regulations, we cannot accept an early reopening. ”Read more here.

Wild Rabbit Bakery in Oakland opened in December 2019 but closed after just over a year last June. The up and coming bakery, Bake Sum, is taking over the space at 3249 Grand Ave. Read more here in Berkeleyside.

Ramen restaurant in San Jose zero closes after a little over a year of service; The company announced its closure on Instagram, stating that their chef is moving to Nevada. Read more from the chronicle here.

(We’ll assume nightclubs will be able to reopen without any problems, but that’s still open.) Get ready to wait in food lines with no ocean of space between you and other buyers; large events like Outside Lands can now be held mask-free if they happen later this year.

Business owners across the city have waited patiently to find out if San Francisco mask rules and capacity limits would actually be lifted when they moved on on the 15th. And now we know.

Late on Tuesday, the Mayor of London Breed and Acting Health Officer Dr. Susan Philip announced during a webinar that starting June 15, the city will conform to state guidelines and lift capacity limits in bars, restaurants, gyms and other businesses. There have been several weeks of doubt as to whether SF would be stricter than the state as a whole, but no.

That probably also means that nightclubs will become nightclubs again and that we no longer have to perform the socially distant dance in the supermarket.

Except for very large events – defined as over 5,000 people indoors or over 10,000 people outdoors – no more masks will be needed anywhere unless a single company continues to need them.

However, you still need a mask on Muni trains and buses – these are the recommendations of the CDC, masks for local public transport until at least September. And, as we learned Wednesday morning, the Cal / OSHA board of directors is meeting to discuss a possible reversal of its guidelines on masks in workplaces where one or more employees are not vaccinated.

As reported by Eater, Breed urged the San Franciscans to be kind and patient with one another as we navigate this late transition to the pandemic – for you know there will be some people who will wear these masks indoors and outdoors all summer.

“We’re finally moving back to a certain level of normalcy,” Breed allegedly said. “Let me say that. It’s going to be a big change. The city comes to life, but not everyone moves at the same pace … so let’s remember that the last year has been tough for everyone. So have a little patience and a little grace. If you see someone wearing a mask and the rules say they don’t need to, just leave them alone. It is nobody’s business if they want to wear their mask. Maybe they feel so good. “

As SFist discussed yesterday, San Francisco is better off than most cities, even within California, when it comes to vaccination rates, and we could even achieve herd immunity in about three weeks. However, as Dr. UCSF’s Monica Gandhi says its whether or not infection rates will rise at all once all restrictions are lifted and people mingle again in public. Only the unvaccinated are really at risk, but in theory, when the city reaches levels that can be described as herd immunity, infected and unvaccinated people arriving from outside the city should not be able to trigger outbreaks, and the rate of new infections every day increases in SF should stay as low as it is now.

In the short term, this means that things like Stern Grove and Pride parties, which used to act cautiously and cap the number of tickets sold, can open the floodgates knowing the city won’t hold them back from next week.

But are everyone ready to be on a crowded dance floor again?
